DO YOU NEED TO
SUPPLEMENT YOUR DIET? A practical guide
to choosing supplements — without getting lost in the hype.
Ultimately, when we take supplements, we want to feel our best or improve our physical or mental performance. There are effective and exciting supplements available that may help support health goals. But how do you tell the difference between hype and something genuinely useful? This guide is designed to help you make more informed choices.
FOUNDATION FIRST
An individualized approach grounded in foundational health is essential. Whole Person Care emphasizes that supplements are meant to supplement, not replace, a nutrient-dense whole food diet, regular movement, adequate sleep and stress management.
ESSENTIAL PRINCIPLES FOR CHOOSING THE RIGHT SUPPLEMENTS
1
1 Third-Party Testing & Quality Verification
Choose professional-grade products that undergo independent third-party testing or meaningful quality verification. Examples may include NSF Certified for Sport, ConsumerLab, Non-GMO Project Verified, and Certified Organic. These programs can help assess label accuracy, ingredient purity and/or manufacturing standards, depending on the certification.

2 Bioavailable & Active Forms Prioritize nutrient formulas that the body can readily absorb and utilize. As always, if you are taking prescription medication, consult with your doctor to ensure there are no contraindications.
Examples of bioavailable essential supplements include: MAGNESIUM Glycinate, malate or citrate These forms are generally preferred over magnesium oxide when prioritizing optimal absorption and gastrointestinal tolerance. Magnesium Glycinate: Best for sleep, stress relief, and muscle relaxation. Gentle on digestion and well tolerated. Magnesium Malate: Best for daytime energy, stamina, and easing muscle fatigue. Magnesium Citrate: Best for supporting daily bowel regularity and relieving constipation.
B-VITAMINS Methylcobalamin B12 + 5-MTHF folate
Methylated B Vitamins are essential for cellular energy, brain function, mood regulation, and cardiovascular balance. Active Coenzyme forms are preferred over synthetic versions. Pre-methylated B Vitamins bypass the rate-limiting conversion steps governed by the MTHFR enzyme, providing bioavailability regardless of genetic polymorphisms. Ensuring a B-complex contains both active folate (L-5-MTHF) and active B12 (Methylcobalamin/Adenosylcobalamin) protects against the risk of masking a B12 deficiency.
2
OMEGA-3s Triglyceride (TG) or re-esterified triglyceride (rTG)
Since the brain is made of approximately 60% fat, it makes sense to supplement this vital organ. Not all Omega-3 supplements are created equal, so selecting a TG or rTG formula provides superior bioavailability & intestinal absorption.

Targeted Needs Over One-Size-Fits-All No single supplement is universally mandatory for every individual. Dosages and formulations should reflect health status, dietary patterns, stage of life, baseline lab markers, medications, and specific clinical or performance goals.
FOUNDATIONAL NUTRIENTS TO CONSIDER DAILY Baseline requirements vary by individual, but several foundational nutrients are commonly considered to help bridge dietary or environmental gaps:
Multivitamin / Multimineral Acts as a baseline nutritional safety net to help fill broad micron nutrient gaps in daily food intake. Look for a quality, third party tested supplement specific to your gender and lifestyle needs.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids (EPA & DHA) Supports cardiovascular health, cognitive function and systemic inflammatory balance, particularly for people who do not regularly consume fatty fish.
Vitamin D3 (with K2)
Bioavailable Magnesium
Supports immune function, bone density and metabolic health, especially with limited sun exposure or low baseline serum vitamin D.
Supports hundreds of enzymatic processes, including muscle relaxation, nervous-system function and sleep quality.

Look for wild-caught, sustainable sources and a balanced EPA-to-DHA ratio. Some conditions require a higher EPAto-DHA ratio, so consult a licensed doctor or nutritionist to find the ratio that best fits your needs. Generally, a 2:1 EPA/DHA ratio is adequate.

The benefits of supplementing with a high-quality Omega3 span many body systems, including cardiovascular & lipid modulation, lowering serum triglycerides and arteryclogging cholesterol. The EPA and DHA in Omega-3 supplements are also anti-inflammatory and reduce neuroinflammation & support mood.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR QUALITY INDICATORS Clear & Full Ingredient Disclosure — Premium supplements should provide transparency by listing active ingredients, exact amounts per serving and excipients/inactive ingredients. Proprietary blends are difficult to discern ingredient amounts, so watch for full disclosure of dosages.
Storage Requirements & Packaging — Some delicate nutrients, such as certain high-potency probiotics, liquid omega-3s and specific enzymes, may require refrigeration or light-protective packaging to maintain stability. Follow the manufacturer’s storage instructions.
Manufacturing Practices — Look for brands produced in cGMP-compliant (current Good Manufacturing Practices) facilities that follow established qualitycontrol requirements during manufacturing and packaging.
WHAT TO AVOID Proprietary Blends — Be cautious with products that hide individual ingredient amounts behind a "proprietary blend" or "matrix." The total blend amount may be shown then the dose of each ingredient remains unknown, making it difficult to assess whether key ingredients are meaningfully dosed.
Unnecessary Fillers, Additives & Artificial Ingredients — Consider limiting products with artificial dyes/colorings such as Red #40 or Yellow #6, hydrogenating oils, or excessivebinders and processing agents when cleaner alternatives are available. Potential Allergenic Ingredients — Read labels carefully for gluten, dairy, soy, corn or preservatives if you have known allergies or sensitivities. Do not assume an allergin is present if it is not disclosed; use the label and manufacturer allergin statement. "Magic Bullet" or Miracle Claims — Avoid products making extreme promises such as "cures," "instant results" or "miracle detox." Reputable supplement companies should describe support for normal physiological functions rather than promise impossible outcomes.
THE BEST SUPPLEMENT PLAN IS PERSONAL Start with the basics, identify actual gaps and consider diet, symptoms, medications, life stage and lab data to determine what you need to supplement. Then choose high-quality products that serve a clear purpose. A cabinet full of supplements is not the goal, but better-informed choices are.
