CAÑA FLEC HA POUFS This collection takes inspiration from sombrero vueltiaos — traditional colombian hats — which have for many generations been made by the Zenú people in the northern reaches of the country. Working together with master artisans from the small town of Tuchin, we have ‘reimagined’ this weaving tradition into new forms. The poufs are made from caña flecha — an indigenous local palm fiber — which is dyed using color extracted from local leaves and plants. Long thin strips of the fiber are finely braided together into strands which are then sewn into a series of concentric circles.

TALABARTERO COLLECTION The leather poufs and pillows in this collection are inspired by the equestrian heritage of Colombia’s coffee growing region. Talabartero translates as ‘master saddler,’ and the collection draws upon the expert craftsmanship and fine detailing—the stitching, the braiding, the embroidery, and the hand tooling— that characterize the best of vintage saddles from the area. We’ve partnered with master craftsman Edgar Beltran Jaramillo and the skilled team in his Bogotá-based workshop to bring this collection to life. Each piece is crafted from a saturated jewel-toned color palette that draws on the works of Colombian artist Fernando Botero.

MAKING THE COLLECTION With our Talabartero Collection, we have teamed up with Colombian master artisan Edgar Beltran Jaramillo. Edgar was educated and worked for many years as an engineer, before he made a switch and decided to follow his lifelong desire to work with his hands. He attended Escuela de Artes y Oficios Santo Domingo in Bogotá, a school started by two Colombian designers (Beatrice Dávila de Santo Domingo and Poli Mallarino) as a passion project, with the goal of preserving Colombia’s artisanal heritage. It was there that he studied and honed his craft of working with leather. Ours was a collaboration that was a good number of years in the making. Before we really had an idea of where we wanted to go in terms of shapes and forms, we played with color palette. We were drawn to Fernando Botero’s paintings, and to his use of flat, bold color. Most especially, it was his painting of La Dama—which had been hanging out on our inspiration board—that kept pulling us in. So that’s where we started riffing from. As so often happens when we are developing a collection, we went through some starts and stops. We initially played around with mineral dyes and hand painting vegetable-tanned leather. We really wanted to make that work. But we went round and round on that front; we kept hitting roadblocks in terms of consistency and texture. Eventually, we made the decision to move on, and turned our attention to sourcing our palate from existing options. Once our colors were settled on, we continued to come back to the La Dama painting (where an

unspecified Colombian First Lady sits powerfully on horseback.) And we started to research vintage saddlery. We poured over archival images (Edgar from the library there in Bogotá, and us from our studio in NYC) and then we started to riff on some of the techniques—the stitching, the braiding, the embroidery, and the hand tooling—we saw used over and over in these vintage pieces. The name of the collection, Talabartero, translates as ‘Master Saddlery’. Edgar was incredibly patient and meticulous, fine-tuning techniques that were new to him and his team. Each step of the way—and, again, this was over a handful of years—really reinforced what a good working team we are. Edgar’s attention to detail is remarkable, and he was so game to try everything we threw at him. We’ll look to grow this collection moving forward. There were a good many techniques that we looked at and started to play with along the way—such as board-formed shapes—that didn’t make it into this first round, but that we’ll incorporate as this collection, and our relationship with Edgar and his team, grows. BOLIVIAN HAMMOC KS Boldly patterned, supple + luxurious, these hamacas atadas are the last word as far as hammocks are concerned. Long the traditional bed of the Guarayo Indians, their design has been fine-tuned over centuries. Incorporating a series of successive Pre-Columbian techniques — from the spinning of the thread, to the weaving and braiding of the design, to the crocheted detailing of the sides — each hammock represents a month’s-worth of skilled craftsmanship by women in the remote village of Urubicha in the Bolivian Amazon.

K HOVAR C OLLECTION This collection takes its lead from the tribal villages of Hazaribagh in northeastern India, where the walls of the villages’ mud homes are decorated with rambling, figurative murals. A canvas of dark charcoal earth is first laid down and left to dry, and then covered with a pale kaolin clay; before the top layer dries, women in the villages brush away the lighter earth with a broken comb or fingers to create lyrical silhouettes. The mural-painting is part of a matrimonial ritual for the women which takes place every spring during the marriage season. Fleeting in nature, each year the murals are washed away with the heavy monsoon rains – and then once again started anew. Drawn to the exaggerated scale and the boldness of the Khovar designs, we commissioned women in the villages to do three paintings for us (leaf, vine, flower) – which we have translated into a collection of fabrics and wallpapers.

TARZ BEDC OVERS The bedcoverings in this collection represent a pairing of Moroccan traditions. The cotton panels draw on the weaving done for centuries to create haik—a traditional, long rectangular woman’s garment that wraps and drapes around the body. Our blankets, woven on pedal looms in the town of Ouazzane, mimic the weave and coloration of the haik, while the individual panels of the blankets are then bound by varying embroidery (tarz) stitches, in both traditional and modernized renditions. With a textured, ribbed weave achieved by spinning seven individual cotton threads together, the blankets have a soft, organic heft.

MOROC CAN POM POM BLANKETS These blankets, known as batania, are woven exclusively for l’aviva home in a tiny weaving studio hidden down narrow pathways on the outskirts of the Marrakesh Medina. Trimmed with dramatically oversized pom poms and woven from 100% hand spun wool, the heirloom textiles are a stylized rendition of the traditional blankets used to protect against freezing temperatures in the High Atlas Mountains.
