I probably shouldn’t encourage whinging. Queenstown is pretty good at it already. But for once, our collective whinging can be put to good use. This week, the QLDC and ORC’s new $2 bus system, the Orbus, comes into play and to get it right, they need our feedback. The system has been put into place in a “challenging” time frame, so there’s bound to be routes, schedules and transfers that don’t work at first. Until the 26th November, the GoCards (usually $5) and the bus fares are free, so this week is the best time to hop on a bus, take notes and send it to the QLDC or ORC (the easiest way is probably on their Facebook page - @OrbusQT). There’s also a nifty app, called Choice Queenstown, which works as a route planner, showing live updates on the whereabouts of buses. After the 26th, bus fares are $2 a pop with a GoCard. This ‘tap and go’ sort of system has been popular in other parts of the world for many years. You’ll find an Oyster card in the pockets of most Londoners and it’s near impossible to travel Tokyo without hopping on a public train. Though Queenstown is nowhere near as big as a city, transport is inherently linked to urban development and anyone living locally for the last five years will have noticed a lot of urban development going on around the Wakatipu Basin.

Public transport is essential for the success of a growing community because it connects us, it enables easy access between suburbs and centres and it’s all-inclusive. Though the Orbus system won’t be immediately convenient for everyone, there’ll be many families and individuals who will rely on it. A $2 bus system will help to reduce living costs; people on low incomes, young and elderly people and people with disabilities typically benefit the most from inexpensive public transport. Research has shown that public transport increases productivity by up to 23% and even those not using buses benefit – there’ll be less congestion on the road and more parking available. Yes, those parking spaces will be slightly more expensive, but in a world where time is money, it might just work out cheaper than getting stuck in traffic (last weekend’s marathon madness being a prime example).

Queenstown’s drink driving statistics might dip too – the Orbus runs until after midnight, so we can enjoy few cheeky after-work pints this summer. The only catch is that this is a use-it-or-lose-it system. We need to give the buses a chance and for once, we need to whinge about it. With a bit of constructive criticism and positive feedback, we’ll soon have a public bus system that really works well for the community it serves.

Still Ski Season Parking In Town So throughout the CBD in the 30 minute parking zone, parking was reduced to 15 minutes between 3pm and 6pm so “tourists have somewhere to stop when they drop off their rental ski gear”. I know that because that is what a council parking person wrote to me when I complained about a parking ticket. So now that it’s past ski season why is the 15 minute limit still there? And speaking of CBD parking since it’s about to get impossible to park anywhere when the $2 bus starts - last year I whinged about commercial businesses parking kayak trailers and vans down near the Fernhill “One Mile” roundabout for months on end - in contravention to several bylaws.
They moved on following the councils response they would investigate. I drove around looking for a park within walking distance of town the other day and I see they are back again - hogging a park all summer again by the looks of it. Do parking wardens ever go down there to check or do they just hang about in town waiting for people to park for 20 minutes in what is usually a 30 minute zone so they can issue a ticket?

Re: Remarkables Park Parking. What a load of old nonsense Remarkables Park! There are not lots of clear signs. There are tiny signs on the central lamp posts only! Tiny. No big writing alerting you to a possible issue or parking time limit. Tiny. So if you park near the pharmacy or old Warehouse you will NEVER see them. If there are so many ‘over stayers’ then make it a 6 or 8 hour limit. Not just 3. Then the parking guys only need to make 1 chalk run per day. But I don’t believe you. Sounds like a money generating scheme to cover some of the lost rent from all the businesses leaving. And why do you even bother? Because it’s so quiet there’s hardly anyone there anyway and loads of free parking spaces!!

While our parking wardens do actively patrol the Queenstown area, they can’t be everywhere at once. If you notice someone parking somewhere

We are accepting submissions of editorial from support advertisers however editorial submissions will be used at the discretion of our editor and are not guaranteed to be included. ELECTRICIAN The Maintenance Team has overall responsibility for the repairs and maintenance of the company's buildings (including the hotel, a lodge, an airport and staff accommodation) and equipment. This is a varied role where no one day is the same as the day before. If you are looking for variety and challenge in one of New Zealand's most iconic locations then this role may be just what you are looking for. The Electrician works with other members of the Maintenance team and although has an electrical background, will be required to undertake wider engineering duties. Key Activities:
• Be involved in the day to day electrical upkeep of all hotel property and equipment • Undertake general engineering/maintenance duties in other trades • Able to assist and repair faults after hours • Demonstrate an understanding of both Health & Safety (including accident reporting procedures) and emergency procedures • Undertake any additional duties or responsibilities as required by the Chief Engineer, Assistant Chief Engineer or Management.
Skills and Qualifications:
• NZ Electrician Registration is preferred however international qualifications will be taken into account • Previous experience working in a hotel environment or in other trades is also advantageous • A clean and full drivers licence • Great communication skills and the ability to work in a small team in a close knit environment
