1960’s McRae, Neill (1966-1967) Neill is continuing as a qualified interim/transitional minister at the Richmond United Church, a congregation of the United Church of Canada. His local area is an immigration magnet for folks from China, so he is developing a congregation with English speaking and Chinese speaking worshiping groups, and learning something of the Chinese cultural norms in the process.

It can be truthfully said that what I learned and experienced as a “Traveling Secretary” (as we were known in those far off days), continues to directly and positively affect my work both as clergy and as a Certified Management Consultant. Sander, Eric (1969-1971) Currently, Eric works for Shaw Modualr Systems in the Engineering group. Eric and his wife Pam have two sons, Matt (34yrs) and Bryan (31yrs).

Wainwright, Bill (1969-1970) Bill has moved to Rodman Reservoir and “gone fishin’”. Bill says he would love to have anyone with a few days off join him for some of the best bass fishing in the world. Bill is proud to report that his oldest son is now a Partner in the Atlanta Law Firm of McKenna, Long & Aldridge where he specializes in Mergers & Acquisitions, Contract Law and Sports Management. The site covers Carter’s “growing up place” and his home and headquarters for the last 30 years of global humanitarian work. Jim served as the Special Assistant to President Carter and served as Chief Development Officer for the Carter Center in Atlanta, GA through 1996. Jim is also working with the former Secretaries of State and US Ambassadors to secure funds for the new US Diplomacy Center at the State Department in Washington, DC. This new building and Center will provide the general public access to the State Department and the Diplomatic history of the US from Thomas Jefferson through Secretary Clinton.

He (and the little beach town he resides) in Delaware, survived Sandy!

Joe had the opportunity in late June to serve as one of five judges for the 2012 Miss Indiana Pageant, an official State Preliminary for Miss America. The four day process was a great deal more involved than he had anticipated, but fascinating throughout. “Definitely one of life’s more random – yet interesting – experiences.”

Feature Update - GEorge Spasyk Former Lambda Chi Alpha Executive Director George Spasyk recently stopped by IHQ to share stories of the rich history of our Fraternity with staff members. On Friday, September 21st, the current staff at Lambda Chi Alpha International Headquarters was graced with a visit from former Executive Director George Spasyk, former Director of Chapter Services Frank Maez, and former Educational Leadership Consultant Gerry Reese. George shared numerous stories with the staff about the history of the headquarters building. He also discussed how the area around 8741 Founders Road has significantly changed since the building was constructed in 1973. George pointed out specific relics in the building such as the main desk in the lobby that was once used by the Grand High Zeta and spoke about their historical value and significance to Lambda Chi Alpha.

over the last few months while he continues to recover. George has continued to play an integral role as a mentor to the Lambda Chi Alpha staff. Prior to the departure of the Educational Leadership Consultants for their chapter visits over the fall term, George met with each of them and offered advice on traveling and interacting with fellow brothers.

As George was leaving he thanked each staff member for their hospitality and service to Lambda Chi Alpha. A big thank you goes out to Frank and Gerry for the assistance they offered George throughout the day. In July, George was taken to the hospital after experiencing heart issues. After a brief stay in the hospital, he was moved to Marquette Manor, a facility that provided George with around-the-clock care. George’s main goal was to regain strength through daily physical therapy and a healthy diet so he could move back into his house, a place that has offered many great memories to staff members. After a doctor’s appointment to see how he was progressing, George received favorable comments about how his health had taken a positive turn in large part to the care he received at Marquette Manor. Last month, George reached his goal and was able to move back into his house. He has a caretaker who looks over him and helps him with his daily tasks. We are all very happy about the mental and physical strength George has displayed

From the Road – ELC Nick LudwiG Senior Educational Leadership Consultant Nick Ludwig reflects on his time spent on the road. Over the last year and a half Nick has worked on three expansions, visited 55 chapters, and traveled over 30,000 miles. To a chasm, vast, and deep, and wide, Through which was flowing a sullen tide. Traveling alone has changed me. Sometimes I feel like an old man compared to some of the brothers who carry the college mentality. I’ve often gone into many situations that feel “cold and gray.” A chasm can take many forms, like a chapter that isn’t happy to see the consultant, perhaps a chapter that has fallen off course, or even a feeling of deep loneliness when travelling to new places. The old man crossed in the twilight dim; The sullen stream had no fear for him; But he turned, when safe on the other side, And built a bridge to span the tide. I felt a great deal of fear when I first started as a consultant. Since then I have crossed many bridges. I have visited 55 chapters, travelled over 30,000 miles, and even opened three colonies. These experiences have helped me build my competency to help across many situations. I like to think of each challenge as an opportunity to build a bridge for the men who haven’t even join the chapter yet. I aspired to work as an Educational Leadership Consultant throughout my time as a senior collegiate brother of ZetaAlpha Zeta at Coe College. I took the job to do my best to give back to the fraternity that I love. During my short time working as a fraternity consultant, I have learned that it is much more than a job; it is a way of life. There are very few people who can relate to a fraternity consultant, so I have become very close with my co-workers, even though they are many miles away. I often turn to one of my favorite poems when I come across a difficult situation. “The Bridge Builder,” by Will Allen Dromgoole helps me remember why I took this job to serve the fraternity that I love. An old man, going a lone highway, Came, at the evening, cold and gray,

“Old man,” said a fellow pilgrim, near, “You are wasting strength with building here; Your journey will end with the ending day; You never again will pass this way; You’ve crossed the chasm, deep and wideWhy build you this bridge at the evening tide?” Goodness, it is easy to become discouraged. Sometimes I wish I had the ability to work in an office with a regular routine, but instead I work out of fraternity houses, rest stops, student unions, coffee shops, and especially my car. It would be easy to go through the motions with the everyday tasks of the job. Real fulfillment comes from the relationships I have built with the men of the chapters, cooks, advisors, and campus professionals. The builder lifted his old gray head: “Good friend, in the path I have come,” he said,

From the Road – ELC Nick Ludwig “There followeth after me today, A youth, whose feet must pass this way. Much to the dismay of many collegiate brothers, the fraternity chapter is constantly changing. While we continue to redefine our education, update our constitution, and work to break stereotypes, we need to ensure that we constantly bring the newest members into the fold. This chasm, that has been naught to me,

To that fair-haired youth may a pitfall be. He, too, must cross in the twilight dim; Good friend, I am building this bridge for him.” Thinking of the lasting effects of my visit and the impact of fraternity brothers yet to join is one of the most encouraging aspects of the job. I always try to remember that what we do as staff, volunteers, and advisors is meant to help foster an undergraduate experience based on the lessons of the ritual of the fraternity.
