Welcome from the Director of Sport

The Summer Term has arrived (finally, with some sunshine on cue), and with it comes one of the most exciting and energetic periods in our sporting calendar. The fields are firming up; whites are being dusted off, and the unmistakable sound of leather on willow signals that the summer season is well and truly underway.

It has been fantastic to see such strong engagement in our pre-season cricket sessions. The enthusiasm, commitment and occasionally creative interpretations of batting technique have been brilliant. This early effort always pays dividends as the term progresses, and many students are already setting themselves up for a successful season.

Alongside cricket, we are looking forward to a busy programme of tennis, golf and athletics fixtures throughout the term. There will be opportunities for all students to represent the school, develop their skills and, most importantly, enjoy their sport. All roads, of course, lead to our much-anticipated Seaford Sports Day, which promises to be a fantastic celebration of participation, teamwork and a healthy dose of competitive “Ad Alta” spirit.

Over the holidays, it has been wonderful to hear of so many individual and team successes. From impressive performances in show jumping and polo, to students achieving international honours in gymnastics, and not forgetting the triumphs and tales (and sore legs!) from the ski trip, these achievements highlight the remarkable breadth of our sports programme. More importantly, they reflect the dedication and enthusiasm of our students across a wide range of disciplines.

As we begin the term, there will quite simply be a lot going on. Teams will be out in force, fixtures will come thick and fast, and students will be experiencing both familiar and new sports. With this in mind, a gentle note to parents, carers and guardians: at Prep School level, these are crucial developmental years. Research consistently shows that children thrive in sport when the focus is on enjoyment, effort and gradual improvement rather than early perfection. Trying a new sport can feel daunting and progress is rarely linear (despite what your child may tell you after one good session!) Patience, encouragement and sideline support (preferably without technical coaching mid-match) make a significant difference to long-term confidence and success. In short: enthusiasm is invaluable and perspective even more so. However, be assured we will be giving your children as much opportunity to play as much as possible during this term!

We are also delighted to welcome a sports nutritionist to school on Monday, who will be running workshops with our Year 7 and Year 8 students. This is a fantastic opportunity for them to learn about fuelling their bodies effectively, an area that becomes increasingly important as their activity levels rise. Following these sessions, we will also be hosting a parent webinar to share key insights and practical advice, ensuring that families feel equally well-equipped to support healthy habits at home.

All in all, it promises to be a vibrant, action-packed term. Thank you, as always, for your continued support. We look forward to seeing many of you on the sidelines sun hats and chairs at the ready, we hope.

Let the summer sport begin.

Additional Medical Support

To continue to ensure that we are providing proactive, gold-standard care to our students, the school is in partnership with Return2Play, the UK’s leading sports medicine partners for schools. Feedback from other schools and parents utilising their expertise is strong, while our own experience has been overwhelmingly positive thus far. If you have any queries regarding your account, then please get in touch with Return2Play directly via hello@return2play.org.uk and they will be happy to help. The helpdesk runs 7 days a week.

Wet Weather and Cancellations

As a team, we will always do everything within our control to ensure fixtures and recreational activities go ahead as scheduled. Any changes to the schedule will be communicated via the respective sports coaches and clarion call.

Dogs on the School Site

We are a dog-friendly site; however, can I remind all parents that dogs should always be on a lead while onsite, and should not be on the field of play. If challenged by a member of staff, please be polite, respect the campus rules and remember that the safety of our students is paramount.

Parents and Supporters – Code of Conduct

For our core values (RESPECT, TEAMWORK, COURAGE, TRUST) to be upheld and our sports programme to be truly successful, it takes the cooperation of all involved – players, coaches, officials, staff, spectators and parents. The College and the staff have spent some time and effort reinforcing these sporting values within Seaford, and we believe it is essential that we include parents and friends of the College in this process.

One of the key questions we ask all supporters to consider is:

‘How does our touchline behaviour shape character and enhance the enjoyment for all the players during the game?’

Please let the coaches coach so that you can enjoy the parental match day experience. As a team and a college, we value performance and desired learning behaviours over the scoreboard – win, lose or draw, it is about the experience and the students making memories with their friends. Thank you for your support with this! Successful College sport is built upon strong partnerships between the students, parents and the College.

We look forward to seeing you all on the sidelines, both home and away, and thank you for your continued support of the Seaford Sport programme.
