Report: IARP ruling on KU hoops expected today By Henry Greenstein hgreenstein@ljworld.com

The long-awaited ruling from the Independent Accountability Resolution Process, which could hand out penalties for NCAA infractions initially alleged four

years ago against the Kansas men’s basketball team, is expected to arrive today, according to a report from Sports Illustrated. KU has been charged with a lack of institutional control and a violation of head coach responsibility,

along with three additional Level I violations, the highest level of severity. The case essentially centers on whether apparel company Adidas was functioning as a booster — a representative of the interests of KU Athletics — when its

agents committed recruiting infractions in the cases of eventual KU athletes Silvio De Sousa and Billy Preston, as well as several other prospective athletes. While Preston never played for KU, De Sousa participated in 20 games

as a freshman, including 15 wins that the NCAA could potentially require the Jayhawks to vacate. As the Journal-World has previously reported, the NCAA also included in May 2020 documentation > IARP, 2B Bill Self

Free State’s Randall commits to golf at South Dakota State By Conner Becker cbecker@ljworld.com

Several area golfers can declare themselves state-bound after a string of strong performances at their regional tournaments on Monday. The Eudora girls golf team, which claimed its first Frontier League title last week, punched its ticket to the Class 4A tourney with a fourthplace overall finish in Wamego. Eudora senior Joellen Vogt finished second individually shooting a team-best 85 through 18 holes. Sophomore Marleigh Grant wasn’t far behind, finishing 11th individually with 95. Rounding out the Cardinals’ state-qualifying finish were freshman Brooklyn Akers in 18th (104), senior Olivia Lawhorn in 54th (134), and junior Brette Hayden, who tied for 56th (137). Free State senior Liza Engelbrecht placed 21st individually (93) to qualify for state at the 6A regional in Topeka. The 4A and 6A tournaments are slated for Oct. 16-17 at Salina Municipal Golf Course and Emporia Municipal Golf Course, respectively.

FSHS, LHS to honor former superintendent at City Showdown Former Lawrence school district superintendent Randy Weseman, who died in January 2022 after a battle with cancer, will be honored Friday with a memorial plaque during the City Showdown between Free State and Lawrence football teams at FSHS. A group of former district administrators plan to honor Weseman before kickoff during a ceremony in the south end zone. Former Free State athletic director Steve Grant said Weseman’s contributions to the creation of matching outdoor athletic facilities at FSHS and LHS in 2009 are part of his recognition. The memorial effort was spearheaded by former school board member Cindy Yulich, former West Middle School principal Mick Lowe, former LHS athletic director Ron Commons, former LHS coach Dirk Wedd and longtime district swim coach Pat Grzenda.

OU reaches middle of final Big 12 season with AP’s top coach, players By Stephen Hawkins Associated Press

OKLAHOMA HEAD COACH BRENT VENABLES runs onto the field with his team before a game against Iowa State on Sept. 30 in Norman, Okla.

Oklahoma is already piling up plenty of accolades in its final Big 12 season. A year after their first losing season since 1998 and the week after a comeback Red River rivalry win over Texas, the fifth-ranked Sooners (6-0, 3-0 Big 12) are the league’s only undefeated team. Oklahoma also has the top coach, top offensive player

and best defensive player so far this season, according to a midseason vote of Associated Press writers who cover the league. Second-year Sooners coach Brent Venables, quarterback Dillon Gabriel and linebacker Danny Stutsman were top picks revealed Tuesday. Oklahoma also had the top firstyear freshman with strong safety Peyton Bowen. “I think it goes without saying ... we’re better in every area. We’re not where

want to be. But this is the next step,” Venables said after the 34-30 win over Texas. “This team is a very determined football team. There’s a lot of belief for having 63 new players on the squad, this is a team that’s close. There’s a lot of trust and respect. We have a very selfless football team.” The Sooners already have a record 14 Big 12 championships, and this is their last season with an opportunity to add to

that total before moving with the Longhorns to the Southeastern Conference next year.

Top coach The Sooners are 6-0 for the 10th time since 2000, when Venables was defensive coordinator for their last national championship. He was later part of two national titles with Clemson before returning to Norman last season.
