HOW I SHOW UP
• I treat every render like an oil painting — starting with a blank canvas and building depth layer by layer
• Concept drives everything; aesthetics follow intention
• Research first, design second — I need to understand before I create
• Every decision in my projects have a reason
• I iterate relentlessly
DESIGN RESEARCH
• Research Assistant
Research assistant for a design history book, contributing research on art, furniture, interiors, product design, and architecture.

ABOUT ME
Hello!
My name is Layan Qaddumi. I am a junior at the Corcoran School of Art and Design, pursuing a dual degree in Interior Architecture and International Affairs in Washington, D.C., the heart of diplomacy, policy, and cultural exchange.
Studying in D.C. has shaped my perspective on how international narratives and political contexts influence the environments we design and inhabit.
I am deeply interested in integrating cultural, political, and historical narratives into design. I focus on translating both global and local influences through form, materiality, and spatial experience to foster meaningful human connection.

ARTIST RESIDENCE
Project Brief
A work, gallery and living space for charcoal artist Robert Longo in a three-story Georgetown town home. This home showcases his monumental sized charcoal drawings through a triple height space and double height studio.

Centered on a gradation of light and dark, this project builds visual intensity that is deliberately disrupted by a monumental scene (a triple height opening). The work is shaped by Robert Longo’s artistic process, using contrast, dramatic scale, and controlled composition to heighten impact.

Initial Watercolor Sketch - Intensity of Light vs Dark
Rendered using Photoshop

The top floor serves as a private retreat from the emotional weight of Robert Longo’s drawings, defined by lighter materials and soft skylight illumination. The bedroom and reading nook offer a space for reflection beyond the intensity of his work. In contrast, the lower levels house the gallery and studio spaces, which are more public, intense in materials and artistic content.

ROSE MATCHA CAFE
Project Brief
This project proposes an airy Hot Rose Matcha Café inspired by both its site at the United States Capitol and the cultural ritual of matcha. Drawing from the stepped procession between the Capitol Reflecting Pool and the monumental Capitol, the design translates this movement into a sequence where forms diminish in intensity and converge toward a single focal point, creating a calm and intimate spatial experience.

Custom peices were required for this project. The design of the low custom seating was inspired by many eastern cultures.
Rose and matcha are delicate flavors that require concentration in the drink, informing the use of rich, concentrated colors paired with soft, airy materials and textiles that echo the aeration of a latte.

YELLOW KIOSK

Project Brief
This project involved designing a coffee kiosk for the Flagg Building Atrium, using an existing coffee brand—Yellow Café—as the foundation. The concept of Carved Togetherness first emerged in a quick sketch, where two sweeping curves wrap around one another as distinct paths that intersect, overlap, and gather at a shared center. This fluid gesture became a spatial metaphor for connection, embodying Yellow Café’s mission to spark conversation and community over coffee.

In response to the Flagg Building’s quiet and often isolating atmosphere, the kiosk carves out a communal space within its stillness. At its heart is a sunken gathering circle (a modern majlis) reached through a spiraling ramp that wraps around the counter. This movement draws people inward, encouraging pause and interaction.

GRAPHICS
Created a 36-module grid in Adobe InDesign to deconstruct personal photographs below into palettes of color, line, texture, and pattern. Scaled and arranged fragments to produce two composite compositions expressing Radiance, using Photoshop and InDesign.

COLOR & MOOD STUDY

Project Brief
These Photoshop studies serve as a preliminary exploration into softening a D.C. Brutalist hotel through the fluid, organic language of the neighboring sculpture museum.
The process involved quickly iterating through contrasting material palettes—from oxidized earth to deep atmospheric violets.
These mood boards establish a conceptual direction that reimagines the rigid interior as a sophisticated, gallery-inspired sanctuary.
