Seaford College SPORT
Wednesday, 28th January, 2026

Welcome from the Director of Sport
What a superb way to conclude last week with the Seaford Southern 10s victory on Sunday. It was wonderful to see so many supporters present, creating an atmosphere that truly reflected what Seaford sport is about. Several special memories were made for players, families and staff alike. It was particularly meaningful to note that a number of boys in that team have been part of our community since Year 3. Moments such as these reinforce the value of long-term development and, we hope, inspire many more Seaford pupils to imagine themselves on a similar journey in the years ahead.

That journey, our Seaford development pathway, remains central to our approach. We are proud of its breadth and flexibility, both of which allow us to support pupils at very different stages of their sporting lives. Our ambition is to see increasing numbers of Seaford students continue along this pathway for many years, finding enjoyment, challenge and fulfilment through sport, whatever their ultimate destination.
It was also a pleasure to celebrate sport more formally at the Sports Dinner, which proved to be a great success. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the evening and helped create such a positive celebration of effort, commitment and shared values across the school.
Looking ahead, this is a blockbuster week, particularly in the Prep School. Alongside a full programme of fixtures, we have IAPS and SISNA tournaments, offering excellent opportunities for students to experience competitive sport in varied and stimulating environments.
This week also sees our 13+ Sports Scholarship Assessment Day. As referenced in the recent letter updating families on all things sport, this area of Seaford Sport is currently under review. It is important to acknowledge that the sports scholarship programme has, and will likely continue to, generate healthy debate. Such discussion is both understandable and constructive, reflecting the care our community has for our children. Work is ongoing to clarify how the programme will operate in the near future, with consistency and transparency firmly in mind.
We are fortunate to attract many children who simply love being active in sport. At the same time, we recognise that young people develop at different rates; physically, emotionally and technically. Our current review is informed by contemporary research, including ideas explored by Professor Arne Güllich. A key message is that early performance could be a poor predictor of long-term success; instead, children benefit most from environments that prioritise broad skill development, enjoyment and adaptability. The research also reinforces the value of allowing time for growth, avoiding early specialisation and recognising that late developers often thrive when given appropriate support.
Such thinking aligns closely with the Seaford ethos. Drawing on the experience and insight of our excellent Sports and PE staff, we are refining our scholarship processes and wider provision to better reflect these principles. With supporting passion for sport, building resilience and promoting lifelong engagement rather than short-term outcomes.
Rather than emulating others, we aim to innovate thoughtfully. We remain proud of our approach while acknowledging that the changing landscape of youth sport continues to influence development stages. Ultimately, our goal is to provide research-informed pathways, rooted in our values, that enable every child to enjoy sport, grow in confidence, and reach their potential in the right time for them.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support.

This week, we will be supported by the Seaford College Physio Team, Sport Staff and our Medical Centre.
Additional Medical Support
To continue to ensure that we are providing proactive, gold-standard care to our students, the school is in partnership with Return2Play, the UK’s leading sports medicine partners for schools. Feedback from other schools and parents utilising their expertise is strong, while our own experience has been overwhelmingly positive thus far.
If you have any queries regarding your account, then please get in touch with Return2Play directly via hello@return2play.org.uk and they will be happy to help. The helpdesk runs 7 days a week.

Wet Weather and Cancellations
As a team, we will always do everything within our control to ensure fixtures and recreational activities go ahead as scheduled. Any changes to the schedule will be communicated via the respective sports coaches and clarion call.
Dogs on the School Site
We are a dog-friendly site; however, can I remind all parents that dogs should always be on a lead while onsite, and should not be on the field of play. If challenged by a member of staff, please be polite, respect the campus rules and remember that the safety of our students is paramount.
Parents and Supporters – Code of Conduct
For our core values (RESPECT, TEAMWORK, COURAGE, TRUST) to be upheld and our sports programme to be truly successful, it takes the cooperation of all involved – players, coaches, officials, staff, spectators and parents. The College and the staff have spent some time and effort reinforcing these sporting values within Seaford, and we believe it is essential that we include parents and friends of the College in this process.
One of the key questions we ask all supporters to consider is:
‘How does our touchline behaviour shape character and enhance the enjoyment for all the players during the game?’
Please let the coaches coach so that you can enjoy the parental match day experience. As a team and a college, we value performance and desired learning behaviours over the scoreboard – win, lose or draw, it is about the experience and the students making memories with their friends. Thank you for your support with this! Successful College sport is built upon strong partnerships between the students, parents and the College.
We look forward to seeing you all on the sidelines, both home and away, and thank you for your continued support of the Seaford Sport programme.
