Wild Boar, Wolves and Mythical Beasts

Among the most fascinating Pictish stones in the north east are the tall Sueno’s Stone, near Forres, the Maiden Stone and Picardy Stone near Oldmeldrum, the Kinord Cross near Ballater and the Migvie Stone at Tarland.

Beautifully carved stones with bears, wolves, wild boar and mythical beasts, and free standing cross-slabs, are evidence that this North East part of Scotland was a stronghold of the Picts. A highly civilised people, they lived here between about 300 and 900AD.

After the Picts converted to Christianity in about 600AD they started to erect exquisite, tall, cross-slabs with intricate designs. These are usually found close to old churches where they had often been broken up and used as building material, only being rediscovered in the 1800s or later.

Fortresses, Castles and Tower Houses

No other part of Scotland has such a wealth and variety of castles. There is Kildrummy, Scotland’s most complete 13th century castle, and 12th century Duffus, one of the finest motte and bailey castles in the country.

At the edge of the Cairngorms are the Hanoverian garrison castles of Corgarff and Braemar. Perhaps the most beautiful of Aberdeenshire’s many castles is the tower house of Crathes with its painted ceilings and entrancing gardens. The most recently built castle is Balmoral, home to the Royal Family since 1852.

Unique Stone Circles

The North East is famous for its special stone circles, erected about 4000 years ago and found nowhere else in Britain. What sets them apart is that they all have one massive stone lying on its side, with two tall flanking stones.

The large stone is usually placed on the south-west side of the circle. It seems likely the circles served a ritual purpose and that the alignment of the stones related to the rising and setting of the moon at midsummer.

There are almost a hundred such stone circles sited across Aberdeenshire. Most have been robbed of their stones so that little remains of the actual circles. Among the best preserved of these fascinating places are Easter Aquhorthies and Loanhead of Daviot.

The House of Automata in Forres, is a unique museum, workshop, and shop dedicated to the art of mechanical marvels. Sandend and Findlater Castle

Leave behind the surfers to cross Sandend beach and follow the coast path to Findlater Castle perched on the cliff top. Visit a fascinating medieval dovecot on the return to the picturesque fishing village of Sandend.

Cullen Bay and Portknockie

This superb coastal circular links the fishing villages of Cullen and Portknockie by way of some remarkable cliff scenery before returning along an old railway line. Allow time to enjoy the fabulous sandy beach or sample a bowl of hearty Cullen Skink soup.

River Spey meanders its way through the Cairngorms National Park and into Moray on its 107 mile journey to the Moray Firth.

One of Scotland’s few independently owned and managed distilleries, The GlenAllachie Distillery in Aberlour use their drive, passion, and desire to create a single malt whisky to be proud of, take a tour and hand-fill a bottle straight from the cask. Also well worth a visit are Aberlour Distillery and the Speyside Cooperage – makers and repairers of 150,000 oak casks per year for the local malt whisky industry.

Malt whisky distilleries offer a variety of behind-thescenes tours. Here you’ll experience the processes that have to be gone through before a grain of barley is converted into a drop of malt whisky Most distilleries have shops where you can buy a range of their single malts of varying ages.

For lovers of gin, this area also has a lot to offer. Gordon Castle’s award-winning premium gin is handcrafted using botanicals grown in their very own Scottish Walled Garden. Located in the old cathedral city of Elgin, AVVA Gin is an artisanal, small batch craft gin, distilled slowly with a selected mix of Highland and Speyside botanicals.

The Glenrinnes Distillery is the purpose-built home of Eight Lands Gin, using only the best organic ingredients to make their spirits. As well as being famous as the region of Speyside malt whisky. It also offers plenty of great attractions and activities!

With a network of trails through ancient pine forests and up into the hills, mountain biking opportunities here are excellent. Among the adrenalin options are white water rafting, canyoning, high level rope courses and zip wires.

There are several riding stables with trekking and trail riding for all abilities or you could take an off-road safari into the mountains.

For a bit of extra variety, you could try your hand at some blind 4x4 driving, clay shooting, zorbing or your own Highland Games at the Lochter Activity Centre over in Inverurie.

In winter, Cairngorm and Lecht 2090 offer some of the best skiing and snowboarding in Scotland.

If watersports are more your thing, head over to Cullen Sea School where you can choose from a wide range of activities including kayaking, paddleboarding, sailing and rowing. They even offer traditional boat building classes.

With a busy harbour and huge fish market, it is little wonder that Aberdeen is known for its fresh seafood, including the affectionately named silver darlings (Herring) that are landed every day in harbours and seaports along the 165 miles of coastline. You’ll find many eateries showcasing the best fish and seafood available. Inland you’ll find world famous Aberdeen Angus beef, with superb levels of marbling and containing excellent flavour.

Established by two friends, Dan and Alan, they set out to create Aberdeen’s rst distillery in nearly 80 years.

The distillery offers a range of Experiences and Anytime Activities, including a Discovery Tour (1 hour) and Gin School Experience (2.5 hours) - where you of cially become a distiller and take home your own 70cl bottle. If time is short, or your plans are in the air, then opt for one of the Anytime Activities - you can turn up and try the range of gins in the Flight of Fancy or even Design A Gin - you choose the botanicals and then collect the gin in around an hour.

The gin shop offers both traditional and unique avours, with a variety of bottle sizes and tasting boxes to choose from.
