Larry Hirschfield is a New York City–based real estate developer and affordable housing specialist whose career has been defined by long-term stewardship, neighborhood stabilization, and public-private collaboration. As the Founder of ELH Mgmt. LLC, Larry has spent more than 30 years leading the development, rehabilitation, and management of affordable housing across New York City, helping ensure that vulnerable and working families have access to safe, stable homes. Known for his ability to guide complex projects from acquisition through long-term operation, Larry has built a reputation as a steady, solutions-oriented leader within the city’s affordable housing ecosystem. His work emphasizes durability, accountability, and community impact—values that have guided every stage of his professional life. A Distinct Beginning and a Purpose-Driven Transition Larry’s professional path began outside of real estate, in the performing arts. As a professional percussionist, he performed with the New York City Opera and contributed to major Broadway productions, including Les Misérables. That early career instilled habits of precision, preparation, and collaboration—qualities that later became central to his approach to development and management. In the 1980s, Larry shifted into real estate during a period when many New York City neighborhoods faced significant housing distress. He was drawn to the field by the opportunity to create visible, lasting improvements in the built environment and to help restore housing that communities depended on. Early Hands-On Development Experience From 1987 through 1994, Larry focused on rehabilitating Brooklyn townhouses, gaining hands-on experience in construction, systems upgrades, and building restoration. This work provided a practical foundation in understanding aging housing stock and the challenges associated with deferred maintenance and disinvestment.
