Crate Day is a celebration of the first weekend of summer; it’s about enjoying great weather, great company and the great outdoors. Last weekend, a CBD drinking ban pushed the party out towards the suburbs and as far as I’ve heard, there were no complaints. It was out of sight, out of mind for most. The 2016 event was a different story – rubbish left behind by revellers had the authorities wondering if our freedom to drink in public should be stopped. Bylaws prohibit drinking in public between 10pm and 8am and 24-hour bans have been added over Crate Day weekend as well as Christmas, New Year and other key annual events. Though this is a fair measure, it also signifies the tightening of the noose for our current drinking freedom. Many popular tourist towns in the US have seen Prohibition-style bans on drinking in public because one or two incidents or events have laid bare the negative side of excessive alcohol consumption, littering and bad behaviour. When these laws are passed, there’s no measurement of how many people have enjoyed a craft beer by the river or quietly celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on the lakefront. Queenstown has always been a special case when it comes to drinking laws and as locals, it’s one way we can leverage the ‘tourist town’ label to have a bit of fun ourselves. The issues with alcohol – no matter where you consume it – come with excess. Too much bad behaviour and littering are negative outcomes of any large gathering, but when there’s alcohol involved, it puts Queenstown’s bylaws in the spotlight. Events like Crate Day aren’t commercialised, religious or political – anyone can enjoy a few spontaneous ‘beersies on the beach’. It’s a celebration of summer and there’s no better place to appreciate long, hot, summer days than on Queenstown’s beautiful lakefront. It’d be a shame if fears about rubbish and poor behaviour put an end to an age-old pastime. We shouldn’t need to be patronised with nanny-sate bylaws. With a long, hot summer predicted, I’m sure there’ll be plenty more opportunities to enjoy a local wine or craft beer al fresco. If we show we can behave ourselves, there’s no reason that spontaneous outdoor drinking can’t be a happy part of Queenstown’s future for many years to come. So, when you relax with a drink in Queenstown this summer, say “cheers” to our bylaws and remember to take your litter and bad behaviour home – don’t leave it on the lakefront.

It’s late on Friday, its getting close to a public holiday, it must be time for the QLDC to try and sneak in a surprise gift on the ratepayers. On this occasion its a proposal for Ngai Tahu to be handed Crate Blanche, the right to develop and operate a Hot pool and Spa complex on the Lakeview site. I suppose the QLDC would have us believe that we the muggins ratepayers have short memories, but didn’t Ngai Tahu walk from exactly the same idea a year or so ago saying it wasn’t viable? I for one would like to know whats changed to perk up Ngai Tahu’s interest? Have for example Ngai Tahu been offered any sweeteners to have another go and if so by whom and on what basis? It also comes to mind that when the council unanimously voted to release the Lakeview site to commercial use. Ostentatiously it was to obtain maxim value by monetising and seek expressions of interest accordingly. By not opening to advertised expressions of interest and a tender process to what appears to have been a preconceived determination by the QLDC to have a Hot pool
and Spa complex as the cornerstone for the Lakeview site. The question then arises why not? That council could not leverage better terms by opening it up to the wider markert. Are Ngai Tahu such NZ or world leaders as Hot pool and Spa operators and management that no other options or operators come to mind? Despite asking the public to submit on the proposal, it appears the council are not prepared to release the proposed returns from such a long term lease arrangement, how is it possible then or the ratepayers to judge that the council are not signing away another set of the crown jewels on yet another sweetheart deal? Should we be worried, indeed we should, remember QLDC is a council that has historically fallen flat on its face whenever it’s been tempted to enter into the realms of commercial realism.

Response To Last Week’s Editorial I have lived in Queenstown now for six years amid a lot of changes and myself gave up teaching after being expected to work one hour a day at a local school. I voted for this Government and did not appreciate your editorial. I am a Landlord, and each set of tenants in the last three years have left town for the following reasons: •
Being told they had fulltime work in the winter and were only given three hours a week

Worked for a construction relieving company and could not secure fulltime work
•
Laid off in the winter as there was no snow.
and I do not see why special immigration dispensation as Winston Peter said should be given to people to boil an egg. Chefs who have been in this town make only $19 per hour after five years; and I wonder where this meanness comes from. Sometimes I think we were founded on capitalism, but thank god for the first Labour Government who built houses for the poor. I am astounded that we have not got a proper hospital and that Dunedin Hospital was going to be privately funded under the last Government, and one third of our kids never made it to school, as insufficient funding never assured they ever got there.
In the last three years all tenants have left Queenstown discouraged and angry at not being able to make a living here.
40% of my rates goes into advertising this town and I am over it. Why should I subsidise the tourism sector that pay its staff low wages? So pay more or suffer the 150 staff shortages, this town has simply got a bad name.
I tell them when they arrive who not to work for hoping they get good jobs. However, the minimum wage is a joke

FACEBOOK/WEBSITE COMMENTS Editorial 629 It’s interesting and quite funny if I’m honest that you call Queenstown a community in some bid to take illogical pot shots at the new government. If you call a community a place where people have to submit themselves to extremely low wages, share rooms at over $200 and have places that are occupied by over 20 people (forgetting about all the heath and wellbeing issues.) I mean the list goes on - how badly migrant workers are exploited, and all your worried about is that access to this labour may reduce therefore make you have to run a better or altered business model. And then seemed surprised why we’ve had a change of government. Enjoy the next 3 years and instead of constantly complaining, how about reflecting on what it means to live in a ‘community’.
Bewildered You can’t blame immigration. Blame the hospitality industry, pay peanuts get monkeys. We have the best chefs and cooks in the world from here but they can’t afford to live here and feed their families while they’re feeding all our visitors for bottom dollar. One of our cleaners earns more than the head chef at most top restaurants. Disgusting. Pay some decent money and attract some decent kiwis. So many young people in the file in Southland and Otago. Give them some skills and get them up here. You can get them from everywhere in the world but our own backyard. Do something instead if just moaning.
