Welcome from the Director of Sport

The past week has once again highlighted what makes sport at Seaford College such a powerful and meaningful part of school life. Yes, there has been plenty of highquality performance on display, a lot of these shared on our socials by our incredible Marketing Team; however, it is the depth of experience, connection and contribution that continues to define our sporting ethos.

A particularly pleasing development has been the growth of our in-house mentoring opportunities, where older students are actively supporting younger students as sport mentors. These relationships are invaluable. For our junior student athletes, having senior role models guiding them through early sporting pathways brings reassurance, inspiration and much-needed perspective. For our older students, mentoring reinforces responsibility, empathy and leadership. Crucially, it is a clear example of giving back to the Seaford community, which is an expectation we place great value on as members of the student body progress through the College.

Community has also been strongly evident in our recent SSSL swimming, which provided a wonderful vertical social experience across Prep, Senior, and Sixth Form swimmers. Events like this remind us that sport has the rare ability to dissolve age boundaries, creating shared purpose and collective purpose We were up against some excellent school swimmers; however, everyone gave their all and, while I am biased, we appeared a visible ‘team’ throughout. When these moments are combined with our residential opportunities, they form a rich tapestry of experiences that our young people will carry with them.

Our hockey programme continues to thrive, despite some logistical headaches as we try to get all the cup matches played in time! The 1st XI Girl’s Hockey Finals Day in Nottingham will be a fitting reward for a season defined by commitment and togetherness, while anticipation builds for the upcoming Amsterdam hockey tour for our senior students. Tours such as these remain among the most formative sporting experiences we offer; challenging, exciting, occasionally exhausting but always memorable.

Research into youth sport increasingly reinforces what we believe at Seaford: sport remains one of the last meaningful social institutions available to young people. It is a space where individuals learn how to belong, how to contribute and how to place collective success (whatever this looks like) alongside personal ambition. Our mentoring programmes, crossage competitions and team environments all serve this purpose. They teach students that performance is important, but character is essential.

This sentiment is neatly captured by a phrase familiar to the few Leeds United supporters among us. Introduced by former manager Marcelo Bielsa, “side before self” feels particularly fitting for our students. It speaks to teamwork, selflessness and responsibility; values that resonate far beyond the pitch and can be lived daily by every student at Seaford, regardless of sport or standard.

Looking ahead, we have another busy weekend with all three seasonal sports in operation. A reminder, as always, to check SOCS as our live hub for fixtures, timings and venues. We encourage our students to take ownership of this because staying organised is also a valuable life skill.

To conclude, whether mentoring a younger student, racing alongside peers and supporting different year groups, competing in a final, or preparing for an overseas tour, our students are building memories that will last a lifetime. If they continue to build the importance of understanding the value of contribution, community and putting the side before self, then we can be quietly confident that Seaford Sport is doing exactly what it should.

Additional Medical Support

To continue to ensure that we are providing proactive, gold-standard care to our students, the school is in partnership with Return2Play, the UK’s leading sports medicine partners for schools. Feedback from other schools and parents utilising their expertise is strong, while our own experience has been overwhelmingly positive thus far.

If you have any queries regarding your account, then please get in touch with Return2Play directly via hello@return2play.org.uk and they will be happy to help. The helpdesk runs 7 days a week.

Wet Weather and Cancellations

As a team, we will always do everything within our control to ensure fixtures and recreational activities go ahead as scheduled. Any changes to the schedule will be communicated via the respective sports coaches and clarion call.

Dogs on the School Site

We are a dog-friendly site; however, can I remind all parents that dogs should always be on a lead while onsite, and should not be on the field of play. If challenged by a member of staff, please be polite, respect the campus rules and remember that the safety of our students is paramount.

Parents and Supporters – Code of Conduct

For our core values (RESPECT, TEAMWORK, COURAGE, TRUST) to be upheld and our sports programme to be truly successful, it takes the cooperation of all involved – players, coaches, officials, staff, spectators and parents. The College and the staff have spent some time and effort reinforcing these sporting values within Seaford, and we believe it is essential that we include parents and friends of the College in this process.

One of the key questions we ask all supporters to consider is:

‘How does our touchline behaviour shape character and enhance the enjoyment for all the players during the game?’

Please let the coaches coach so that you can enjoy the parental match day experience. As a team and a college, we value performance and desired learning behaviours over the scoreboard – win, lose or draw, it is about the experience and the students making memories with their friends. Thank you for your support with this! Successful College sport is built upon strong partnerships between the students, parents and the College.

We look forward to seeing you all on the sidelines, both home and away, and thank you for your continued support of the Seaford Sport programme.
