Queenstown is the fastest growing part of New Zealand, but absurdly we don’t have a fit-for-purpose hospital to service the area. There are 40,000 residents across Queenstown Lakes and another 21,000 people that live in neighbouring Central Otago. On peak days in summer, when visitors are in the mix, there are also another 80,000 visitors in Queenstown Lakes. How dangerous is it that we don’t have a fit-for-purpose hospital here? The current Lakes District Hospital in Frankton has no surgical facilities. In emergencies, the only realistic option is a chopper to Invercargill or Dunedin. How can it be that even places with a smaller population like Greymouth get a proper hospital? They have similar geographical isolation to Queenstown and their hospital services only 30,000 people. There is no excuse for a lack of meaningful action to provide a new hospital in this rapidly growing part of the world. There are rumours of a private hospital in Queenstown with the DHB renting theatre space – this simply won’t do. It won’t help with non-elective emergency surgery after an accident or a more complicated birth entailing an unexpected caesarean. It is all secret squirrels. I was at a public meeting recently on the future of Frankton and they can’t even confirm precise locations of medical services in the plan because the DHB refuses to engage with the council. I am sick of us being treated like fools by the DHB. The madness has to stop and the community needs to be heard. These frustrations have compelled me to stand in the Southern District Health Board elections. I want to ensure that Queenstown has a voice. My day job as an economist means I am an expert in guiding decisions supported by hard data and facts. Health service provision can’t be something dictated by managerial convenience, instead it must be based on real evidence about real people and their wellbeing. You can’t hide from facts such as there being 50% more babies in total born to mothers from Queenstown and rural Southland than mothers from Invercargill. From a Queenstown perspective, my first step if elected will be to demand that the DHB holds an immediate public briefing to explain where they are at with plans for a new Queenstown hospital. We must transparently understand the process and what steps and timelines are ahead of us. Targets must then be set in consultation with the local community so that we can hold the DHB to account. This must include real actions, like putting forward a business case to central government asking for an allocation in the budget for investment in a fit-for-purpose Queenstown hospital. This government has made a name of itself with wellbeing – so what better investment in wellbeing than providing healthcare to a fast-growing area that has traditionally been neglected. As a first-time candidate for the Southern DHB, I do not carry the baggage which members of the sacked 2013 board seeking re-election may have. I come to this election with a fresh face and optimism that together we can improve the health and wellbeing of people in our beautiful slice of paradise. Let’s make health happen. EXPLORE YOUR WAY TO WELLBEING Mental Health Awareness Week was last week and it sliped by without much attention. One in five of us will experience a mental illness each year and pretty much all of us will recover and continue to live fulfilling lives, however we need to take good care of our mental wellbeing. Mental Health is an issue that affects us all and it’s especially prevalent in Queenstown with our high cost of living and low wage environment. We also welcome many new residents each year and Queenstown can feel like a very lonely place as it’s not easy to feel connected. The Lakes Weekly wants to contribute to the conversation around mental health and explore some of the experiences, actions and solutions that individuals, organisations, industries and the broader community are using to deal with Mental Health. First up - what is mental health? Mental Health refers to a wide range of mood, thinking and behavour which includes depression, anxiety, eating and drinking disorders and addictive behavour. It’s sometimes a short term and time to time and for others longer term. A concern can turn to illness when it becomes a frequent stress, makes you miserable and affects how you would normally function at school, work and in your relationship. We aren’t experts but we are here to share experiences and continue the conversation and this week we are sharing some individuals who are sharing their story and how they personally deal with low moments.
One Step Is All It Takes Profile: Lucy Pankhurst Origin: Christchurch (Lives in Queenstown) Occupation: Solicitor at Todd & Walker Law Firm Spare Time: Queenstown representative for One Step One Step is a mental health community across the globe (with several communities based here in New Zealand) tackling issues of depression and anxiety through the simple act of running. Founded by Lydia O’Donnell and Richie Hardcore (off the back of the One Wave surfing organization), it is a way for people to connect to one another, have real conversations about mental health and create a sense of purpose in themselves. Depression and anxiety can affect anyone, and mental health is unfortunately a forever growing issue. The fast pace society which we tend to live in, can create an imbalance and be detrimental to our mental health. People need people, and people need a purpose. Exercise and community give you just that and One Step aims to help those in need. One step is open to all abilities or walkers, joggers and runners. Locally here in Queenstown, One Step takes place every Wednesday morning at 7am. The group meets at the Queenstown Gardens car park by the tennis courts and jogs, walks or runs together. The aim of One Step is to encourage people to be part of a community that gives you back as much as you give them!

I do comedy about my mental health, my depression and anxiety, my experience around suicide and stuff. Going to see Councillors and mental hospitals. I guess I do it, for me personally, to raise awareness about depression. People sing about it or they talk serious about it but I wanna add my own sorta twist on it. There’s comedy in this! For some people making fun of depression is way more helpful than hearing someone go up and say ‘oh depressions really bad isn’t it’. Comedy is a very therapeutic thing for me - when my brother passed away, I had starting watching comedy around that time... tryna to keep my mind off things. When I started to do comedy around depression that was another form of therapy because it helped me understand my depression more. I feel like I’m still living with it, I still have my down days but I’m at that stage where I’m I know how to cope with it a bit easier than when I first got it.

Listening will achieve more than vilifying
I feel some important points need to be made here. Whichever ‘side’ you are on in this debate. This culture of insulting the other ‘side’ is counter productive and only serves to alienate people. Leading to an entrenchment of their position. When has calling someone an ‘idiot’, ‘get a life’, ‘you’re a sheeple’, ‘join the human race’, ‘you’re a f...wit/d...head’ etc EVER won a discussion or argument ? Seriously? In the history of time when have insults and vicious verbal/ written attacks ever won an argument? Please remember on both sides of this are parents who love their children and want to protect them and do the best for their health and well-being. I sit in the middle on this issue as, having done extensive research on both sides, there are compelling arguments for both opinions. Contrary to what I see written on social media, all the parents I have met or read about who are cautious or anti vax, are not stupid or ill informed. They do not think the earth is flat, wear tin foil on their heads etc They have either had or know a child who has had a bad reaction to a vaccine. Or they have read articles on some concerning facts which are not widely covered in the media.
If you wish to convert someone from a point of view, you need to know where they are coming from and why they hold that view. I assure you it’s not because they are stupid or following the crowd. I suggest you research what the anti vax side are saying. There are a surprising number of Drs expressing concerns and some very smart lawyers etc questioning the standard view. Look up Robert Kennedy Junior’s opinions on this. He’s a very clever lawyer who could be doing much easier, more financially rewarding and less stressful work. But, chooses to challenge the drug companies on their safety record and known history of criminal activity in all other areas of their pharmaceuticals. Few realise that even in America where litigation is widespread, you cannot sue the drug companies for any side effects from vaccines. They are totally immune from prosecution. Once you see where the ‘other side’ are coming from you can have a better conversation. Let’s stop this Witch hunt and demonisation of concerned parents who’s only crime is not agreeing with you. Thank you. The other side.
RE: Run, rabbit, run free! Last week’s “whinge winner” made sense. The ORC reply (landowners are required to control them on their own properties) was disingenuous. The council and the conservation department own a lot of land, yet neither organisation has a budget for rabbit control.
Their surplus rabbits move onto private land. Perhaps if ORC weren’t so afraid of council and the Department of conservation, we’d have fewer of these pests. Failing like Elmer Fudd with Bugs Bunny
TIMBER!!! The international price for log timber has dropped over 25 percent in the last 6 months. Now the financial wizards of the QLDC and their cohorts have decided that now is the perfect time to mill the logs.... right at the bottom of the slump. AND
on top of that, the trees are not ready maturity wise for another 6 to 8 years. With financial decisions like this howler, no wonder the place is always short of money for real worthwhile projects. Mr Greeny

The skill level classification of a role is determined by the level of remuneration on offer for the role (calculated on the basis of payment per hour and specified in Immigration policy) as well as in some cases, a comparison of the tasks and responsibilities of the role against those set out in the corresponding description of the role in the Australia and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations register (ANZSCO). Taken in combination, these two factors will then determine whether the role is classified as lower-skilled, mid-skilled or highly-skilled. This skill level classification is then used to determine the terms and conditions of the work visa issued including the overall duration of the visa, the maximum number of visas permitted for that role and the ability of the visa applicant to sponsor dependents. It is important for any visa applicant to obtain advice prior to progressing an application under this visa category in order to ensure that the visa that is ultimately issued will meet the needs of the applicant, their dependents and their employer. QUEENSTOWNS LOCAL COMPUTER MAINTENANCE, REPAIR AND LESSON EXPERT Folks in Queenstown can be rightfully proud of their smarts. At times shown by true technology leadership - building NZ’s first hydroelectric plant at Bullendale in 1886 and the invention of the Hamilton jet - through to simply having the smarts to successfully work out how to live here. Together we face more than a few challenges: Growth, climate change, over tourism. We must put our smarts to work on these challenges too. Globally, there’s a growing suite of “smart city” technologies. Technologies that help cities deal with the challenge of sustainably increasing quality of life in the face of burgeoning populations and declining resources: Better transport networks, enhanced flood protection, improved energy efficiencies- the list goes on. We’re used to cities getting all the attention, but in Queenstown’s case, both the opportunity and need are for a slightly different focus - “smart resort” technologies - to empower comparatively small towns, like ours, deal with hugely disproportionate visitor numbers (like ours!). Not merely ‘deal with’, but fundamentally improve the experience of living and visiting, while reducing environmental impact and helping us meet our climate challenge. Developing and deploying smart resort technologies will be critical to ensure best results for community wellbeing and value for money at the same time. Smart resort technologies needn’t be limited to infrastructure but can extend to any technology especially relevant to tourism. For example, the airport noise boundary and their perspective that not being allowed to make more noise will stifle growth. I find it interesting that the airport will assume a 300% increase in demand over the next 30 years - and for now let’s run with that figure - but have assumed a 0% improvement in aircraft technology! Over the last 30 years, jet aircraft have reduced their sound output by an average of 50% per decade. If that trend stays constant, in 30 years they’d be 400% quieter than today. That could mean, in 30 years time, the airport meeting its entire 300% projected demand simply by landing quieter aircraft? In fact that trend isn’t staying constant, it’s increasing. Right now, NASA is working with technologies offering a 70% reduction in airframe noise, while engine manufacturers are developing and deploying jets with technologies that offer up to 75% noise reduction. And that’s right now, we’re not even thinking about the next technology, and the next, and the next after that, which in 30 year’s time will be the new normal. In that scenario the airport could fully meet its 300% projected demand, not with the same, but a reduced noise boundary? Alone, smart resort technologies won’t solve our over tourism or climate challenges, but they can and must make a critical contribution.

CBD by Miranda Spary What a week of ups and downs and chaos... It started with a phone call saying someone was demolishing the little pink Summers Cottage opposite the Arrowtown Fire Station. After thirty years of owning it, and almost as many trying to work out ways of using it and restoring it, my parents FINALLY got permission to rebuild it as long as the original stone front facade was retained. They offered the local historical societies the chance to take some of the old fittings and fixtures but one of the societies was a little quick off the mark and had gone in before the building was ready for ANYTHING to be taken out. Even the roof had been taken off! Anyway, our fabulous builder has managed to secure the front facade so that from the street, it will eventually look pretty much as it always has. Phew… Arrowtown is so beautiful and I do want it hanging on to its original character as much as possible - that’s not to say I don’t want anything new - I definitely wouldn’t want to be living in the Arrowtown we moved to in 1970 when there were no cafes, no cinema, no walking trails and nobody EVER biked. But I did look down at Millbrook with all those enormous new houses - talk about Fifty Shades of Grey …or should that be Fifty Sheds of Grey? It’s very grim looking. With so many of us living longer and the birth rate falling dramatically, who is actually going to live in all those big places in 20 years time? I guess by then there won’t be any concern about affordable housing with so few young families and all of us oldies wanting smaller and smaller dwellings.
A propos of oldies, it’s been a great week of catching up with loads of very old faces - Philippa Archibald held a huge spring blossom party in her garden on a night that snow was forecast. Luckily the snow didn’t happen but we would have been very chilly if she hadn’t had the Topp Twins there to get everyone up and dancing in super quick time. We all had to dress in pink and pink seems to make people behave in VERY frivolous ways. Thanks for a fabulous night, Philippa! The next night was the real Old Queenstowners night - everyone who was living here before 1990 was invited to a knees up in the Memorial Hall - there were nearly 500 people there and Peter Doyle made four of the surviving QLDC mayors get up on stage to form a choir and sing Happy Birthday to current mayor Jim Boult. It wasn’t awfully tuneful, but it was very funny. People brought all sorts of memorabilia and photos - it was a total blast from the past and with everyone wearing nametags, it was deliciously easy to remember who we all were - I absolutely LOVE nametags. Must be an age thing… and on the subject of age things, if you are under 50 PLEASE vote in the council elections - really and truly, it is so important to have the voice of younger people in elections. You youngies are way smarter about the world than we will ever be, and if you don’t make choices about the district now, a lot of things you might not want could happen.

Saturday was Anita Graf’s funeral - what a huge turnout at Moonlight Stables - Anita was in my class at Arrowtown Primary School and lots of Scott Powell’s old students were there to say goodbye to a very fab bird. This superkeen skier who’d taught at Coronet, worked at the bungy bridge, brought up her four daughters here and been a nurse had touched practically everyone in the Wakatipu’s life in one way or another and even though it was such a sad occasion, there was a huge amount of laughter at the stories and memories everyone had. As people who know me know, I’m not the sort of person who wins many prizes, so I’m a tiny bit thrilled to have got second prize in the yellow daffodil class at the Arrowtown Flower Show. If anyone wants to have a look at my certificate, do please get in touch. Not that I’m boasting about it, or anything.

Spring Challenge
by Casey Lucas-Quiad
The 2019 Spring Challenge adventure race kicked off last weekend beneath a big blue Central Otago sky dotted with just enough cloud to give the racers some relief from the sun. Held in Cromwell this year, the event is the brainchild of adventure racing dynamos Nathan and Jodie Fa’avae, offering one race up north and one down south that cater to up to 450 3-woman racing teams. The race has become a beloved addition to the adventure racing calendar for many Queenstown athletes, combining rafting, mountain biking, hiking, and navigation. The race is broken down into three categories so that racers of all fitness and commitment levels can compete: 9 hour, 6 hour, and 3 hour. Taking the podium for the 9 Hour Challenge were teams XXX (triple X) in first place followed by team Unicorn Dust in second. The Mountain Sloths captured third. For the 6 Hour Challenge, Team GLT took the gold while super veteran team Crazy, Mad, and Fast took second place and team Better Late Than Pregnant rounded out the podium in third. The 3 Hour Challenge first prize went to school team The Better Sisters while Taapaw captured second and Shopaholics took third. Participating teams don’t find out the course location until the Friday of the race weekend, and the four hundred hectares of land chosen just outside Cromwell offer a lot of challenge in the landscape, particularly on the mountain biking portion.
“Some years ago, we did a rogaine event at this station, and we knew there was a possible Spring Challenge course latent in the landscape, awaiting discovery. We never intended for so much of the course to be on the station, but the more we explored it, the more we wanted to include it,” organiser Nathan Fa’avae said via press release. So as local racers pack down their rafts and rack up their bikes, they can now wonder what’s in store for the 2020 course, which has been held as far afield as Geraldine and as close to home as Gibbston Valley in past years.

A Business Competition That Teaches Entrepreneurship Author: Josie Debenham A global startup event, Startup Weekend, returns to Queenstown after a 5-year hiatus on 18 - 20 October at the Queenstown Memorial, The international entrepreneurship event is regarded as one of the best platforms to learn how to launch a business doing so in a fast-paced, competitive 54-hour weekend. Startup Weekend is a programme of Techstars, one of the world’s most recognized startup organisations. “We’re excited to get this event back into the District,” said James Burnes, CEO of Startup Queenstown Lakes. “For anyone tinkering with a new idea - and those who want to learn to think and act like a startup, there is no better place to hone your skills.” WHAT TO EXPECT Kicking off after work on Friday evening, participants are immersed in an ideal environment for launching an idea. A group of business mentors and trained facilitators help participants use a variety of tools and approaches to go from idea to business. Mentors for this year’s event include local business executives Saska van der Geest, Katherine Schuitemaker, Kieran Gardiner, and Wulf Sölter among others. Participants vary in age and business experience - from CEOs to uni students - and will experience the highs, lows, fun, and pressure that makeup life at a startup. LEARNING IN A COMPETITIVE ENVIRONMENT For most, learning the ins and outs of starting a business comes through several terms in uni, years working inside a business, or just trial and error. And in all these options - key lessons are often missed that could make the difference between success and failure. “This is real-world learning,” said Burnes. “By participating in Startup Weekend, individuals can learn winning strategies to validate an idea, fail fast, pivot quickly, and develop a strong business model while learning from peers and mentors in a supportive, fun environment.” Local companies are encouraged to identify a member of their team to send to the event to learn these skills - and bring back lessons to share with the remainder of the company. “It’s incredible the energy that participants leave with. Chris Barnhart, marketing manager at World Bar and Yonder, agreed. “I found a new level of confidence at my first Startup Weekend - and realized I was capable of so much more than I had previously imagined.”

LEGEND OF THE WEEK Name: Peter "Pistol" Gaudin What’s your role and how did you get into your position? During the day I'm a manager and I ended up here because Tardis closed. How long in QT and why did you choose to live here? Been here just over 19 years, I needed to get out of Dunedin. Recommended must-do activity in and around QT? Frisbee golf and lawn bowls! What's your favorite place to eat? Tanoshi, only because it used to be Tardis. If you were stranded in Queenstown and you could have only 1 item, what would it be and why? Undies, it's not very appropriate to be walking around naked all the time. How would someone get your special attention? With a good sense of humour! What has been your best/worst date? I've never been on a date. Who is your inspiration? Why? Chief at Lone Star, he taught me about paying attention to detail. What's the most interesting thing you've read, seen or learned in the past week? Don't buy kebas late at night when you're drunk. You'll regret it in the morning. What's the best bad decision you ever made? "One more shot please" What's on your bucket list? I want to visit every state in the States. Also follow lightning! If you were an animal, what would you be and why? A lion, I like their pride plus I'm a leo myself. What is the first thing you notice about a person? Their vibe. What is something you like to do that your mates would probably consider ‘’weird’’ if they knew? 'The repeater' What is your favourite season and why? Spring, it sounds energetic What did you always wanted to try but never found the courage to do? Ask a girl out on a date. What slang or trend makes you feel old? Me still working in hospo... What’s your best piece of advice? Be nice to your mom!

LAKES WEEKLY BULLETIN
Arts+Culture by guest writer Miranda Spary
What’s Happening Bannockburn Hurry down to Bannockburn this week - there’s a host of great shows and exhibits on at the ACROSS THE BRIDGE festival. And wine... what more could you want?
OK now? Honestly, the Wakatipu Basin keeps getting better and better with all these wonderful newbies moving to the area, sharing their languages and passions and different ways of seeing life. One of them is Australian Michael Nock. He has set up an artist in residence programme at a property he owns in Lower Shotover Road. Artists from all over the world can come and spend time here creating works which benefit from putting their artistic background to work in our beautiful, inspirational landscape. He’s very keen on this idea of cross pollination between cultures - not surprising given what a man of the whole world he is. His great aunt Lucy made him love painting and he loved it so much he wanted to study formally when he left school. Unfortunately (or so it seemed at the time) his father and grandfather were dead against it. Instead he studied finance and ended up in the stockbroking and investment banking world. That led him to Hong Kong where he bought some real estate and formed a joint venture with the now publicly listed Man Group plc. When he sold his share in the jv company he decided to revisit the idea of pursuing his dream to become an artist. The sale proceeds gave him a useful nest egg and at age 35, he moved to LA to study at the Otis Parson School of Art and later at the Californian Institute of Arts. The dean of the experimental animation department invited him to join the programme and he did so, graduating with a master of fine art majoring in experimental animation. His passion was visual music - look it up online - it’s quite mesmerising. While studying in LA, his two daughters were born and once he graduated, he headed back to Hong Kong, initially to work for a large Chinese family group. In 1999 he started his own hedge fund which he ran until he sold out to his management team in 2009. The GFC caused him to consider a number of life priorities and he decided he’d like to live in a smaller community with a degree of self-sufficiency. He’d loved Queenstown since his student skiing days here, and when his daughter Lucy finished school, he brought her to New Zealand for a good look around and felt that he had found here, the place he would belong. He’s doing more and more painting and less collecting these days, but with his huge art collection which is spread all over the world, he’s thinking of setting up an art museum here and giving something back to the community. He loves hanging out with artists and his residency programme means he can invite many of his favourites to come and do just that. Each one of them is asked to donate a piece of art to the collection and already it’s a very exciting mix and range of work. Lucky lucky us!!!
