Step back in time to a key period in Scotland’s history at the dramatic wilderness setting of Loch Doon Castle, built by the family of Robert the Bruce in the late 1200s. The castle was originally located on an island in the loch but was moved stone by stone to its current location in the 1930s. Set on the banks of Loch Doon, close to the village of Dalmellington, this is an incredible spot to explore Scotland’s past amidst its magnificent natural heritage.

Saved for the nation by the intervention of His Royal Highness King Charles III, Dumfries House is one of Britain’s most beautiful stately homes with an unrivalled collection of original Chippendale furniture.

Visitors can explore this stunning 2,000 acre estate, enjoy a woodland walk or take a guided tour of the house.

For industrial heritage, the magnificent Barony A Frame, near Auchinleck is an outdoor monument celebrating the mining past of the region with spoken stories from some of the men who worked there. It is the last remaining example of its type in Britain, and was restored in 2007 by the Barony A Frame Trust.

The Dick Institute in Kilmarnock is one of the most important cultural venues in the south-west of Scotland, featuring the largest museum and galleries space in Ayrshire It has a programme of nationally important exhibitions, permanent displays of the museum’s own diverse collections and innovative work by contemporary artists, film makers and young people from the area.

Widely considered as Scotland’s national poet, Ayrshire’s Robert Burns lived in Mauchline between 1784 and 1788, years widely regarded as being his most creative and productive period. Burns’ home is now the Burns House Museum. Why not have a wander around the village and find some of Burns’ old haunts!

Blackstone Clydesdales is a working family stock farm with a small select breeding herd of prize winning Clydesdale Heavy Horses and Champion Highland Cows. Other farm pets include alpacas, micro boars, sheep, hens, geese, ducks, peacock, peahens, dogs and Bubbles the donkey.

Dean Castle Country Park offers over 200 acres of parkland to explore using scenic paths and trails - each season brings with it ever changing plants and wildlife to see along the way. Explore the recently renovated 14th-century Castle which houses world-class collections and find out more about its rich and bloody history!

Right in the heart of rural Ayrshire lies this community run charity ski slope. You can book lessons or have a few practise runs if you are more experienced. There is also a dedicated tubing slope.

Castles Large and Small

There are some superb castles here. The medieval stronghold of Caerlaverock, surrounded by a moat, stood guard over the Solway Firth for more than 400 years. Also protected by water is the enchanting Castle Threave, once a stronghold of Archibald the Grim. It is situated on an island in the middle of the River Dee and is reached by boat.

MacLellan’s Castle in the heart of Kirkcudbright is the impressive residence of a powerful local family. Look out for the laird’s lug, a spy hole in the great hall through which the lord could eavesdrop on his guests!

Just to the south of Glasgow on a bend in the Clyde is Bothwell, the largest and finest 13th century castle in Scotland. Equally fine is the superb Brodick Castle on Arran with its entrancing gardens. The small castle of Portencross sits on a rocky point near West Kilbride – almost as close to the sea as it would be possible to build. On the north-west corner of Arran, also close to the shore, is the particularly fine Lochranza Castle. Parts of it are thought to date from the early 1300s.

Rock Art & Stone Circles

A hotspot for prehistoric rock carvings, Dumfries and Galloway has many stones carved with strange cup and ring markings. A good local site for cup and ring marked rocks is at Dumtroddan just to the east of Port William. You’ll find almost identical Bronze Age carvings in England, France, Spain and even Italy.

The west coast of Arran is the place to go for some of Scotland’s most outstanding stone circles. The 4000 year old Auchagallon Cairn is surrounded by an almost complete circle of 15 standing stones. Even more impressive is the nearby Machrie Moor, an even earlier site with several stone circles. When excavated recently, it was found that there had previously been substantial timber circles here.

Burns Country

If you want to get to know Robert Burns, Scotland’s national poet, Alloway is the place to go. Here you’ll discover the cottage where he was born, the Burns Birthplace Museum - housing the most important Burns collection in the world and the Burns House Museum - the house where Burns lived with Jean Armour in the town of Mauchline. Closely associated with Burns and his poetry are the nearby Auld Kirk and Brig o’ Doon. Also well worth visiting is the handsome Burns Monument and gardens.

Stately Homes

Only recently opened to the public is one of Britain’s most beautiful, yet most hidden, stately homes –Dumfries House. Designed by Robert Adam for the Earl of Dumfries, the house and its furniture are little changed from when it was built between 1754 and 1759.

Better known, but equally impressive, is the Earl of Cassillis’s clifftop mansion of Culzean Castle, also designed by Robert Adam, and completed in about 1793.

Ancient Abbeys and Yorkshire Monks

Built by monks some 800 years ago, Glenluce, Sweetheart and Dundrennan abbeys are wonderful places to visit. They would originally all have had an abbey church, cloisters, vaulted chapter house, refectory, dormitory and a warming room – the only room with a fire! You can still see some of these elements today.

Glenluce, tucked into a tranquil valley near Stranraer, is one of Scotland’s best-preserved monasteries. A highlight is the magnificent chapter house, with its ornate windows and grotesque carvings. Sweetheart Abbey, just south of Dumfries, was named for its founder, Lady Devorgilla, who was buried here with the embalmed heart of her beloved husband, John Balliol. You can see the stone effigy of Lady Devorgilla cradling her husband’s heart.

Peaceful Dundrennan Abbey was, for some 400 years, the home of a community of Cistercian monks. The original monks came from Rievaulx Abbey in North Yorkshire. The abbey has a particularly fine chapter house where you’ll find the effigy of a murdered abbot with a dagger at his heart and a slaughtered assailant at his feet. Mary Queen of Scotland spent her last hours in Scotland here after the disastrous Battle of Langside in 1568.

Whithorn is rich in the archaeology and history of over 2500 years : you can visit our full scale reconstruction Iron Age roundhouse, based on nearby excavations, and learn about Iron Age life, then trace the arrival of Christianity in about 450 AD. You can walk part of the pilgrimage route, used by thousands of pilgrims, visiting the shrine of St Ninian, including monarchs of Scotland, from Robert the Bruce to Mary Queen of Scots. At the Whithorn Trust visitor centre, see the story of early Scotland unfold, and visit the earliest Christian monuments in Scotland!

Known as Scotland’s most exotic garden, Logan Botanic Garden is located near Stranraer on the south-western tip of Scotland. Warmed by the Gulf Stream, the Garden enjoys an almost subtropical climate, enabling plants from Australia, New Zealand, South and Central America and Southern Africa to thrive outdoors.

The long driveway to the Garden’s entrance is lined with magnificent Cordyline palms, the first sign that visitors will soon be entering a gardener’s paradise.

In the South Woodland, striking plantings of palms and tree ferns from Australia and New Zealand give the sense of walking through an antipodean forest. Make sure you visit the Tasmanian Creek, with its dense planting of eucalyptus and new four metre high Dicksonia antarctica tree ferns – recently transplanted from the Edinburgh Glasshouses.

Other highlights in the Garden include plants from Chile such as the colourful Fasciculara bicolor, a member of the pineapple family, and the beautiful Argentinian shrub Polylepsis australis, with its distinctive flaking, reddish-brown papery bark.

Also unmissable is the giant, rhubarb-like Gunnera manicata, a native of south-east Brazil. In spring, the plant develops large cone-shaped flower spikes covered in thousands of tiny greenish flowers. This is followed by the growth of an enormous canopy of barbed leaves up to 2.5 metres across, raised on stalks up to three metres high. In summer, the Gunnera Bog becomes a virtually impenetrable forest with around 50 different species of Gunnera.

Other highlights include the Walled Garden, a showcase for exotic plants and the Victorian-style Logan Conservatory. This elegant glasshouse is home to a range of particularly tender plants from South Africa.

The beautiful Glenwhan Gardens is situated high above Luce Bay looking out to the Mull of Galloway and the Isle of Man. This beautiful and peaceful garden is filled with plants from around the Southern Hemisphere benefitting from the mild area due to the Gulf Stream. A Tearoom with sumptuous cakes and savouries is popular with a small plant nursery nearby. 20 acres of Moorland Walk is adjacent to the Gardens, together with a designated Tree Trail.

Over by Garlieston is the historic Galloway House Gardens, dating back to 1740, they are set in over 50 acres of designed parkland and complement the beauty of the natural landscape.

BEST LOCAL WALKS

Mull of Galloway

Explore the southernmost tip of Scotland. The Mull of Galloway has a splendid lighthouse, bustling seabird colonies, dramatic cliff scenery and stunning views. This walk explores the coast on both sides of the peninsula with a shorter option also possible.

Goatfell, Arran

A fine pyramidal peak and a magnificent viewpoint, Goatfell is the highest of the mountains on Arran and a great place to see dramatic granite ridges. This approach from Brodick Castle is the most popular and straightforward route.

Distance: 10.5km / 6.5 miles

Time: 4.5 - 6 hours

The Greenock Cut

This classic circuit climbs over moorland, dotted with reservoirs, before heading along the Greenock Cut - a historic aqueduct which once kept the industries of Greenock supplied with water. The route gives stunning views over the Clyde estuary towards the Highlands.

The Merrick

Discover the highest summit in Southern Scotland right at the heart of the Galloway hills. Heading up the Merrick from Loch Trool is the easiest route and is rewarded with a panorama including much of the Galloway Forest as well as across to Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man.

Distance: 13.25km / 8.25 miles

Balcary Bay and Rascarrel

A Galloway coastal classic, this walk heads along the dramatic clifftops and the shoreline between Balcary Point and Rascarrel. It is deservedly popular and makes a great family outing.

Criffel

Criffel may be only 569 metres high, but as the highest hill for miles around it the Solway coastline. The ascent is short but steep and rewarded with stunning views over the water with the mountains of the English Lake District visible on a clear day.

Born out of the island’s heritage of the illicit production of ‘Arran Waters’ Lagg is a single malt distillery producing a heavily peated style of whisky. A trip to the beautiful Isle of Arran is a must, discover the craft community here which use locally foraged and sourced materials in their work. Examples include using wild flowers and plants to dye wools and felts, or using some of the Shiskine alpaca or sheep wool to spin, and then knit into fine scarves or tunics. Another example may be using driftwood or seaglass from the beaches to create sculptures and pictures. You’ll have no problem finding the perfect gift to take home!

Crawick Multiverse, inspired by the universe, is the result of a major landscape restoration project which transformed a former opencast coal mine into a remarkable place of natural and cosmic beauty.

As well as all of this, South West Scotland has many golf courses, ranging from a major championship course to family friendly 9 hole venues.

On the coast is the scenic Ailsa course at Turnberry, with its lighthouse and great views. Equally famous is Royal Troon, with its ‘Postage Stamp’ 8th hole - the shortest on the Open circuit. Or try Rowallan golf course, set in the grounds of two castles and designed by professional golfer Colin Montgomerie.

There are dozens of hidden treasures away from the busy fairways of the coast. Among these are Ballochmyle, Loudoun and Brunston Castle. Annanhill, close to Kilmarnock, is a delightful parkland course with wide tree-lined fairways. The Isles of Arran and Great Cumbrae have some superb courses too.

Scotland’s festival calendar is absolutely packed, and whether you’re into traditional Highland sports, local culture, or sampling a dram (or three), there’s something for everyone.

Highland games are the big crowd-pullers, think caber tossing, pipe bands, tug-of-war, and dancers in tartan all set against some of the most scenic backdrops you can imagine. Scotland’s Highland Games offer a truly panScottish celebration, with over 60 events spread across the country, from the rugged Highlands to the Lowland towns, each region hosts its own gathering.

Whether it’s the iconic Braemar Gathering in Royal Deeside, historic games on the shores of Loch Ness in Glenurquhart, the unique ‘Lump’ venue of the Isle of Skye Games, spirited gatherings in towns like Aberdeen, Bowhill, Inveraray, or St Andrews, the tradition pulses through every corner of the country.
