Adults and children ages 3 to 5 work together while learning about nature, shapes, colors, ABC’s and 123’s. Classes are held on select Wednesdays from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and Thursdays from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Each registration is good for one child and one adult. Members $8, Non-members $18 August 7 or 8 | Butterfly Migration This month’s class focuses on the butterflies that call Lauritzen Gardens their home. We will take magnifying glasses on a scavenger hunt to see how many butterflies we can find. Pre-registration is required by July 31. September 4 or 5 | Bees Learn about bees and what these amazing pollinators do to help us in the garden. Pre-registration is required by August 28. October 9 or 10 | Spiders and Other Bugs that Spin Webs This month’s class focuses on spiders and other bugs that spin webs. We will head into the garden to locate and draw webs. Pre-registration is required by October 2.

November 6 or 7 | Feathered Friends There are a multitude of birds that make their home in the garden. In this class, we will go on a nature walk to locate different birds and their nests. Pre-registration is required by October 31. December 4 or 5 | Five Senses This month’s class focuses on the Marjorie K. Daugherty Conservatory. We’ll talk about our five senses and how to use them to better experience the garden. Pre-registration is required by November 27. January 8 or 9 | ABC’s This month’s class focuses on the Marjorie K. Daugherty Conservatory. We’ll explore the alphabet and the flowers, plants, and trees that call the conservatory home. Pre-registration is required by January 1. February 5 or 6 | Colors of the Rainbow This month’s class focuses on the Marjorie K. Daugherty Conservatory. We’ll explore the colors of the rainbow and where they may be found in the conservatory. Pre-registration is required by January 29. March 4 or 5 | Rascally Rabbits In this month’s class, participants will take a walk through the garden to find evidence of rascally rabbits. Pre-registration is required by February 26.
YOUTH AND FAMILY PROGRAMS April 8 or 9 | Erosion This month’s class focuses on the woodland waterfall. We will explore the good side and the bad side of water in the garden. Pre-registration is required by April 1. May 6 or 7 | Frogs and Toads This month’s class focuses on frogs and toads throughout the garden. We’ll talk about the difference between frogs and toads as well as what they eat, where they live, and how they use their senses like us. Pre-registration is required by April 29.

In order for curious minds to bloom, it is essential to plant a love of reading at a young age. Join the Omaha Public Library in the garden each month for stories that celebrate gardens, plants, insects and more, and discover the joys of nature, movement, music, and literature. Programs are presented from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and are geared for preschool aged children, but all ages are welcome. This is a free program. Pre-registration is requested. Experience nature from a new angle in these garden-themed yoga sequences designed for the whole family! Bring your mat and stand tall like a tree, bend your legs like a butterfly, fold like a flower, and fly like a bird in these classes, designed to encourage playful, mindful movement for all ages and abilities. Classes are held at 8 a.m. and will be outdoors if weather allows. One registration is good for the whole family (any combination of four people with at least one adult). Make beautiful floral designs to display at home or provide as a gift. Each workshop has its own unique theme which allows you to enjoy a new experience each time you participate. Participants will learn basic floral design skills that can be used to create all types of arrangements. No floral design knowledge or experience is necessary. All supplies are included. To ensure the freshest, longest-lasting arrangements, our designers select flowers from the warehouse the week of class to fit the class theme. Printing with Plants September 8 | 2 to 4 p.m. Participants will take a leisurely hike around the garden and collect fallen plant material to bundle up and steam into a one-of-a-kind piece of artwork. Cutting and Piecing a Quilt October 27 | 2 to 4 p.m. Ever wanted to learn how to quilt? Already have experience but want to get back into the practice? In this class, participants will cut down and sew back together a collection of fabric to create a miniature quilt. Building A Quilt November 10 | 2 to 4 p.m. Transform a flat piece of fabric into a lovely, billowy quilt! Learn how to construct the three critical layers of a quilt, how to design a quilt, and how to finish a quilt. Participants can use the pieced tops constructed in the previous class or they can choose to create a whole cloth quilt with the fabric provided.

Embroidering and Embellishing Your Naturally Dyed Quilt November 24 | 2 to 4 p.m. Members $39, Non-members $49 Embellish your quilt with thread that has been dyed with plants. Participants will discover and learn a Japanese technique called sashiko, as well as some European styles of embellishment. Participants who did not take the previous quilting classes can practice the techniques on a piece of naturally-dyed cloth. Ask questions and enjoy the more than 2,000 plants that make their home in the garden. This tour could be your prelude to a wonderfully romantic date or an evening out with friends. MO NA R C H WALK September 14 | 10 a.m. to noon Since butterfly counters in Mexico are seeing 150% more Monarch butterflies this year than last year, we should be seeing higher numbers of Monarchs in the garden this fall. SH A KE SPEAR E ON TOUR October 15 | 6 to 8 p.m. Nebraska Shakespeare’s 14th annual season of Shakespeare On Tour will make a stop at Lauritzen Gardens to perform Othello. In the center of it all, a magnificent and majestic 20-foot-tall poinsettia tree stands tall. Surrounded by a cascade of twinkling white lights, glittering ornaments and the whir and whistle of model garden trains, this show evokes the warmest greetings of goodwill and cheer.
