Political Noise It’s that time again, and the noise has become deafening. Political noise. The General Election on 7 November is judgement day. Our democratic right to vote for the personalities, policies and political ideologies that feel right. The “promises if elected” are pouring from the mouths of those vying for a seat in the Beehive. It’s game on. Here in the Whakatipu, we are in the Southland Electorate, despite being in Otago. A massive chunk of New Zealand’s landmass containing mostly forest and grass is in our electorate. But not that many voting eligible humans. In 2023, there were 48,743 of us voters, with 82% casting their democratic right to vote. 48.43% voted for the National Party with National Party candidate Joseph Mooney winning the seat with 23,231 votes. Next best got 6020 votes. Is there a better definition of a “safe seat” than right here in Southland? Regardless of political leanings, I find the electoral mapping that puts us in Southland head scratching. And being in a safe seat annoying. Queenstown is by far the largest “metropolitan” centre in the Southland electorate, that oddly does not include Invercargill. Queenstown 29,000. Next best Gore 8310. However, when you add up all those little sheep, beef and milk townships they make up a large chunk of the votes on polling day.

Petdirect is now open! From left to right: Aaron, Hannah, Vanessa, Gracie, Beckie, Eden, Kendra, Mileka, Emmy and Shane.

The Southland Electorate has been forever owned by one political party. Nothing wrong with that if you are a sheep, beef or dairy farmer. Queenstown on the other hand is very different and has become the political punching bag of the country. Forced into over tourism to earn the country revenue, forced to accept ad hoc unplanned housing developments. All in the name of supporting political agendas set elsewhere in New Zealand. Regardless of the ruling party in the Beehive, blue or red, we are given too little too late in return. Why? Because politically our votes will make little difference to the left, right or anywhere in-between on the political spectrum when the votes are counted. So, there you have it, my opinion of all that is wrong. But rather than throw our toys, what can we do to better our lot from this situation. Concentrating on the candidates is a good start. Win or lose, safe seat or not, they are the individual humans who will need to stand up in front of us and promise to deliver, for us living here in the Whakatipu. The Lakes Weekly has invited the Southland Electorate candidates from the top polling political parties in the last General Election, to sell us their pitch here on the front-page. Over the coming weeks, let’s hear what they say and with an open mind prepare to tick the box that is right for you. I’m all ears. Scott Stevens

ON THE APP THIS WEEK Skyline Charity Golf Classic Raffle Opens to Support Local Students The Skyline Charity Golf Classic raffle opens on 1 October 2026, giving the wider community a chance to win one of 15 prizes worth more than $60,000 while helping Wakatipu High School students attend Branches Camp. The charity raffle runs as part of the Skyline Charity Golf Classic, extending the tournament’s fundraising impact beyond the golf course.

The prize line-up brings together 15 standout experiences worth more than $60,000, including international and New Zealand travel, tickets to major sporting events, memorable golf packages, Queenstown adventures and dining, and iconic South Island experiences. Net proceeds will go to Branches Charitable Trust, helping ensure cost is not a barrier for Year 10 students taking part in a formative local experience that has been part of growing up in the Wakatipu for nearly six decades. Branches Charitable Trust Chairperson Carlyn Topp says the camp helps students discover what they are capable of. “Seven nights without phones, parents or home comforts means they have to rely on each other, problem-solve and step outside their comfort zone. Every year, we see students return more confident, more resilient and more connected to their classmates and the outdoors. It stays with them long after they leave.”

Skyline Queenstown General Manager Wayne Rose says every ticket sold will make a difference. “Branches Camp can be a life-changing experience for local young people. We want to help make sure every student has the opportunity to take part, regardless of their personal circumstances.” Tickets go on sale from 1 October 2026 at $100 each, with entries closing 28 November at 5pm. Winners will be drawn the following evening, 29 November at 6:30pm, marking the finish of the Skyline Charity Golf Classic tournament. The goal is to sell 1000 tickets, with every ticket helping more local students experience Branches Camp. Raffle tickets are open to New Zealand residents aged 18 and over, with no tournament pass required. To buy tickets, scan the QR code.

Step Forward, Queenstown: Your Community Needs You Queenstown is known for its energy — the buzz of visitors, the seasons, the constant movement of people, visiting, working, exploring, and building new lives. If you’ve lived in Queenstown for any length of time, you’ll know that this place runs on more than scenery and tourism. It also runs on people who quietly help keep the community connected. Some of that work is visible. Much of it isn’t. And inside that less visible space is Citizens Advice Bureau Queenstown, a place where everyday questions, worries, and challenges are met with empathy, information, and support. For 35 years, Citizens Advice Bureau Queenstown has been a steady presence in the community. It’s the place people turn to when they’re unsure what to do next — when they’re facing a tenancy issue, navigating employment questions, dealing with immigration challenges, sorting out consumer problems, or simply trying to understand their rights. It’s where people go when they need clarity, direction, or someone who will listen without judgement. In all cases people are treated as clients. Behind that service is a team of volunteers — ordinary people who give a few hours of their week to help others navigate life’s complexities. Some have been volunteering for years. Some are brand new. Some are retired, some are working part time, some are raising families, and some are building new careers. All of them bring something valuable. All of them help someone feel more supported. Right now, CAB Queenstown is looking for more of those people. More listeners. More problem solvers. More community minded locals who want to make a real difference in a way that fits into modern life. If you’ve ever wondered how you could contribute to Queenstown in a meaningful, flexible, human centred way, this is your moment. Why Volunteering at CAB Matters — Now More Than Ever Queenstown is changing. The population is growing. The diversity of the community is expanding. More people are arriving from outside the region and outside New Zealand, more people are dealing with challenges that require information, support, and guidance. CAB Queenstown sees this every day. People walk through the door with: • tenancy questions • employment concerns • visa and immigration issues • consumer disputes • family challenges • confusion about processes or rights • stress about situations They come because they need help. They come because they have heard that someone will listen, someone will care, and someone will help them with their next step. That “someone” could be you. To find out more about volunteering:

CRIMELINE by Sue Fea

Youth arrested: breach of bail A local youth was arrested over the weekend after a group of youths were allegedly identified on a private yacht moored in Queenstown Bay. The individual was charged with unlawfully takes motor vehicle, unlawful gets into a motor vehicle, unlawfully gets onto a ship and escapes custody. He was also dealt with for allegedly breaching his current bail conditions and will appear in youth court on these charges – he has been remanded to a youth facility. “A reminder for local residents to be vigilant with regards to the security of their vehicle’s with there having been a number of cars stolen in recent months,” Sergeant Blair Duffy says. “Unfortunately, a number of these vehicles have been left overnight, unlocked and with keys in the ignition.”

Alleged drug dealer arressted A 64-year-old local man was arrested and charged on 30 September for alleged supply of cannabis and possession for supply of cocaine after a search warrant was executed. Queenstown Police continue to encourage members of the public to share information in relation to drug related offending and are reminded they can do so anonymously courtesy of Crimestoppers (0800 555 111).

Fenz warns don’t be complacent as spring heats up Meanwhile, Fire and Emergency is warning people not to be complacent as spring heats up and the much-heralded Super El Nino is expected to bring drier than normal conditions heading into summer. Otago Lakes assistant district commander Nic McQuillan says people may become complacent, even if there is the odd downpour of rain. “People are still having fires as we’re in an open season and we’re in that zone where everybody relaxes and winter is nearly over,” McQuillan says. “We’re still seeing fires. People are disposing of hot ashes and lighting wee fires. We’ve already seen a sizeable grass fire off Malaghans Road and a substantial blaze at Alberttown so people need to be super weary and supervise any fire.” In preparation for what is expected to be a dry summer for many parts of the district, McQuillan says people should stack their firewood away from their house and clear any dead leaves and branches 10m out from their house. It’s a good idea to prune trees close to their homes too. (See checkitsalright.nz) Former long-time local fire risk management officer Stu Ide reiterates those calls and says while we’ve yet to see the predicted super-hot conditions eventuate everyone needs to be on alert this spring and heading into summer. “People preparing to go away camping and the likes in those drier seasons could be in real trouble if we get what they’re predicting,” he says. With the excitement of the barbecue season and cooking outside again, they’re urging Kiwi blokes to give the fat collection tray underneath the barbie a good spring clean too. “We had a few of those fires around Frankton last year so take those preventative measures,” Ide says.

Expect the unexpected in the backcountry – Super Niño With the summer season just around the corner and a “super El Niño event” predicted, DOC is calling for people to be prepared for all conditions when heading outdoors. DOC Southern South Island Operations Director Aaron Fleming says people should be prepared for intense weather systems. More rain and wind is predicted, especially around the Southern Lakes area, which Fleming says could lead to more storm damage, slips and tree fall on tracks, as well as flooding around the region. “With increased winds also likely, people should be extra cautious using gas cookers in the backcountry and always check its alright before lighting any fire on public conservation land,” he says. “When tracks and structures are damaged, it takes time to assess them. DOC rangers work hard to get things back on track, but we can’t be everywhere all at once,” Fleming says. “If you’re heading out in the first good weather window after a significant storm, be prepared for slips and tree fall. Some places may be unpassable; know when to turn back. If you come across damage in the backcountry, be sure to report it to DOC. “You can’t control the weather, but you can control your plans. Be prepared for all conditions and have a safe summer season enjoying and giving back to nature.

ON THE APP THIS WEEK Friend of missing Queenstown woman Erika Rodrigues Coelho remaining optimistic A close friend of a woman missing near Queenstown is not giving up hope that she will be found safe, as search crews continue to comb land around Coronet Peak. Erika Rodrigues Coelho, 47, has not been seen or heard from since 18 September. The Brazilian national’s rental car was found at Skippers Saddle on 21 September. Police believe it was parked there some time in the afternoon or evening of 18 September. Police have appealed for public help to identify a man seen on the summit track in the Mount Dewar area at 12.30pm on 18 September as part of their search for Coelho. Brett Squire told RNZ Coelho’s friends and family were extremely worried and distressed but “absolutely focused on Erika and her safe return”. “In terms of the work that has been done so far by the police and search and rescue teams - I believe that they are all doing a very thorough job and we want to thank them all for their hard work and dedication to finding Erika,” he said. “While a couple of weeks has passed since Erika’s disappearance, she is an incredibly strong woman, we are therefore remaining optimistic that this concludes (hopefully soon) with a good outcome.” The large-scale search for Coelho involved helicopters, drones, Coastguard crews, Land Search and Rescue volunteers and a search dog. Queenstown Sergeant Terry Wood has previously said the man on the summit track could be a tourist. “The man is described as of Asian complexion, in his 30s, average to taller in height. Slim build with short dark hair and clean shaven,” he said. “We would like to speak with him regarding our ongoing investigation for missing 47-year-old Erika Rodrigues Coelho near Queenstown.” Anyone with information about Coelho’s disappearance was asked to contact police via 105, citing reference number 260921/8173.

Regional deal formalised for Otago Central Lakes Regional leaders and government officials have pledged to work together on affordable housing solutions, transport projects and better access to healthcare in Queenstown Lakes and Central Otago as part of a regional deal. The Otago Central Lakes Deal - a 10-year plan to deliver infrastructure and manage rapid growth - was formally signed in Queenstown on Tuesday afternoon. Queenstown Lakes District Council, Central Otago District Council and Otago Regional Council teamed up in early 2025 to develop a joint proposal. The deal was initially set to be unveiled in August, but the announcement was scuppered by the National Party’s crisis talks. Speaking at the signing, Infrastructure Minister Chris Bishop said he was excited to formalise the deal, and excited about the future of the region. “It’s about the start of a renewed relationship between central government and the councils to try and unlock growth here, but also fix some of the problems that have been built up for too long,” he said. In late August, negotiations were put on hold after the National Party ruled out the idea of a bed tax. The three councils said they were seeking more clarity, given the deal had included a commitment to explore an accommodation levy in 2027.

COMMUNITY NOTES Table for Tomorrow: Celebrating 10 Years of Community Action for Freshwater Gather today. Shape tomorrow. This November, WAI Wānaka is inviting the community to take a seat at the table for a special milestone. Table for Tomorrow is a fundraising long lunch celebrating 10 years of WAI Wānaka and looking ahead to the future of freshwater in the Upper Clutha. Held on Friday, 13 November at Edgewater, Wānaka, the event will bring together community leaders, businesses, supporters and changemakers for an afternoon of exceptional food, meaningful connection and inspiring conversation. For the past decade, WAI Wānaka has worked alongside schools, scientists, volunteers, landowners, businesses and community groups Sir Ian Taylor

to better understand and protect the freshwater environments that sustain our communities and define this remarkable rohe (region).

Whether you’re a long-time supporter of WAI Wānaka or simply care about the future of local lakes and rivers, everyone is welcome.

Freshwater lies at the heart of life in the Upper Clutha. It supports biodiversity, recreation, livelihoods, and community wellbeing, while shaping the landscapes that make this place so special. As our rohe continues to grow, community involvement in caring for these environments is more important than ever.

Table for Tomorrow Friday, 13 November, 2026 12noon – 3.30pm Edgewater Hotel, Wānaka

Table for Tomorrow is an opportunity to celebrate what has been achieved over the past 10 years while helping WAI Wānaka’s ongoing work in freshwater science, education, environmental monitoring and community action.

Learn more and book tickets at: www.waiwanaka.nz/table-for-tomorrow Together, we can help shape a healthy freshwater future for generations to come.

Guests will enjoy a curated banquet lunch overlooking Lake Wānaka and hear from keynote speaker Sir Ian Taylor, one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most respected entrepreneurs, innovators and storytellers. The afternoon will also feature live and silent auctions with a range of exclusive experiences, products and prizes donated by local businesses and supporters. Guests will have the opportunity to view artwork by internationally acclaimed artist Andrew Tischler, whose work celebrates the natural landscapes and waterways that inspire so many people to call this rohe home. WAI Wānaka Chief Executive Cat Dillon says the event is both a celebration and an invitation. “Over the past decade, our community has shown what’s possible when people come together around a shared purpose. Table for Tomorrow is a chance to celebrate that journey, while investing in the work still needed to ensure healthy freshwater ecosystems for future generations.”

Boaties and recreational water users are being warned to take extreme care this spring and heading into summer, keeping an eye out for slash and debris with several early spring deluges seeing masses of large driftwood washed up on local beaches recently. With short, sharp bursts of wet and windy spring conditions possibly accentuated by the much talked about ‘Super El Nino’ weather patterns, Coastguard Queenstown skipper Anthony Hill says boaties need to keep a lookout. The masses of large driftwood washed up on Queenstown Bay beach after several heavy downpours last month (mid-September) is testament to what’s out there and Hill says it’s even more of a problem when the lake remains high. “We’ve seen some of these short, sharp bursts of heavy rain that wash a lot of slash and debris into the lakes, clusters of which float around for some time. “We do get debris moving around Lake Wakatipu, especially after heavy downpours and when there’s a deluge that momentum picks up. It’s very hard to see and definitely not good for your engine or propellor.” He’s also urging boaties to carry suitable forms of communication out on the water this season. “We recommend a VHF radio, although we’ve had problems with the repeater on top of Cecil Peak, the solar panels sometimes being covered with snow.” Hill says the Queenstown Lakes District Council is negotiating to try and get that repeater lowered and repositioned. “People out on the water should still carry a personal locator beacon or call *500 on their mobile to contact Coastguard NZ or 111 in an emergency.” New national legislation matching this district in making lifejackets compulsory for all ages in small recreational craft is being welcomed by the Coastguard Queenstown, he says. “It’s been the law here under our local bylaws for some time, the first version passed locally in 2009, however, with so many visitors to the area many people don’t realise it’s mandatory,” Hill says. “Anyone of any age on all recreational craft (6 metres or under) locally is currently required to wear a lifejacket here and we’re very pleased to see that this is to become law nationally.” The rules apply to paddleboards, kayaks and jetskis as well. For over vessels 6 metres failing to carry sufficient lifejackets in the correct size on board attracts a fine of anything from $300 to $500, a $500 fine also can also be slapped on any boatie allowing anyone under 15 to drive their craft unsupervised, Hill says.

The third reading for the Life Jackets For Children and Young Persons Bill was passed recently to try and reduce the risk of children and young people drowning during recreational boating. However, Hill says under deliberation it was realised that it was not just young people at risk and the Bill was amended to cover adults too with the name amended. From 9 October 2026 the new law means everyone nationally must wear a lifejacket while on board a recreational craft of 6m or less. Hill says at present on boats larger than 6m this is left to the discretion of the skipper and those on board. Children under 10 must still wear a life jacket though under local council bylaws. He says the changes can’t come soon enough. Meanwhile, Coastguard Queenstown’s 35 volunteers continue to train hard in preparation for what’s predicted to be a boomer summer season for visitors. “We’re there to help the likes of Search and Rescue if there’s an emergency, and boaties if they need to be towed to safety,” he says. Coastguard Volunteers are also on hand offering safety advice at local events. “It’s a chance for us boaties to give back to the boating community.” They’re also pretty close to having their own all woman Wakatipu crew. “We’ve had a good number of women expressing interest and they’re very close to participating as an all-female crew,” Hill says. It’s hoped they’ll be ready in the New Year.

Charming classical music – New Zealand Symphony Orchestra on the road by Jessica Allen

New Zealand Symphony Orchestra (NZSO) will stop by Queenstown this month, bringing a touch of spring with them, with the Serenade programme. Expect sparkling gems from the Classical and Romantic repertoire, featuring pieces by composers Andrée, Haydn and Brahms. Sadly forgotten until the 1980s, Elfrida Andrée was one of Sweden’s first female composers and a trailblazer in her own time. Her Andante Recitative for Strings is exquisitely intimate and completely charming. Similarly, Brahms’ Serenade No. 1 has been somewhat forgotten, overshadowed by his titanic symphonies, but this six-movement serenade, Classical in form but Romantic in sound, never fails to delight. NZSO Section Principal Cello Andrew Joyce performs Joseph Haydn’s Cello Concerto No.1. Remarkably, the piece was only rediscovered in the 20th century, and since then, it has mesmerised and delighted audiences with its exuberance, bravura and humour. “It’s just a really fun piece to play,” Joyce says. “It’s technically demanding but not on the level of some of the concertos, which are much more stressful. This one’s not as stressful to play, and I can really just enjoy it.” Originally from the UK, Joyce regularly worked with the London Symphony and London

Philharmonic Orchestras, touring and performing in some of the world’s most renowned concert halls, before meeting his Kiwi now-wife Julia. The pair live in Wellington and Joyce loves being a part of NZSO.

"To have that many musicians, all with a common goal to make this piece of music come alive, you can’t get that experience off a record.” “It’s quite a contrast to London. It’s infinitely more beautiful, for starters. London’s a great place. I always maintain London’s the best city in the world to visit, it’s a very tough place to live, especially as a musician. It’s, sort of, working every day of the month just to make ends meet.” He described working in London as being on a hamster wheel, playing multiple different programmes a week, as opposed to here where they take a piece or programme and play it a few times around the country. The NZSO are all based in Wellington and have more of a focus on touring. “The schedule is much more civilised – there’s a much better work-life balance here.”

The piece Joyce will be playing is something he first learnt as a teenager and was one of the first concertos he ever played with an orchestra, so he’s really looking forward to it. Being a soloist means he’ll get to sit in front of the orchestra, which he describes as really special. “It’s always such a supportive collegial experience. It’s a really, really cool thing to do, you just feel like everyone’s got your back and they want the best.” Modern day access to music has changed the way we enjoy it, from compressed digital files to poorer-quality sound equipment and this ever-evolving digital world in which we live. By going and seeing live music you’re getting a oneoff experience, and with an orchestra of 60+ individuals, it doesn’t get much more exciting. “There’s nothing quite like the live experience. It sounds cliché but we’ve all heard live music – you hear it in the street, you hear it in cafés and bars, but to hear an orchestra – to have that many musicians, all with a common goal to make this piece of music come alive, you can’t get that experience off a record.” NZSO will perform Serenade at Queenstown Memorial Theatre on Thursday, 22 October. You can find out more about the programme, NZSO and the artists at nzso.co.nz/events/serenade

My Life story

by Sue Fea

MARK ARROWSMITH ‘The American’

Tucked away in a renovated historic cottage in Arrowtown is an unassuming American Kiwi and former Santa Fe antique trader whose dad sold jewellery to Elvis Presley and western art to John Wayne. Mark Arrowsmith has had many careers, once a very successful cosmetic dentist to the stars in New Mexico. However, with his dad a highly regarded Indian trader and art dealer trading was in the Arrowsmith blood.

Mark worked in his father Rex’s trading post in Santa Fe from a young age, where Rex also rented out props to the many Western movies being shot in the area, rubbing shoulders with heroes and villains of the silver screen like Roy Rogers and Clint Eastwood. “My great-grandfather was a wild west cowboy and railroad detective. My grandfather, part Native American, was a magician and part of a 1920’s flying circus of barnstormers.” Mark’s dad sold to many Hollywood A-listers, a kind and generous man, always helping out the Native American people on the reservation where he sourced most of his handmade pieces. “My mum was a great cook, and Dad was always bringing clients home for dinner,” he says. “Anyone from rocket scientists, famous actors and authors to the Indian medicine man could turn up,” Mark grins. “My brother and I sat there in awe quietly listening. John Wayne came for dinner one night, but I was at uni. I met him at other times when he and my father were haggling over Western art.” Mark sometimes accompanied his father on trading trips to the reservation and witnessed many “unforgettable, mystical secret ceremonies, which were strictly off limits to most white people, and hosted by a Hopi medicine man”.

“No, ...no rattlesnakes here.” She said to someone on the other side of the door, ‘It’s okay, Johnny, you can come in now’. Johnny Cash appeared, dressed in black and she was June Carter!”

Mark earned an honours degree in Animal Science from Texas Tech University with plans to be a veterinarian, but says through a twist of fate, he turned out to be a dentist, setting up a successful practice focusing on cosmetic dentistry in Santa Fe.

“I realised, ‘This is what I’m meant to do. It’s in the Arrowsmith blood’.” He was once called on to do an emergency fix on an actor who had a scene coming up in a movie being filmed locally. “He was so grateful that he invited me back to the set and I spent an afternoon sitting in a director’s chair next to Robert Redford.” In 1986 Mark gave a talk about cosmetic dentistry at the Otago University Dental School and fell in love with NZ. Once home in the US he was invited back to come on staff as a lecturer. He jumped at the offer, selling his practice in months, moving back to Dunedin. In less than two years his dental career ended due to detached retinas in both eyes, likely caused by a skiing accident, leaving him with permanent damage. Out of options, and with a Kiwi wife and newborn son to support by then, Mark moved the family back to Santa Fe and reopened his father’s trading post.

Mark at home in his beloved Arrowtown

“My yearning for the simple New Zealand way of life had grown too strong. I wanted my children to grow up here,” he says. Mark sold the gallery, buying a beautiful farm and homestead in Alexandra, moving the family back to NZ. “That move back to small-town Alex was a real culture shock,” he grins. “The previous week I’d been a guest at Ralph Lauren’s birthday party. The next I was a nobody, known only as ‘The American’.” With a love for animals and a relevant degree under his belt, Mark turned deer farmer, gleaning extra knowledge from helpful local farmers, and inspiration from ‘The Horse Whisperer’ and his techniques. A cherry orchard was next, then after a divorce, the farm was sold, the proceeds used to purchase a luxury lodge at Lake Hayes in 2003. In 2009 he married his Australian wife, Sue, who had four young daughters, and became father to a blended family of eight kids.“ We likely hold the record for the most children through Wakatipu High School,” he grins. Mark’s done a stint as DOC regional concession compliance ranger and 15 years as a biosecurity officer for MPI locally. He’s also been a landscape consultant and gardener at Stoneridge Estate.“ I really had to hustle to feed all those kids.” he grins. Mark retired in 2020 and only recently gave up skiing after racking up 61 consecutive seasons. Still true to the Arrowsmith tradition these days he’s sourcing beautiful antique jewellery and selling it through the Gold Shop in Arrowtown.

“I realised, ‘This is what I’m meant to do. It’s in the Arrowsmith blood’.”

Tourist signs along the Route 66 highway advertised everything from handmade belts to rattlesnake stalls.

The disaster of a ruined career turned out to be “a blessing in disguise”. “I never really enjoyed dentistry.”

“Once I was with Dad at his trading post when a lady with a strong Southern drawl poked her head into the front doorway and asked, “Do y’all have any rattlesnakes in here? My husband is deathly afraid of rattlesnakes!” My father, puzzled, said

After 10 years back in Santa Fe selling rare antiques of the American West to the rich and famous, the family had expanded with their fourth child on the way.
