59 Stock Rams
59.1 Vendor’s warranty - The vendor warrants that any ram sold as a stock ram for the amount in paragraph (j) of the Appendix or more is capable of and effective at natural service. This warranty is a 10 week warranty.
59.2 Purchaser’s rights - If the purchaser proves a breach of warranty then the purchaser may return the ram to the vendor who shall, at the purchaser’s option, either replace the ram with another ram of equal value which is capable of and effective at natural service, or refund the purchase price together with such costs and charges as the purchaser may be entitled to under these Conditions. Notice of a claim must be supported by a veterinary surgeon’s certificate confirming that: (a) the ram’s incapacity or ineffectiveness is not the result of injury, accident or illness happening after the time of the sale: and (b) the purchaser’s breeding stock are not responsible for the ram’s incapacity or ineffectiveness. 55 Female Sheep Proving Barren
55.1 Vendor’s warranty – The vendor warrants that any female sheep sold as being in lamb is in lamb at the time of sale. This warranty is a 21 day warranty
55.2 Purchaser’s rights - If the purchaser proves a breach of warranty he may exercise his rights under Condition 66. Notice of a claim must be supported by a veterinary surgeon’s certificate.
As of 1st January 2021, Lawrie & Symington Limited are not able to offer direct export for sheep due to new exporting rules. If you are a buyer from Northern Ireland, Eire, or the European Union then sheep cannot be moved direct from a sale. It is the responsibility of of the Vendor and/or Purchaser to make the necessary arrangements. 2.5 Sheep must be penned by 09:30am
2.6 There will be minimum reserve (upset) prices for sale entries as follows:
Shearling rams 400 guineas, Ram lambs 300 guineas, Shearling ewes 300 guineas, Ewe lambs 250 guineas. Any sheep sold outside the ring must not be below these minimum prices and must be booked through the Auctioneers. Any sheep failing to reach the upset price in its category will be passed out unsold.
2.7 Sheep will be sold in guineas. A commission of 5p in the guinea plus VAT will be charged to the Vendor. Any charges or costs arising after the sheep have been sold (e.g. additional haulage, accommodation charges, veterinary fees etc.) will be borne by the Purchaser (including overseas buyers)
2.8 The Purchaser to give his full name and home address and pay for all Lots purchased immediately at the close of the sale. No Lot or Lots shall be removed from the sale premises until paid for and a pass out slip obtained from the Auctioneers but each and every lot shall immediately at the fall of the hammer be considered as delivered and be and remain in every respect at the absolute risk and expense of the Purchaser and shall be removed from the sale premises at the Purchaser’s expense. The right of property shall not pass until the full purchase price is paid.
2.9 Purchasers paying by cheque must be prepared to produce reasonable proof of identity
3.0 Sheep can be entered from both MV-Accredited and Non-MV Accredited flocks. MV-Accredited will only be accepted into the market and penned for sale if they are accompanied by a current SRUC certificate of official MVA status which has been correctly completed.
3.1 Sheep entered as Scrapie Monitored must be accompanied by a copy of the SMS certificate
3.2 Sheep catalogued with a Scrapie genotype must be accompanied by a valid certificate
4.0 All tags must comply with UK legislation and HDSBA rules on identification
4.1 All sheep must be branded by the owners with the catalogue numbers only. Substitutes must be declared to the HDSBA and to the Auctioneers not less than 48 hours prior to the sale and must be marked with a red dot not less than one inch in diameter behind the lot number. A maximum of two substitutes will be permitted per Vendor.
5.0 Any animal got by ET must be identified as such in the catalogue
5.1 Any rams with semen retained before sale or females which have been flushed and embryos recovered before sale must be declared in the catalogue and announced at the time of sale. Failure to do so will result in the purchaser having the right to return the sheep and be repaid the purchase price and costs.
5.2 Any female that has been subjected to any abdominal surgery including laparoscopic AI, embryo transfer or Caesarean section must be so declared in the catalogue and must be physically capable of breeding again
6.0 All sheep entered and forward at any sale will be inspected by an official HDSBA Inspector to ensure that:-
(a)their ear tag and lot numbers tally with the catalogue and with current UK legislation
(b)they comply with HDSBA’s breed standard
(c)they are of good conformation and size and/or condition, (minimum weight: for shearling rams 85kg; shearling ewes 70kg; ram lambs 55kg; ewe lambs, 50kg)
(d)they are not incorrectly docked; daggy; faulty in teeth, testicles or udder; lame or showing signs of disease.
(e)any sheep which, in the opinion of the inspectors is urine stained to the extent that it’s a welfare issue will be excluded from the sale
6.2 The expected minimum scrotum circumference (at widest) is for lambs 30cms and for shearlings 35cms. For early season sales the size for ram lambs will be at the discretion of the inspector
6.3 Any animals rejected by the Inspector will be marked by him and shall not be sold during or following the end of the sale
6.4 The Inspector’s decision is final and binding and the Inspector shall be absolved from any responsibility or liability for any action taken as a result of his advice
6.5 The inclusion of any animal in the sale following any inspection is no warranty that the particular animal meets any criterion in respect of any standards or will do so in the future. Neither is it a warranty of health.
7.0 No colouring matter may be used on head or legs. Samples of hair may be collected from randomly selected animals and analysed for the presence of colouring matter. In the event of any sheep being found to have been artificially coloured, the owner will be required forthwith by the Inspector to remove from the sale yard that sheep together with all other sheep in the same consignment. If sheep are found to have been artificially coloured the matter may be referred to the Sales Committee of HDSBA for consideration as to whether any reference should be made to the Disciplinary Committee.
7.1 The use of growth promoters is banned and HDSBA reserves the right to randomly test any sheep offered for sale.
7.2 Any interference with natural tooth growth is not permitted
7.3 All shearlings must have been shorn bare after 1st April in the year of sale.
8.0 All rams, including ram lambs, are warranted by the Vendor to be capable of natural and effective service within 90 days of the sale. If at the expiration of the warranty period a ram is proven incapable of natural and effective service and within 14 days of the expiration of the warranty period a Veterinary Certificate is lodged with the Auctioneers confirming (on the day of examination): (a)the ram is incapable of performing a natural effective service and (b)that the incapacity is not the result of any apparent injury, accident or illness and (c)the Veterinary Surgeon has inspected the Purchaser’s ewes and found them to be in normal, responsible breeding condition; then the Purchaser shall have the option of, either a refund of the purchase price, or accept a ram of similar quality. If the Vendor so wishes he shall be entitled to have access to the ram for a veterinary examination. If a settlement is not reached then an independent arbiter shall be appointed by the Auctioneers and his decision shall be final. The transport costs, veterinary fees etc., involved in returning stock to the Vendor must be borne by the Purchaser. Purchasers are advised to arrange insurance of any rams purchased
8.1 HDSBA does not guarantee the stock getting capabilities of any sheep
9.0 A sale can only be described as dispersal where every registered sheep belonging to that flock is offered for sale. Further, the flock name will thereafter be terminated and cannot be resurrected by the present holder or used by any other member or future member. However, HDSBA retains the right to grant re-use of the flock name on consideration of special circumstances. There will be no need for the sheep to be inspected and where applicable, the sheep will be sold at the end of the sale.
9.1 At a reduction sale all sheep presented for sale will have to be inspected by an HDSBA Inspector. The sheep will be sold in the appropriate sale classes.
10.0 Neither the Auctioneers nor HDSBA can accept responsibility for any errors or omissions
10.1 Neither the Vendor nor the Auctioneers nor HDSBA will be responsible for any accident or injury to persons or property, through fire or any other cause whatsoever, nor for any damage by animals prior to, during or after the sale
While index based selection is important it is also crucial to look at individual trait EBVs for a ram and match them to your flock. Different rams can have the same terminal sire index but with different combinations of EBVs. It should be remembered that stock selection should be made on what pleases the eye and suits your flock and breeding system. Figures (EBVs) should be used as a tool to assist this selection and give supporting information about genetic influences that you cannot see.
Signet’s new monthly, mixed breed analysis increases the commercial focus of existing traits and introduces a series of new EBVs.
Weight adjusted traits - Please note that carcase traits are now weight adjusted. This means that EBVs are a better prediction of carcase composition at a fixed weight as opposed to the previous method of adjusting for age.

• Muscle Depth (mm) – EBV for muscling across the loin at a fixed weight.
• Fat Depth (mm) – EBV for fatness across the loin at a fixed weight.
