Welcome from the Director of Sport

Another week down and there is a real sense that summer sport is back, with more smiles, more sport and more sun cream! Before anything else, I would like to thank parents and students for their understanding regarding the recent fixture cancellations and disruptions. These decisions are never taken lightly and are always a last resort. Weather conditions, opposition availability, ground safety and other variables can sometimes conspire against even the best-laid plans, despite significant communication and contingency planning behind the scenes. The good news is that when we have been able to get on the field, our students have continued to represent Seaford brilliantly.

As we approach the final weeks of term, there is still plenty to look forward to. This weekend sees a number of internal sporting events on Saturday, providing an inclusive and enjoyable way for students to finish the academic year together. Alongside this, our final athletics fixtures are upon us, while the Girls’ and Boys’ Cricket Festivals quite literally head off into the sunset on Sunday afternoon as we conclude another busy summer of competition.

We still have a backlog of cricket fixtures to complete where possible, so please keep an eye on direct communications and SOCS updates. Sports Day information will be shared early next week in preparation for the Prep School event on Friday and the Senior School Sports Day on Saturday following Speech Day. For many of our Year 13 students, this will be the final opportunity to represent Seaford College as a student, I am sure this will be a memorable moment for them.

Away from the fixtures, we continue to review and develop our sports programme. One of the most interesting pieces I have read recently explored why young people stop participating in sport. The number one reason is remarkably simple: it stops being fun. This has prompted some excellent discussions within the department about how we future-proof our provision, balancing meaningful competition with enjoyment, while encouraging students to develop habits that will benefit them long after they leave Seaford.

The timing of these conversations is particularly interesting given the Government’s recent announcement regarding restrictions on social media for under-16s. Whether you agree with every aspect of the proposal or not, it raises an important question: what will young people choose to do with that time?

At Seaford, we are unapologetically passionate about the answer. We believe that being active with friends, representing a team, learning new skills, embracing challenge, winning graciously and losing resiliently are experiences worth protecting. If spending time outdoors and participating in sport becomes increasingly valued again, we will be first to support it, because we see the positive impact it has on our students every day.

As our partnership continues with you as parents, I hope you can see the direction of travel. We are ambitious for what sport at Seaford can be but equally committed to getting the balance right. Our aim remains simple: to make the very best use of our facilities, staff and opportunities so that as many students as possible can benefit from being active, involved and inspired through Seaford Sport.

One final sporting thought before I sign off. Like many of you, I enjoyed watching England this week. Beyond the result, what stood out was the belief, bravery and clear “go for it” mentality shown in both the performance and the post-match interviews. As educators and coaches, that is something we can all get behind. We want young people to back themselves, embrace challenges and enjoy the opportunity to perform rather than fear it.

As for whether it’s coming home? Ask me again in a few weeks’ time...

Additional Medical Support

To continue to ensure that we are providing proactive, gold-standard care to our students, the school is in partnership with Return2Play, the UK’s leading sports medicine partners for schools. Feedback from other schools and parents utilising their expertise is strong, while our own experience has been overwhelmingly positive thus far.

If you have any queries regarding your account, then please get in touch with Return2Play directly via hello@return2play.org.uk and they will be happy to help. The helpdesk runs 7 days a week.

Wet Weather and Cancellations

As a team, we will always do everything within our control to ensure fixtures and recreational activities go ahead as scheduled. Any changes to the schedule will be communicated via the respective sports coaches and clarion call.

Dogs on the School Site

We are a dog-friendly site; however, can I remind all parents that dogs should always be on a lead while onsite, and should not be on the field of play. If challenged by a member of staff, please be polite, respect the campus rules and remember that the safety of our students is paramount.

Parents and Supporters – Code of Conduct

For our core values (RESPECT, TEAMWORK, COURAGE, TRUST) to be upheld and our sports programme to be truly successful, it takes the cooperation of all involved – players, coaches, officials, staff, spectators and parents. The College and the staff have spent some time and effort reinforcing these sporting values within Seaford, and we believe it is essential that we include parents and friends of the College in this process.

One of the key questions we ask all supporters to consider is:

‘How does our touchline behaviour shape character and enhance the enjoyment for all the players during the game?’

Please let the coaches coach so that you can enjoy the parental match day experience. As a team and a college, we value performance and desired learning behaviours over the scoreboard – win, lose or draw, it is about the experience and the students making memories with their friends. Thank you for your support with this! Successful College sport is built upon strong partnerships between the students, parents and the College.

We look forward to seeing you all on the sidelines, both home and away, and thank you for your continued support of the Seaford Sport programme.
