NL De seizoenscampagne 2026-27 van de Munt spiegelt opera aan de dagelijkse realiteit die zijn verhalen blijft inspireren. Voor elke opera werd, in samenwerking met de beeldredacties van De Standaard en Le Soir, een actuele persfoto gekozen. Een manier om te benadrukken hoezeer de krachten die straks het toneel zullen beheersen dezelfde zijn als diegene die vandaag onze wereld aansturen.
FR La campagne de saison 2026-27 de la Monnaie met l’opéra en miroir de la réalité quotidienne qui continue d’inspirer ses récits. Nous avons choisi, pour chaque production lyrique, une photographie de presse contemporaine, en collaboration avec les services iconographiques du Soir et de De Standaard , de manière à souligner combien les forces qui s’empareront bientôt de la scène sont les mêmes que celles qui animent notre monde aujourd’hui.

Wanneer twee jonge mensen in Verona elkaar voor het eerst opmerken, verandert hun leven voorgoed. Ze weten zich voor elkaar voorbestemd, hoewel hun families door een bloedvete aartsvijanden zijn. Hun tragische lot is bijgevolg onafwendbaar.
Charles Gounod was in het midden van de 19 de eeuw een van de belangrijkste en succesvolste Franse componisten. Op een libretto dat het theaterstuk van William Shakespeare van dichtbij volgt, componeerde hij met Roméo et Juliette een hoogst evocatieve partituur die alle nuances van dit onsterfelijke liefdesverhaal treffend weet te schilderen.
Regisseur Julia Burbach creëert in samenwerking met decorontwerper Cécile Trémolières een poëtisch landschap waarin emoties zich vrij kunnen ontvouwen, maar waarin ook rivaliteit en geweld gestaag binnensijpelen. Dirigent Valentina Peleggi maakt met dit werk vol prachtige melodieën haar Muntdebuut.
FR À Vérone, deux jeunes gens se rencontrent – et leur vie en est bouleversée. Ils se savent destinés l’un à l’autre, mais une haine meurtrière oppose leurs familles. Une issue tragique est par conséquent inéluctable.
Charles Gounod est l’un des compositeurs français les plus importants et les plus applaudis du milieu du XIXe siècle. Pour son Roméo et Juliette, il s’appuie sur un livret relativement fidèle à la pièce de théâtre de William Shakespeare et écrit une partition très suggestive, qui parvient à dépeindre avec justesse toutes les subtilités de cette histoire d’amour mythique.
La metteuse en scène Julia Burbach crée, en collaboration avec la scénographe Cécile Trémolières, un paysage poétique où les émotions peuvent se déployer librement, mais où suintent aussi la rivalité et la violence. La cheffe d’orchestre Valentina Peleggi fera ses débuts à la Monnaie avec cette œuvre qui regorge de splendides mélodies.
EN When two young people in Verona first set eyes on each other, their lives are changed forever. They know they are destined for each other, even though their families are sworn enemies due to a blood feud. Their tragic fate is therefore inevitable.
Charles Gounod was one of the most important and most successful French composers of the midnineteenth century. Drawing on a libretto that closely follows William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Gounod composed a highly evocative score that aptly captures all the nuances of this immortal love story.
In collaboration with set designer Cécile Trémolières, director Julia Burbach creates a poetic landscape in which emotions can unfold freely, but where rivalry and violence also steadily seep in. Conductor Valentina Peleggi will make her La Monnaie debut with this work full of glorious melodies.
NL Toen componist Alban Berg in 1914 een fragmentarische theatertekst van Georg Büchner opgevoerd zag, inspireerde die hem tot een absoluut meesterwerk. Rauw en ongefilterd toont Wozzeck ons de ontmenselijking van een kwetsbaar individu dat hunkert naar erkenning en verbinding, maar systematisch wordt afgewezen en misbruikt.
In deze nieuwe productie graven muziekdirecteur Alain Altinoglu en regisseur Christophe Coppens dieper in de turbulente gevoelswereld van de soldaat Wozzeck. Een maalstroom van geweld en vereenzaming doet de grenzen vervagen tussen heden en verleden, realiteit en verbeelding. Langzamerhand glijdt zijn versplinterde psyche af naar één onvermijdelijke gedachte: moord. Bij de première in 1925 sloeg Bergs opera in als een bom. Honderd jaar later bewijst dit beklijvende werk dat het nog niets aan relevantie heeft ingeboet.

Dans cette nouvelle production, notre directeur musical Alain Altinoglu et le metteur en scène Christophe Coppens sonderont l’univers affectif chaotique du soldat Wozzeck. Une tumultueuse combinaison de violence et de solitude brouille les frontières entre le passé et le présent, entre le réel et l’imaginaire. L’âme brisée, le protagoniste est peu à peu gagné par une seule et unique obsession : le meurtre. Lors de sa création en 1925, l’opéra de Berg fit l’effet d’une bombe. Cent ans plus tard, cette œuvre fascinante n’a rien perdu de sa pertinence.

Raw and unfiltered, Wozzeck shows us the dehumanization of a vulnerable individual who craves recognition and connection but is systematically rejected and abused. In this new production, music director Alain Altinoglu and stage director Christophe Coppens delve deeper into the turbulent emotions of the soldier Wozzeck. As a maelstrom of violence and isolation gradually blurs the boundaries between past and present, reality and imagination, his splintered psyche slides towards a single inevitable thought: murder. When it premiered in 1925, Berg’s opera caused a real sensation. A century later, this haunting work proves that it has lost none of its relevance.

NL Assepoester wordt vernederd door haar stiefzussen en ziet haar fortuin verkwanseld door haar eigen vader, maar door haar goedheid en moed verovert ze het hart van prins Don Ramiro, die haar echte waarde inziet.
Gioachino Rossini, geniaal componist voor de menselijke stem, realiseerde met La Cenerentola een nieuwe krachttoer, waarin virtuoze aria’s, aangehouden zanglijnen, subtiele nuances, flitsende replieken en een bijzonder rijke expressie de personages haarscherp karakteriseren. De ensembles, van duetten tot zelfs een duizelingwekkend sextet, behoren tot de meest memorabele uit het repertoire. Voor zijn Muntdebuut blaast regisseur Daniel Kramer dit aan Charles Perrault ontleende verhaal nieuw leven in met een combinatie van magie, humor en onderhuidse duisternis.
Onder leiding van dirigent Speranza Scappucci, die eveneens bij ons debuteert, zullen Rossini’s mooiste melodieën subliemer klinken dan ooit.
FR Cendrillon subit les humiliations infligées par ses demi-sœurs et voit sa fortune dilapidée par son propre père, mais sa bonté et son courage vont lui ouvrir le cœur du prince Don Ramiro, qui perçoit sa vraie valeur.
Grand compositeur pour les voix, Gioachino Rossini signe un nouveau tour de force avec La Cenerentola. Arie virtuoses, ligne de chant soutenue, nuances subtiles, vélocité du texte et richesse expressive servent une caractérisation raffinée des personnages. Les scènes d’ensemble, du duo au sextuor étourdissant, comptent parmi les plus mémorables du répertoire.
Pour sa première à Bruxelles, le metteur en scène Daniel Kramer fait revivre ce conte inspiré de Perrault, mêlant magie, humour et noirceur sous jacente. À la direction, la cheffe Speranza Scappucci, elle aussi invitée pour la première fois dans notre maison, sublimera les plus belles mélodies rossiniennes.

“There is a place in the brain where music lives […], time cannot touch it.” Zo begint Lucidity, een psychologisch drama over Lili, die aan dementie lijdt. Ooit een gevierde componist en zangdocent, is ze nu afhankelijk van haar zoon Dante, die zijn muziekcarrière voor haar heeft opgegeven. Dr. Klugmans neurologisch onderzoek naar de relatie tussen muziek en geheugen brengt hen in contact met de jonge klarinettiste Sunny: de vier personages zijn getekend door verlies, maar met elkaar verbonden door muziek.
In een maatschappij die steeds vaker wordt geconfronteerd met dementie en alzheimer, raakt Lucidity aan thema’s als identiteit, sterfelijkheid en de prijs van ambitie. Aan de hand van een doordacht spel met tijd en ruimte creëeren Mathilda du Tillieul McNicol en Basia Bi ń kowska een visuele wereld die de desoriëntatie in Lili’s brein weerspiegelt. Het laatste woord is aan een nieuwverworven helderheid: “I see more clearly than I have in years.”

Celle ci, jadis professeure de chant et compositrice adulée, dépend à présent de son fils Dante, qui a abandonné sa carrière de musicien pour s’occuper d’elle. Dans le cadre de ses recherches sur la musique et la mémoire, la neurologue Claire Klugman les met en contact avec la jeune clarinettiste Sunny. Liés par la musique, les quatre personnages sont aussi tous marqués par la perte. Dans une société de plus en plus confrontée à la démence et à la maladie d’Alzheimer, Lucidity aborde des thèmes tels que l’identité, la condition mortelle et le prix de l’ambition. Dans un jeu subtil avec le temps et l’espace, Mathilda du Tillieul McNicol et Basia Bi ń kowska créent un univers visuel reflétant la désorientation à l’œuvre dans le cerveau de Lili. La fin laisse place à une lucidité nouvellement acquise : « Je vois plus clairement que durant toutes ces années. »

NL De rijkste man van Wenen trakteert zijn gasten op een spectaculair feest. Voor de gelegenheid is de nieuwe opera seria Ariadne auf Naxos besteld. Tot zijn ontsteltenis ontdekt de componist op zijn premièreavond dat hij de affiche moet delen met een buffet, een komedie en een vuurwerkshow. Alsof dat nog niet erg genoeg is, stuurt de gastheer gaandeweg de plannen bij: omdat het vuurwerk stipt op tijd moet beginnen, worden tragedie en komedie niet na elkaar, maar tegelijkertijd opgevoerd! In deze uiterst originele opera wedijveren ‘hoge’ en ‘lage’ kunst zo om de aandacht van het publiek. Niemand beter dan Ariane Matiakh om Richard Strauss’ fijnbesnaarde partituur te interpreteren, waarin voor iedere muzikant een solistische rol is weggelegd. Regisseur Mariusz Treli ń ski verplaatst het geheel naar de toekomst, waar de eenzame Ariadne op de planeet Naxos onverwacht gezelschap krijgt…
FR L’homme le plus riche de Vienne offre à ses invités une fête spectaculaire. Pour l’occasion, il a commandé un nouvel opera seria, Ariadne auf Naxos. Le soir de la première, le compositeur découvre avec consternation que son œuvre doit partager l’affiche avec un buffet, une comédie et un feu d’artifice. Comme si cela ne suffisait pas, l’hôte modifie le programme des festivités : puisque le feu d’artifice doit commencer à l’heure, la tragédie et la comédie ne seront pas jouées l’une après l’autre, mais simultanément. Dans cet opéra très original, art « noble » et art « populaire » rivalisent pour capter l’attention du public.
La cheffe Ariane Matiakh saura interpréter à merveille la partition raffinée de Richard Strauss, qui réserve à chaque musicien un rôle soliste. Le metteur en scène Mariusz Treli ń ski transposera l’intrigue dans le futur : Ariane, esseulée sur la planète Naxos, se voit entourée de façon tout à fait inattendue…
EN The richest man in Vienna is treating his guests to a spectacular celebration. For the occasion, he has commissioned a new opera seria, Ariadne auf Naxos. On the evening of the premiere, the composer discovers to his horror that he has to share the bill with a buffet, a comedy and a fireworks display. And as if that weren’t bad enough, the host introduces a change of plan: because the fireworks have to start on time, the tragedy and comedy are to be performed, not one after the other, but simultaneously!
In this highly original opera, ‘high’ and ‘low’ art thus compete for the audience’s attention.
No one is better suited than Ariane Matiakh to interpret Richard Strauss’s delicately balanced score, which includes a solo role for every musician. Director Mariusz Treli ń ski shifts the plot to the future where, on the planet Naxos, the lonely Ariadne unexpectedly receives company …

NL Zowel in Cavalleria rusticana als in Pagliacci staan mensen van vlees en bloed op het toneel. De werkelijkheid wordt er theater en, wanneer de maskers vallen, wordt het theater opnieuw werkelijkheid. In deze twee korte werken monden obsessieve liefde en jaloezie uit in hevige emoties en hartstochtelijke muzikale uitbarstingen. Mascagni en Leoncavallo brachten het landelijke Italië naar het operatoneel en luidden daarmee het muzikale verisme in. Damiano Michieletto herneemt zijn succesproductie uit 2018, die indruk maakte door de kracht van haar neorealistische transpositie naar een dorp in Zuid Italië medio 20 ste eeuw. Voor haar Muntdebuut belooft dirigent Alevtina Ioffe de rauwheid van deze partituren met ongeëvenaarde dramatische kracht te laten weerklinken.
FR Des hommes de chair et de sang occupent la scène dans Cavalleria rusticana comme dans Pagliacci . La réalité y devient théâtre et, quand les masques tombent, le théâtre devient réalité. Dans ces deux œuvres brèves, l’amour obsessionnel et la jalousie donnent lieu à de violentes émotions et à des déchaînements musicaux passionnés. En amenant l’Italie rurale sur le plateau de l’opéra, Mascagni et Leoncavallo ont inauguré le vérisme en musique. Le metteur en scène Damiano Michieletto remonte cette production de 2018, qui avait marqué les esprits par sa transposition néoréaliste dans un village du sud de l’Italie au milieu du XXe siècle. Pour ses débuts à la Monnaie, la cheffe d’orchestre Alevtina Ioffe promet de faire jaillir les cris de ces partitions à la force dramatique sans pareil.
EN Men and women of flesh and blood take centre stage in Cavalleria rusticana as in Pagliacci. Reality becomes theatre and, when the masks come off, theatre becomes reality. In both of these short works, obsessive love and jealousy give rise to violent emotions and passionate musical outbursts. When they brought rural Italy to the opera stage, Mascagni and Leoncavallo inaugurated verismo in music. Director Damiano Michieletto is reprising his 2018 production, which made a lasting impression with its powerful neo realist transposition to a village in southern Italy in the midtwentieth century. For her debut at La Monnaie, conductor Alevtina Ioffe promises to bring out the cries of these scores with their unparalleled dramatic force.

Gebaseerd op een waargebeurd verhaal: in Mao’s China wordt de Franse diplomaat René Gallimard betoverd door de innemende operazangeres Song Liling. De twee beginnen een passionele affaire die twintig jaar standhoudt, totdat ze worden opgepakt. In de rechtbank blijkt Song al die tijd – zonder Gallimards medeweten – niet alleen een man in drag te zijn geweest, maar ook een Chinese spion die informatie doorspeelde over de oorlog in Vietnam.
Met meer dan één knipoog naar Puccini’s Madama Butterfly smeedde componist Huang Ro in 2020 dit onconventionele liefdesverhaal om tot een beklijvende opera die genderconventies en culturele machtsrelaties op hun kop zet. Onder de muzikale leiding van Carolyn Kuan krijgt het werk nu zijn Europese première, waarbij Robin Adams en Kangmin Justin Kim (die de rol creëerde in 2022) in de huid kruipen van de twee geliefden. Regisseur Krystian Lada kijkt door de ogen van René Gallimard om te begrijpen hoe fantasie het soms kan winnen van realiteit, en hoe Pinkerton zich kan ontpoppen tot Butterfly.
FR Une intrigue basée sur des faits réels. Dans la Chine de Mao Tsé Toung, le diplomate français René Gallimard est séduit par la charmante chanteuse d’opéra Song Liling. Tous deux entament une liaison passionnée qui se poursuivra jusqu’à leur arrestation vingt ans plus tard. Au tribunal, il apparaîtra que Song était – à l’insu de Gallimard – un homme travesti, mais surtout un espion chinois qui livrait des informations sur la guerre au Vietnam. S’inspirant de cette histoire d’amour hors norme, Huang Ruo a écrit en 2020 un opéra captivant. Avec ses clins d’œil à Madama Butterfly de Puccini, l’œuvre renverse les conventions de genre et les rapports de pouvoir culturels. Pour sa première européenne, l’œuvre sera dirigée par Carolyn Kuan ; Robin Adams et Kangmin Justin Kim (qui a créé le rôle en 2022) se glisseront dans la peau des deux amants. Le metteur en scène Krystian Lada adoptera la perspective de René Gallimard pour comprendre la manière dont l’imaginaire peut parfois l’emporter sur la réalité et comment Pinkerton peut se révéler être Butterfly.
EN Based on a true story. In Mao’s China, French diplomat René Gallimard is enchanted by the captivating opera singer Song Liling. The two begin a passionate affair that lasts twenty years, until they are arrested. In court, it is revealed that all this time, unbeknown to Gallimard, Song was not only a man in drag, but also a Chinese spy who passed on information about the war in Vietnam.
With more than a nod to Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, in 2020 composer Huang Ruo forged this unconventional love story into a compelling opera that turns gender conventions and cultural power relations upside down. Under the musical direction of Carolyn Kuan, the work is now receiving its European premiere, with Robin Adams and Kangmin Justin Kim (acclaimed for his performance as Song in the world premiere) taking on the roles of the two lovers. Director Krystian Lada looks through the eyes of René Gallimard to understand how fantasy can sometimes triumph over reality and how Pinkerton can reveal himself as Butterfly.

NL Burmese Days, naar George Orwells debuutroman uit 1934, speelt zich af in een klein stadje in BovenBirma, het huidige Myanmar. Librettist Sarah Howe en componist Prach Boondiskulchok situeren hun hervertelling in de nadagen van de Britse bezetting, rond een ‘Europeans only’ clubhuis. Wanneer deze besloten kring zich moet openstellen voor een Birmaans lid, lopen de spanningen op. Sociale echokamers, politieke manipulaties en romantische verwikkelingen creëren verdere complicaties.
Deze kameropera herwerkt de roman vanuit een Zuidoost Aziatisch perspectief en haalt de relaties tussen de Birmaanse personages naar het voorplan. Hiervoor brengt de Thaise componist de kleuren en de virtuositeit van de hsaing waing en piphat muziek uit deze regio samen met een westers ensemble. Het resultaat is een soundscape die de contrastwerking verkent tussen boeddhistische kosmologie enerzijds en de koloniale machinerie met zijn complexe erfenis anderzijds.
FR L’intrigue de Burmese Days, d’après le premier roman de George Orwell, publié en 1934, se déroule dans une petite ville de Birmanie du Nord, l’actuel Myanmar. La librettiste, Sarah Howe, et le compositeur, Prach Boondiskulchok, situent leur version de l’histoire dans les dernières années de l’occupation britannique, dans le contexte d’un club house réservé aux Européens. Quand ce cercle fermé est contraint de s’ouvrir à un membre birman, la tension monte rapidement. Chambres d’écho sociales, manipulations politiques et intrigues amoureuses viennent jeter de l’huile sur le feu. Cet opéra de chambre revisite le roman sous une nouvelle perspective, celle de l’Asie du SudEst, et met en avant les relations entre les personnages birmans. Dans sa partition, le compositeur thaïlandais intègre les couleurs et la virtuosité des musiques hsaing waing et piphat, typiques de cette région du monde, à un ensemble occidental. Il en résulte un paysage sonore qui sonde les contrastes entre la cosmologie bouddhiste d’une part et l’appareil colonial et son héritage complexe d’autre part.
EN Based on George Orwell’s 1934 debut novel, Burmese Days is set in a small town of Upper Burma, present day Myanmar. Librettist Sarah Howe and composer Prach Boondiskulchok situate their retelling in the latter years of British occupation, around a Europeans only clubhouse. When this closed circle is forced to admit a single Burmese member, tensions rise. Social echo chambers, political manipulations and romantic entanglements create further complications. This chamber opera revisits the novel from a Southeast Asian perspective and brings the relationships between the Burmese characters to the fore. In his score, the Thai composer combines the colour and virtuosity of the hsaing waing and piphat music with a Western ensemble. The result is a soundscape that explores the contrast between, on the one hand, Buddhist cosmology and, on the other, the colonial machinery with its complex legacy.

NL Rusland, bij het aanbreken van de 17de eeuw. Na de moord op tsarevitsj Dimitri, zoon van Ivan de Verschrikkelijke, verlangt het volk naar een heerser die een einde kan maken aan honger en verdrukking. De bojaar Boris Godoenov wordt op de troon gehesen, maar twijfels over zijn aandeel in die moord ondermijnen zijn macht. En zelf wordt hij verteerd door wroeging…
Modest Moessorgski bewerkte Poesjkins historische kroniek over deze woelige periode tot een meesterwerk zonder weerga; hij stelde zijn muziektaal ten dienste van het woord en maakte het koor tot een waarachtig dramatisch personage. De Munt brengt Moessorgski’s eerste versie van Boris Godoenov (1869), waarin de vertelling zich onstuitbaar afwikkelt. In Vasily Barkhatovs regie is Godoenov behalve een gekwelde leider ook een liefhebbende vader, verwikkeld in een machtsstrijd van alle tijden. Na producties als Het sprookje van Tsaar Saltan en Jevgeni Onegin behoeft Alain Altinoglu’s vakmanschap in dit repertoire geen introductie meer.
FR En Russie, à l’aube du XVIIe siècle. Après l’assassinat du tsarévitch Dimitri, le fils d’Ivan le Terrible, le peuple réclame un souverain qui mette fin à la famine et à l’oppression. Le boyard Boris Godounov est alors porté sur le trône, mais des soupçons quant à son implication dans l’assassinat sapent son pouvoir. Il est luimême rongé par le remords… S’appuyant sur la chronique de cette période houleuse établie par Pouchkine, Modeste Moussorgski compose un chef d’œuvre sans égal ; il met son langage musical au service du texte et fait du chœur un personnage dramatique à part entière. La Monnaie donnera la première version de Boris Godounov (1869), dans laquelle la narration progresse de façon implacable. Dans la mise en scène de Vasily Barkhatov, Godounov est tout à la fois un dirigeant tourmenté et un père aimant, empêtré dans une lutte de pouvoir sans fin. Après avoir dirigé nos productions Le Conte du tsar Saltane et Eugène Onéguine, Alain Altinoglu n’a plus à prouver sa maîtrise du répertoire russe.

Modest Musorgsky adapted Pushkin’s historical chronicle of this turbulent period into an unparalleled masterpiece, putting his musical language at the service of Pushkin’s words and turning the chorus into a truly dramatic character. La Monnaie presents Musorgsky’s first version of Boris Godunov (1869), in which the narrative unfolds inexorably. In Vasily Barkhatov’s production, Godunov is not only a tormented ruler, but also a loving father, embroiled in eternal power games. After such productions as The Tale of Tsar Saltan and Yevgeny Onegin , Alain Altinoglu’s craftsmanship in this repertoire needs no introduction.

NL Bij de start van het symfonische seizoen blikt Alain Altinoglu vooruit op de feestelijke herdenking van de tweehonderdste sterfdag van Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 1827). Met de ouverture Coriolan als opener, gevolgd door het Vierde pianoconcerto in een uitvoering door Seong Jin Cho en de Vijfde symfonie als afsluiter, verkent het programma thema’s die de componist na aan het hart liggen: de kracht van het lot en het streven naar vrijheid.
FR Pour l’ouverture de la saison symphonique, Alain Altinoglu lance, avec un peu d’avance, les commémorations du 200 e anniversaire de la disparition de Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 1827). De l’ouverture Coriolan au Concerto pour piano n° 4 , interprété par le pianiste Seong Jin Cho, en passant par la Symphonie n° 5, le programme explore des thèmes chers au compositeur : la puissance du destin et l’aspiration à la liberté.

NL In 2027 is de Koningin Elisabethwedstrijd, een van de meest prestigieuze concours ter wereld, opnieuw gewijd aan de zangkunst. Ook nu begeleiden Alain Altinoglu en het Symfonieorkest van de Munt de twaalf kandidaten die voor de finale zijn geselecteerd. In recordtempo zoveel uiteenlopende werken in de vingers krijgen, is een uitdaging die alle muzikale krachten van het huis onder hoogspanning plaatst. De deelname van enkele MM Soloists en MM Laureates maakt deze editie voor de Munt extra bijzonder.
FR Le Concours Reine Elisabeth, l’une des compétitions musicales parmi les plus prestigieuses au monde, sera à nouveau consacré au chant en 2027. Comme il se doit, Alain Altinoglu et l’Orchestre symphonique de la Monnaie accompagneront les douze candidat·es sélectionné·es pour la finale.
Cet énorme défi exige de maîtriser en un temps record des œuvres extrêmement variées, et se relève toujours dans une atmosphère électrique.
La participation de quelques MM Soloists et MM Laureates rend cette édition particulièrement exceptionnelle.
EN In 2027 the Queen Elisabeth Competition, one of the world’s most prestigious music competitions, will once again be dedicated to the voice. As is fitting, Alain Altinoglu and the La Monnaie Symphony Orchestra will accompany the twelve candidates selected for the final. This enormous challenge requires mastering an extremely varied repertoire in record time and it always takes place in a highly charged atmosphere. The excitement at La Monnaie will be all the more intense for this edition, as several of our MM Soloists and MM Laureates will be taking part in the competition.

In de sfeervolle setting van de Grote Foyer geniet je een uur lang van een heel nabije luisterervaring, gedragen door kleine bezettingen die de persoonlijkheid en sensibiliteit van elke vertolker tot hun recht laten komen. Als een speelveld voor verkenning en uitwisseling laat het nieuwe seizoen de muzikanten van het orkest toe om elkaar op een andere manier te leren kennen en samen op ontdekking te gaan door het repertoire, zonder daarbij de grote klassiekers te vergeten. Kamermuziek wordt zo synoniem voor een plek van artistieke ontmoeting, betrokkenheid en hernieuwde nieuwsgierigheid.

NL Kamermuziek vormt het fundament voor de ontwikkeling en het artistieke parcours van orkestmusici. Ze is bij uitstek het genre waar een echte dialoog en een gedeelde muzikale verantwoordelijkheid tot stand komt, waar elke vertolker voor honderd procent betrokken is en je niet anders kan dan samen te luisteren. Kamermusici leren tegelijk vrijer en met een grotere aandacht voor anderen spelen, en de kwaliteit van die muzikale relatie voedt vervolgens het werk in symfonisch verband. Ook op menselijk vlak bevordert het de samenhang van het ensemble. Het ontdekken en verdedigen van zelden geprogrammeerde werken neemt een centrale plaats in binnen mijn artistieke praktijk. Ik vind het evident om vrouwelijk componisten onder de aandacht te brengen die ten onrechte in de schaduw zijn gebleven. Het Pianokwartet van Jeanne Leleu of de Sonate voor viool en piano van Marguerite Canal, bijvoorbeeld, getuigen van een zeer subtiele schriftuur met een opmerkelijk expressieve en poëtische kracht. Het is voor mij een artistieke noodzaak om die werken in onze tijd te laten weerklinken en te delen met het publiek.
FR La musique de chambre constitue un socle fondamental dans la formation et le parcours d’un musicien d’orchestre. Elle offre un lieu privilégié de dialogue et de responsabilité partagée, où chaque interprète s’investit pleinement et où l’écoute collective
devient plus exigeante. Cette pratique favorise une liberté de jeu, une attention accrue aux autres et une qualité de relation musicale qui nourrissent ensuite le travail symphonique. Elle contribue aussi à renforcer les liens humains entre musiciens et à nourrir la cohésion de l’ensemble. La découverte et la défense de répertoires encore trop rarement programmés tiennent également une place centrale dans mon implication artistique. Aussi, mettre en lumière des compositrices injustement restées dans l’ombre s’impose comme une évidence. Le Quatuor avec piano de Jeanne Leleu ou la Sonate pour violon et piano de Marguerite Canal révèlent une écriture d’une grande subtilité, d’une richesse expressive et poétique remarquable. Faire entendre ces œuvres aujourd’hui, les partager et les transmettre, répond à une véritable nécessité artistique.
EN Chamber music is an essential foundation in the training and career of orchestra musicians. It is a privileged space for dialogue and shared responsibility, where each player is fully invested and where collective listening becomes more demanding. It pushes performers to play more freely while lending increased attention to others and developing a musical relationship of high quality that will then feed into the symphonic work. Chamber music also helps to strengthen the human bonds between musicians and to nurture the cohesion of the ensemble. The discovery and promotion of repertoires that are still too rarely programmed also play a central role in my artistic involvement. Highlighting female composers who have been unjustly overlooked is an obvious priority. Jeanne Leleu’s Piano Quartet and Marguerite Canal’s Violin and Piano Sonata reveal a style of writing that is highly subtle and remarkably rich in expressiveness and poetry. Performing these works today, sharing them and passing them on, is a true artistic necessity.

NL Ik kan me geen andere ervaring voorstellen die zo verrijkend is voor mijn artistieke expressie als kamermuziek. Ze versterkt de muzikale en menselijke cohesie, en ze biedt me de mogelijkheid om werken te verkennen die niet moeten onderdoen voor het solo of orkestrepertoire – vaak dankzij bijzondere arrangementen. Zo herinner ik me, om maar één voorbeeld te geven, het spelplezier dat ik samen met mijn collega’s heb ervaren bij de vertolking van Chant de Linos, een virtuoos stuk voor fluit en piano van componist André Jolivets, dat hij ook getranscribeerd heeft voor klein ensemble. Hoewel ik het werk al vaak met piano had gespeeld, kreeg ik er door deze versie, die ongekende muzikale kleuren aan het licht bracht, een compleet nieuwe kijk op.
Kamermuziek is ook een ideaal terrein om te experimenteren. Zo zou ik graag symfonische werken als Gustav Mahlers Vierde symfonie of Das Lied von der Erde in een kamermuziekversie willen brengen, om te laten horen hoe een beperkt ensemble toch de kleuren rijkdom van originele orkestwerken kan reproduceren.
FR Je peux difficilement imaginer une expérience plus enrichissante que celle de la musique de chambre pour nourrir mon expression artistique de flûtiste. Elle renforce la cohésion musicale et humaine, m’offre la possibilité d’explorer un répertoire aussi vaste que celui pour solo ou de l’orchestre, et ce, souvent à travers des arrangements surprenants. Je me souviens du plaisir de jouer avec mes collègues Chant de Linos d’André Jolivet, une pièce
virtuose pour flûte et piano, retranscrite par le compositeur pour un ensemble : après l’avoir jouée maintes fois avec piano, la redécouvrir au cœur d’une formation m’a offert une expérience nouvelle, révélant des couleurs musicales inédites.
La musique de chambre est aussi un terrain d’expérimentation idéal : j’aimerais proposer au public des œuvres symphoniques de Gustav Mahler dans une version chambriste, comme la Quatrième symphonie ou Das Lied von der Erde, pour montrer comment un petit ensemble peut reproduire la richesse des couleurs d’œuvres originales pour orchestre.
EN I can hardly imagine a more enriching experience than chamber music to nourish my artistic expression as a flutist. It strengthens musical and human cohesion, offers me the opportunity to explore a repertoire as vast as that of solo or orchestra, often through surprising arrangements. I remember the pleasure of performing André Jolivet’s Chant de Linos with my colleagues, a virtuoso piece for flute and piano, transcribed by the composer for an ensemble: after playing it many times with piano, rediscovering it with an ensemble offered me a new experience, revealing fresh musical colours. Chamber music is also an ideal field for experimentation. I would like to offer audiences symphonic works by Gustav Mahler in a chamber music version, such as Symphony No.4 or Das Lied von der Erde, to show how a small ensemble can reproduce the rich colours of original works for orchestra.

De Trinidadiaanse sopraan roept daarbij de pijnlijke geschiedenis van de slavernij op en deelt haar hedendaagse visie op de zwarte identiteit. NL Een vrouw wordt wakker met een stevige kater, een onbekende in haar bed, en weinig herinneringen aan de voorbije nacht… Het is het vertrekpunt van dit heerlijke ‘one woman cabaret’, waarin mezzosopraan Marina Viotti met het beste uit opera, Lied, musical en Franse chanson alle ‘highs’ en ‘lows’ van de liefde bezingt. In speelse interactie met het publiek bewijst ze dat de beste date nog steeds die met de muziek is.
FR Une femme se réveille avec une solide gueule de bois, un inconnu dans son lit et de vagues souvenirs de la nuit écoulée… Tel est le point de départ de ce délicieux onewoman cabaret, dans lequel la mezzo soprano Marina Viotti prête sa voix au meilleur de l’opéra, du lied, du musical et de la chanson française pour chanter les hauts et les bas amoureux. Dans une interaction pétulante avec le public, elle démontre qu’en matière de rendez vous galant, rien ne vaut la musique.
EN A woman wakes up with a severe hangover, a stranger in her bed and few memories of the night before … This is the starting point of this wonderful onewoman cabaret in which mezzo soprano Marina Viotti, drawing on the best of opera, lied, musical theatre and French chanson, sings of the highs and lows of love. In playful interaction with the audience, she proves that the best date is still the one with music.

NL Oorlog treft iedereen. Samen met pianist Eric Schneider laat sopraan Anna Prohaska in dit aangrijpende recital de stemmen horen van zij die gaan en van zij die achterblijven, van zij die vluchten en van zij die sterven. Intieme liederen van Schubert en Wolf verweven met het scherpe modernisme van componisten als Eisler en Ives: als geboren verteller smeedt Prohaska hun kleine en grote verhalen samen tot een meerstemmig geheel.

NL Op 22 september 2015 wordt Renfrew County (Canada) opgeschrikt door de brutale moord op drie vrouwen, allemaal voormalige partners van de dader. Onder de slachtoffers is Nathalie Warmerdam, zus van bariton Joshua Hopkins. Samen met componist Jake Heggie en schrijfster Margaret Atwood zette hij zijn rouw om in Songs for Murdered Sisters, een aanklacht tegen elke vorm van gendergerelateerd geweld. De liedcyclus wordt in thematische spanning gebracht met Robert Schumanns Frauenliebe und -leben , een 19 de eeuws ideaalbeeld van vrouwelijke toewijding.
FR Le 22 septembre 2015, le comté canadien de Renfrew a été saisi d’effroi à l’annonce du meurtre brutal de trois femmes, toutes trois ex compagnes de l’auteur des faits. L’une de ces victimes était Nathalie Warmerdam, sœur du baryton Joshua Hopkins. En collaboration avec le compositeur Jake Heggie et l’écrivaine Margaret Atwood, le chanteur a transposé son deuil et sa tristesse dans Songs for Murdered Sisters, une condamnation de toute forme de violence liée au genre. À ce cycle de songs répond par contraste le cycle Frauenliebe und -leben de Robert Schumann, qui célèbre l’image idéale de la femme au XIXe siècle, tout entière amour et dévouement.
EN On 22 September 2015, Renfrew County (Canada) was shocked by the brutal murder of three women, all former partners of the perpetrator. Among the victims was Nathalie Warmerdam, the sister of baritone Joshua Hopkins. Together with composer Jake Heggie and writer Margaret Atwood, Hopkins turned his grief into Songs for Murdered Sisters, an indictment of all forms of gender based violence. The song cycle is brought into thematic tension with Robert Schumann’s Frauenliebe und -leben , a nineteenth century idealised image of woman’s love and devotion.

NL Duizend mijl – de afstand tussen klassieke muziek en jazz of cabaret? Of tussen het oude en het nieuwe continent? Met Kurt Weill als centrale artiest overbruggen mezzosopraan Kate Lindsey en pianist Baptiste Trotignon die afstanden moeiteloos. In hun koffers: muziek vol heimwee en verlangen van drie andere componisten die aan de vooravond van de Tweede Wereldoorlog hun thuisland moesten verlaten voor Amerika.
FR Mille miles. Serait ce la distance entre la musique classique et le jazz ou le cabaret ? Ou entre l’Ancien et le Nouveau Continents ? En compagnie de Kurt Weill, la mezzo soprano Kate Lindsey et le pianiste Baptiste Trotignon franchissent sans peine ces distances. Dans leurs valises, une musique empreinte de mal du pays et d’espoirs : ceux de Weill et de trois autres compositeurs qui, comme lui, s’exilèrent aux États Unis à la veille de la Deuxième Guerre mondiale.

FR Sous la direction d’Emmanuel Trenque, les Chœurs de la Monnaie vous ont concocté un programme de chants de Noël aussi foisonnant qu’éclectique. NL Voor het zevende jaar op rij brengt Troika Dance de stad Brussel in vervoering op het ritme van de dans. Deze gezamenlijke programmering van de Munt, KVS en Théâtre National Wallonie-Bruxelles nodigt je uit om voorstellingen in verschillende zalen en locaties bij te wonen, institutionele grenzen te doorbreken en de veelzijdige artistieke rijkdom van België te vieren. Met veel choreografisch elan en een grote diversiteit aan bekende namen en ontluikend talent komt de grootste dansscène van de hoofdstad opnieuw in beweging!
Nieuw dit jaar is dat de drie huizen elk een open dansworkshop organiseren: toegankelijk voor een breed publiek en omkaderd door vermaarde choreografen.
FR Pour la septième année consécutive, Troika Dance fait vibrer Bruxelles au rythme de la danse. Cette programmation commune de la Monnaie, du KVS et du Théâtre National Wallonie-Bruxelles invite le public à circuler entre les différentes salles et les lieux, à franchir les frontières institutionnelles, mettant en avant la richesse multiple de la Belgique. La plus grande scène de danse de la capitale s’anime ainsi au gré de l’élan chorégraphique, avec une affiche variée qui mêle grands noms et talents émergents.
Grande nouveauté cette année : chaque institution organise des ateliers de danse accessibles à un large public, encadrés par des chorégraphes de renom.

NL Nadat ze eerder twee bewegingen van Beethovens Zevende symfonie choreografeerde in de ruïnes van Delphi, nam Sasha Waltz, Duitslands meest vooraanstaande choreografe sinds Pina Bausch, de volledige symfonie als uitgangspunt van een nieuwe voorstelling. Beethovens ritmische vitaliteit krijgt een spiegelbeeld in haar ogenschijnlijk chaotische maar heel precieze dansidioom. De elektronische muziek die de Chileense componist Diego Noguera realiseerde tijdens het creatieproces, vormt de soundscape voor het eerste deel van de avond.
FR Après avoir présenté deux mouvements de la Septième symphonie de Beethoven dans les ruines de Delphes, Sasha Waltz, la plus grande chorégraphe d’Allemagne depuis Pina Bausch, fonde son nouveau spectacle sur l’œuvre dans son entièreté. La vitalité rythmique de Beethoven trouve un écho dans son langage dansé, extrêmement précis sous des apparences chaotiques. En première partie de soirée, le compositeur chilien Diego Noguera propose un paysage sonore électronique intense, réalisé pendant le processus de création.
EN After previously choreographing two movements of Beethoven’s Symphony No.7 in the ruins of Delphi, Sasha Waltz, Germany’s most prominent choreographer since Pina Bausch, took the entire symphony as the starting point for a new performance. Beethoven’s rhythmic vitality is mirrored in her seemingly chaotic but in fact highly precise dance idiom. The electronic music created by Chilean composer Diego Noguera during the creative process forms the soundscape for the first part of the evening.

NL Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui was een tiener toen zijn vader stierf. Dertig jaar later zocht de intussen wereldvermaarde choreograaf vergeefs naar zijn graf op een overvolle begraafplaats in Tanger. Hij blijft naar hem zoeken in deze heel eigen creatie, die ook een eerbetoon brengt aan Ihsane Jarfi, in 2012 slachtoffer van een racistische en homofobe moord in Luik. Samen met een uniek artistiek team onthult Cherkaoui in zijn choreografie de onzichtbare draden die ons verbinden in weerwil van het hedendaagse identitaire discours.
FR Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui était adolescent à la mort de son père. Trente ans plus tard, devenu un chorégraphe de réputation mondiale, il a cherché en vain sa tombe dans un cimetière surpeuplé de Tanger. C’est encore son père qu’il cherche dans cette création très personnelle, qui rend aussi hommage à Ihsane Jarfi, victime d’un meurtre raciste et homophobe à Liège en 2012. En collaboration avec une équipe artistique d’exception, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui met au jour dans cette chorégraphie les fils invisibles qui nous relient, envers et contre les discours identitaires actuels.
EN Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui was a teenager when his father died. Thirty years later, now a world renowned choreographer, he searched in vain for his father’s grave in an overcrowded cemetery in Tangier. He continues to search for him in this very personal creation, which also pays tribute to Ihsane Jarfi, the victim of a racist and homophobic murder in Liège in 2012. Together with a unique artistic team, Cherkaoui reveals in his choreography the invisible threads that bind us, despite the contemporary discourse on identity.

NL Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker verkent de eerste minimalistische stappen van Philip Glass aan de hand van vier stukken – Music in Contrary Motion , Music in Fifths, Music in Similar Motion en Music with Changing Parts – die hij in de periode 1969 1970 schreef, na zijn ontmoeting met Ravi Shankar. Met GLA55 put ze een radicale danstaal uit, gebaseerd op herhaling, trance en choreografisch materiaal dat tot zijn essentie herleid wordt. Cirkels, spiralen en beweging structureren de voorstelling, waarin zes dansers van Rosas en de ensembles Bl!ndman en Ictus hun talent bundelen voor een immersieve ervaring.

Hun twee lichamen – het ene valide, het andere motorisch beperkt door cerebrale parese – vatten een dans aan waarbij ze elkaar telkens weer vastpakken en loslaten. En op het omhelzen en vastklampen volgen discussies, of gekibbel.
FR Ils sont jumeaux. Vêtus à l’identique, ils se présentent sur un plateau nu. Les deux corps, l’un valide, l’autre atteint d’un handicap IMC (infirmité motrice cérébrale), entament une danse faite d’enlacements et de séparations. Ils s’étreignent, s’agrippent l’un à l’autre puis discutent ou se chamaillent.
EN They are twins. Dressed identically, they step out on a bare stage. The two bodies – one abled, the other with a neurological disorder (cerebral palsy) –launch into a dance made up of embraces and separations. They hug, cling to each other, then talk or bicker.

FR Pour toutes les productions d’opéra dans sa Grande Salle, la Monnaie prévoit un surtitrage en français, en néerlandais et en anglais. L’emplacement des écrans de surtitrage peut varier selon la scénographie, mais nous veillons à la lisibilité du texte pour le plus grand nombre de spectateurs.
