Nadine Atallah looks back at more than a quarter of a century working at Pearlsun hotels. It’s an award-winning career that she says is driven by attention to detail.

I made hospitality my passion…

I studied political science and international relations, but when I first came to Tanzania, I was offered a position at Sea Cliff Dar es Salaam because of my language skills. That was in 1999. I stayed at Sea Cliff –ultimately becoming Director of Operations – for 20 years before becoming General Manager at White Sands. I succeeded by combining quick, hands-on learning with formal qualification pursuits. Hospitality has become my passion. I enjoy the challenge. There’s no job like it. One of my favourite parts is that you meet new people every day.

I started working at Sea Cliff Hotel, Dar es Salaam long before the Pearlsun group was established in 2012. We are a proud group of independent hotels in Dar es Salaam offering a huge choice. Pearlsun is renowned for premier,

oceanfront, five-star hospitality in Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar, and White Sands is positioned alongside other prestigious properties in the group, We proudly fly the Pearlsun flag outside the property.

Pre-planning is key in a hotel of White Sands’ scale…

We have 143 guest room across a site that stretches 1.8km. We stage weddings with up to 1,000 guests as well as hundreds of delegates hosted at 15 conference rooms. The scale of operations here is significant. To ensure everything runs smoothly requires careful planning. Guests need to see that attention to detail. We try to be fair to everyone. Everyone should feel important. We might be hosting four weddings at one time, but no bride meets another bride. We have event planners and our staff our experienced in dealing with large numbers of guests.

White Sands offers something unique…

We are a Dar es Salaam hotel popular with business travellers, but unlike at most city hotels, when our guests are finished with their conference there is much more than just their room waiting for them. Here they can make use of our gym, pool, spa, trips to Mbudya Island and, of course, our beautiful beach. We can even link guests to some of Tanzania’s most under-the-radar but spectacular safari adventures within reach of White Sands. Mikumi National Park has never had the exposure it deserves, but now with the arrival of the highspeed SGR electric train connecting from Dar is easier. The hotel’s customer care team can help guests organise their trip.

My team is the foundation of the hotel’s success…

Many are pleasantly surprised to see the renovations and new features that have been completed since they were last here. We started major room renovations at White Sands in 2020. They are now around 90 per cent complete and the new bathrooms in the one-bedroom suites look wonderful.

Here they can make use of our gym, pool, spa, trips to Mbudya Island and, of course, our beautiful beach.

Around 60 per cent of staff at White Sands Resort & Conference Centre have been here for more than 30 years. It shows that they are well looked after and that there are avenues for progression here. I am not the type of General Manager that runs their hotel by video camera, I am very active on the hotel floor. I know all the staff by name and can communicate with them in both Swahili and English. I even take my regular early morning jogs around the hotel grounds so I can meet the security staff on their night shift before they clock off..

Receiving messages from guests stating they will never forget their stay is the ultimate compliment in hospitality. I still get messages from people who attended weddings here or stayed at the hotel. We create memories for our guests that stay with them. We have a lot of repeat guests which is another

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is key…

Since the hotel was first opened in November 1993, White Sands Resort & Conference Centre has been active in the Mbezi Beach community. Many of our long-term staff come from the area and attractions such as our onsite water park are a welcome part of local life. Our CSR initiatives further strengthen local communities by focusing on economic, social, and environmental support, directly benefiting residents. Projects include supporting the local Mchanganyiko school for the blind with recent work involving renovating a dormitory for 150 pupils. We also gave children from a nearby orphanage free tickets to our water park. Tumaini La Maisha, an NGO supporting free childhood cancer services across Tanzania, is another partner of ours. These simple acts can make a large difference. That’s what we are here for – to make a difference in people lives.

WHERE SAFARI MEETS THE SEA

Saadani National Park offers a safari experience found nowhere else in the region – and White Sands Resort & Conference Centre is ideally placed to connect its guests.

There are plenty of beautiful coastal resorts in Tanzania for lying on the beach, but only one for lions on the beach. Yes, Saadani National Park is East Africa’s only national park with a direct Indian Ocean beachfront. The park’s entire ecosystem extends to the sea. The lion population – uniquely adapted to the humid coastal environment with paler coats and shorter manes – are known to wander the dense mangrove forests and even make their way to the beach.

More of the park’s large mammals have been spotted on the sands. Ever seen elephants frolicking in the ocean surf? It can happen at Saadani.

Guests at White Sands Resort & Conference Centre are perfectly placed to take advantage of these beach and bush thrills. With the hotel located to the north of Dar es Salaam in Mbezi Beach, drives to Saadani avoid the city congestion to reach the national park in under four hours. With an early start this makes day-trip safaris achievable, but if you prefer a more relaxed visit White Sands’ concierge service can arrange overnight or multi-day trips. Accommodation in the park includes luxury lodges and eco-friendly tented camps.

Wildlife viewing in Saadani is more low-key than in Tanzania’s larger inland parks, but sightings are

rewarding and often intimate. Elephant, giraffe, buffalo and lion are all present, while both sable and roan antelope can occasionally be seen in the park’s grasslands. Along the coast, green turtles nest on the beaches, and the intertidal zones support a rich marine ecosystem.

Much of the wildlife is drawn to the Wami River, a yearround water source that is the lifeblood of the park. Wildlife gathers at its banks while the unique mangroveflanked estuary formed where the river meets the ocean sustains hundreds of hippos and crocodiles. Birdlife is a major draw, with more than 300 species recorded. The mix of coastal, riverine and savannah habitats attract a wide range of birds, from fish eagles and kingfishers to shorebirds and migratory species.

HOW TO EXPLORE

GAME DRIVES:

Daytime game drives explore Saadani’s inland plains and coastal bush, offering the chance to see large mammals in a uniquely coastal setting.

WALKING SAFARIS:

Saadani is one of the few Tanzanian national parks to offer walking safaris, allowing visitors an intimate, ranger-guided way to experience its unique blend of bush and beach.

BOAT SAFARIS:

Guided boat trips on the Wami River are a highlight, providing close-up views of hippos, crocodiles and abundant birdlife.

BEACH TIME:

Saadani’s quiet, undeveloped beaches offer the rare opportunity to relax by the ocean within a national park setting.

BIRDWATCHING:

The park’s diverse habitats make it particularly rewarding for birders throughout the year.

Relocation of communities is a significant, part of national park establishment globally. But Saadani Village, a historic trading harbour that is one of the oldest settlements in Tanzania (dating from the sixth century), remains within the park. Tourists can visit the village for an insight into a small-scale Swahili settlement co-existing with the surrounding wildlife.

Fishing is the economic backbone here. The mangrove forests flanking the estuary are vital breeding grounds for gigantic, plump prawns that are prized across the country. Visitors can see fishermen bring in their haul each morning and tuck into the seafood bounty –washed down with some ‘madafu’ coconut water from the palms that line the beach – at beachside restaurants in the village.

Five-year programme of luxury in-room renovations has almost been completed with more exciting improvements still to come in 2026.

CONFERENCE CENTRE TECH UPGRADES…

With its 15 conference rooms, White Sands is recognised as one of the premier MICE venues in East Africa. To ensure we continue to offer world-class services the hotel is introducing interactive screens for all conference rooms.

IMPROVING ACCESSIBILITY…

Elevators are being installed in the two-storey conference buildings and three-storey accommodation block for disability access. They will provide convenient and efficient access to the upper floors.

PADEL TENNIS AND PICKLEBALL COURTS…

Two of the world’s fastest-growing sports will soon be among the amenities for White Sands guests. Building work is set to begin on one padel court and two pickleball courts on a site opposite White Sands on the other side of Africana Road. Work is set to be completed before the end of 2026 and the sports complex will also feature showers, changing rooms and a small restaurant and bar.

SUKARI SPA…

After a five-year gap, White Sands has an on-site spa once again. Opened in November 2025, Sukari Spa offers massages, full-body scrubs, sauna and steam baths, a hairdressers, a nail bar, and manicures and pedicures. To celebrate its launch, the spa is offering 10 per cent discounts on all treatments to hotel guests. gem LIKE NO OTHER A

Born from the foothills of Kilimanjaro and perfected in the workshops of The Tanzanite Dream, this rare blue violet gem has become the signature of the Sea Cliff Hotel Dar es Salaam boutique. Jeweller Rajiv Nandha reveals the craft, science and risk behind Tanzanite, one of the world’s rarest gemstones.

The Nandha family of jewellers has had a boutique at Sea Cliff Hotel Dar es Salaam since the hotel began in 1998. The company was launched by Tanga-born Shashi and Doreen Nandha as Benetton Gems, but it is now called The Tanzanite Dream – named after the Tanzanian gemstone that, found only in a 1km stretch of the Merelani Hills near Kilimanjaro, is 1,000 times rarer than a diamond. Tanzanite has been the company’s fortune and its fascination. Now Shashi’s son, Rajiv, is continuing his father’s legacy as the company’s creative director. Using skills learned from a master jewellers in the US, he works to bring out the beauty of this delicate and capricious gem.

In Rajiv’s opinion, many sellers of Tanzanite – especially those that target the tourist market – are “selling the story” while he believes the real magic lies in the rare gem’s unique geological, and aesthetic properties.

He admits it’s quite a tale. Maasai myth has it that a lightning strike in 1967 set a section of the Kilimanjaro foothills ablaze and turned its previously unremarkable brown stones a sparkling blue-violet.

If it was an act of god that started it all there has been a Prometheus-like human takeover of the process ever since. The science behind the colour switch has been isolated with the trigger being revealed as vanadium, a mineral found in trace amounts inside the gem. In its natural state vanadium has a murky colour but heating it to around 600C forces the brown and yellow colours to disappear, permanently replaced by the famous blue-violet shade.

On very rare occasions, Tanzanite is pulled from the earth in its prized blue state with the heat having been provided by millions of years of tectonic plate movement around volcanic Mount Kilimanjaro. Mostly, though, the tanzanite treatment requires, in Rajiv’s words, “giving it a bake” – heating the gem in an electric kiln enough to transform its internal structure

The hope is that the Tanzanite will come out of the oven a vivid blue-violet – a colour that will earn it the ‘AAA grade’, the highest achievable on the Tanzanian grading system. Stones of this quality can fetch up to US$ 700 per carat (the weight measurement for gems that equates to 0.2 grams). It’s not a magical process. Initial material quality matters. If a low-quality, pale brown ‘C-grade’ stone is heated, it will turn into a pale blue/violet ‘C-grade’ stone. Only a high-quality, deep-brown stone can become a AAA stone through heating. Still, there is a significant element of risk and unpredictability to how tanzanite

turns out after heating. “It’s pure luck,” says Rajiv. It can, on occasion, go very right – AAA gemstones represent around 5 to 10 per cent of the total tanzanite produced – but it can also go very wrong. Tanzanite, Rajiv explains, is a relatively soft stone, ranking just above window glass on the Mohs scale of hardness. The heating process can cause it to shatter or become worthless.

Its fragile nature also means tanzanite must be mined with care. In the deep, hot and dusty tunnels up to 1,000 metres below Mererani, miners patiently chip away to extract the gem from the surrounding rock. “One seam can change your life,” says Rajiv, but he knows from his late father Shashi –who at one time owned a tanzanite mine – that the industry is characterised by significant capital expenditure with no guarantee of finding the gemstone. “He warned me to stay away from mining.”

Instead, on entering the family business, Rajiv bridged the gap between sourcing rare, raw materials and master-level jewellery fabrication. He studied in the US at the American School of Jewelry where he learnt diamond grading, coloured gem

Returning to Tanzania, he worked to rebrand The Tanzanite Dream from a souvenir and crafts store into a high-end jewellery outlet. The store at Sea Cliff led the transition with Rajiv’s brother, Siddharth, as general manager and his wife Nenshika and mother Doreen heading the sales team to offer a premium experience for customers.

Rajiv was designing many of the products available at the store himself. He also trained a team of stone cutters at the company’s workshop in Dar neighbourhood Upanga to transform unshaped stones into brilliant, polished gems ready to be set into jewellery. The quality of the company’s work led to it being appointed national jeweller for a time with official assignments including designing earrings for Michelle Obama during her husband’s visit to Tanzania as US President in 2013.

Delicate tanzanite demands a quality jeweller, says Rajiv. “Setting tanzanite is a skill as it is a soft

stone. We only set our own stones, and each comes with its certificate that guarantees the buyer is receiving a genuine, properly graded, and legally sourced stone.”

Tanzanite is becoming a popular choice for engagement rings. Rajiv ensures customers are aware that wearing a Tanzanite ring every day means it will probably suffer scratches, but his setting skills can help minimise the damage. “We secure the stone in a custom-fitted bevel setting to protect the edges of the stone so it won’t crack. We can repolish it over time, but it will lose a bit of weight.”

One of tanzanite’s most attractive aesthetic qualities – especially in the high-grade varieties – can be a challenge to jewellers. The gem is trichroic meaning it displays three different colours – usually blue, violet, and burgundy – depending on the angle from which you view it. It’s very beautiful but makes it challenging to pair two earrings or the gems in a necklace because it is very difficult to find two or more stones that consistently display the same colour blend. However, Rajiv shows with expert cutting and careful selection that it can be done. When I visit the recently renovated store

at the Sea Cliff he brings out an exquisite necklace of vivid blue stones that look all but identical. Rajiv showcases some of his most creative designs through his independent design house Rasifiwa with collections including tanzanite-set teardrop earrings and a one-off range of designer watches.

Rajiv says customers to the Sea Cliff shop – Tanzanite Dreams also has Dar branches in the Slipway, the Hyatt Regency Hotel, and the city’s airport as well as a store in Arusha – are increasingly knowledgeable about tanzanite. Ever since the stone was officially renamed by American luxury jewellery house Tiffany’s in 1968 – it’s previous name ‘blue zoisite’ was considered an unmarketable soundalike to ‘blue suicide’ – it has built a reputation as a premier luxury gemstone.

Part of its appeal is its rarity. Due to its single-source location it was billed the ‘generation gemstone’ with latest estimates suggesting resources will disappear within 10 years. Rajiv points out that he has been hearing that for a good 20 years now. “It’s going to run out, but I don’t know about 10 years,” he says. Still tanzanite’s limited lifespan does seem to be keeping up its price on the global markets. Unlike diamond and gold prices that have experienced extreme volatility, tanzanite prices have been consistently rising. “A lot of people are waiting for that global hike in price,” Rajiv says. He has already had multinational companies buying large amounts of tanzanite from his store as an investment to hedge against inflation.

When that vault in prices comes, Tanzanians will be the main beneficiaries. The mines are now under majority national ownership and control and there have been stories of small-scale Maasai miners becoming millionaires over-night from record-breaking tanzanite finds.

Rajiv points to Arusha, a city built on Tanzanite, and adds his own family – born and raised in Tanga before moving to Dar – has built a life around the gem. “Tanzanite is a no-conflict gem,” he says. “Locals are benefiting from it. You speak to any Tanzanian about tanzanite and they’ll say: ‘That’s my stone’. It’s a source of pride here.”

For Gerfrida Luvuya water is freedom. Growing up in Kigoma, she was drawn to the rivers that feed Lake Tanganyika. “It was a calling,” she says. “As soon as I started swimming, I felt a sense of peace. There was never any fear.”

The fear was felt by Gerfrida’s parents, who were concerned for the safety of their only child and, like many people within the local community, considered swimming an immodest pursuit for a young woman.

Winning a place at the University of Dar es Salaam meant Gerfrida no longer had to sneak out to swim, and now she had the Indian Ocean on her doorstep. She learned to snorkel and free dive – underwater diving done by holding one’s

breath rather than using scuba gear – in the warm, clear ocean waters.

The Wildlife Science and Conservation student was keen to share her awe of the ocean with others. She organised trips to Saadani National Park – the only wildlife reserve on East Africa’s Swahili Coast – with her classmates and engaged with the ocean conservation work of youth programme roots and shoots.

After she graduated Gerfrida started running boat trips to Sinda Island with activities for passengers including snorkelling in the Sinda Island Marine Reserve. The endeavour grew to become Marine Adventures, a conservationminded tourism company launched in 2022, with new tourist-targeted features including stand-up paddle boarding.

A transformative step was taken the following year when Gerfrida

learned to scuba dive, allowing her to gain intimate access to the underwater world. “I’ll never forget the first time,” she says. “It felt quiet, just me and the bubbles, and so close to the fish and the reef.”

Now as a Padi-accredited dive master, she leads dives by example, promoting practices such as ‘hovering’ in the water to avoid touching fragile reefs with gear or fins to ensure the sustainability of the underwater ecosystem. Her Marine Adventures team are also skilled divers and passionate advocates for protecting our oceans.

White Sands guests can now join in these sustainable dives as Marine Adventures joined the resort as its dive centre in August 2025. The company’s boat launches from Kunduchi beach next to White Sands for snorkelling and scuba diving trips. Gerfrida says there are areas of exceptional marine life and coral reefs within easy reach of the hotel. “Snorkelling is very good around Mbudya Island, which is a 10-minute boat ride away. The visibility is very good here. For scuba diving we go to Bongoyo Island where there is a shipwreck that has created an artificial reef. For a deeper dive there is ‘Octopus Wall’ north of Bongoyo with beautiful coral from two metres

depth to 18 metres. We also go to the Fungu Yasini sandbank, which is about 45 minutes from White Sands and has a pristine reef.”

Gerfrida hopes the trips will help spread the word on Dar es Salaam’s often overlooked diving experience. “Many visitors assume Zanzibar is the only local destination with a beach. Dar is a business city, but also a coastal city. Not everyone has the time to go to Zanzibar, but we have beautiful dive sites on the mainland.”

Marine Adventures also has plans to launch adventures in the neighbouring Kunduchi lagoon which at high tide offers the opportunity for guided stand-up paddle board trips among the mangroves.

White Sands guests who choose Marine Adventures will be conserving as well as exploring the marine environment. The price of each trip includes a 10 per cent donation to the company’s

marine conservation projects such as reef restoration and promoting sustainable fishing practices among the local community.

First-time snorkellers and divers are welcome with Marine Adventures assigning more dive masters to assist guests who are unsure in the water. Some are young local girls who have grown up nervous of the open water. Mastering their fear has proved a revelatory experience that Gerfrida knows well. “They tell me: ‘I have never seen the underwater world before. I feel like I have gained my freedom’.”

Silvia Bottosso, the General Manager of One Ocean Zanzibar, believes the partnership is “set up for great cooperation”. She praises the Sea Cliff’s exceptional client attention while the hotel benefits from working with the oldest and most trusted dive centre in Zanzibar.

One Ocean Zanzibar was founded in 1993 and in 2001 was awarded five-star status – the top-tier for dive centres – from the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) Thousands of visitors have enjoyed snorkelling and scuba diving trips as well as and scuba diving provided by its expert team, which aside from Silvia and one other instructor, is entirely made up of Tanzanians. All the instructors speak Swahili and English while two of them also speak excellent French.

Silvia, who has been with One Ocean for the past 20 years, says its three dive centres allow easy connection to “three best locations for diving in Zanzibar”.

Matemwe, located on the northeast coast, is the closest, and most popular launching point for diving and snorkelling trips to the Mnemba Atoll, famous for its

high marine biodiversity, including turtles and dolphins. “It has this turquoise water with magical visibility all-year round. You don’t even feel like you are under water,” Silvia says. “It is also very shallow so good for beginners.”

One Ocean’s diving centre in Matemwe village has been there for 15 years. Silvia says the area’s popularity with divers and snorkellers is having a detrimental effect on the health of the coral reefs in heavily dived, shallower, and sandy areas. One Ocean is doing what it can to reverse the process through continued education of the participants and being actively involved in a coral restoration programme.

Kendwa and Stone Town, in Silvia’s opinion, offer more intimate, tranquil, and pristine underwater experiences with One Ocean having the only diving boats in both locations. “The Stone Town reefs are in very good condition,” she says. “The island of Bawe just off the coast of Stone Town has excellent reefs and there are a couple of shipwrecks – the only ones of their kind on the island –worth exploring.”

Dives take place in the morning to capitalize on superior conditions, featuring calmer waters and better

visibility before afternoon winds pick up. Silvia says: “There are two dives or two snorkelling sessions on each trip and guest are provided with water to drink, seasonal fruit, and some local snacks. We return to the dive centre between 1.30pm and 2pm.” There are options for guests to extend their experience and visit a beachside restaurant to refuel after their dives. Silvia says: “Matemwe and Kendwa beaches are both beautiful so why not stick around for a meal and go back to the hotel later?”

One Ocean Zanzibar offers marine adventures for all levels. Guests who are new to diving – they must have adequate swimming skills and be in good physical health (a medical questionnaire must be completed) – can take a Discover Scuba course with one of One Ocean’s diving instructors.

These begin with pool sessions to learn basic scuba skills followed by an open water dive. There is also the option for pool sessions only. One instructor will teach a maximum of four students.

“We stop the ratio there,” Silvia says. “If someone needs extra attention we add an assistant. Safety come before everything”

Scuba diving guests must provide proof of certification, and divers are organized into small groups, with a maximum ratio of four divers to one divemaster. One Ocean Zanzibar has in-house certified equipment technicians, as part of the safety protocol all staff are trained in emergency first response CPR, first aid and as oxygen provider. They work with an emergency action plan that, in case of need, involves the use of the only hyperbaric chamber available in Tanzania, conveniently located in Stone Town.

Karma heads an expert team of therapists. Most of her staff

have more than 15 years of experience working in top spas in India and Malaysia. One of the team is also trained in Aryuvedic medicine – making Zuri Rituals at Sea Cliff the only spa in Zanzibar to offer this centuriesold Indian practice. Sukari Massage and Beauty Lounge

Sukari is the KiSwahili word for ‘sugar’. It’s an apt name considering the full-service spa’s indulgently sweet treatments including body scrubs that use granulated sugar as a natural, gentle exfoliant.

Body scrubs formulated with natural ingredients such as dessicated coconut, coffee grounds, and sea salt are a cornerstone of treatments at Sukari, which operates in a newly opened suite of first-storey rooms in a quiet corner of White Sands Resort & Conference Centre.

Spa owner Shamim Nyanduga says some of the scrubs on offer follow time-honoured Swahili traditions. Singo – a fragrant mix of honey, coconut oil, lemon juice, and sugar – is used by local brides-tobe ahead of their wedding day. “It moisturises the skin and makes it super soft,” says Shamim, adding that it is a popular treatment at White Sands, one of the region’s premier wedding venues.

Other treatments at the fully equipped modern spa include facials and a range of massages – deep tissue and Swedish among them – that can be paired with a body scrub for maximum indulgence.

Sukari’s sauna and steam rooms also complement the massages, helping to alleviate muscle tension and flush out toxins in the body.

Onsite beauty treatments include a full range of hair and make-up services, waxing, and a nail salon offering manicures and pedicures.

Shamim’s journey to spa manager has been an interesting one. After

calling to a close a 30-year-plus globetrotting career she found herself, in her words “retired, but not tired”. Now she is pursuing a fulfilling third act. She runs her own consultancy business and, since 2025, has masterminded the launch of Sukari.

Shamim has taken a series of classes to bring her up to speed on spa treatments, but the handson work is done by the highly qualified team of therapists she has assembled. The spa building is also new with a former storeroom next to one of White Sands’ conference facilities transformed into Sukari’s oasis of calm.

Officially opened at the start of 2026, the spa has already attracted plenty of local interest. To celebrate the launch year, Sukari is offering a 10 per cent discount on all spa and beauty services to White Sands guests.

Platinum Spa and Salon

Enter the Platinum Spa and you are met with the heady scent of oud – a clue to the Middle Eastern and North African influence to the treatments here.

Receptionist Mwantumu ‘Tumu’ Omary, who has been at the spa for six years, says the recently introduced Moroccan bath scrub has proved a word-of-mouth success. “It’s a 50-minute treatment with a scrub made from coffee grounds and Moroccan salts and applied with a special sponge. We create a steamy environment in the treatment room and the water used is very hot.

“You come out of it with super clean and smooth skin. It is popular with brides-to-be in the week before their wedding.”

The spa attracts both local Dar es Salaam residents and expats. Business travellers staying at the hotel also schedule treatments. Revivifying deep tissue massages are popular with guests checking in after long flights or between busy meeting schedules. For those who have been standing at a conference all day there are soothing foot massages.

The spa’s team of therapists amounts to four highly

qualified Tanzanian women each with at least six years of experience. The treatments they specialize in include reflexology that focuses on pressure points in the feet, hands, and ears over a relaxing 40 minutes; hot stone massage that eases painful areas and damaged tissue; and mood-boosting aromatherapy massages. Treatments can be combined with a discount on the full price.

Further down the row of boutiques that flank the Sea Cliff shaded walkway is sister shop the Platinum Salon. Head massages are on offer here, but they come as part of the salon’s hairdressing service. The salon is run by a Lebanese stylist of 35 years’ experience who is widely considered to be the best hairdresser in Dar es Salaam. Hair stylings to choose from include cuts, perms, straightening, bridal hair, and braids.

The salon also does manicures and pedicures, waxing, and has a nail salon with a Tanzanian team renowned for creating imaginative fake nail designs.

Hospitality is literally part of my DNA…

My family owned a restaurant in Germany called Zum Hirsch – ‘The Stag’ – dating back to the late 1800s. My grandmother was the chef. Even after retiring, it was nothing for her to cook for 25 or more people in her small home kitchen. I grew up hearing the stories, breathing the kitchen air, and watching hospitality in its purest form. Becoming a chef felt like a natural decision rather than a career choice.

It’s also a passport to the world…

My journey began as a professional chef before senior supervisory roles at hotels led to being General Manager. It is a professional journey that has taken me across 16 countries and four continents. Today, as General Manager of Sea Cliff Resort & Spa, my focus is on creating meaningful guest experiences while building a strong, engaged team.

So, what is it about padel that makes it appeal to women and men, young and old, and allows beginners to pick up the game with ease?

Well, the sport has similarities with tennis but removes some of the most physically demanding elements. The padel serve is underhand and hit below hip level, which is much easier to learn and execute than the overhead serves in tennis. Padel courts are also around a third smaller so there is less ground to cover.

Other beginner-friendly features include softer, slower balls that allow for more time for players to make their shots and a slightly lower net. The courts are also

surrounded by glass panels that allow players to make squash-like shots that deflect off the walls and back into court. Newbies will love that should they miss the ball on first try, once it bounces back off the back wall they can have another swing at it.

While padel lends itself to easy learning by beginners, mastering its strategic depth unlocks a challenging, rewarding game that can get very competitive. There are professional padel players who compete in leagues with international teams, including one owned by football legend Lionel Messi.

ShaNa Events

Shruti Pujara trained in events management at a highly prestigious university in New York. The famously fast-paced US city’s compulsively punctual environment proved an ideal grounding for her career planning multi-day, high-guest-count weddings. “In New York if you’re early you are on time. If you’re on time, you’re late,” she says. “I have carried that through with me.”

Now, as the founder and creative director of Tanzanian wedding planners ShaNa Events, Shruti brings this meticulous timing and attention to detail to ensure a stress-

free planning process and flawless execution for a couple’s big day.

Actually, ‘big day’ doesn’t really cover it. Extravagant Indian weddings with celebrations lasting up to a week are a cornerstone of ShaNa Events’ market. Born and raised in Tanzania, but with Indian heritage, Shruti understands the intricacies of traditional Indian weddings with their pre-ceremony rituals and dance parties.

The first wedding Shruti organised was for a friend in 2022. The threeday celebration in Mwanza generated excellent word-of-mouth and soon ShaNa Events was helming a a full calendar of upscale Indian weddings with four-figurte guest lists.

Clients include prominent business owners and high-ranking politicians that are after a no-expense-sparedspectacle. ShaNa Events handles everything from spectacular fireworks and floral displays to elaborate music shows with acts including a past winner of the ‘Indian Idol’ television talent show and Indian boyband Two Strings.

Now, Shruti says, the company is diversifying with weddings across a range of faiths and heritage. “It’s lovely to work with couples from various backgrounds,” she says.

ShaNa Events specializes in destination weddings, which only adds to the level of planning. Clients are international,

but with family links to Tanzania. With their beachside locations, Pearlsun hotels White Sands Resort & Conference Centre and Sea Cliff Resort & Spa Zanzibar are popular venues for these homecoming celebrations. “These places have been my go-to locations since I launched ShaNa Events,” Shruti says. “They have multiple venues – such as bandas, the jetties, beautiful gardens, and beaches – all together. That gives an event variety. Guests don’t want to be celebrating on the same lawn each of the three or four days.

“The management and staff know the nuances of Indian weddings. They also have Indian chefs that understand the cuisine as guests can be very particular.”

Hugo Domingo

The origins of Hugo Domingo can be traced to a single flower shop in Dar es Salaam run by two sisters, yet today it operates as an in-demand international multimedia events company harnessing the latest technology to create immersive, futuristic experiences for guests that have included presidents, heads of state, and global dignitaries. As business transformations go it takes some beating.

Three brothers – sons of one of the florist sisters – joined the company after their studies and expanded it. In the 1990s wedding planning was the first pivot, but a decade later one of the brothers, Mario Fernandes, used his creative background in multimedia to transition Hugo Domingo into high-tech corporate events. It was a steep learning curve. “We had to do a lot of research,” says Mario. “Not many people in Tanzania were doing it at the time, but we pushed ourselves and travelled to build our skill-set. We always took the challenge. Our team helped behind the scenes at concerts in London, India and Canada. We

would construct the set, the stage, the changing rooms, and ticketing booths.”

After proving itself on the international stage, Hugo Domingo began building a reputation at home for coordinating large-scale, high-tech, and innovative event planning. The variety of major events the company has leant its expertise to is impressive. Hugo Domingo coordinated the Olympic Torch Run in Tanzania ahead of the 2008 Beijing Games. They produced major cultural showcases such as Swahili Fashion Week and the Miss Tanzania Beauty Pageant. The company has also delivered events for leading international organisations, including the United Nations, UN Women, Unicef, and the Gates Foundation. Last year, they handled the high profile Mission 300: African Energy Summit that attracted 17 Presidents from across the world.

This year Hugo Domingo showcased its advanced technological skills to create a spectacular celebration in Dubai. To mark the opening of the Tanzanian CRDB bank’s first branch in the city a fleet of up to 1,000 illuminated drones choreographed to recreate

the bank’s logo in the Dubai night sky. Using Russian drones, Mario and his team organised the logistics – which included careful coordination to avoid disrupting the UAE city’s busy flight paths. “We taught ourselves to do it. Now we are qualified to storyboard these drone shows”.

Dubai is a global hub for high-tech, luxurious, and innovative event planning, but the Tanzanian company attracted plenty of local praise. “We were told that we are on a par with events companies there when it comes to levels of video production, and sound,” Mario says. “We are now international level in terms of equipment. We can cater for all clients.”

White Sands Resort & Conference Centre has also proved a good fit with for Hugo Domingo’s high-tech events. “White Sands has upgraded its sound and vision facilities in its conference rooms,” says Mario. “We know the place well and we complement each other. They are well organised which gives us the opportunity to work ahead of time on our events. And, of course, our clients love the beach.”

PASSION PROJECT…

Cape Classique is the brainchild of Tanzanians Ernest and Edson Mshanga. The brothers’ lifelong passion for cuisine started in the kitchen of their family home in Dar es Salaam where, as children, they were taught to cook for themselves by their single mother. By the time they were teenagers their culinary skills were such that family barbecues would attract crowds of locals. “Everyone would be asking:

‘when are you guys going to run a restaurant?’” says Ernest. With the arrival of Cape Classique, foodies across Dar can savour the brothers’ dream come to life. Edson plays a hands-on role in the kitchen overseeing the talented team of Tanzanian chefs while Ernest, whose nickname since childhood has been ‘sela’ – Kiswahili for ‘a cool guy’ – is a friendly, approachable host on the restaurant floor.

TANZANIAN TALENT…

As its name suggests, there is a South African influence to Cape Classique. Edson spent some years working in the Cape Town hospitality industry where he was impressed by the quality of Tanzanian chefs who had gone there to accelerate their professional growth. He was able to convince the best of them to return home to join the Cape Classique kitchen where they can create the Swahili cuisine of their Zanzibari heritage as well as international dishes they have been exposed to on their travels. The result is an expanded, regularly rotating menu of flavoursome African, Indian, and international dishes carefully created using quality ingredients.

WINE LIST…

Among the highlights of Cape Classique’s refreshment of the restaurant area at Sea Cliff is a lounge area of sumptuous sofas alongside a wall-mounted wine rack that brings the restaurant’s extensive wine list to life. The quality collection favours premium bottles from South Africa, but there are also examples from Europe and even a couple of home-grown varieties from Tanzania’s emerging Dodoma wine region. Ernest and Edson hope to build a wine-drinking culture in Dar es Salaam with monthly tasting sessions and wine-pairing suggestions for diners. The lovely low-lit bar is also well stocked with beers and spirits, and weekdays feature a Happy Hour from 5pm to 6pm for half-price cocktails.

WORD OF MOUTH SUCCESS…

Cape Classique launched in Dar when Ernest and Edson took over the running of the restaurant at a boutique hotel in Masaki. Word soon spread on the exceptional food and service. Among those to take notice was Sea Cliff Court General Manager Ilona Kadri, who was looking for a new restaurant partner. Meetings and taste tests followed, and it soon became clear that both parties shared a vision for a prestige restaurant at the hotel. Cape Classique moved to Sea Cliff Court in November 2025 – incredibly the team managed to serve guests during renovations – and has made an immediate impact. Not only have hotel guests been pleasantly surprised by the quality of the new restaurant, but also Cape Classique has become sought-after dining for the discerning palates of Dar es Salaam’s growing middle class. “With our focus on food and atmosphere, we are bringing an ambience to Tanzanian dining,” says Ernest.

HOW TO TAKE PICTURES LIKE A PRO

Think of a story, not a picture.

Anybody can hold a camera and press the shutter. It’s called taking a picture. However, when you frame and capture a moment that invites people in and makes them ask questions, then you have something more.

Pay attention.

Be in the moment and you will notice and see things others don’t see. Photography causes you to notice and appreciate details in life, little moments of beauty or interest, which most people would just ignore. These are moments to capture.

Don’t copy other photographers.

Everyone is different. Have the confidence to be led by your ideas. Think about what makes you different, what can you offer that the others don’t or can’t? Be inspired and try to do things your way.

Information is key.

Be informed, and you will be able to tell great stories. Understanding your subject, learning about its history, context and significance will help you create more insightful images. Research can help you be better prepared so for example you know the behaviour traits and habitats of the animal you are tracking.

Be on standby mode always.

Great pictures and stories (moments) come and go very fast and do not wait for you to be ready. Always have your camera to hand and always be prepared for that moment when the world provides you with that perfect shot.

Don’t be afraid to make mistakes.

Making mistakes is an important part of every photographic journey. Like an author goes through many drafts before he has a finished novel so a photographer can use images that didn’t work to refine what they do want to achieve. Fail better each time.

Know your equipment.

Whether you are working with just your smart phone or you have a dedicated camera with a range of lenses, it is important to familiarise yourself with your tech so you can make the most of its features. Make sure you get in plenty of practise before your Pearlsun stay!

Zanzibar

Darajani Market

What is it? Tucked in the heart of Stone Town, Darajani Market is a feast for the senses with stalls piled high with locally grown spices, fruits and vegetables, and freshly caught sea food. Originally built in 1904 during the British Protectorate era, the market was financed by Seyyid Sir Ali bin Hamoud, the eighth Sultan of Zanzibar. Over the decades, it has expanded into the island’s largest and busiest market – locals know it as ‘Marikiti Kuu’ or ‘main market’ – featuring a large, covered main hall for fish and

meat, surrounded by a sprawling open-air market for produce, clothes, spices, and electronics.

Where is it? You can’t miss Darajani. It’s like a town in itself on the edge of the ancient lanes of Stone Town. Head towards the Anglican Cathedral and you’ll soon by engulfed by the market’s bustle.

Specialities to look out for:

Fresh spices (cloves, cardamom, cinnamon), tropical fruit (jackfruit, mangoes, bananas), fresh Indian Ocean seafood (octopus, tuna, lobster), and colourful Tanzanian textiles like kangas.

Opening times: The market is open every day from 6am until 9pm. Get there between 7am and 9am when it is at its most active, and to catch the fish auction.

Forodhani Gardens

What is it? A vibrant evening market where locals and tourists gather to sample Zanzibar’s famous street food. The market is renowned for its lively atmosphere, with the aroma of grilled seafood and spices filling the air.

Where is it? Located on the waterfront of Stone Town, right opposite the Old Fort and House of Wonders, Forodhani Gardens is impossible to miss. Just follow the crowds and the scent of sizzling seafood as dusk falls.

Specialities to look out for: Zanzibar pizza (a unique, savoury pancake), freshly grilled seafood (lobster, prawns, calamari), sugarcane juice and urojo (Zanzibar mix soup), local sweets and samosas.

Opening times: The market comes alive in the early evening, typically from 5pm until late.

Kweta Kwenu Farmers’ Market Fumba Town

What is it? A community-driven market focused on fresh, locally grown produce and artisanal products. It’s a gathering place for farmers, food producers, and ecoconscious shoppers, offering a taste of Zanzibar’s agricultural bounty in a relaxed, family-friendly setting.

Where is it? Situated in Fumba Town, a modern eco-community on the southwest coast of Zanzibar, the market is easily accessible for residents and visitors alike.

Specialities to look out for:

Organic fruits and vegetables. Homemade jams, honey, and baked goods. Handcrafted items and natural cosmetics. Workshops and community events.

Opening times: The market is usually held on weekends, with stalls open from morning until early afternoon. Check local listings for specific dates and times.

Dar es Salaam

Kariakoo Market

What is it? The largest and busiest market in East Africa, serving as the commercial heart of Dar es Salaam. It’s a sprawling labyrinth of stalls and shops selling everything from fresh produce and spices to clothing, electronics, and household goods. The market is a sensory overload – noisy, colourful, and always bustling.

Where is it? Located in the Kariakoo district, just west of the city centre, the market is easily reached by taxi or dala-dala (minibus). Its sheer size makes it a landmark in its own right.

Specialities to look out for:

Fresh fruit and vegetables, spices and dried fish, Tanzanian textiles (kitenge and kanga fabrics), everyday essentials at bargain prices

Opening times: Open daily from early morning until evening, with the busiest hours between 8am and 5pm.

Kivukoni Fish Market

What is it? Kivukoni Fish Market is the city’s main seafood market, where fishermen bring in their catch at dawn. The market is a hive of activity as buyers haggle over fresh fish, prawns, octopus, and more. It’s a must-visit for seafood lovers and those wanting to

experience the authentic hustle of Dar’s waterfront.

Where is it? Situated near the ferry terminal in the Kivukoni area, right on the Indian Ocean shoreline.

Specialities to look out for: Freshly caught fish (snapper, kingfish, tuna), shellfish and octopus. Fish auctions and lively bargaining scenes

Opening times: Best visited early in the morning (from 6am) to catch the freshest seafood and the lively auctions.

Oyster Bay Farmers’ Market

What is it? A popular weekend market known for its relaxed vibe and focus on organic, locally sourced products. It’s a favourite among expatriates and locals alike, offering a wide range of fresh produce, gourmet foods, and handmade crafts.

Where is it? Located in the leafy Oyster Bay neighbourhood, the market is set in a pleasant outdoor space, perfect for a leisurely Saturday morning.

Specialities to look out for:

Organic fruit and vegetables, artisanal breads and cheeses, fresh juices and international cuisine, handmade jewellery and crafts.

Opening times: typically held on Saturdays from 9am to 2pm.

The launch of the Tanzanian Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) in 2024 saw the country become the first in East Africa to have an electric high-speed railway.
