Here come the holidays! This is the last regular issue of the Lakes Weekly for 2022 and I’m sure like me you’re ready for a decent break and some de-stress time over the holiday season. Our team and Directors would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. It’s been another long and gruelling one, especially if you’ve been working multiple shifts and are short staffed, as is the case with most businesses. However, on the bright side it’s wonderful to see the town bustling again. Summer is the time when Queenstown and Wanaka’s population swells many times over, with friends and family, holiday home owners, and domestic and international tourists visiting. No wonder the Full House sign went up weeks ago. It reminds you how great this place is and why everyone wants to come here. The long summer days, with the gorgeous evening light, are such a magic time to share with loved ones and friends and enjoy everything the region has to offer. And although Covid is never far away, this year ‘it is what it is’ and as a result our fabulous events will go ahead. NYE will be huge after being cancelled last year and all the summer events are back, plus some new ones.
The team from the Lakes Weekly wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas. From left to right. Ferg Spary, Bethany Rogers, Lana Yang, Patricia Becker, Kylee Evans, Cat Mercer, Kendalle McLeod, Ana Salvi, David Gibbs, Jess Allen, Paul Taylor and in the front Scott Stevens
Every Christmas is a stumble to finish line but for 2022 it seems especially true. I am not there yet and with less than a week left, it’s going to be another mad scramble, but we always make it one way or another. I am certainly physically and mentally shattered and ready to take it that little bit easier. I’m looking forward to relaxing with friends and family. Not everyone is getting a break, however. The visitor and hospo businesses are gearing up to be slammed and our selfless emergency services will be ready to meet the demand this time of year brings. Many are volunteers. If you are one of them, thank you, from all of us. You make the visitor experience both safe and one to remember.

If you are visiting, you will notice that every business has a sign out front looking for staff, so if it’s a wait for service, please bear with the teams. They are working as fast as they can to get to you.

From our family at Queenstown Media Group to yours, have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We will have our holiday edition out next week, if you are on holiday and looking for inspiration. We’ll be back with our first regular issue on 9 January, 2023.
