Spectacular Castles

There is a great choice of castles here, from cliff top ruins to spectacular reconstructions. At the north end of Skye, the Macleod stronghold of Dunvegan is the oldest. It has been continuously inhabited by the Macleods for over 800 years, and has been adapted and extended many times, including a romantic, exterior restoration between 1840 and 1850. On an island in Loch Duich, Eilean Donan has to be one of Scotland’s most picturesque castles. There have been castles of varying sizes here since the 13th century. In 1719 when the castle was garrisoned by 46 Spanish soldiers, it was attacked by a government force of three frigates, taken, and blown up. It remained a ruin for over 200 years and was only reconstructed in the early 20th century.

At the south end of Skye is the well-known castle of Armadale, the seat of the Macdonalds. Built in the early 1800s it was lived in for only just over 100 years. Today the main part of the building is a dramatic ruin, while nearby, telling the story of Clan Donald, is the excellent Museum of the Isles.

DID you know?

Skye was originally settled by Gaelicspeaking Scots from Ireland before being ruled by Norsemen between the 9th and 12th century.

Broch Country

Skye and Lochalsh is one of the best places to discover brochs – extraordinary 2000 year old circular drystone towers. Unique to Scotland they occur nowhere else in the world. Brochs were built for defence with just one narrow entrance and no windows. Up to 13 metres high they have a massively thick tapered wall with internal galleries and stairs.

Some brochs to visit on Skye are Dun Beag, Dun Ardtrek and Dun Fiadhar. To get a really good idea of what an almost complete broch would have looked like take the ferry across to Glenelg. There you’ll discover two outstanding brochs, Dun Telve and Dun Troddan.

Historic Ferry

Turn the clock back and cross over the sea to Skye on the historic Glenelg Ferry. This is the only manually operated turntable ferry in the World. These ferries were once a familiar sight up and down the west coast. Before the ferry, this narrow channel at Kylerhea was once the traditional crossing point for cattle on their way to the markets in the south, tied nose to tail and made to swim across the narrows behind a small boat.

German Connection

At Inverarish on the south end of the Isle of Raasay you can still see traces of an iron ore mine. A substantial operation with a railway, crusher, firing kiln and pier, it operated during the First World War. From 1916 it relied on the labour of some 260 German prisoners of war. Two of them died on the island, one from a roof fall in the mine and one from other causes.

Basking Shark Factory

Skye once had Britain’s only ‘shark factory’, established in 1946 on the Isle of Soay by the well-known author Gavin Maxwell. You can still see the building where the basking sharks were brought ashore and oil processed from their livers. A large shark could have a liver weighing up to a tonne, this would yield between 200 and 400 gallons of oil. This venture was never viable and closed after 3 years: Maxwell went on to become a well-known author and naturalist.

Started by Baron Schroder in the late 19th century, hill paths meander through 20 acres of conifers and rhododendrons.

Totally transformed after the 1980 storms by Nicky Macpherson, it is now a painter’s garden, designed to frame the magnificent views of Skye and the surrounding hills. Waterfalls, Monet bridges, meconopsis, bamboo and candelabra primula are reflected in dark pools. Children enjoy searching for sculpture in unexpected places.

Old Man of Storr

This deservedly popular walk climbs up for a close look at the massive pinnacle of the Old Man of Storr - one of Scotland’s most iconic places. You’ll find that the famous Old Man is actually just one amidst a host of remarkable rock formations on the Isle of Skye.

Fairy Pools and Coire na Creiche

Explore these popular crystal-clear pools that cascade down a series of falls below the imposing and rugged Cuillin mountains. You can escape the crowds at the pools themselves by following this longer circular with a remote feel and stunning views of the surrounding peaks.

Quiraing

A truly iconic location on the Isle of Skye. Most walkers don’t venture beyond the rock features known as the Prison and Needle but this circular climbs to the summit above the Quiraing for stunning vistas of the pinnacles and coast.

Bruach na Frithe

The Cuillin mountains on Skye offer an Alpine experience where steep paths, rocky terrain and a head for heights are rewarded with breath-taking views and life-long memories. Bruach na Frithe is one of the easier Cuillin peaks but is still a very challenging day out; hillwalking here is more serious than on the mainland - be prepared.

Falls of Glomach

Though not the highest, the Falls of Glomach are reputedly the most magnificent waterfalls in all Britain, with a single drop of 113 metres (370 feet). This substantial walk is the easiest and shortest way to visit this incredible cascade.

Ardintoul Circuit

Take the Glenelg Ferry from Skye or drive the dramatic Mam Ratagan pass in Kintail to reach the start of this idyllic circular walk. A little visited section shoreline of Loch Alsh offers great views and wildlife before forestry tracks lead back over the hill.

If you’re looking for a boat trip offering stunning scenery and wildlife spotting opportunities, you’ll be spoiled for choice in Skye and Lochalsh.

Between April and October sail over the sea to Skye on the last surviving manually operated turntable ferry in the world. The short crossing from Glenelg is an experience not to be missed. The ferry features in the 2008 movie ‘Made of Honor’ starring Patrick Dempsey.

The Isle of Skye and Lochalsh are great places to spot both common and grey seals. The best way to get close to them is with an expert guide. Calum’s Seal Trips depart regularly from Plockton ‘the jewel of the Highlands’. Calum is so confident you’ll see seals on his tours, that you won’t have to pay if you don’t.

Puffins are a seasonal favourite with visitors to Skye and Lochalsh. Between May and July, SkyeXplorer offers 90 minute boat trips departing from Uig. Puffins are guaranteed on these tours, and if you’re lucky white tailed sea eagles and marine life too.

The Ascrib islands are a Special Area of Conservation and home to both common and grey seal colonies which can be seen throughout the year. The puffins spend the winter at sea and come to the Ascribs during April to breed. They are abundant during this season and leave the area in early August. Minke whales visit Skye from June to early September and have favourite feeding grounds where we can see them. The Isle of Skye and the wider Lochalsh area have a long-standing reputation for producing spirits and brews that are every bit as dramatic as the landscapes around them.

One of the newest and most exciting names on the island is Torabhaig Distillery, located on the Sleat peninsula. It’s only the second licensed single-malt whisky distillery ever built on Skye, and it manages to blend modern whisky-making with the charm of a beautifully restored 19thcentury farm steading. Torabhaig is known for its distinctly peated whisky—an earthy, smoky style that fits right into Skye’s whisky heritage. Visitors can wander through the old stone buildings, learn about the distillation process, and, of course, enjoy a taste (or two) of their growing range of bottlings.

Just up the road—at least in the Highland sense of “up the road”—you’ll find the much older and more famous Talisker Distillery in Carbost. As the oldest working distillery on Skye, Talisker has long been associated with the island’s maritime character. Their whiskies tend to be bold, peppery, and slightly briny, as if the sea itself had a hand in shaping the flavor. The visitor centre stays busy for a reason: the tours are engaging, the setting is gorgeous, and that first sip of Talisker with Loch Harport shimmering outside is hard to beat.

Over in Lochalsh, on the mainland side of the Skye Bridge, you’ll find a handful of craft producers helping round out the area’s offerings. Small breweries and independent makers often showcase local ingredients or Highland twists on classic styles, making the region a fun place to sample a variety of drinks beyond whisky. The community around Kyle and Plockton also tends to support local producers, so you’ll find Skye and Lochalsh-made beers and spirits in many pubs and restaurants.

All in all, whether you’re chasing smoky single malts, smooth drams with coastal flair, or a pint brewed with Highland heart, the Isle of Skye and Lochalsh have plenty to offer. Famed for its breath-taking scenery and stunning wildlife, the Isle of Skye is also home to some excellent restaurants.

Wherever you are in Skye and Lochalsh you’ll find a place that serves the freshest of fish, mussels, lobsters and langoustines. Scallops and oysters are on many menus as are local venison and lamb.

Located near the foot of the Red Cuillin Hills in Broadford on the Isle of Skye is Cafesia. Specialising in delicious wood-fired dishes including pizzas. Using only local produce such as venison, beef, pork and lamb, as well as edible flowers, foraged mushrooms and herbs are incorporated into dishes when they are in season.

As well as the Italian wood-fired oven, around the corner is Siaway who offer quality fish and chips as well as lots of other fresh yummy meals you’d expect from a great local chippy!

For a more sophisticated meal head over to the 2 AA Rosette Restaurant at Duisdale House Hotel. The inner dining room has a beautiful open fireplace and the south facing conservatory overlooking the gardens. The food is of a Scottish contemporary style using the best of produce available and in season.

Their sister hotel Skeabost, overlooking Loch Snizort, serves the best of Island cuisine, freshly made using only the finest locally sourced ingredients. After dinner, watch the sunset over the loch, or relax and unwind by the fire with a local malt from the cocktail bar.

The Birlinn Restaurant at Eilean Iarmain has an idyllic waterfront setting with views of the hills and sea. Enjoy a la carte dining with a wide selection of local seafood and game complemented by wine from their extensive wine list. The menus reflect the abundance of fresh local produce, venison from the Estate and langoustines landed at the old stone pier. For a more informal atmosphere there are lunches and dinners served in the comfort of the Praban Bar with its open log fire.

There is even a Michelin-starred restaurant on the island. Set in the village of Stein, the restaurant describes its food as contemporary Scottish with a French twist.

Over in Portree, you’ll find some of the best of Skye’s seafood with plates piled high with langoustines, mussels and oysters. Overlooking Portree and the bay, it’s a must place to visit during your stay on the island. They also have options for meat lovers and veggies too.

You can watch potters as they work on stoneware, visit an artist’s studio to admire a portfolio of watercolours, or pop into a photography gallery showcasing compositions that capture the island’s unique palette.

There are two main potteries on the Isle of Skye. One is Uig Pottery, you can watch stoneware potters at work and see the finished masterpieces in the studio. The other is Edinbane Pottery who offer a more modern take on pottery; perfect if you prefer pieces that are a little more contemporary and possessing more functional features than traditional ones.

For sheepskin, Skyeskyns in Waternish is your best bet. Makers and suppliers of luxurious sheepskins, home accessories and sustainablymade clothing. You can even take a free tour of their tannery.

The best way to see as much of the island as possible is by car; even the more remote attractions such as Talisker Waterfall become accessible. Brush up on your ‘passing place’ etiquette for a hassle-free day out.

Many places, such as Neist Point and Mealt Falls have large free car parks while others at the Fairy Ring or Quiraing do charge. Remember that digital coverage on the island maybe intermittent with implications for parking apps and map reading!

Car hire

A wide range of makes, models and size of vehicles are available to hire on the island, from small economy cars to minibuses and motorhomes. These can be collected or delivered to drop off points including Kyle Station or the Calmac ferry terminals. One way car hire is also available.

Ferries

You can cross over to Skye by the Calmac Ferry from Mallaig to Armadale or take the historic ferry from Glenelg to Skye on Scotland’s last manually operated turntable ferry. For decades, the ferry has carried vehicles and passengers over the Kylerhea straits in all weathers. Calmac also operate the Sconser to Isle of Raasay ferry.

Buses & Taxis

Taking a bus tour is probably the easiest, most relaxed way to travel around Skye & Lochalsh for visitors of any age or ability. In the capable hands of knowledgeable guides, you’ll see the best of the island’s scenery and wildlife: photo stops included!

Tours can be half day or full day trips and will take in sights such as the Fairy Pools, the Quiraing, Old Man of Storr and the Neist Point Lighthouse. Alternatively, some companies will offer bespoke tours, allowing you to set your own agenda. Transfer and pick up services can also be provided.

Bike hire

There are lots of options for bike hire on the island from traditional road bikes to mountain bikes or even e-biking around the Trotternish Peninsula. Fully serviced and prepped bikes can be collected from store or delivered to your accommodation, bike racks can also be provided.

Walking

For a more active look at Skye & Lochalsh, without the worry of planning, walking tours are available year-round from several companies. Guides will be professionally qualified and prepared for any conditions the Scottish climate can produce. Pick up and drop off services are usually available.

You could climb a Munro, traverse a ridge, gorge walk, coasteer or even climb a sea cliff. Trails can take you past stunning waterfalls or through the remote and magnificent scenery of Kintail. Or, why not take in one of the superb beaches or bays at Talisker, Camasunary or the Coral Beach north of Dunvegan? In the southern tip of the island you can venture to the Point of Sleat with fantastic views over to Rum, Canna and Eigg.

1. LEITIR FURA AND KINLOCH FOREST

A low-level walk through woodland to an abandoned 18thC township, with superb views across the Sound of Sleat to the mainland

2. COILLE DALAVIL

Follow the rough track down to the loch with old beech trees and native woodland. With a good map and several hours, you can reach the sea and find the cleared village of Carradale, with a fantastic outlook over the sea to the Cuillins.

3. ARMADALE HILL AND WOODLAND

A pleasant woodland walk to Armadale hill viewpoint. Access to Armadale Castle gardens via the main entrance.

4. TORMORE

The community-owned forest of Tormore has several miles of forest roads and a cleared fank or sheep-pen area with footpaths, a seat and views over the west coast of Scotland

5. POINT OF SLEAT

A walk to the southernmost point of Skye. Good spot for seeing marine mammals and views to the islands of Eigg and Rum. A delightful detour to a lovely sandy beach at Camas Daraich is recommended.

Across the Skye Bridge at the head of Loch Carron, is Attadale one of the most beautiful west coast gardens, or rather a series of gardens. Dunrobin CASTLE

The most northerly of Scotland’s great houses. It is the largest house in the highlands, with 189 rooms and is one of Britain’s oldest continuously inhabited houses, dating in part from the early 1300s

The Gardens

The Gardens were laid out in 1850 by the architect Sir Charles Barry, who was responsible for the Victorian extension to the Castle and who designed the Houses of Parliament. The arrangement of the Gardens, inspired by those at Versailles, have changed little in the 150 years since they were planted. Despite its location so far north, the sheltered Gardens are able to support a surprising range of plants.

The Museum - Open 10.30am to 4pm Built by William, Earl of Sutherland as a Summer House and extended by the 3rd Duke, the Museum houses a collection of hunting trophies and other items brought from all over the world, together with many objects of interest presented to the Museum by friends of the Sutherland family.

Fort William to Mallaig Return

From 1st April until Friday 23rd October 2026

Described as the greatest railway journey in the world, this 84 mile round trip takes you past a list of impressive extremes. Starting near the highest mountain in Britain, Ben Nevis, it visits Britain’s most westerly mainland railway station, Arisaig; passes close by the deepest freshwater loch in Britain, Loch Morar and the shortest river in Britain, River Morar, finally arriving next to the deepest seawater loch in Europe, Loch Nevis!

The train stops en route to Mallaig at the village of Glenfinnan. Beyond Glenfinnan are the beautiful villages of Lochailort, Arisaig, Morar and Mallaig. You may alight at Arisaig by request to the guard. From here, on a clear summer’s day, you can see the “Small Isles” of Rum, Eigg, Muck, Canna and the southern tip of Skye. The train continues on from here passing Morar and the silvery beaches used in the films “Highlander” and “Local Hero”.

FORT WILLIAM (An Gearasdan)

Fort William, the largest town in the Highlands and situated at the south end of the Great Glen, lies in the shadow of Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain. This area is a fine location to use as a base to discover the Highlands.

GLENFINNAN (Glean Fhionghain)

We cross the 21-arched Glenfinnan viaduct (a location made famous in the ‘Harry Potter’ films) which overlooks Loch Shiel and the Jacobite monument. The train may pause here, time permitting, to allow you to take in the magnificent view. Once stopped in Glenfinnan station there will be time to stretch your legs and, if you wish, visit the West Highland Railway Museum located in the restored station building. ‘The Jacobite’ may also stop at Arisaig by request to the guard.

MALLAIG (Malaig)

The end of the line, Mallaig is a busy fishing port and ferry terminal with services to Skye and the Small Isles. Here you will find a wide choice of restaurants and pubs You might also like to take a walk around the harbour during the lunchtime stopover.

HOW TO GET TO FORT WILLIAM

season

From Carlisle, take the M6 and M74 to Glasgow. Follow the A82 from Glasgow. From Edinburgh take the M9 to Stirling then the A84, A85 (to Crianlarich) and A82 to Fort William. From Aviemore take the A9 and A86 or from Inverness, the A82. Whilst there is ample parking in Fort William near the railway station, please allow at least 20 mins for parking.
