IN MEMORY

Christopher (Chris) Fannin (1962–2025)

The Landscape Between Us

For Chris Fannin, landscape was never background it was the connective tissue of human life. His passing this week leaves a profound void in the global landscape architecture community, particularly across the Middle East, where his influence shaped not only skylines and coastlines, but the very way we think about public space.

Fannin, Senior Principal and Managing Director at InSite, believed the outdoors was not an amenity but a necessity. “I realized early on I was more interested in the spaces between buildings than the buildings themselves,” he once said. That revelation made during his studies at the Rhode Island School of Design—became the compass for a career devoted to creating spaces that bring people together.

Discovering the Ground Plane

Raised in Boston, whose mother was an architectural historian, Fannin grew up surrounded by ideas of place, form, and cultural heritage. Yet it was during his early design education that he found his calling. Landscape architecture, he discovered, was where art met life. “There was an inherent democracy in the ground plane,” he said. “It connects rather than divides.”

That conviction shaped everything he touched, from mega-projects like Hamad International Airport in Qatar to local community improvements under Saudi Arabia’s

Green Riyadh initiative. To him, scale was irrelevant; what mattered was connection. A few trees planted in the right place could transform lives just as powerfully as a billion-dollar master plan.

Championing a Profession’s Coming of Age

Fannin was among the first international landscape leaders to recognize the cultural shift unfolding across the Gulf. “Ten years ago, landscape meant a golf course,” he once remarked. “Today, clients and governments are seeing it as integral to sustainability, cultural identity, and everyday life.”

He delighted in this regional awakening, often recalling how a casual remark by Brad Pitt, when asked what he’d be if not an actor, and answering “a landscape architect,” suddenly made the world pay attention to his profession. Yet for Fannin, advocacy was best done through design, by showing how thoughtful landscapes could change lives.

At HOK and later at InSite, he guided projects that married ecological sensitivity with civic purpose, including the vast Qiddiya Resort Core in Saudi Arabia, where InSite collaborated on the detailed master plan and continues to shape the public realm now rising from the desert. “These projects are transformative,” he said. “They let us explore what the public realm really means in this region.”

Nature and Community: A Shared Vision

As a returning sponsor of the Landscape Middle East Awards and Conference (InSite), Fannin embraced the 2025 theme Nature and Community with characteristic clarity. To him, it wasn’t a slogan; it was a responsibility. “If you grew up in Boston, the UK, or Australia, nature and community were part of your daily rhythm,” he explained. “Here in the Gulf, the relationship with nature has been more observational than immersive; it’s something you look at, not something you live within.”

He spoke often about the need to shift from ornamental to experiential design to make nature not a spectacle but a setting for life. He worried about the region’s fragile ecologies: the loss of mangroves, the pressure on coastlines, the thirst for development that risked erasing the very beauty it sought to celebrate. Yet he was equally optimistic about change. In both Qatar and Saudi Arabia, he pointed to large-scale adoption of treated greywater for irrigation as evidence of real progress toward sustainable cities.

Designing for Belonging

Fannin’s idea of landscape was rooted in human equality. He often recalled his first visit to Abu Dhabi, where he witnessed families from every background gathered along the Corniche on a Saturday night. “There were Range Rovers next to beat-up cars, rich families, working-class families, everyone barbecuing, kids running wild,” he said. “It wasn’t a formal park it was just space. But it was shared.”

That image of spontaneous coexistence, of open ground as the great equalizer, guided his philosophy. “Even material changes signal who a space is for,” he once cautioned. “You walk from concrete to granite, and suddenly you feel watched, or like you don’t belong. That’s not real community space.”

He prioritized simplicity over spectacle, focusing on shade, movement, safety, and places to gather. He found beauty in authenticity, in skateparks and climbing gyms, those self-governing micro-communities where, as he said, “kids learn patience, etiquette, and collaboration.” He understood these places because he lived them; a lifelong skater turned climber, Fannin saw recreation not as leisure but as a metaphor for how people share space and learn respect.

Innovation with Integrity

Though modest about technology, he championed its value when it served purpose. “I’m not a tech guy, but I hate waste,” he laughed. “BIM reduces waste, improves coordination, and gives us better control over execution.” For him, innovation was never novelty for its own sake— it was about consistency, accountability, and better stewardship of resources.

Under his leadership, InSite adopted internal sustainability thresholds for every project, an approach he described as “moving from innovation to responsibility.” He believed in embedding sustainability not as a marketing term but as a professional standard.

Teacher, Mentor, Colleague, Friend

Beyond his professional success, Fannin was known for his generosity as a mentor. He taught at several universities in the U.S. and the U.K., offering candid advice to students and young designers across the region. “Graduating from university isn’t the finish line-it’s the start of your education,” he would tell them. “Find a firm that will teach you, challenge you, and develop you. Don’t chase a job-chase growth.”

He had an unpretentious warmth that made him universally liked. Whether discussing the latest Riyadh project or reminiscing about skating bowls in Dubai Hills, his enthusiasm was infectious. Those who worked with him recall a man of conviction but without ego-an architect of empathy as much as of space.

A Legacy That Lives Between Us

Chris Fannin’s legacy endures in the landscapes he imagined and the people he inspired. His belief that the outdoors is where we belong will continue to guide a generation of designers who see landscape not as decoration, but as the framework of community life.

As we walk through the shaded parks, waterfront promenades, and shared open spaces that bear his influence, we are reminded of his enduring message that the truest measure of design lies not in what it looks like, but in how it makes us feel together.

Landscape Middle East joins the international landscape community in celebrating the life and legacy of Chris Fannin a designer, teacher, and friend whose work continues to connect us all.

The International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA)

The International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) is the global voice of the landscape architecture profession, representing over 80 national associations across Africa, the Americas, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and the Middle East. For more than 75 years, IFLA has championed the creation of sustainable, inclusive, and resilient environments through design, education, and advocacy. A non-political, non-governmental, and non-profit organization, IFLA collaborates with global partners such as the United Nations, UNESCO, and the International Union of Architects (UIA) to address critical environmental and social challenges through landscape solutions.

IFLA Middle East, the newest of IFLA’s five regional chapters, represents 13 member states including Bahrain, Jordan, Iraq, Iran, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, the UAE, and Yemen. Despite being a young region, IFLA ME has rapidly become a key platform for strengthening professional practice, advancing education, and promoting sustainable development throughout the Middle East.

With only a few countries in the region currently offering formal landscape architecture programs, IFLA ME continues to advocate for academic growth and professional recognition. Its initiatives focus on fostering collaboration between regional associations, government entities, and academic institutions to nurture a new generation of landscape architects.

Looking ahead, IFLA ME is committed to celebrating the Middle East’s cultural heritage, unique ecological diversity, and regional identity through programs focused on regenerative landscapes, heritage preservation, food security, and nature-based design. By promoting youth engagement and academic partnerships, the federation seeks to empower local professionals to play a stronger role on the global stage.

Through these efforts, IFLA and IFLA Middle East continue to shape the future of the profession advancing the principles of sustainability, cultural relevance, and environmental stewardship that define landscape architecture worldwide.

The World Green Infrastructure Network (WGIN)

The World Green Infrastructure Network (WGIN) is a global not-for-profit association dedicated to advancing the integration of green infrastructure into urban planning and development worldwide. Founded in 2007 and formally established in 2008, WGIN unites 22 national associations and a diverse international community of professionals, researchers, and advocates working to transform cities through nature-based design.

WGIN’s mission is simple yet urgent: to promote the transition from traditional “grey” infrastructure to a more sustainable, resilient, and biodiverse model one where “vegetation makes it possible.” Through its global network, the organization supports the exchange of research, policy guidance, and best practices, helping nations embed green roofs, living walls, and building-integrated vegetation systems into modern urban environments.

Since 2009, WGIN has hosted ten World Green Infrastructure Congresses, bringing together policymakers, designers, engineers, and environmental leaders to share innovation and accelerate the adoption of green technologies. In 2019, WGIN established its European Chapter to advocate directly with EU policymakers and raise awareness of the economic, social, and ecological benefits of green infrastructure.

Led by an active and diverse Board of Directors representing 11 nations, WGIN fosters collaboration and knowledge exchange through its research committees, global events, and partnerships with organizations such as the European Federation of Green Roof and Wall Associations (EFB) and the EU Environmental Agency.

WGIN is proud to partner with Landscape Middle East Magazine and the Landscape Middle East Awards and Conference 2025 in Abu Dhabi — joining a collective effort to promote sustainable urban transformation and recognize projects that unite community and nature. Together, we share a commitment to building greener, healthier, and more resilient cities that demonstrate the true potential of living infrastructure across the Middle East and beyond.

With an unwavering commitment to excellence, SSLA is shaping a new era of landscape architecture one that reflects the Kingdom’s heritage, embraces innovation, and builds a sustainable future for generations to come.

The Oman Society of Landscape Architects (OSLA)

The Oman Society of Landscape Architects (OSLA) represents a major step forward for the landscape architecture profession in Oman. Officially recognized as a member of the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA), OSLA joins more than 70 nations dedicated to advancing sustainable design, environmental stewardship, and professional collaboration across the globe.

Founded under the leadership of Muneer Hamood Salim Al Senaidi, OSLA was established to create a professional home for landscape architects in Oman—uniting practitioners, educators, and students under a shared vision for excellence. The Society operates under the umbrella of the Oman Design Association (ODA) and is guided by a formal constitution, Articles of Association, and Bylaws that define its mission to promote the value of landscape architecture nationally and internationally.

IFLA recognition marks an important milestone for both OSLA and Oman, providing the country with global representation and access to international expertise, exchange programs, and educational opportunities. It offers a platform for Omani professionals to contribute to global dialogues on sustainability, urban resilience, and cultural landscape preservation—fields in which Oman’s heritage, including its harat, aflaj irrigation systems, and diverse natural environments, offer invaluable insights.

Looking ahead, OSLA will focus on strengthening member engagement, building educational and professional development programs, and hosting workshops and events that connect international knowledge with local practice. The Society also aims to promote Omani landscapes on the world stage, highlighting the nation’s balance of tradition and innovation. Through its growing community and international recognition, OSLA is set to play a defining role in shaping Oman’s sustainable future—bridging culture, ecology, and design to create landscapes that serve both people and the environment.

The Egypt Society of Landscape Architects (ESLA)

The Egypt Society of Landscape Architects (ESLA) marks a significant step in the advancement of landscape architecture in Egypt and the wider Arab world. Formally established following years of collaboration among academics, professionals, and advocates, ESLA serves as the national body representing landscape architects across Egypt, promoting excellence, education, and ethical practice within the field.

Born out of a shared desire to define and strengthen the discipline, ESLA brings together architects, horticulturists, agriculturalists, engineers, and environmentalists who share a passion for sustainable and context-driven design. Its formation followed years of dialogue and public engagement—efforts that began during the COVID-19 pandemic and culminated in close cooperation with IFLA Africa to align its bylaws with both Egyptian law and international standards.

A pivotal milestone in ESLA’s journey was the Arabic translation of the 2016 New Landscape Architecture Declaration, a key document that helped introduce global landscape values to education programs in Arabic-speaking regions. Since then, ESLA has become a platform for thought leadership, professional development, and cultural exchange—bridging academia, industry, and government to shape Egypt’s evolving landscape identity.

ESLA’s mission is multifaceted: to uphold ethical and professional standards, advocate for sustainable and high-quality landscapes, support education and research, and facilitate collaboration between Egypt and the global landscape architecture community. The Society also plays an essential role in developing accredited academic programs and continuing education for practitioners.

In 2025, ESLA is proud to partner with Landscape Middle East Magazine and the Landscape Middle East Awards and Conference in Abu Dhabi, reinforcing its mission to elevate the voice of Egyptian landscape architects on the global stage and celebrate the region’s growing role in shaping resilient, peoplecentered landscapes.

CLIMATE RESILIENT & REGENERATIVE LANDSCAPE

Jubail Island

Entering Company: Lead Development

Landscape Design by: Cracknell

Contractor: GCCLD

Associated Companies:

Parsons – Sitewide Engineering

Broadway Malyan – Master Planning

Genius Loci – Signage and Wayfinding

Gebal – Playground Equipment

Platinum – Sustainability

The Jubail Island development by Jubail Island Investment Company (JIIC) represents a landmark in sustainable, landscape-led design for the Gulf region. Anchored between Abu Dhabi’s urban edge and its treasured mangrove reserves, the project showcases how thoughtful planning can harmonize development with ecology. Through its partnership with Cracknell, JIIC has implemented a nature-based framework that integrates stormwater management, biodiversity enhancement, and climate adaptation at every scale.

A defining innovation is the visible stormwater network—bioswales, dry wadis, and detention ponds that double as aesthetic and educational features. This passive system was successfully proven during the 2024 floods, demonstrating the island’s resilience and foresight in climate planning. Regenerative design principles guide the project’s approach to ecology, with native and droughttolerant planting irrigated entirely through treated sewage effluent (TSE), reducing water demand and promoting soil health.

Beyond its environmental achievements, Jubail Island’s design fosters accessibility and community connection through shaded pedestrian, cycling, and equestrian networks linking homes to open spaces and conservation zones. Its restrained use of local materials and nature-derived forms reinforces identity without excess. The result is a living model for climate-conscious, community-driven development—an exemplar of how landscape can lead sustainable urban transformation in the Middle East.

CLIMATE RESILIENT & REGENERATIVE LANDSCAPE

Musaffah Revitalisation and Development Plan (MRDP)

Entering Company: Prior + Partners

Associated Companies:

Client: Department of Municipalities and Transport

Technical Support Team: Meinhardt / JLL / SILA

The Musaffah Revitalisation and Development Plan (MRDP) by Prior + Partners redefines what urban regeneration can mean for industrial districts in the Middle East. Covering 4,000 hectares of mixed industrial and residential land, the plan transforms one of Abu Dhabi’s most critical economic zones into a climate-resilient, socially inclusive, and environmentally regenerative model for the future.

Anchored in data-led planning, the MRDP uses a systems-based approach to climate adaptation, introducing blue-green corridors, stormwater parks, and a reimagined waterfront that doubles as a civic and ecological edge. These interventions address flood risk, enhance biodiversity, and improve microclimate performance, creating a landscape framework that connects nature and industry seamlessly.

The project’s regenerative design restores degraded sabkha soils, reintroduces native vegetation, and converts unused plots into multifunctional community spaces—resulting in more than 190 hectares of accessible open space where previously there were none. Conceived as a multi-sensory waterfront experience, the design eliminates traditional hard edges, blending urban and natural systems to form safe, inclusive, and climate-resilient environments. Shallow beaches, shaded promenades, fitness zones, and aquatic play areas bring together the principles of Swim, Play, and Unwind, creating a balanced lifestyle destination for residents and visitors alike.

Sustainability is integrated from planning to operation. Native planting, passive cooling, and water-sensitive urban design reduce resource use and enhance biodiversity, while comprehensive EIA measures ensure long-term environmental protection. Socially, barrier-free access, diverse recreational opportunities, and adaptive programming make the lagoon a civic catalyst— fostering health, inclusion, and cultural connection.

Bay Grove stands as a visionary prototype for next-generation coastal urbanism—merging technology, ecology, and human experience to create Dubai’s most forward-looking model of regenerative, accessible, and swimmable waterfront design.

FUTURE WATERSCAPES IN PROGRESS

The Seawater Show Fountain

Jeddah Cove

Entering Company: Oase

Associated Companies:

Developer: Ezdihar

Contractor: Horizons Contracting

Water Feature Contractor: Al Mahroos

The Seawater Show Fountain – Jeddah Cove, designed by Oase, redefines what landmark attractions can be in a region where sustainability and spectacle rarely intersect. This groundbreaking project replaces conventional freshwater systems with seawater, transforming a large-scale entertainment feature into a living demonstration of environmental responsibility.

At its core, the fountain embodies three intertwined principles — resource conservation, technological artistry, and community inclusion. Its use of seawater eliminates freshwater demand entirely, while energy-efficient pumps, LED lighting, and adaptive wind sensors minimize power and water loss. Beyond sustainability, the project is a kinetic artwork—an evolving performance of light, water, and motion choreographed through digital precision and creative storytelling.

Designed as an open civic attraction, the fountain is freely accessible to all, serving as a cultural and social gathering space that celebrates national events and local traditions through programmable visual displays. It enhances Jeddah Cove’s waterfront identity while promoting tourism and community engagement.

By proving that spectacle and sustainability can coexist, the Seawater Show Fountain establishes a new global benchmark for eco-conscious design in the entertainment sector—turning innovation, culture, and environmental care into a single captivating experience.
