Welcome from the Director of Sport
This week’s programme notes feel best framed around the publicity and excitement that tournament sport brings, both within school and beyond it. There is something about tournaments that heightens everything: the build-up, the sense of occasion, the noise on the sidelines and the knowledge that every match carries a little more weight. They bring drama, competition, pride and spectacle, especially for players and for those watching live. Tournament events remind us why sport captures attention in a way few other things can: their unpredictable nature.

This was very much evident watching the recent AFCON football competition unfold. At its best, it showcased exactly what tournament sport can offer: passion, national pride, thrilling moments and unforgettable drama. It was a reminder of how sport can unite people and create extraordinary occasions and memories. Unfortunately, it also highlighted the other side, some questionable ethics, moments of petulance and behaviour that meant the final was remembered for reasons that had little to do with the football itself. As ever, sport at the very top does, and always will, filter down to junior and grassroots levels, whether we like it or not.
This prompted some fascinating conversations with colleagues during the week, and it aligns neatly with ideas explored in Range by David Epstein and in the work of Ian Yates. It raises a question that I am fairly sure will divide opinion: are we encouraging young people to copy what elite adult performers are doing now, rather than what those performers were doing when they were young? Much of the research points towards the value of breadth, encouraging sampling a range of activities and sports, playing freely, developing adaptability and enjoying competition without being overly constrained too early. It is certainly one for the next touchline chat
Closer to home, this week we have had lots of hockey on the menu for our Prep students, with some brilliant opportunities for them to compete, play and enjoy representing their teams. The pitches have been busy, the energy high and the sense of momentum very real within all things Seaford Sport, as the recent letter with our updates outlines. Alongside the fixtures, we are also looking ahead to a weekend that promises to be a real highlight for our sporting community. I am sure many of you will be attending two of our marquee events: the Sports Dinner on Friday evening, a chance to celebrate effort, commitment and shared stories, with the weekend culminating in the Southern Seaford Rugby 10s on Sunday, which never fails to deliver high-quality school rugby, intensity and the occasional animated highlight. Do not worry – no players will be leaving the pitch before the final whistle, and all pitch-side towels will be permitted!
As we head into the weekend, I hope these events both on and off the field provide moments that spark conversation and connection. Whether you are watching from the sidelines, on the live stream, celebrating at the dinner or simply enjoying the buzz that tournament sport brings to the school, thank you for being such an important part of our sporting community. I look forward to seeing many of you over the coming days.
Yours in sport,
Mr Christian Head Director of Sport

Medical Provision
This week, we will be supported by the Seaford College Physio Team, Sport Staff and our Medical Centre.
Additional Medical Support
To continue to ensure that we are providing proactive, gold-standard care to our students, the school is in partnership with Return2Play, the UK’s leading sports medicine partners for schools. Feedback from other schools and parents utilising their expertise is strong, while our own experience has been overwhelmingly positive thus far.
If you have any queries regarding your account, then please get in touch with Return2Play directly via hello@return2play.org.uk and they will be happy to help. The helpdesk runs 7 days a week.

Wet Weather and Cancellations
As a team, we will always do everything within our control to ensure fixtures and recreational activities go ahead as scheduled. Any changes to the schedule will be communicated via the respective sports coaches and clarion call.
Dogs on the School Site
We are a dog-friendly site; however, can I remind all parents that dogs should always be on a lead while onsite, and should not be on the field of play. If challenged by a member of staff, please be polite, respect the campus rules and remember that the safety of our students is paramount.
Parents and Supporters – Code of Conduct
For our core values (RESPECT, TEAMWORK, COURAGE, TRUST) to be upheld and our sports programme to be truly successful, it takes the cooperation of all involved – players, coaches, officials, staff, spectators and parents. The College and the staff have spent some time and effort reinforcing these sporting values within Seaford, and we believe it is essential that we include parents and friends of the College in this process.
One of the key questions we ask all supporters to consider is:
‘How does our touchline behaviour shape character and enhance the enjoyment for all the players during the game?’
Please let the coaches coach so that you can enjoy the parental match day experience. As a team and a college, we value performance and desired learning behaviours over the scoreboard – win, lose or draw, it is about the experience and the students making memories with their friends. Thank you for your support with this! Successful College sport is built upon strong partnerships between the students, parents and the College.
We look forward to seeing you all on the sidelines, both home and away, and thank you for your continued support of the Seaford Sport programme.
