Broch Country

The North East Highlands is the best place for brochs - extraordinary 2000 year old circular drystone towers. Unique to Scotland, they occur nowhere else in Europe. Brochs were built for defence with just one narrow entrance and no windows. Up to 13 metres high, they had massively thick tapered walls with internal galleries and stairs. Some brochs to visit are Carn Liath, just off the A9 to the north of Golspie, and Dun Dornaigil with its high wall, near Altnaharra.

Cliff Top Castles

Standing on windswept rocky promontories are the ancient Viking castle of Old Wick, and stunning Castle Girnigoe. Just back from the sea is Dunrobin Castle, the home of the Earls and Dukes of Sutherland. It was remodelled and greatly enlarged in the 1840s to look like a French chateau. Also impressive is the Castle of Mey, the sheltered Caithness retreat of the late Queen Mother.

Wild Boar, Wolves and Vellum

Beautifully carved stones with bears, wolves, salmon, mythical beasts and other Pictish symbols can be found throughout the north east Highlands - a stronghold of the Picts between about 300 and 900AD. Later, after the Picts converted to Christianity in about 600AD, they started to erect exquisite, tall, cross-slabs with intricate designs. An amazing recent discovery was the Pictish monastery at Portmahomack. It flourished between about 700 and 800AD when it may have been burnt by Viking invaders. Excavations have shown that vellum for manuscripts was made here from calf skins.

Lighthouses – Tallest and Furthest

Tallest and furthest, the lighthouses of the Northern Highlands are some of the most varied in Britain. The 41m high red banded lighthouse on the low lying headland of Tarbat Ness was completed in 1830. Seriously impressive, it is the tallest in Scotland. Perhaps the most exciting lighthouse to visit is Cape Wrath, built in 1828, with its Ozone Café. To reach it you need to take a ferry across the Kyle of Durness followed by a 30 minute minibus ride along a very rough road.

Ann’s Cottage at Dunnet

The Cottage lies on a small croft overlooking Dunnet Bay, worked by the same family over three generations. Built around 1850 the Cottage has remained largely unchanged over the years and visitors can step back in time and imagine what it would be like to live in a room with a wee box bed, heated by a peat fire, where Mary Ann and her husband spent their non-working hours, cooked and slept. In the adjoining outbuildings there are implements and evidence of farming practices from earlier times.

Started by Baron Schroder in the late 19th century, hill paths meander through 20 acres of conifers and rhododendrons.

Totally transformed after the 1980 storms by Nicky Macpherson, it is now a painter’s garden, designed to frame the magnificent views of Skye and the surrounding hills. Waterfalls, Monet bridges, meconopsis, bamboo and candelabra primula are reflected in dark pools. Children enjoy searching for sculpture in unexpected places.

Dunrobin CASTLE

The most northerly of Scotland’s great houses. It is the largest house in the highlands, with 189 rooms and is one of Britain’s oldest continuously inhabited houses, dating in part from the early 1300s.

The Gardens

The Gardens were laid out in 1850 by the architect Sir Charles Barry, who was responsible for the Victorian extension to the Castle and who designed the Houses of Parliament. The arrangement of the Gardens, inspired by those at Versailles, have changed little in the 150 years since they were planted. Despite its location so far north, the sheltered Gardens are able to support a surprising range of plants.

The Museum - Open 10.30am to 4pm

Built by William, Earl of Sutherland as a Summer House and extended by the 3rd Duke, the Museum houses a collection of hunting trophies and other items brought from all over the world, together with many objects of interest presented to the Museum by friends of the Sutherland family.

Hidden at the back of one of Torridon’s most impressive mountains, Beinn Eighe, is this amazing corrie - a bowl carved by a glacier. Climb through the rugged landscape on a good path to view the towers of the Triple Buttress reflected in a high mountain loch.

Coire Làir & Easan Dorcha

Follow this remote circuit through rugged mountain splendour to discover a stunning waterfall amidst ancient Scots Pine trees. A traditional walkers’ bothy makes a perfect lunch spot on this scenic day walk. Take binoculars to spot red deer and golden eagles.

Time: 5 – 7 hours

Ben Bhraggie

The climb up from Golspie is rewarded by fantastic views of Scotland’s east coast. Visit the huge monument to the notorious Duke of Sutherland, known locally as The Mannie, before gentle forest tracks lead to the dramatic Big Burn gorge.

Ben Wyvis

A popular and relatively easy Munro (Scottish mountain over 3000ft), Ben Wyvis lies just north of the Highland capital, Inverness. If you’ve got the hillwalking gear, head for the summit for fantastic views and join those bagging all 282 Munros – just be warned it’s an addictive hobby!

Faraid Head

One of the most beautiful coastal walks on the whole of the NC500, this route takes in quiet sandy beaches, dunes and cliffs. With views to remote Cape Wrath, seabirds and seals are more likely to be your companions on this quiet route.

Stac Pollaidh

The sandstone towers of Stac Pollaidh (often anglicised to Stac Polly) rise dramatically above the surrounding lochs and heather. The whole walk has great views over Assynt, the Summer Isles and Achiltibuie. Take the optional detour to the ridge for a bird’s eye view.

Whisky lover or total newbie –everyone should visit a whisky distillery at least once for a genuine centuries old experience. The North of Scotland has plenty of famous Malt Whisky distilleries ready to welcome you and share their secrets.

Nestled beneath the Ben Wyvis Mountain, GlenWyvis is the first 100% community-owned distillery, pioneering sustainable distilling: wind, hydro, solar and biomass energy all powering their operations.

Further north in Wick, Old Pulteney, established in 1826, is well known for its ‘Maritime Malt’. In Thurso you’ll discover the most northerly distillery on the British mainland, Wolfburn Distillery was closed for over 150 years before being brought back to life and reopened in 2013.

Nearby, with picturesque views of Crosskirk Bay, North Point Distillery offers not just whisky, but also rum and gin too! There is something for everyone at this awardwinning distillery.

For gin lovers, the popular Rock Rose Gin has its home at Dunnet Bay Distillery, located in the spectacular bay of Dunnet. Each bottle is filled, hand-waxed, batch numbered and signed before it leaves the distillery. Fantastic tasting tours are available.

Across the Pentland Firth, fertile Orkney has two celebrated distilleries: Highland Park and Scapa. Visit the remote Scapa Distillery situated on the shores of the Scapa Flow. Every guest attending the tours receives a dram of Scapa. We suggest you book ahead, as the tours fill up quickly.

Most distilleries have excellent shops where you can buy a range of their single malts of varying ages, many of them unobtainable elsewhere. Some distilleries even bottle rare single cask whiskies.

For craft beer, Black Isle Brewing Co and Cromarty Brewing Co are both great local options, and both have a brewery shop that you can visit to pick up some of their beers.

The Northern Highlands is a fantastic place, and wherever you are, there are activities and adventures to be found, nearby attractions to be discovered, and fun for the whole family across some of Scotland’s most picturesque landscapes.

There are countless stories and legends from the Highlands for you to uncover, but why not try Liquid Footprint’s Pirates and Merfolk package, offering the whole family the chance to lose themselves in their own exciting story.

The History Links Museum in Dornoch is well worth a visit, and children can dress up as Vikings and have their photographs taken while they look fearsome.

Searching for sea glass is an enjoyable activity, it’s good exercise and all the family can join in. It’s like a treasure hunt that can be enjoyed around the beautiful coastlines. Find out how you can get involved from Bronagh Braidwood, owner of The Highland Haven in Caithness.

Or maybe try your hand at milking a cow! The Animal Centre, at the Castle of Mey, offers the perfect introduction in the form of Daisy, the wooden cow – used by both adults and children alike. Younger visitors can help to bottle feed the lambs and even get hands on with other furry friends. A wonderfully educational and enjoyable day out.

You could even join the first farm tour of its kind in the north of Scotland with Farm Buggy Tours at Kirkton Farm in Melvich, Caithness. Enjoy some fun off road in a fourwheel-drive buggy – see sheep and Highland cows up close, and maybe some deer and other wildlife.

If you like wildlife, RSPB has several reserves in the area that are teeming with wildlife and fun for all the family.

Or maybe you are a keen angler, or want to give it a try, or even get the kids interested in fishing. The Northern Highlands is a beautiful location to try your hand with a rod. Here you’ll find some of the best lochs and rivers for trout and salmon fishing in the country, as well as fantastic sea fishing. Remember to book your permit!

How about a guided day in the Sutherland area with an experienced fly-fishing guide such as James Curley Fly Fishing. Family groups are most welcome, in fact James believes that the sooner children start fishing the better! Your experience can be as adventurous or relaxing as you’d like to make it.

The Northern Highlands also has fantastic mountain bike trails for all levels. Visit the Learnie Red Rocks to enjoy the exhilarating man-made trails - great for all levels of mountain bikers.

Finally, the Northern Highlands boasts remote Mediterranean style beaches that you simply must visit. Fly a kite, build sandcastles, explore the rockpools or discover Europe’s smallest castle ‘Hermit Castle’ at Achmelvich Beach. Grab your welly boots, bucket and net and set forth to the beach!

Visiting Wolfburn is easiest by car, but if you’re using public transport, the distillery is about 1km from Thurso railway station, with a bus stop just 200m away. If driving, head west out of Thurso on the A9, then follow the A836 for roughly 1km, and look out for the brown tourist sign directing you to the distillery.
