“Winter is a time to reflect on the warmth of God’s love, the hope of Christ’s birth, and the promise of new life in Him.” - Unknown
The Bible tells us, “God is love.“ (1 John 4:8).
Love is not an action or a feeling; it‘s a Divine Person, God Himself as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This season we celebrate the fact that “Love“ came down.
The incarnation, Jesus coming to this speck in the galaxy called “Earth“ as a baby boy, is the ultimate expression of love coming down. When I was a kid, I moved a magnifying glass outside on sunny days so that the sun‘s light was concentrated into a small radiant beam that could light things on fire.
The radiant beam of God‘s love was concentrated in the person and life of Jesus, the Light of the World (John 8:12). Through Jesus‘ life, we see what love does: love gives, love serves, love sacrifices. Jesus Christ, who is Love, came to die on the cross for us. God the Father expressed His love for us by giving His Son for this purpose. Then, the Holy Spirit poured this love into our hearts (Romans 5:5).
I‘ve started to pray the prayer recorded by the Apostle Paul in Ephesians 3:1419. It‘s a prayer to comprehend the love of God, to know a love that surpasses knowledge: “Each day, let me know your love just a few inches more in breadth, length, height, and depth.” The concentrated beam of that love is shown to us by Jesus‘ incarnation.
God did this because He loves you more than you can comprehend this side of eternity. I pray God‘s love will quiet, comfort, cast out all fear, and encourage your heart this coming year. You are loved!

I love the scene in The Sound of Music when Julie Andrews seeks to comfort the children in her care during a thunderstorm by singing the beloved song “My Favorite Things.” Inspired by this song, I keep an ongoing list of my own Favorite Things. Imagine my delight a year ago when my husband and I attended an interest meeting about a new ministry LC3 would be launching and realized this ministry included many top items from my Favorite Things List:
Sharing Jesus with others through words and actions
Seeing others come to Jesus and grow in their faith
• Hearing friends share their testimony of God’s goodness
• Learning more about God, the Bible, and my faith Meeting new people and making new friends
Sitting around a table with good food and new friends
• Engaging in meaningful conversation with laughter and tears
• Grappling with tough questions in a safe space with no judgment
Serving with my husband, Sam, in the same ministry (it’s great for the marriage!)
It was almost too good to be true. I’d never heard of Alpha, but that day I did hear the testimony of people
who’d been a part of it. After serving in our first Alpha class, I know Alpha (and GOD!) is that good and that true! Alpha and the people within are officially a Favorite Thing and it’s one I want to share with everyone I meet.
I refocus my fear by remembering the goodness of things in life. God used the opportunity of serving with our Alpha Team to take away my fear of feeling inept at sharing the Gospel and answering tough questions by refocusing my heart on the goodness of Him and the beautiful things He has provided for us. In fact, “His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through the full knowledge of the one who called us by His own glory and excellence.” (2 Peter 1:3)
And, as Julie Andrews sings, “and then I don’t feel so bad.” But, actually, I feel really great. I’d love for you to experience this, too. Please talk with me, or come to Alpha, or serve with Alpha. I know it will become a Favorite Thing that counts for Eternity.

A LIFE REBORN
Cynical. That was me. I came to re|engage beaten and run over by Christians and churches and I was confident there was NOTHING a church support group full of holy rollers could offer. I came into the group thinking I’d sit for an hour and leave, offering my husband the same, “I told you so,” I’d said for every church event we’d ever done together. I thought my marriage was fine, that my spouse was overreacting to our arguments, and I didn’t even know why I was in a marriage class. I remember clearly: I came into the first meeting, I listened, heard the singing and testimony that was offered, and then we were asked to come up front if we had never been before. I went up front and told the room I was not religious, I was a pagan witch, and I was not sure this was the place for me.
Let me pause for a moment here and explain my situation. I grew up in a home void of God and God’s love until I sought it out myself as a young child. I rode buses to church when I could, and in junior high I went to church with my best friend. At age 17 I married into a very Christ-centered family (or so I thought). As a teenager, I was highly involved as a student leader and very rooted in my church - until I wasn’t. There were several pivotal times in my life when I’d counted on “God,” but I had put my faith in people, and people let you down. Looking back, I let myself and God down.
When I told the re|engage group about my current pagan affiliations, I expected a reply equally cynical in nature, maybe a, “You’re one of those,” or, “We don’t have a place for you here.” But that was NOT what I got. I was simply told, “OK,” and met with a blank stare for a second that communicated, “Is that all?” You see, God was already working on me and the leader knew she didn’t have to say more.
We attended re|engage for three weeks before committing to a closed group. The first week in our closed group was as expected: it was a chapter on experiencing God’s love. I’m quite sure I was feeling relaxed because that week wasn’t as rough as I anticipated. The group we were placed in was a great fit from the first day and relationships were beginning to form.
The topic of the second week was “Brokenness” and I hit the wall. I was sitting in my car reading the homework and I got MAD; it was clear to me that the book was from a cult, and I was being attacked. The book used terms at the core of my issues, and I felt confronted. I read everything with a negative eye and mindset. I even called my group leader and insisted the verbiage was awful. I was asked to read it again and we sat and talked for a long time. It was the beginning of healing my hurt and pain. We had 12 weeks to go and let me tell you - they were AMAZING!
By week 3, on the topic of Grace, my walls came crashing down. I don’t mean I was able to stand being in the group, I mean, I sold my business. I’d been selling pagan gifts online for years and within two weeks I closed my business. My husband and I began reading the Bible together, I recommitted my life and my soul to the Lord, and my ENTIRE OUTLOOK ON LIFE completely turned around.
My husband John and I completed the 14 weeks of a closed re|engage group. Months later, we are closer than ever. I know most people who enter this class anticipate revamping a marriage but this class transformed our entire life. Before this class, I couldn’t pray without rolling my eyes or cursing, and now, let me just tell you about my Jesus! My home is more peaceful, I pray, I enjoy God’s presence in my life all over again and I feel like I’m literally HELD again by a loving parent as I go through life.
I tell people that before I came to re|engage life was fine, but it was as if I was living in a Petrie dish. Choosing to live in a small world meant I was missing the whole world. I can step out now and experience everything, not just a small portion. I limited the amount of myself I’d opened to my husband and my children to prevent anyone from hurting me. But I’m free now. I know that life will never be “perfect” but I’m not alone. My marriage isn’t only for myself and my spouse. My children don’t have only my husband and me looking after them. We have a home that welcomes God’s presence. Re|engage gave me EVERYTHING and we are VERY much looking forward to another session very soon! Forever grateful to re|engage, coaches and LC3 for the opportunity to have taken these classes.

The Niger Focus Team originally began as the Tamajaq Task Force in 2008 following a prayer and vision trip to Niger. We officially adopted the unreached semi-nomadic Tamajaq people; we pray for them and encourage the spread of the gospel through the support of long-term, cross-cultural global workers. We began praying monthly for the Lord to touch their lives with His Word. Since that time the Tamajaq New Testament has been published and work continues to complete the Old Testament.
Broadening our vision recently, we now include support for the Fulani, another semi-nomadic people group who live across Africa from the Atlantic Ocean to Ethiopia and Sudan. Fruit from the investment of decades by our global workers is being seen as God calls Nigerien Fulani to reach their fellow Sudanese Fulani, who are living and dying without ever hearing of the love of Jesus. We are seeing the local people sensing the call of God to take the Gospel across borders where only they can go. This is exciting!
Our annual Change Drive provides funds for distributing MP3 players with the Tamajaq Bible recording and many other gospel films/programs; Bible education for both Tamajaq and Fulani; Radio broadcast; SD cards for cell phones; and other Scripture proclamation avenues. In 2024 we distributed $8,000 for the above needs! Thank you, LC3!!
Join us monthly for Niger Prayer for these unreached peoples. We meet at 9am on Sunday mornings, date TBA. We also welcome anyone to join our monthly Niger Focus Team meetings. If you are interested, contact Pastor Jim Kennington at Jim.Kennington@LC3.com to get on the email list.
Currently, due to the unstable government from the coup in Niger, we are not planning any trips to that country at this time.
The Inspiring Journey of Khadija and Ayesha.
In the spring of 2024, two sisters Khadija (11) and Ayesha (9) arrived in America for the very first time with their younger brother and pregnant mama. Having escaped Afghanistan as Christians they were eager to begin anew. After settling here in Washington they began regularly attending Lake City Community Church. LC3, having welcomed and walked alongside them in their first several months here, has become an anchor point for their growth in the Lord. Although traversing the world and establishing oneself in a new country, new culture, and new language is extremely difficult; they are THRIVING!
Thanks to the Table of Nations and some very faithful Lake City women— Abby, Elizabeth, Savanna and others—the girls have been able to experience the richness of the body of Christ and His truth. Almost every
weekend since living in Lakewood, Khadija and Ayesha have attended LC3 Kids church with friends. Over the summer they participated in two VBS camps including LC3’s Summer Escape, and in the fall they jumped at the opportunity to join Awana and its serve team. Abby, who works with the girls weekly, has said of them, “They’ve grown leaps and bounds in their reading of God’s Word, memorization of Bible verses; and looking up scripture.”
In school, they are regularly reaching and attaining new milestones as well. By October, Ayesha had learned the entire English alphabet and was writing in full sentences! She is continuing to progress in reading and writing, and her teacher delights in her. In the meantime, Khadija recently broke a school record in math, having made the most progress over a two-week period in school history. Both girls have received awards and kudos at school assemblies for these accomplishments.

Support for young women experiencing an unplanned pregnancy (childcare registration available).
As I worship with LC3 each month, I am constantly reminded of God’s grace, mercy, love, and hope in my life through the years. Raised in a Christian home with supportive parents, I was active in ministries throughout high school and well-known within my church and school communities.
At 19, I found myself unmarried, pregnant, and feeling deep shame and disappointment. My childhood church responded harshly, but our family and friends were supportive. I struggled with guilt and believed I could not forgive myself. Yet, God restored me years later. A message from Jeremiah about the Potter and clay renewed my spirit, reminding me that no sin is too great for God to transform. Only He can shape our brokenness into beauty for His glory. Since then, I have shared my testimony of becoming a young mom and how God’s grace has touched my husband and me.
Now, I am excited to serve in Embrace Grace, a new ministry at LC3 that offers emotional, practical, and spiritual support to single, young, pregnant women facing unplanned pregnancies. The ministry’s mission is to empower the church to be a safe, nonjudgmental place for these women to turn to. Over the course of 12 weeks, the program teaches about God’s love and grace, culminating in a baby shower to celebrate the new moms.
Within our church, we have the opportunity to demonstrate love and support during these young women’s most vulnerable moments. Please pray for this ministry. If you would like to get involved or know someone who could benefit from Embrace Grace, reach out to me or visit our church’s website.
Contact IgniteHope@LC3.com to receive help or volunteer.
The Pregnancy Support focus within LC3’s Ignite Hope ministry supports unexpectedly pregnant women and couples who face the pressure to abort. They provide hope, accurate information, judgment-free compassion, and connection to healing resources for women and men who have been touched by reproductive loss in the past.
What we do:
• Rescue: the lives of unborn children; women from emotional damage
• Support: material and friendship
• Disciple & Mentor: connect women with Bible studies and support groups
At LC3 we believe God has called the local church to come alongside foster families by providing support to them as they open their hearts and homes to children in need. Statistics show that when a foster family has support, they are more likely to continue fostering children in need of families. What we do:
A group of 4-8 people, on a rotating schedule, give tangible support to foster families through providing meals, helping with tutoring, childcare, transportation, laundry, yard work, etc.
Our mission is to empower those with mental health challenges to access strong support systems and care. We also want to educate those affected by these challenges in our church and the community to remove the stigma associated with mental health.
What we do:
• Approach mental health recovery from a hope and faith-filled perspective
• Start a weekly support group which uses a Christ-centered recovery process under the guidance of a certified facilitator
• Provide support, encouragement, and information
“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

Our mission as a church is to advance God’s Kingdom by making fully-devoted followers of Christ in Lakewood and the world. This mission comes out of the Great Commission in Matthew 28:18-20 where Jesus commanded His followers to make disciples of all nations. And that is what a fully-devoted follower is: a disciple. Every ministry at LC3 is geared towards making and developing disciples.
