East Lothian Countryside Ranger Service


The Countryside Ranger Services programme of activities offered below, has been designed to be suitable for children and young people aged 5 -16 years. Children under 16 must be accompanied by a supervisory adult. Advanced booking is required for all events. There is a charge of ÂŁ2 per person per event, payable in advance. Meeting place details will be made available once you have booked your place. Bookings/Payments can be made via the following web address: www.eastlothian.bookinglive.com/summer-activities

Please note that you may be required to purchase pay and display tickets for events based at some coastal locations. A number of the coastal car parks also have vehicle height restrictors at their entrances. WEDNESDAY 5TH JULY MINIBEAST HUNT 14:00-15:30 DUNBAR Join the Ranger and explore the microscopic world of minibeasts! Find out more about the important jobs these creatures undertake in our woodlands. Families. Children must be 5+.

THURSDAY 6TH JULY RIVER DIPPING 14:00-15:00 HADDINGTON Come and find out what creatures lurk beneath the river. Bring wellies or old shoes. Families. Children must be 5+.

TUESDAY 11TH JULY ROCK SCHOOL 11:00-12:30 WHITESANDS. Join the rangers to learn about what used to live along our coasts and find evidence of fossilised forests, corals and lots more! Families. Children must be 5+.

THURSDAY 13TH JULY SEASHORE SAFARI 11:00-12:30 DUNBAR Join us for a guddle amongst the rockpools and see what amazing creatures we can find. Bring wellies and a plastic container. Families. Children must be 5+.


WEDNESDAY 19TH JULY TRACKS AND TRAILS 11:00-14:00 DIRLETON Drop in and take part in an array of wildlife activities. Learn about animal tracks, trails and expend some energy nature based orienteering course. Families. Children must be 5+.

THURSDAY 20TH JULY MINIBEAST HUNT 14:00-15:30 TRANENT Join the Ranger and explore the microscopic world of minibeasts! Find out more about the important jobs these creatures undertake in our woodlands. Cinnabar moth caterpillar

FRIDAY 14TH JULY MOTH MAGIC 10:00-11:30 HADDINGTON Come and discover a wonderful variety of moths of all shapes and colours and help us set them free from the moth traps. Families. Children must be 5+.

Introduction to experiencing nature through meditation skills, bringing attention to breath and body during stillness and movement. Wear suitable outdoor clothing.

August 27th

Carfraemill via Lammer Law A 10.5 mile (17km) walk over the Lammermuir hills to Carfraemill, finishing with a pint in the Carfraemill Inn! A moderate hill walk, mostly along well-defined tracks, but with some open hill walking.

2018 January 28th

Mills and Hills A 10 mile (16km) circular walk from Haddington, making our way along the river, through farmland and past ancient hill forts in the Garleton Hills, all bathed in sunshine (subject to availability).

February 25th

High Hopes Perfect for beginners to hill walking with a good level of fitness. Our 6.5 mile (10km) circular walk mainly uses estate tracks to take us around Hopes Reservoir and up to Lammer Law summit.

Return transport will be provided.

September 24th

Gullane, Gosford and Geese A 10 mile (16km) walk following a figure of eight route between Gullane and Gosford Estate, returning via the coast. The hike is mostly along well used footpaths, although there will be some walking on soft sand and other uneven surfaces.

October 29th

On the edge Hike up from oak wooded valleys to Dunbar Common on this varied and scenic circular 11.5 mile (18km) hike following steep and uneven paths and tracks.

November 26th

Winter wonderland A chance to warm up on this 9 mile (14.5km) circular walk around East Linton in the winter time using good tracks and quiet roads by fields, woodlands and rivers.

INFORMATION AND BOOKING Cost: ÂŁ5 per person per hike. Walking boots are recommended for all hikes, as well as waterproofs, hats and gloves. Routes may be varied depending on the weather conditions. Remember we can only proceed at the pace of the slowest person. Please Note: These hikes are not suitable for children or for people with restricted mobility. On the hikes, please bring along a packed lunch. Sorry, but no dogs are permitted on any of these hikes. Emergency contact details and any relevant medical information will be required from all participants before undertaking these hikes. This information will be treated in the strictest confidence and will be destroyed after the walk. A home or personal contact number will also be required in the event of a hike cancellation. As places are limited, bookings must be made prior to each and every hike.

March 26th

Law to Law A 9 mile (14.5km) walk appreciating two of the most iconic landmarks in East Lothian. The walk will start with a climb to the top of Traprain Law before descending to the river Tyne to join the John Muir Way to North Berwick Law to appreciate its vistas. A moderate walk (with steep climb at the start and the end) along well defined paths through open countryside.

Return transport will be provided.

April 30th

Tyninghame Triangle Enjoy the arrival of spring on this 8.5 mile (13.5km) triangular walk from Tyninghame using a mixture of woodland tracks, beaches, quiet roads and core paths.

May 28th

Tyne Valley Circuit A moderate 10 mile (16km) walk around part of the historic Tyne valley, taking in Butterdean, Saltoun and the Pencaitland Railway Walk.

June 25th

Coastal Safari Join the Ranger for an 8 mile (13km) walk along the coast, taking in the seabirds, marine life and coastal plants of East Lothian. Finish with an ice-cream at Gullane!

Return transport will be provided

July 30th

Mines and Lines An 8 mile (13km) walk following old rail and waggonways through the former coal-mining areas around Ormiston and Elphinstone.
