Abbeys, Chapels, Crosses and Burial Slabs

Iona Abbey is Argyll’s outstanding historic site. The ‘Cradle of Christianity’ in Scotland, it was founded by St Columba in 563, became a Benedictine monastery in about 1200, and has long been a place of pilgrimage. At the entrance to the abbey you’ll see the magnificent St Martin’s Cross, still standing on the spot where it was erected almost 14 centuries ago. Behind the abbey church and cloisters you’ll find the new Abbey Museum. It charts the fascinating history of this sacred place.

Another of the treasures of Argyll are the early Christian chapels, with exquisitely carved crosses. The magnificent Kildalton Cross on Islay has stood on the same spot for 1200 years. Equally impressive are the Keill’s and Macmillan’s Crosses in Knapdale, and the two crosses at the priory on the Island of Oronsay.

The earliest known tartan plaid in the world is in Dunollie Museum. It was recently rediscovered after being used as a curtain in Dunollie House for centuries.

Splendid medieval burial slabs are preserved near several of these churches and chapels. These beautifully carved slabs often feature ‘birlinns’, Viking-like galleys that were once the main means of transport in the Western Isles. Kilmartin churchyard has an impressive collection of slabs, as does Iona Abbey and the chapels of Kilmory, Knap and Keills.

Stone Circles and Great Burial Cairns

The richest place on the Scottish mainland for prehistoric sites is the area around Kilmartin, just to the south of Oban. Here you’ll discover massive standing stones, some carved with cup markings, great burial cairns and stone circles. Kilmartin Museum, nearby, displays many fascinating items, some excavated within a stone’s throw of the museum.

Rock Art

Argyll is the UK’s hotspot for prehistoric rock art. At Achnabreck, just to the north of Lochgilphead, and other sites, you’ll discover rocks decorated some 4000 years ago, with intricate concentric circles and other designs. Almost identical rock carvings can be found in Northumberland, Ireland, Northern Spain and Italy.

Ancient Castles

Guarding the seaways, Argyll’s great castles range from the massive fortress of Skipness to ancient Castle Sween and the Maclean stronghold of Duart. Inland, just north of Lochgilphead, is Carnasserie Castle, the impressive residence of the Bishop of the Isles. Close to Oban is Dunollie Castle a Macdougall stronghold for 900 years.

Duart Castle sits prominent and proud overlooking the Sound of Mull. The castle dates back to the 14th century and is the ancestral home to Sir Lachlan Maclean, 28th chief of Clan Maclean. The castle is steeped in history with its ancient keep, banqueting hall and not forgetting the dungeons! On a clear day a visit to the battlements is a must, the views are spectacular. Duart has a tearoom which prides itself on serving locally sourced produce, traditional home baking, lunches and hot drinks. You will also find a gift-shop which stocks quality Scottish made gifts. Puck’s Glen

Follow half-hidden paths through this magical, deep, wooded gorge to discover cascading waterfalls and dainty bridges. Popular since Victorian times, the walk is a world of water, trees and mosses. Starting from opposite Benmore Gardens, why not combine the two for a fantastic day out?

Beinn Lora

Well worth the effort - a short but challenging climb is rewarded with spectacular coast and mountain view - see how many Scottish islands you can spot. Mostly on good paths, the final moorland stage can be very wet underfoot, go prepared!

Gylen Castle, Kerrera

This superb circuit explores the southern half of the beautiful Isle of Kerrera. Easily reached by a short ferry ride from just south of Oban, the walk has fine views out to other islands and visits the well-preserved and wonderfully atmospheric remains of Gylen Castle.

The Distillery Coast, Islay

An off-road path links four Islay whisky distilleries whilst taking in wonderful coastal views. Take a tour, sample a dram, or visit a cafe at Port-n-truan, Laphraoig, Lagavulin, or Ardbeg distillery. Get the bus back and you could even visit Port Ellen distillery which recently returned to whisky production.

Kilmartin Glen

Kilmartin Glen is one of the most outstanding areas in Europe for prehistoric remains, with stunning chambered cairns, standing stones and cup and ring marked rocks. This walk links the most impressive of the monuments close to the excellent Kilmartin museum.

Whisky lover or total newbieeveryone should visit a whisky distillery at least once for a genuine centuries old experience. Argyll has plenty of famous Malt Whisky distilleries ready to welcome you and share their secrets.

There are currently ten working distilleries on Islay, with two more planned to open in the next couple of years. The first recorded distillery was Bowmore, founded in 1779; the most recent was Ardnahoe, which was established in 2018. Islay’s distilleries are spread across the island; however, the three on the south coast –Ardbeg, Lagavulin and Laphroaig – are located next to each other, and are collectively known as the Kildalton Distilleries. Kilchoman is a farm-micro distillery, opened in 2004, and everything here is produced on site, growing the barley, malting, distilling and even bottling. Islay’s distinctive peated whiskies are a magnet for malt whisky connoisseurs.

Campbeltown at the southern end of the Mull of Kintyre once had 28 distilleries and was known as the ‘Whisky Capital of the World’. Glen Scotia established in 1832 is one of the few to remain. It produces two excellent but very different malts, one peated and one non-peated.

Easier to reach is Oban Distillery. Established in 1794, it is right in the middle of town. Even older is Tobermory Distillery, on the Isle of Mull, established in 1778. Jura boasts two distilleries, the Isle of Jura Malt Whisky Distillery and Lussa Gin at the far north of the island. Slàinte!

For gin lovers there is also plenty of choice, with the islands offering up many options for you to try. Lussa Gin, from Jura, produce a fresh, zesty, smooth gin with a subtle aromatic finish, capturing the spirit of their island home. The Isle of Tyree Distillery create a fantastic Hebridean Pink Gin that comes in a very striking bottle. From the remote and wild island of Colonsay, Wild Thyme Spirits produce their multi-award winning Colonsay gin and offer distillery tours and tasting experiences.

On the Isle of Mull you’ll discover Whitetail Gin, who take their inspiration from the majestic whitetailed eagle, Europe’s largest bird of prey and synonymous with the island. On the mainland, on the Kintyre Peninsula, be sure to visit Beinn an Tuirc, the sustainable distillers, and discover their range of award-winning sustainably distilled craft spirits, created in their remote distillery using their very own hydro electricity.

Boat trips are an unbeatable way to explore Argyll and the Isles and discover the wonderful wildlife that inhabits the region’s waters and coastline.

From Appin in the north to Campbeltown in the south, there is a large and varied choice of excellent boat trips.

Among the highlights is the Isle of Staffa with its great cliffs of columnar basalt and entrancing Fingal’s cave. Another highlight is the famous whirlpool of the Corryvreckan. Most trips will offer you a good chance of seeing minke whales, common dolphins, porpoises, grey seals, common seals and basking sharks as well as sea eagles, golden eagles and a host of seabirds.

The top spot for close-up puffins is the Island of Lunga just to the west of Mull. Best whale watching months are between mid June and mid September. Don’t expect to see puffins after the beginning of August. They will have long since left their burrows! Guillemots and razorbills will have fledged a week or two earlier.

There are a host of different operators who can get you out on the water, each offering something unique, and departing from many locations along the coast or from the islands. Seafari Adventures depart from the picturesque village of Easdale just south of Oban and provide wildlife and Corryvreckan tours. From Islay’s Port Ellen Marina, Islay Sea Adventures have many tours available to help you experience the waters around the island.

If you want to visit some of Argyll’s spectacular islands, then you will likely need to get there by ferry. Caledonian MacBrayne, usually shortened to CalMac, is the major operator of passenger and vehicle

ferries, and ferry services, between the mainland of Scotland and 22 of the major islands on Scotland’s west coast. These journeys can offer fantastic views, stood up on deck, taking in the surroundings and the fresh sea air, as you are ferried to your destination.

Loch Goil Cruisers, on the Cowal peninsula, offer you fishing, sightseeing and cruising on Loch Goil with their self-drive motorboat hire. On Loch Goil, you can see a seal colony, diving gannets, porpoises and oystercatchers, you may also see otters and even whales or dolphins occasionally. Look out for red deer grazing at the side of the loch, as well as the imposing Carrick Castle, with 14th-century ruins.

In the nearby Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park you’ll find lots of options to get you out on the water, with boat tour operators offering cruises and tours, as well as watersports activity providers who can get you on the loch jet skiing, paddleboarding or kayaking. A cruise along one of Scotland’s most iconic lochs is a truly memorable experience.

Glenarn is a private garden, largely created and made famous by the Gibson family for its collection of species rhododendrons. This garden was established in the 1920s and 30s, overlaid on the original Victorian layout, with some remaining trees and rhododendrons from the 19th century. glenarn.com

Benefitting from mild winters, the gardens of Argyll and Bute have long been famous for their great collections of rhododendrons, azaleas and magnolias.

Among the best are Arduaine, a sheltered oasis on a peninsula jutting out into the Sound of Jura, and Crarae, a Himalayan-style woodland garden stretching up a dramatic glen from the shores of Loch Fyne. Achamore Garden, on the largely frost free and easily reached Isle of Gigha, is also most rewarding.

Another great garden is Benmore, near Dunoon, with its avenue of giant redwoods, and many special rhododendrons and azaleas. On its sweeping hillside, a system of paths pass up and through beautiful areas devoted to the plants and trees of Bhutan, Chile, Japan and Tasmania. An unusual attraction here is the magnificently restored Victorian Fernery. In 2020, the four Gardens of Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (Edinburgh, Benmore, Logan and Dawyck) celebrated the organisation’s 350th anniversary in plant research and conservation.

You’ll be astounded by Mount Stuart, the magnificent house on the Isle of Bute. But make sure you leave time to explore the equally outstanding gardens. They were laid out in the 18th century and have continued to be expanded and improved ever since.

Other islands are home to some of the finest gardens. Achamore Gardens on Gigha offer a tranquil haven where you can stroll through natural woodlands, while Colonsay House Gardens provide a huge array of plants amid stunning surroundings.

Benmore Botanic Garden is on the A815 seven miles north of Dunoon on the Cowal Peninsula.

Inveraray Jail, County Prison of Argyll in the 1800s, was a place where children were once locked up. Today the prison warders will ensure that they have a far more enjoyable time!

Nearby Auchindrain Historic Township is the most complete and well-preserved example of Scotland’s rural history; it feels like the inhabitants have just left. The well curated tour allows you to step back in time and uncover a fascinating, long-vanished way of life and see how ordinary people lived hundreds of years ago.

Argyll Adventure is just a few minutes drive from Inveraray and is home to a variety of exciting themed activities which will keep the whole family entertained for hours.

Oban is well-known as Scotland’s number one mainland dive centre, with operators covering the Sound of Mull and Firth of Lorne and many excellent dive sites. If you feel that the sea is too cold for swimming, try out the Atlantis Leisure Centre in Oban with its 25-metre pool and the fastest flume on the West Coast!

Sea Kayak Oban is worth a visit if you are adventurous. Scotland’s West Coast is one of the world’s top sea kayaking destinations, offering everything from idyllic sheltered shores to wild tidal races. Sea kayaks are the perfect way to spot wildlife – the waters are home to otters, basking sharks, whales and seals, while sea eagles soar overhead.

Near Oban, you can visit the Ocean Explorer Centre, a free indoor visitor attraction where you can explore the science behind our oceans.

If you’d much prefer dry land, and specifically two wheels, then Oban Cycles are perfect for you. They rent E-bikes, Hybrids and mountain bikes, and give advice to help you make your daydreams of adventure into a reality.

Described as the greatest railway journey in the world, this 84 mile round trip takes you past a list of impressive extremes. Starting near the highest mountain in Britain, Ben Nevis, it visits Britain’s most westerly mainland railway station, Arisaig; passes close by the deepest freshwater loch in Britain, Loch Morar and the shortest river in Britain, River Morar, finally arriving next to the deepest seawater loch in Europe, Loch Nevis!

The train stops en route to Mallaig at the village of Glenfinnan. Beyond Glenfinnan are the beautiful villages of Lochailort, Arisaig, Morar and Mallaig. You may alight at Arisaig by request to the guard. From here, on a clear summer’s day, you can see the “Small Isles” of Rum, Eigg, Muck, Canna and the southern tip of Skye. The train continues on from here passing Morar and the silvery beaches used in the films “Highlander” and “Local Hero”.

FORT WILLIAM (An Gearasdan)

Fort William, the largest town in the Highlands and situated at the south end of the Great Glen, lies in the shadow of Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain. This area is a fine location to use as a base to discover the Highlands.

GLENFINNAN (Glean Fhionghain)

We cross the 21-arched Glenfinnan viaduct (a location made famous in the ‘Harry Potter’ films) which overlooks Loch Shiel and the Jacobite monument. The train may pause here, time permitting, to allow you to take in the magnificent view. Once stopped in Glenfinnan station there will be time to stretch your legs and, if you wish, visit the West Highland Railway Museum located in the restored station building. ‘The Jacobite’ may also stop at Arisaig by request to the guard.

MALLAIG (Malaig)

The end of the line, Mallaig is a busy fishing port and ferry terminal with services to Skye and the Small Isles. Here you will find a wide choice of restaurants and pubs You might also like to take a walk around the harbour during the lunchtime stopover.

From Carlisle, take the M6 and M74 to Glasgow. Follow the A82 from Glasgow. From Edinburgh take the M9 to Stirling then the A84, A85 (to Crianlarich) and A82 to Fort William. From Aviemore take the A9 and A86 or from Inverness, the A82. Whilst there is ample parking in Fort William near the railway station, please allow at least 20 mins for parking.
