From the associate publisher's desk Introducing Annie Diaz, Associate Publisher for Latino Connection Magazine – “You can’t stop a woman on a mission” This issue of Latino Connection Magazine is special for us because we are dedicating it to the Women in Our Communities! As a professional woman and an advocate in our community, I’m truly honored to join the Latino Connection Magazine’s family! As the Associate Publisher I look forward to rebranding and bringing new ideas to the table, but foremost to introduce our culture to those that are still eager to learn about it! I want to engage not only our Latino community, but to embrace the diversity that exist among us. I truly believe in crosscultural experiences and I’m proud to live in a community that embraces it. As a woman I reflect in all the adversities and challenges in life and reminisce on how I was able to overcome some of them. I thank God for all those that doubted me and confronted me for being the strong, independent and assertive female that I am, as that has been the force that has ignited my passion to proceed and overall, become

successful. In a society dominated by fear and lack of self- confidence, a woman can stop and not move forward. I on the other hand, was determined to overcome these fears with strong determination. What determines success? To many it means money, the ability to obtain a great job and sustain a high-level career. I believe success is defined by your ability to overcome fear, distress, racism, betrayal, and all the other negative elements you can imagine. I am grateful for the wonderful people that surround me and those that encourage and believe in me. That is very essential to a woman. The love of her family and the admiration of their loved ones can drive a woman to succeed. Although all this is relevant, I find that the most important thing is what we think about ourselves. Many of us are afraid to celebrate success and pat ourselves on the back. Let us celebrate our success and our accomplishments no matter how big or small they are! We are custom to seeing women in

assistant positions, which there’s no wrong in that, but why can’t we aspire to become the actual Manager, President, CEO, or any other leadership role? We are smart, we are talented, and we are fierce! Therefore, let us chase our goals and reward ourselves by making this possible. We challenge ourselves by asking, Are we ready? Are we educated? Are we the right one? How would we ever know if we do not stand up and go after it? One of the most important things I’ve learned in my career is to never give up! Surround yourself with good people, work hard, stay focused, be passionate and dream big! Associate yourself with other strong and determined women that are driven to succeed. Also, find yourself a mentor; someone who’s sincere, encourages you and will help you reach your goals. We always want to hear the good, but it’s important to find mentors or coaches that deliver what we need and not what we want to hear, as harsh as it may sound. I always recommend three mentors, one in the same career path, one in another industry, and one of the opposite sex. The importance of the variance is that you will see their perspective and be ready to face any challenges as they arise. I’m eternally grateful for the mentors in my life! I still remember when I took the leap of faith and decided to run my own business leaving behind the security of a full-time job with a great company, pay, benefits and a great staff. But the rewards are greater…I get to spend more time with my family, at my home, and overall, do what I love best! There’s no greater feeling than that! Like the women on our cover, our community is full of many brilliant hardworking women who are ready to lead us to a better future. Therefore, take the lead, stop chasing people and chase your dreams and always remember, you can’t stop a woman on a mission! With love always,

Desde el escritorio del editor Presentamos a Annie Díaz, Editora Asociada de Latino Connection Magazine – "No puedes detener a una mujer con una misión." ¡Este número de la revista Latino Connection es muy especial para nosotros porque lo estamos dedicando a las mujeres de nuestra comunidad! Como mujer profesional y líder en nuestra comunidad, me siento verdaderamente honrada de unirme a la familia de la revista Latino Connection. Como Editora Asociada, espero poder remarcar y traer nuevas ideas a la mesa, ¡pero, sobre todo para introducir nuestra cultura a los que todavía están deseosos por aprender sobre ello! Quiero involucrar no sólo a nuestra comunidad Latina, sino a abrazar la diversidad que existe entre nosotros. Realmente creo en las experiencias transculturales y estoy orgullosa de vivir en una comunidad que acepta este hecho. Como mujer, reflexiono en todas las adversidades y desafíos de la vida y rememoro cómo pude vencer a algunos de ellos. Doy gracias a Dios por todos los que dudaron de mí y me confrontaron por ser la mujer fuerte, independiente y asertiva que soy, ya que esa ha sido la fuerza que ha encendido mi pasión para proceder y en general, llegar a ser exitosa. En una sociedad dominada por el miedo y la falta de confianza en sí misma, una mujer puede detenerse y no avanzar. Yo, por otro lado, estaba decidida a superar estos temores con firme determinación. ¿Qué determina el éxito? Para muchos significa dinero, la capacidad de obtener un buen trabajo y mantener una carrera de alto nivel.

Creo que el éxito se define por su capacidad de superar el miedo, la angustia, el racismo, la traición y todos los otros elementos negativos que puede imaginar. Estoy agradecida por la gente maravillosa que me rodea y por aquellos que me alientan y creen en mí. Eso es muy esencial para una mujer. El amor de su familia y la admiración de sus seres queridos pueden conducir a una mujer a triunfar. Aunque todo esto es relevante, encuentro que lo más importante es lo que pensamos de nosotras mismas. Muchas de nosotras tenemos miedo de celebrar el éxito y darnos palmaditas en la espalda. ¡Celebremos nuestro éxito y nuestros logros sin importar cuán grandes o pequeños sean! Estamos acostumbrados a ver a las mujeres en puestos de asistente, no hay nada malo en eso, pero ¿por qué no podemos aspirar a convertirnos en el Gerente, Presidente, CEO, o cualquier otra posición de liderazgo? Somos inteligentes, somos talentosas, ¡y somos feroces! Por lo tanto, persigamos nuestras metas y nos recompensamos haciendo esto posible. A veces nos retamos a nosotras mismas preguntando, ¿Estamos listas? ¿Tenemos la educación necesaria? ¿Somos la persona ideal? ¿Cómo sabremos si no nos levantamos y vamos tras lo que queremos? ¡Una de las cosas más importantes que he aprendido en mi carrera es nunca rendirme! ¡Rodearse de gente buena, trabaja duro, mantente enfocada, ser apasionada y seguir soñando en grande!

Asóciense con otras mujeres fuertes, determinadas, y deseosas de tener éxito. También, búsquense un mentor; alguien que es sincero, te alienta y te ayudará a alcanzar tus metas. Siempre queremos escuchar lo positivo, pero es importante encontrar mentores o entrenadores sinceros que nos aconsejen por lo que necesitamos y no lo que queremos oír, tan duro como pueda sonar. Siempre recomiendo tres mentores, uno en el mismo camino de carrera/oficio, uno en otra industria, y uno del sexo opuesto. La importancia de la variación es que usted verá otras perspectivas y estará listo para enfrentar cualquier desafío a medida que surjan. ¡Estoy eternamente agradecida por los mentores en mi vida! Todavía recuerdo cuando tomé el salto de fe y decidí dirigir mi propio negocio dejando atrás la seguridad de un trabajo de tiempo completo con una gran empresa, sueldo, beneficios y un gran personal. Pero las recompensas son mayores... ¡puedo pasar más tiempo con mi familia, en mi casa, y en general, hacer lo que más disfruto! ¡No hay mayor felicidad que esa! Como las mujeres en nuestra portada, nuestra comunidad está llena de muchas mujeres trabajadoras y brillantes, dispuestas a llevarnos a un futuro mejor. My name is Juan Valencia. I’m Colombian, and I have worked in the industry of beauty products for more than ten years. Nowadays, I have my own company, Kiros Beauty LLC, a wholesale distributor of multicultural beauty products. I have decided to write a column in the Latino Connection Magazine to share with you my own experiences and opinions concerning this industry, its tendencies, and the activities related to the business. “Amapelo” y sus raíces cafetaleras Por Juan Valencia

Mi nombre es Juan Valencia. Soy colombiano y he trabajado en la industria de productos cosméticos por más de diez años. Hoy en día, ya cuento con mi propia empresa, Kiros Beauty LLC, una distribuidora de productos multiculturales de belleza. He decidido escribir una columna en Latino Connection Magazine para compartir con ustedes tanto mis experiencias como mis opiniones acerca de esta industria, sus tendencias, y las diversas actividades relacionadas con la misma. Path to citizenship for Dreamers? By Oscar Barbosa

Some legislators remain hopeful to provide a path to citizenship for Dreamers. Since the new Republican Party now controls the White House, Congress and the Senate; immigrants across the country have grown worried about their future, especially considering that an aggressive deportation policy was used as flagship rhetoric by Donald Trump to become the 45th President of the United States. See Marwa Eltagouri, from the Tribune. So far, immigration enforcement has not been too different from the Obama Administration.

In the first six months of the new administration the arrests performed by ICE officers increased, but the deportations did not. USA Today reported that in the final three months of the Obama administration, ICE averaged 9,134 arrests per month; compared to an average of 13,085 each month under Trump. ICE raids into homes, in early hours of the mornings, or at work places now aim at registering as many undocumented people as possible. However, the government lacks the capacity to effectively deport the number of people they have detained. This according to DHS Secretary Kelly, in an internal memorandum. See Dara Lind, from The Vox. USA Today also reported that “in the final three months of the Obama administration, the agency averaged 22,705 deportations per month”, [compared to 16,895 per month during the first four months of Trumps administration]. Undocumented youth “Dreamers” or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients are in special danger of losing their immigration status. First, Trump promised during his campaign that he would end DACA, second, deportation proceedings against people with DACA has increased

under Trump, and third, a few states have told the administration that they would sue the federal government if DACA was not terminated. In September 5th 2017 the program was terminated. See Michael Shear from the NYT. Even before the DACA program was terminated, the administration had been using bogus accusations of gang membership in order to begin their removal. The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a class action suit against the administration for fabricating bogus accusations of gang membership in order to deport immigrant youth. In a statement one of the youth in removal said that “The police and immigration agents are arresting kids because they think they look like gang members, but youth are the future of this country and they have a lot to offer.” ICE officials wouldn’t couldn’t comment on a pending lawsuit. In 2016, our offices represented two youth falsely accused of gang activity, one of them continues fighting his case. According to the Washington Examiner, terminations and revocations of DACA increased over time to a total of 2,139 - due to criminal charges, or gang accusations.

The last hope remains in the legislature where The Bridge Act (H.R. 496), Recognizing America's Children Act (H.R. 1468), the Dream Act (S. 1615 & H.R. 3440) and the Hope Act (H.R. 3591); all remain as viable options to give at least to the Dreamers an option to remain in the U.S. • The Bridge Act (H.R. 496): No path to citizenship, only work authorization. • Recognizing America's Children Act (H.R. 1468): With Path to Citizenship that might take 10 years. • Dream Act 2017 (S. 1615 & H.R. 3440): With Path to Citizenship that might take 13 years. • Hope Act (H.R. 3591): With Path to Citizenship of at least 5 years. En una declaración, un joven en proceso de remoción indico: “La policía y los agentes de migración están arrestando a jóvenes sólo porque aparentan ser miembros de pandillas, pero los jóvenes son el futuro de de este país, y tienen mucho que ofrecer”. Los oficiales de ICE no han hecho ningún comentario respecto a la demanda pendiente. En 2016, nuestro oficiales representaron a dos jóvenes falsamente acusados de actividad pandillera, uno de ellos continúa luchando por su caso. De acuerdo con el Washington Examiner, las cancelaciones y revocaciones de DACA se

incrementaron con el tiempo, llegando a un total de 2,139, a causa de cargos criminales o acusaciones de pandillerismo, según se muestra a continuación.

“Fête en Blanc” a French Tradition in Lancaster, PA By Annie Diaz

“If you haven’t been to a Fête en Blanc Party, you have no idea what you are missing!” I’ve had the privilege to attend several Fête en Blanc parties in Lancaster, PA and recently attended the inaugural “Fête en Noir” party, held on January 27, 2018. We interviewed Fête en Blanc’s Board President, Joe Hess, resident of Lancaster, PA, and here is what he had to say when we asked about the origins of these sensational events.

How did Fête En Blanc get started? “This will be its 7 year. It started based on the French party “Fête en Blanc”, a friend wanted to have a spontaneous dinner party with their friends. It’s been going on in France for many years. Here in Lancaster, April Lamon started it as a way to get together with friends and celebrate summer. It has blossomed to a large community event.” th

When asked what inspired the event he says, “Besides getting everyone together for a fun evening. This event is about bringing all of our community together, making new friends, sharing great memories, celebrating summer and overall a fabulous party.”

We know such events are time consuming and require a great deal of teamwork; he described the passion and energy behind the Fête en Blanc committee as one of the most driven groups he’s ever worked with. “I have done non-profit work for years with committees, this is the crème of the crop, everyone’s heart is in it. They want Lancaster to be able to come together and embrace each other with open arms.” How has the community embraced these spontaneous events and who benefits from them? “Well mostly it has been great, people seemed to be very confused about who/ how you were able to come. We have always

wanted a very diverse event and we strive to have anyone attend who can. They just need to sign up on our website and get tickets when they are released. Wear all white, bring your goodies and be ready to dance the night away. Hess continued by saying, “we started giving back to the community last year, as an organization we decided that Children and the Arts will be our main focus.” We now understand the passion behind Fête en Blanc, so why Fête En Noir? “Fête Noir was designed to have a fun party in the winter when everyone is hibernating. It was a fundraiser to help sustain Fête en Blanc. These events do have a price tag that requires sponsorships. We want to give more to the community, and the black party helps us have legs to stand on, which will enable us to successfully produce these events for years to come.”

“Fête en Blanc”, Una Tradición Frances en Lancaster, PA Por Annie Diaz

“Si nunca han asistido a una fiesta de “Fête en Blanc” (Fiesta en Blanco), ¡no tienen idea de lo que se están perdiendo!” Eh tenido el privilegio de haber asistido a este evento en varias ocasiones y recientemente participé de la fiesta inaugural de el “Fête en Noir” (Fiesta en Negro), que tuvo lugar el día 27 de enero de 2018, en la ciudad de Lancaster, PA. El presidente de la junta de “Fête en Blanc”, Joe Hess, residente de Lancaster, tuvo, por su parte, la amabilidad de informarnos acerca de estos eventos sensacionales.

Se le preguntó, ¿Cómo comenzó “Fête en Blanc”? “Hace algunos años atrás, aquí en Lancaster, una amiga quería organizar una fiesta casual con sus amigos. April Lemos, la inició como una forma de reunirse con sus amigos y celebrar el verano. La idea nació retomando la tradición de la fiesta francesa conocida como “Fête en Blanc”. Ahora ha florecido hasta convertirse en un gran evento de la comunidad. Este será el séptimo año que se celebra.” Cuando le preguntamos a nuestro entrevistado cual fue la inspiración de este evento, Hess contestó, “Además de pasar una tarde divertida, este evento tiene como propósito, reunir a toda la comunidad, hacer nuevas amistades, compartir buenos momentos, y celebrar la llegada del verano. Se trata de reunirnos para gozar de una fiesta fabulosa”. Asimismo, sabemos que este tipo de eventos requieren mucho tiempo y de un gran equipo de trabajo; a lo que Hess habló de la pasión y la energía del comité de “Fête en

Blanc”, y lo describe como uno de los grupos más energéticos con los que jamás haya colaborado. “Yo he participado en trabajos sin fines de lucros por años, con diversos comités, pero éste es, definitivamente, la crema y nata de todos. Sus integrantes ponen el corazón en la preparación de este evento. Concluyó diciendo, “¡nuestro interés es que la comunidad de Lancaster se reúna, se acepte y se salude con los brazos abiertos!” ¿Cómo ha respondido la comunidad a este tipo de eventos, y a quién beneficia su realización? “Bueno, principalmente, se trata de una experiencia grandiosa. En ocasiones, la gente parecía confusa acerca de quién podía asistir, y qué se necesitaba hacer para participar en esta celebración. Nuestro evento es para toda nuestra comunidad y buscamos ser diversos, está abierto a todos aquellos que deseen asistir. Solamente necesitan registrarse en nuestra página de internet, y adquirir los boletos de admisión. Lo único que se requiere es que los participantes se vistan de blanco, ¡y estén listos para bailar toda la noche!

Hess continúa diciendo: “El año pasado comenzamos a distribuir los fondos obtenidos a organizaciones en nuestra comunidad. Como organización, decidimos que los programas de niños y las artes serían nuestro foco principal”. Ahora comprendemos la pasión detrás de “Fête en Blanc”. Entonces, ¿por qué “Fête en Noir”? “Fête en Noir” fue una fiesta inventada para el invierno, justo cuando todo mundo se encuentra hibernando. También es ideal para recaudar fondos para poder continuar organizando el evento de “Fête en Blanc”. Estos eventos tienen un precio; requieren de un patrocinador. Queremos dar más a la comunidad. La fiesta en negro nos ayuda a tener el apoyo que necesitamos para mantenernos en pie, y nos permitirá continuar exitosamente estos eventos en el futuro”.

NASA’s Solar System Ambassador Program By Axel Diaz

On December 24, 2015 I received a letter that changed my life. It was from one of NASA’s centers, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) located in Pasadena, California. The letter was confirming that I was accepted to be a Solar System Ambassador for NASA. Since then, I had the opportunity to share my love and passion of space and science in my community.

The Solar System Ambassadors Program (SSA) is a public outreach program designed to work with motivated volunteers across the nation. These volunteers communicate the excitement of NASA's space exploration missions and information about recent discoveries to people in their local communities. The program which started in 1997, currently consists of over 750 ambassadors in 50 states, Washington DC, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands and Guam. Together they conduct approximately 2,400 annual events that, reach about 500,000 people directly, with millions reached via publications, social media, TV and radio. During my two years as an ambassador, I had the opportunity to engage with my community talking different topics such as, our universe, NASA history, the 2017 Solar Eclipse, among others. The Latin American Cultural Center (LACC) in Lancaster, has been a great partner promoting and planning such events. I’ve also, partnered with other local organizations and supported museum events and science fairs. Why is it important that we continue learning about NASA? Because in one way or another, it has an effect in our daily life. It helps us understand where we came from and where we going as humans. For example, since the launch of the Space telescope Hubble in 1990,

scientists have learned more about our solar system. The telescope observes comets and planets. Hubble even discovered moons around Pluto that had not been seen before. The telescope has helped scientists understand how planets and galaxies form. Galaxies contain billions of stars. Hubble has spotted black holes. Black holes suck in everything around them, even the light around them. Hubble has helped scientists learn more about explosions that happen when huge stars burn out. Additionally, did you know that in 1990 a team from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) worked with cameras, small enough, for spacecraft with scientific quality? Today, 1/3 of camera phone contain this technology. However, as a NASA Solar System Ambassador, my biggest goal is to continue promoting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). According to a report from the US News in November 13, 2013 explain: “America has fallen far from its place as a leader in math and science, experts said during a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Diversity Symposium”. Today, its changing, in part thanks to the efforts of NASA, who continues to promote STEM, both in men and women.

Programa “Embajador del Sistema Solar de la Nasa” Por Axel Diaz

El día 24 de diciembre de 2015, recibí una carta que cambió mi vida. El remitente fue de parte uno de los centros de la NASA, el Laboratorio de Propulsión a Chorro (JPL, por sus siglas en inglés), ubicado en Pasadena, California. La carta confirmaba mi aceptación como embajador del Sistema Solar de la Nasa. Desde ese momento, he tenido el privilegio de compartir mi amor y pasión por las ciencias espaciales con mi comunidad.

El Programa Embajador del Sistema Solar de la NASA, es un programa de difusión diseñado para trabajar con voluntarios motivados de toda la nación. La labor de estos embajadores es difundir en sus comunidades la información relativa, y por demás excitante, de la exploración del espacio de la NASA, así como dar atención a nuevos descubrimientos. El programa, cuyos inicios datan de 1997, cuenta actualmente con más de 750 embajadores en los 50 estados, así como en Washington, DC, Puerto Rico, las Islas Vírgenes y Guam. Juntos conducen aproximadamente 2,400 eventos anuales que llegan a cerca de 500 personas directamente, y millones más a través de información transmitida vía publicaciones, medios sociales, televisión y radio. Durante mis dos años como embajador, he tenido la oportunidad de comprometerme con mi comunidad en el sentido de divulgar diferentes temas como por ejemplo: Nuestro Universo; Historia de la NASA; El Eclipse Solar del 2017, entre otros temas. Cabe mencionar que el Centro Latinoamericano de Cultura (Latin American Cultural Center - LACC, por sus siglas en inglés) de Lancaster, ha sido un apoyo importante al promover y planear dichos eventos. Asimismo, he establecido contacto con otras organizaciones locales, con quienes hemos organizados diversos eventos en los museos, así como Ferias Científicas. ¿Por qué es importante aprender acerca de la NASA? Porque, de una manera o de otra, esta institución influye nuestra vida diaria. Nos ha ayudado a comprender de dónde venimos y hacia donde nos dirigimos como seres humanos. Por ejemplo, desde el lanzamiento del telescopio

espacial Hubble, en 1990, los científicos han aprendido más acerca de nuestro sistema solar. El telescopio es capaz de observar cometas y planetas. Hubble incluso descubrió lunas alrededor de Pluto que no se había visto antes. El telescopio ha ayudado a que los científicos comprendan cómo se formaron los planetas y las galaxias. Las galaxias contienen millones de estrellas. Asimismo, Hubble ha detectado agujeros negros (Black Holes). Los agujeros negros succionan todo lo que está a su alrededor, inclusive la luz. Hubble ha ayudado a los científicos a conocer más acerca de las explosiones que suceden cuando grandes estrellas se extinguen. Además, sabes que en 1990 un equipo del Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), de la NASA, trabajó con cámaras lo suficientemente pequeñas, para naves espaciales, con calidad científica. Hoy, una tercera parte de las cámaras de los teléfonos celulares utiliza esta tecnología. Como Embajador del Programa Sistema Solar de la Nasa, mi meta principal es continuar promoviendo la Ciencia, la Tecnología, la Ingeniería, y las Matemáticas (STEM, por sus siglas en inglés). De acuerdo con un reporte, de US News, publicado el 3 de noviembre de 2013: “Estados Unidos ha caído de su nivel como líder en la tecnología y en las áreas de las matemáticas y la ciencia, según expertos durante un simposio de la Diversidad de la Ciencia, Tecnología, Ingeniería y Matemáticas (STEM)”. Hoy, esta situación está cambiando, en parte, gracias a los esfuerzos de la NASA, que continúa promoviendo el STEM, sin hacer distinciones de género.

The Disparities That Exist Within The Pennsylvania Educational System By Angel F. Figueroa, CEO I-LEAD Charter School

Recently PA Governor Tom Wolf introduced a budget that spoke to his agenda, when you dive deep into what he is proposing and pull back the layers, you will be remiss to ask yourself “why is it that the Governor is proposing to increase educational funding substantially?”. The question that one must ask is this, is giving more money to a broken system that continues to fail our kids the answer?

The disparities that exist in Pennsylvania’s educational system pertaining to the inequities of funding is unfathomable. The truth is while the state of Pennsylvania imposes new standardized testing, the system has yet to fully regulate itself. Politicians can talk about test scores, how do schools measure academic growth but until we do not fully address the inequities in education, our youth will continue to be set up for failure. According to Pennsylvania Department of Education, their most recent proposal regarding tuition reimbursement for schools, the inequities are blaringly clear in that your zip code will determine how much funding

your local schools receive per student enrolled. This alone demonstrates the economic disparities that exist within public education in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Allow me to provide you an example of this funding disparity currently in our educational system. Based on zip codes, pupil yearly allocations can vary anywhere from $7,900 to $24,00 per student which is determined where you live. In essence, inner city schools receive less money than their suburban/rural counterparts due to how our state funding formula. Imagine if dollars and cents were a non-issue, the academic competition between all schools would be

equal however this is not our reality. It is imperative for our state legislators to accept the reality that educational disparities exist. Often times while legislators are advocating for their constituents, they are not mindful that educational funding in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is not distributed equally so therefore they should not expect for academic performance to be distributed equally. Funding schools equally is relevant and until every school is funded equally the conversation on academic growth becomes irrelevant and insignificant.
