To laugh or not to laugh. That is the question. It’s been said that talking about humour is like dissecting a frog, in that few people are interested and the frog dies. Tragedy and comedy are also close partners. Tragedy is when you cut your finger and comedy is when your older brother cuts his! It appears that we often laugh to show that we are intelligent, as we’ve understood the joke, or because something bad didn’t happen to us. The word ‘comedy’ derives from the Ancient Greek word ‘komoidia’ which relates to anything that intends to cause us to laugh. The comic poets of Ancient Greece used political satire to influence the public opinion of voters. There are also so many different forms of comedy such as slapstick, innuendo, farce, parody, pathos, satire, wordplay, romantic comedy, sarcasm, irony, self-deprecation and black comedy to name a few. Commedia dell’arte (The Comedy of Art) was an improvised kind of popular comedy in Italian theatres in 16th to 18th Century. It is a traditional form of comedy that has a script but also improvised segments. There is often a struggle between young lovers to overcome problems that often result from the interference of elders. There is also often a ‘clever’ servant, frequent misunderstandings and mistaken identities. It also has stock stereotypical characters many of whom can be seen today in many comic characters such Mr Burns in The Simpsons or Basil in Fawlty Towers (Pantalone), Rene in Allo! Allo! or Manuel (Arlecchino). There is a lot of physical comedy which many actors such as Laurel and Hardy, Charlie Chaplin and Mr Bean have drawn on. It also employs many techniques on working an audience that stand-up comedians use today. One of the most famous examples of commedia dell’arte is a play called A Servant of Two Masters written by Carlo Goldoni in 1746. This play uses so many of the examples of comedy mentioned above. This original play was adapted by Richard Bean and reset in the underworld of 1963 Brighton, England. It is called One Man, Two Guvnors and was first performed in the West-End in 2011, then Broadway in 2013 and has won many awards and wide critical acclaim. Now, it’s your chance to see it here in the Queenstown Lakes region. One Man, Two Guvnors is being performed by Remarkable Theatre 12th – 21st September at Arrowtown Athenaeum Hall (tickets are available on Eventfinda). There are laughs here for all the family. It is amazing that after two millennia we are still laughing at the same jokes! by Blaise Barham

SPRING SALE STARTS SATURDAY 7 SEPTEMBER

An Age of Miracles? Throughout history, the state of advancement of human civilization has been defined by what it used to make tools, those tools determining what a society could physically accomplish. The first age of humanity was the Stone Age - home to Fred Flintstone and every good (or terrible) caveman movie. Stone tools tended to be simple, heavy, and relatively weak, and while a skilled worker could accomplish remarkable things, they were limiting to a society as a whole.

Metal use began with the Bronze Age - think ancient Egypt, the Celts, Shang Dynasty in China, or the Inca in South America - leading to the Iron Age - say Rome or Chinese Qin dynasty. The Steam Age heralded the industrial revolution, while the Information Age that we live in now brought us everything from space invaders to MRI machines. Interpretations and details of the ages of human history vary, but the key point does not - as the material sophistication of our society’s toolbox changed, so too did our ability to impact our physical environment.

Human society is again on the cusp of another age, another step in sophistication of our toolbox, another sea change in our ability to impact our physical word - the age of nanotechnology. In a Nanotech Age, society has tools capable of building from the atomic level up. Such a society can build machines smaller than a human cell, capable of individually hunting and destroying cancerous cells within your body; could build with super strong and lightweight materials making carbon fibre seem antique; and can manufacture substances capable of energy storage far superior to our best batteries, gas filtration better than our lungs, and solar energy capture better than photosynthesis - all those properties given by the atomic and molecular precision of their construction.

Arthur C Clarke, futurist and author, once wrote that, “any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” To those of us used to the miracles of the information age, the age of nanotechnology would seem as magical, as our smartphones would seem to a 19th century passenger on an early steam train. Of course it won’t be magic, it will be science. We’ll get there through dedicated, intensive research and, for all its power, it will have its own limitations, its own dangers to be avoided. But the new power it offers can’t come a moment too soon. The legacies of our industrial age technologies and behaviour - climate change, pollution, ecosystem and species loss - have proven decidedly resistant to industrial age solutions. We are at the beginning of our journey into the nanotech age, but already our first steps offer us hope that we will have new and powerful tools to bring to bear on our legacy problems. A word about the cartoon. In previous years, The Lakes Weekly had a regular cartoon and many have mentioned that it’s something they have missed. As of this week Jay Cassells is taking up the mantle. Jake Hassells as he can be known, was a “nom du buerre” given to him by a law partner. Jay works in Queenstown where, like others, he is often suspected of hiding a “bushel under a light”. We’ve coaxed it back out and are hoping Jay will become a regular contributor with a weekly critique of all things Queenstown. If you enjoy his work Jay has a book of a series of famous fish called, unremarkably, “Cassells’ Book of Fish” Enjoy “Council has applied to discharge waste into waterways. If it gets consent it won’t get fined for pollution so saves money for ratepayers”. jakehassells.com

Measles - Making a comeback?

note: This week we received a “Whinge” on vaccinating our children. It’s a key topic, especially with the measles outbreak spreading across the country including Queenstown. While longer than a standard whinge, its important, passionate and a well written piece so we’ve dedicated the space to publish it in full. As a mother of a 6 month old baby, the confirmed cases of measles in Queenstown this week have caused me such concern, we have considered staying home in order to protect my little bundle. Measles is a potentially serious, highly infectious disease caused by a virus. Measles is the most common vaccine-preventable cause of death among children throughout the world. Babies aren’t routinely vaccinated against measles until 15 months and if they do contract it, will most likely end up in hospital and very sick. So, it makes me absolutely angry to no end that people “choose” not to vaccinate their kids as this is why we are having so many people all over the country getting this preventable disease. The measles vaccine is one of the most effective vaccines. New Zealand has officially eliminated measles, with outbreaks occurring when visitors bring it from overseas. But if we don’t keep our vaccination rates up, we risk having the disease embed itself again in our country. I have seen parents argue on social media, how does their unvaccinated child affect vaccinated children? It affects the herd immunity and those unvaccinated people provide a way for the disease to spread through the community. The disease then (as seen in CHCh and Auckland) also gets contracted by those most vunerable that have no choice - babies and those with immunodeficiency who can’t get vaccinated. You choose not to vaccinate, but I can’t choose for my baby to not contract measles. Of the 773 cases across the country so far this year, 91.7 per cent were in people who were not vaccinated or did not know their vaccination status. (source: Newshub) They have set up a special children’s measles ward in Middlemore Hospital. I really don’t understand people who cherry pick what they like from science. You have your smart phones, the internet, anti-biotics, air travel, chemotherapy, cars, electricity, etc etc all these things science provided for our benefit and you choose to think that one of the biggest medical breakthroughs in human history is not for your children? I think not vaccinating your children is super selfish and dumb. A lot of people’s reasons for not vaccinating, is the fear of their child developing autism.

I would prefer my child to have autism than die of Measles complications. But luckily, I don’t have to worry about my baby developing autism after he gets his MMR shot. The widespread fear that vaccines increase risk of autism originated with a 1997 study published by Andrew Wakefield, a British surgeon. The article was published in The Lancet, a prestigious medical journal, suggesting that the measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccine was increasing autism in British children. The paper has since been completely discredited due to serious procedural errors, undisclosed financial conflicts of interest, and ethical violations. Andrew Wakefield lost his medical license and the paper was retracted from The Lancet. Nonetheless, the hypothesis was taken seriously, and several other major studies were conducted. None of them found a link between any vaccine and the likelihood of developing autism. Today, the true causes of autism remain a mystery, but to the discredit of the autism-vaccination link theory, several studies have now identified symptoms of autism in children well before they receive the MMR vaccine. And even more recent research provides evidence that autism develops in utero, well before a baby is born or receives vaccinations. (Source : publichealth.org) Babies are most likely born with autism... this makes sense to me. All other vaccines myths can be debunked also if you are asking. So if you have gained your special knowledge of vaccines off the internet from the likes of David Avocado Wolfe then I suggest you start reading some peer reviewed scientific studies on the matter, start trusting the medical profession or look up the meaning of the Dunning/Kruger effect. I am not saying don’t question anything, it is very much awesome to question everything in the world around us, but do your research properly. A scientific theory is an explanation of an aspect of the natural world that can be repeatedly tested and verified in accordance with the scientific method, using accepted protocols of observation, measurement, and evaluation of results. Repeatedly tested and verified. In the last 100 years, the human population has gone from 2 billion to 8 billion.. why? It is largely down to sanitation, hygiene, nutrition, anti-biotics and vaccines. Kids just don’t die like they used to... amazing aye? Vaccinate yourselves and your children, for everyone’s sake. P.S. Vaccines don’t cause autism, the Earth is not flat, Trump is not the Chosen one, climate change is real, and 1080 saves native birds. Ok? #science

Need Q. immigration advice?

I recently lodged a work visa application and Immigration NZ have come back to say that my employer isn’t complying with the labour laws of New Zealand and that my visa may be declined. How is this my fault ?

Put a question to Queenstown’s expert immigration team. Email your questions to: askanexpert@laneneave.co.nz

A.

The immigration policy which applies to all work visa applications clearly states that employers wishing to employ non-New Zealanders must comply with all relevant employment and immigration laws. This requirement is designed to project your legal rights as an employee and ensures that you are treated fairly in your place of employment, given your contracted share of wages/salary and receive your other legislative entitlements such as holiday pay, sick leave etc.

North Face Frontier

by Casey Lucas-Quiad

The weather window for the 2019 North Face Frontier opened on 1st September, and both local and international freeride skiers and boarders have been waiting with bated breath to see whether mother nature would comply. Fortunately, the snow this year is up to snuff and the 2* race was all systems go on Sunday morning. A Freeride World Tour qualifier event, the Frontier was formerly known as The North Face Freeski Open of NZ. The race takes place on the sprawling, rugged terrain of the Remarkables, providing a 2* and a 4* event for some of the region’s most talented skiers and snowboarders with the opportunity to capture World Tour points. This event is an important rung on the ladder for many freeride athletes who are just beginning their careers while also attracting international talent who are looking to accrue more points on the World Tour circuit. Freeride is as much an art form as it is a sport, expecting skiers and snowboarders to descend from the top to the bottom of an ungroomed natural face rich with terrain. The goal is to complete the run with both style and speed, utilising the natural features of the terrain to perform tricks. The Remarkables, with

www.doubleglazeit.co.nz

its varied terrain, is an ideal venue for freeride and has provided an excellent base for the North Face Frontier to grow over the years into one of the prominent events on the Winter Games calendar. Last year’s men’s ski competition proved to be a big day for Kiwi athletes, with Queenstowner Blake Marshall toppling some big international names to claim the number one ranking. On the women’s side, Jess Hotter of Ohakune handily won the 4* ski last year with a run full of big air and a jubilant finish. The Frontier is where she first cut her teeth as a competitive freeride skier, so her mastery of the mountain comes as no surprise.

Good Girl Bad Girl

The Nickel Boys

(F ROB, All branches)

(F WHI, All branches)

A girl is discovered hiding in a secret room in the aftermath of a terrible crime. Halfstarved and filthy, she won’t tell anyone her name, or her age, or where she came from. Maybe she is twelve, maybe fifteen. She doesn’t appear in any missing persons file, and her DNA can’t be matched to an identity. From the bestselling author of The Secrets She Keeps, the writer Stephen King calls “an absolute master…with heart and soul,” a fiendishly clever suspense novel about a dangerous young woman with a special ability to know when someone is lying—and the criminal psychologist who must outwit her to survive.

As the Civil Rights movement begins to reach the black enclave of Frenchtown in segregated Tallahassee, Elwood Curtis takes the words of Dr. Martin Luther King to heart: He is “as good as anyone.” Abandoned by his parents, but kept on the straight and narrow by his grandmother, Elwood is about to enroll in the local black college. But for a black boy in the Jim Crow South in the early 1960s, one innocent mistake is enough to destroy the future. Elwood is sentenced to a juvenile reformatory called The Nickel Academy, whose mission statement says it provides “physical, intellectual and moral training” so the delinquent boys in their charge can become “honorable and honest men.” Based on the real story of a reform school in Florida that operated for one hundred and eleven years and warped the lives of thousands of children, The Nickel Boys is a devastating, driven narrative.

Artful home interiors are born from curiosity, creativity, and imagination, yet many of us fail to see a potential curtain rod in a bamboo stick or a kitchen counter in an old carpenter’s bench. Anyone can create a beautiful home without expensive store-bought pieces simply by foraging and salvaging. Discarded objects can be restored, recycled, or repurposed to fill any space with style. In an era when sustainability, living off the grid, and reducing our eco-footprint have never been more important or appealing, The Foraged Home will provide guidance and inspiration to those looking to go beyond the world of mass-produced products.

Drugs… and more drugs Everyone has their views, legal and moral – and illegal drugs are, as the name implies, illegal. A more interesting and perhaps relevant point though is: what is the harm? This is when things get interesting. Police staff in Queenstown Lakes have noticed an increase in the availability of methamphetamine, MDMA and cocaine over recent times. This view has been confirmed by some in the hospitality sector. It also seems a greater percentage of those going through our cells are showing strong signs of being drug affected. Along with increased availability, police staff have noticed, and statistics support, an increase in dishonesty offending, suicide attempts, family harm incidents and in particular, gang activity. I’m not saying that in every case there is an ironclad case for causation and generally there are several factors at play, but the correlation is compelling. When it comes to our ‘health’ as a community there is a very strong case that drugs such as those mentioned above are doing us all sorts of harm. Police staff regularly come across families and individuals who have been seriously adversely affected by drugs. Not just in the immediate sense but more importantly in relation to family dysfunction, criminality, employment and their general progression or trajectory in life. Other social services who work with these people confirm this.

Closer to home the demand has created supply lines and systems to provide the product to the consumer. The criminal organisations are largely gang-based, affiliated or controlled. In spite of what their occasional PR efforts will try and have you believe, these are not benign ‘clubs’ or groups doing their own thing. They are cynical, violent and ruthless groups exploiting society to put cash in their own pockets. There are numerous recent examples of their presence in Queenstown doling out large wads of cash for helicopter flights, jet boat rides, accommodation and other activities. Consider also the various assault victims and intimidated locals and visitors left in their wake. John Fookes Senior Sergeant, Area Prevention Manager Otago Lakes Central Area

There is plenty of literature on the topic and if you’re so inclined, time spent looking through some of it is interesting and at times confronting. For example consider the remarkable destruction of communities, families and individuals in areas from which cocaine is sourced. Imagine if the effects felt by these communities were being seen to the same degree in NZ. Because it’s happening somewhere else, to someone else, it doesn’t seem to register to those in NZ creating the demand that they actually bear some of the responsibility for this.

Go Orange and Winter Pride by Emma Hansen When we were first met with Marty and Mike about Winter Pride, there was never a question as to whether Go Orange would be involved. It was an easy no brainer for us, as the promotion of diversity and inclusion within Go Orange is at the forefront of our company culture and external communications to our customers. Our partnership with Winter Pride enables us to promote diversity inclusion internally amongst our staff, externally to our customers but also locally to our community. WINTER PRIDE

Welcome to Winter Pride “The Queenstown Lakes District is fortunate to be home to a broad range of people from all walks of like, whether that’s ethnicity, beliefs, sexual orientation or gender identity. I, for one, am delighted we can be part of such a richly diverse community and it’s the perfect place for the Southern Hemisphere’s largest Winter pride festival, Winter Pride, to also find a home. “We’re proud to host an event that embraces and celebrates the rainbow community. Queenstown has been hosting this festival since 2012 and it’s a delight to see people coming from all around the world to take part. As an employer, QLDC took the Pride Pledge last year, and I was personally very honoured to be a part of opening the fantastic rainbow crossing in the Queenstown CBD as part of the celebrations. I hope that many more local and national organisations will continue to commit to the Pride Pledge and to ensure our LGBTTQ+ friends, whānau and colleagues can feel safe, celebrated and included. “Diversity and inclusiveness are key to mutual understanding and respect, and they’re traits on which we pride ourselves pun intended - in this beautiful and varied area. “To everyone who’s come to celebrate and be a part of this special event: welcome to the Queenstown Lakes District, and welcome to Winter Pride.” Mayor Jim Boult

Be an Everyday Hero this Breathe Better September The Breathe Better September campaign is open for signups now, with five-year-old Sapphire being the first to get involved. Breathe Better September is the annual campaign run by Asthma and Respiratory Foundation NZ to increase awareness for the over 700,000 Kiwis who live with asthma or other respiratory illnesses, and gather some vital funds to support them. The Everyday Hero Better Breathing Challenge encourages people to get out, get active, and improve their respiratory health. This could be as simple as walking around the block once a day, practicing some daily yoga, or running a marathon; whatever pushes you to raise awareness and improve your own health. Schools, companies, families, or individuals like Sapphire can set up their own Better Breathing Challenge fundraising page on ‘Everyday Hero’. Digital Better Breathing Challenge packs are also available to help promote your campaigns, including posters, images, factsheets, and more. ARFNZ CEO Letitia O’Dwyer participates every year and says that seeing someone like Sapphire leading the way is nothing short of inspiring. “This campaign not only encourages Kiwis to think about an active lifestyle, but also educates and informs the public about asthma and other respiratory conditions,” says Letitia. “One in six New Zealanders have a respiratory disease, and it’s the third most common cause of death. This campaign is huge for us to help the country understand how serious these illnesses are. “A young child like Sapphire recognising the importance of this is both heart-warming and inspirational, and we hope that many others follow her example.” Erin Simpson, media personality and ARFNZ Ambassador, says that the Better Breathing Challenges are the highlight of her year. “Having lived with asthma for most of my life, I know how serious it can be, and how important this campaign is.” If you would like to take up the challenge, fundraise, or support someone head over to the website www.breathebetterseptember.co.nz

THEATRE. One Man Two Guvnors A fast-paced, sidesplittingly-funny live comedy. Written by Richard Bean, this play a unique mix of satire, slapstick, one-liners, and in-betweenscene vaudeville acts set in Brighton, England in 1963. Performed by Remarkable Theatre.

Art News 2019’s additions to the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame Iconic Kiwi rock band Th’ Dudes will be inducted into the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame at the Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards later this year. Established in the late 1970s/ early 1980s, the band’s founding members include Peter Urlich, Dave Dobbyn and the late Ian Morris. They’re known for hits such as ‘Walking in Light’, ‘Right First Time’, ‘Be Mine Tonight’ and ‘Bliss’. Earlier this month, it was announced that the musicians behind ‘Blue Smoke’, known as “New Zealand’s first home-grown pop song”, would also be inducted into the NZ Music Hall of Fame at the 2019 APRA Silver Scroll Awards. Ruru Karaitiana, Pixie Williams and Jim Carter wrote ‘Blue Smoke’ in 1949; it was the first song to be written, recorded and manufactured in New Zealand and was released on a New Zealand label. Two inductions are made into the hall each year, one is decided by APRA, the other by Recorded Music NZ.

From humble Auckland beginnings, Hollie Fullbrook, aka Tiny Ruins, has become a popular Kiwi export. She’s collaborated with Twin Peaks mastermind David Lynch and was recently nominated for an APRA Silver Scroll for songwriting. Hollie started out as a solo acoustic folk artist, but Tiny Ruins has now unfolded into a fantastic line-up of musical talent. As a band, Tiny Ruins has spent much of this year touring the Olympic Girls album (released February 2019) across UK, America and Europe. “We need to plant a quite a lot of trees,” Hollie jokes, when asked about her jetsetting international tours. “We’ve played at some very beautiful venues – at a Roman amphitheatre, built in 19AD, we played beside these big stone columns. We’ve played in a Swiss village that’s the home of some particular kind of cheese… and we’ve played lots of festivals. “We’re a hardened machine now. We will be on fire (as they say), by the time we play in Queenstown. Playing in NZ is best – it’s home, it’s familiar, we know the ins and outs and we know the people.” The band for the New Zealand tour comprises of Christchurch drummer Joe McCallum and regular band members, bass player Cass Basil and electric guitarist and producer Tom Healy. “We’ll play mostly songs from Olympic Girls, with a couple of oldies thrown in for good measure. The songs really flourish when they’re played live. There’s lots of textural landscape. Tom’s life work is his pedal board – two metres of pedals and wires that produce the most amazing sound. And Cass, Cass is an incredible bass player and there’s lots of moments where the bass really shines in these songs. “Drummer Joe McCallum is joining us for this tour, he’s a really great drummer… then there’s lil’ ol’ me, just doing what I do best.” Also joining the Tiny Ruins tour is Australian music legend and co-founder of Milk! Records, Jen Cloher. “Jen is one of my absolute heroes,” says Hollie. “Her last record is phenomenal, one of the best in the world, I really admire and look up to her. It’s unreal that she has agreed to our ramshackle tour of New Zealand. It’s really going to be a great show… we may even end up playing a few songs together. So, turn up early to make sure you see her full set. It’s more like a double headline really.” Get a taste of Hollie’s talent pre-show with the recently released (28th August) solo track ‘One Million Flowers’ – it’s a deliciously simple track exemplifying the best of Hollie’s song writing and musical talents. Tickets for Tiny Ruin’s gig at Sherwood Queenstown on Friday 13th September are available via UnderTheRadar.co.nz.

Correction Radio Kaos was playing at Arrowtown Athenaeum Hall not at Sherwood. Apologies for any inconvenience.
