ANNIVERSARY: STONEWALL RIOTS

For LGBT Americans, June 28, 1969 was the day that started a movement. Police entered the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York’s Greenwich Village, at 1:20 p.m. and launched a raid. While the police waited for patrol wagons to cart away the arrested suspects and the seized alcohol, the bar’s patrons began to resist. Thirteen people were arrested and four police -E4&90*5&<0*0&("H#*0=&$1&/1-"0<$%%>&F20&*(-15& continued for six nights. The resistance wasn’t planned, nor were the riots that followed.

For the past year, he served on the senate as !"#$%"&'($)*$!"#$+,&,%#$%)--'!­ tee. His original involvement with student government began during a Counseling 100 class where Pablo decided to become more involved with the things that happened between classes since his high school did not of­ fer those kinds of opportunities. ./(',0$ "'1$ !'-#$ &1$ %"&'($ )*$ +­ nance, Zamorano said he had a strong sense of leadership in guiding the committee’s direc­ tion. But this inadvertently re­ sulted in him trying to take all the tasks on himself which not only overloaded him, but made some other members unhappy. “So I had to learn to delegate throughout the year, assign tasks and make members feel includ­ ed,” said Zamorano. “I learned to 2)(3$2'!"$)!"#(14$5$2&1$6#+,'!#78$ more abrasive at the beginning of !"#$ 8#&($ &,6$ 5$ "&6$ %),9'%!1$ 2'!"$ other chairs and other members. I learned to treat people with tact and I learned how to approach them if I disagreed with them.” Zamorano said he believes that his skills in delegating tasks and

working with others will help him during his presidency. Cur­ rently many De Anza College programs are being cut and he said he expects to be negotiating with program coordinators over +,&,%'&7$%),1!(&',!14 Zamorano said the hardest part of running for office was managing his time. “I was tak­ ing 20 units that quarter, and I was still in the senate as chair of finance so I still had those responsibilities, and senate I would say is like is an eight­ hour job a week, except you don’t get paid,” he said. “If you’re more involved, you put in more hours. Like the chairs put in more hours, presidents put in more hours.” But Zamorano’s work is far from over. His new goals are to increase student involvement in the DASB and to increase the senate’s involvement by collaborating more with clubs and activism on campus. He said, “The way I want to change our campus basically is to raise that awareness and hope­ fully we can raise our concerns of our budget, not just the DASB budget, I mean the state budget and the educational budget.”

Three years ago, 23­year­old Vince Mendoza decided to attend De Anza College after a hiatus since he had left high school during senior year, without his diploma. Now he is the new student trustee for De Anza. “I left high school to get a job,” said Mendoza. “I was going to grad­ uate on time and was unfocused. I went back to get [my GED], and came to De Anza two years later and been here ever since.” Mendoza said even though he was unfocused in high school, he was still attracted to being in­ volved and helping his commu­ nity. He was on the youth advisory board for a project called Friday Night Live, a positive alternative to going partying for youth. “It exploded as a program,” Mendoza said with a chuckle. “At De Anza, I joined LEAD. I was the vice president for that and got really into the programs for the people who need the most help. It was rewarding for me to do work like that.” Mendoza said although he has had a fairly privileged life since childhood, he still feels a desire to help those who haven’t been so privileged. He comes from a third­generation Chicano family that he said provided a strict but loving at­ mosphere. His mother stayed home and watched him and his siblings while their father went to college and became an engi­ neer. The incoming student trustee lists watching movies, dancing and cooking as his hobbies. “I like cooking fusion,” he said. “I make fried chicken with srira­ cha. Sometimes my dad would forget to buy food and me and my sister would rummage through the cabinets to make food. Some­

times we’d have noodles but no sauce so we’d use butter.” Mendoza said he wouldn’t name any particular person as "'1$0(#&!#1!$',9/#,%#:$;/!$(&!"#($ he is inspired by those who have won at the American dream. “I like people who are really <)2#(*/7$&,6$%),+6#,!:=$>#,6)­ za said. “People who come from nothing and become something.” Mendoza said last year’s trust­ ee, Emily Kinner, was a mentor for him and he would like to fol­ low in her footsteps with many trips to Sacramento. He explained that he got to know Kinner while working with LEAD and when he found out what the trustee posi­ tion entailed, he thought it was a <#(*#%!$+!4$ Mendoza said he wants to fos­ ter more student activism. “I’m going to do whatever I can do as a citizen by voting, going to Sacramento and maybe get arrested,” Mendoza said. “I will do as much as I can as long as it doesn’t cause myself harm.”

Poklewski has been a member of De Anza College music faculty since 1977. During her tenure she transformed De Anza’s piano program, giving it international reputation and acclaim. Several of her students have won recog­ nition and top places in both in­ ternational and national competi­ tions. In fact the Anna Powlewski Academy of Music was named after her and founded by her and one of her former students. Before she retires, Poklewski will teach piano at De Anza for one last quarter this fall. She said, “I will practically be teaching piano for no pay and out of the kindness of my heart.” The per­ formance during fall quarter will be the last advanced piano perfor­ mance at De Anza. The future of the advanced piano department is grim. With mas­ sive budget cuts and the loss of Poklewski, the music department will be crippled. Poklewski said, “With the way things are happening, the music department will possibly never recover. It’s very tragic.”

The show went on with a comfortable and interactive atmosphere. There were nine performances in total, ranging from skits and hip­ hop, to stand­up. Sign­ups to perform were held until the last minute before the showcase had begun. But Stimson said that this is what creates the true spirit of the showcase; there is no pressure. For her, in a way, it is an “anti­ performance, because nothing

is structured.” Stimson holds no expectations about the showcase, and lets the evening create itself. She also loves that no one dictates the event, and the idea remains of just being offered a space. “[In performance] there is that sense of you have to hit a mark, or you have to do this, you have to do that,” said Stimson, “as opposed to just experiencing you own artistry. I want them to simply experience the construct of their art and an audience. And look what we have, it’s a fantastic space.”

have proven to be viable options. Most open parking lots in the area are either occupied, in poor con­ dition, or would charge thousands of dollars to host an event like the Autocross. Imagine being late for a class presentation and having to make a quick trip to one of De Anza Col­ lege’s bathrooms to powder your ")&%*()"+,(-)(!".(,)/0&%+1(&-#".­ 2"3(2"(-4%(!+-4($%"-%0()1($#56/&'(( The conditions of public rest­ rooms at De Anza are deplorable, especially considering that the campus is located in one of the wealthiest areas in Santa Clara County. The four custodial staff we have left can only do so much in

the way of picking up after us, so it is up to students to treat the public restrooms with respect. Unfortunately, human nature dic­ tates that common resources will be exploited, and in this case, also trashed. cated in the L­quad, situated on the eastern edge of campus. Due to the convenient location, these bathrooms get the most usage – but that is not an excuse for peo­ ple to trash it. One of the only places on cam­ pus that has decent bathrooms is the Kirsch Center for Envi­ ronmental Studies. The prevail­ ing culture at the Kirsch Center promotes the conservation of re­ sources and to respect the envi­ ronment, which most likely has rubbed off on bathroom users there. The Administration building besides the main quad is also a location that many covet for its cleanliness. It is also almost al­

ways clear of any crowds or lines -4#-( !+%( )/-( )1( -4%( 0))5( ./02"3( passing periods in the morning. Other areas on campus, howev­ er, need to catch up and students need to start acting like adults in­ stead of spoiled children whose mother always cleans up after them. Most who attend community college are over 18, an age that implies adulthood. Once people reach this milestone, they should be capable of respecting public spaces and others who share it.

Women should not have to choose between being a mother and having a career. However, in the U.S., the Family and Medical Leave Act requires employers to offer new mothers only 12 weeks of unpaid leave. In comparison to most other countries, the U.S. does little to support mothers during maternity leave, placing working women in the U.S. at a major disadvantage economically and socially. The argument over whether or

A new mother and her family may not be able to afford to have 12 weeks without a source of in­ come. Complications and recovery af­ ter the birth take up a large part of those 12 weeks and a mother needs to spend that time with her baby. The current system puts low­income mothers and families at a disadvantage if they need to work to pay their bills. The law should be changed to catch up with other developed countries such as Canada and the United Kingdon.

Dear La Voz:

Thank you for your coverage of Team HBV’s free Hepatitis B testing. Tragically, many people are afraid to get tested because of the shame that is associated with this disease, and their condition goes untreated as a result. Many people also go unvaccinated, even through three doses of Hepatitis B vaccine provides life-long immunity. Expense is no excuse for going without protection against Hepatitis B: under the new health care law, preventative care such as vaccinations is free to those with health insurance, and those who do not have insurance can pay on a sliding scale at local Planned Parenthood clinics.

For an institution of higher learning to so grossly misspell a word in a headline story seems incongruous and unbelievable if not laughable! I assume you meant grievances instead of greivences. The first rule we learned in our English class was “i before e except after c.” The mistake was furthered by “--vences” instead of “---vances.” Please consider yourselves reprimanded and take steps to not have such a disaster again. Spellcheck?
