I have explored the idea of brokenness in past collections and how once those pieces are put together they are made more beautiful, strong & resilient. But what about the pieces before they’re put back together? Are they too, beautiful? Do we look at these pieces with a lens of hope? They glimmer as possibility passes over them. They have potential; they pull in and out much like the glimmer of a candle in the darkness.
Sometimes we feel like mere fragments of ourselves. At times even the biggest blessings in our lives can make us feel overextended, and unlike ourselves. Perhaps turning on the news or scrolling social media brings a heaviness that leaves us in pieces. I am confident that the suffering happening worldwide will most certainly chisel away small pieces of ourselves. We start to forget who we are at our core, reaching for the pieces that make us whole; reaching for our broken shards and adhesive to mend our fractured spirits.
This third iteration of the Glimmer series focuses less on meditative markings, covering a space and more on thoughtful and restrained marks that create movement and space. I started naturally falling into a more contemplative place painting these works, instead of allowing the process to wash over me. I became the driver of big decisions, one mark could shift the whole experience for the viewer; from balanced to a gentle tension.

Laurel-Dawn graduated from Auburn University with a BFA in graphic design with a strong focus in fine art. She has been working in the design field for over 10 years and painting in the margins of her chaotic and beautiful life as a wife and mother. In 2020, Laurel-Dawn took the leap into being a fine artist, full time.
Laurel-Dawn has always drawn inspiration from the lines made from her Creator; the natural lines of a rigid mountainside, or the dramatic curves seen in leaves and flower petals. She strives to glorify beauty that already exists from her small corner of the world; embracing the delicate, yet messy process of being an artist.
Laurel-Dawn currently resides in Homewood, Alabama with her husband and two boys.
