“Culture” - it’s a word that means different things to different people, and sometimes more than one thing all at once. We might imagine an audience in tuxedos and gowns, listening to the proverbial ‘fat lady’ sing; a museum’s displays of objects and artefacts, walls hung with canvas; or a street performer with a violin, a book of poetry, or even a unicycle and fistful of juggler’s clubs. Culture can refer to a dizzyingly diverse array of activities and objects because culture isn’t defined by the activity, but by the intent. And that intent is to connect: To connect people with their context, with their wider community, and with each other. Our town is built on these connections, not just connections within our own communities as all towns are, but also the connection between host and guest which drives our economy. So it’s essential for us to continue to develop and improve the cultural offerings with which we forge these connections. We are, and we insist we are, a world class destination - with that comes a responsibility to ensure our cultural offerings impress, even when our guests compare them with experiences they’ve had around the world. Offerings like JazzFest, a mainstay on Queenstown’s cultural calendar. Labour Weekend marks the 40th Queenstown Jazz Festival and, for the Trust, our 40th birthday is an opportune time to celebrate our past and reimagine our future.

Over its four decades, JazzFest has grown from humble beginnings to become one of the region’s most popular music events, hosting musicians from throughout the country and around the globe. As a part of Queenstown’s overall cultural landscape, JazzFest is playing its part, continuing to develop and improve the ways in which we connect. But we can only play one part in this ensemble, we welcome all players to the stage. This year we welcome Catalyst and the University of Otago Humanities Division into the weekend’s program. Together they add MindJam, ‘jam sessions for the mind’ that offer us another way of connecting, as we gather together to share ideas and be inspired by each other’s thoughts and opinions. MindJam exemplifies the sort of collaboration we need in order to enhance Queenstown’s cultural offerings. As a community, we must continue to recognise the essential role culture and the arts play in both our society and our economy, as well as Queenstown’s extraordinary potential to develop further still. We need to support the events we do have - if nothing else simply by attending and participating - and we need to walk an aspirational pathway as we continue to paint our cultural landscape, improving existing cultural offerings and develop new ones. We need to realise that when we declare ourselves to be world class, the world is here, and they can see whether we’re delivering. JazzFest aims to deliver a weekend to relish, paving the way for the next 40 years.

I note from a newsletter I recently received from one of the towns real estate agents that Central and surrounding Queenstown are to be blessed with upwards of 800 plus new hotel rooms, apartments and any number of other commercial developments in the next few years.
Also how many on-site car parks will the QLDC consider suitable for its new proposed office building in Stanley Street, considering that the building will be hosting upwards of 350 staff, auxiliary organisations and visitors, many of whom are elderly ratepayers who will obviously need car parking close by.
Obviously, this is going to put a further strain on our already collapsing infrastructure and especially parking.

The idea is that we continue to encourage and invest in shared parking infrastructure located on the edge of town, invest in high quality public transport and improving walking and cycling connections. The design and location of a new Council building is not yet confirmed, however it will be considered in the same way as any other major business looking to locate in the town centre. Suitable access for the community will be a critical consideration.
Bring Back The Old Skool Winter Festival! We travelled to be a part of it for several years but will no longer bother, this year was a terrible disappointment. In order to pad out the events and fill in the days, a few more family style events could have been created at little cost in order to sustain the two week festival.

Response from QT Winter Festival Thank you for your feedback and we are sorry to hear you were a little disappointed. Festival endeavour’s to create a programme that entertains a range of visitors and locals. 2017 was the first year as a four day festival rather than ten days, which has received positive feedback. This also meant some changes to the programme. Both the QLDC and some of the CBD property owners should hang their heads in shame at the poor state of some of their buildings and quality of retail fit outs. After years of doing their best to make it near impossible to get a car park and providing an overpriced and mismatched retail offering and a evening experience were you are surrounded by yobbos and drunks. Now we the ratepayers at the insistence of the big end of town with the assittance of their hand maidens the QLDC are asked to tamely hop on a bus and return to supposedly revitalised CBD, both of which have been ironically subsidised by the ratepayers who doubt are delighted to helping to further enrich those who have done little to deserve such support.
Smash Place It’s ironic that we have a town centre manager whose wages are in effect paid by the ratepayer, who delights in telling all and sundary how it is and should be and that we are a bunch of woosers if we don’t agree with his grandiose plans. Yet the CDB is looking dirty and unkempt with little or no apparent effort to provide an interesting shoping experience, is anyone holding him to account? At least in past we had a Mayor Cooper and his wife who made an hands on effort to spruce the CBD and the mall up with hanging flower baskets etc and a police sergeant Malone who put the would be thugs in their place. No fancy muilti millon plans and overpriced mangers, just some plain roll up your sleeves and get it done. Oh for the good old days.
