Could Queenstown become ZOOMtown?
This year’s COVID-19 crisis created shockwaves, putting our personal health and safety to the test and severely disrupting the way we do business. The silver lining is that it’s inspired a lot of us to rethink the way we work. Necessity is the mother of adaptation and this disruptor has created the largest global “work-from-homeâ€? experiment in history which has fast-forwarded us through years of trial and error. Remote and exible working isn’t new to lots of people, particularly the self-employed or digital nomads, who’ve been digitally mobile or part of globally distributed teams for years. But now others are seeing the opportunities and looking to adapt their business models. Let’s redesign the way we work and invest in the right tools and strategies to work smarter - not harder - for the health, wellbeing and sustainability of our people, business and Aotearoa. As our workforces become increasingly digitised, work from home (#wfh) or work from anywhere (#wfa) have become normal in our district. With good digital infrastructure, transport connectivity, a great lifestyle, co-working spaces and remote-friendly cafes, and existing remote worker communities, we could feasibly become a ‘Zoom Town’. If we diversify our economy we can focus more on our local talent, target investment in start-ups and side hustles as well as tapping into the returning Kiwi ‘brain gain’ and promoting ourselves as a ‘workcation’ destination for those looking to combine work and holiday. But as always there needs to be a balance. We need to stay socially connected because lockdown reminded us how much we value in-person interaction. There are some excellent tools and techniques for distributed teams to efďŹ ciently connect and communicate which we could learn more about. We could also shift some emphasis from our professional life to personal, such as â€˜ďŹ‚exing’ our schedules around catchups with family and friends, activities or community volunteering. Can we frontfoot our learnings from one of the most unusual years in history? RemoteTogetherNZ aims to do just that – be a conduit for accelerated learning, innovation and collaboration bringing transformative change‌to you! The Queenstown Lakes-based festival (8-13 March) is the ďŹ rst of its kind in NZ with the objective of bringing thought leaders and remote/exible working experts together to help Kiwis review, redesign and reset their strategies and business models for future success. We’ll also discuss opportunities for brain gain, side-hustles and the gig economy to help personal and organisational development. The programme features four learning pathways tailored to self-employed, returning Kiwis, small-medium enterprises, and larger organisations which include roundtable discussions, masterclasses and networking sessions. Visit www.remotetogethernz.com. Join us on the journey and let’s be remote – together. Trent Yeo – Ziptrek Ecotours

Sky City celebrated 20yrs in Queenstown on Friday. Michael Ahearne & Kate Gourdie from Auckland with Jonathan Browne
Celebrate our local heroes at the 2021 Lake Hayes A&P Show The Lake Hayes A&P Show is always an eagerly anticipated family event that takes place early in the new year, and for a time there was a real concern that 2021 would become a casualty of the virus. However, the organisers have received encouragement and support to press the go button on the 106th Annual Lake Hayes A&P Show which will take place on Saturday 9th January 2021 at the Lake Hayes Showgrounds. Better yet, this year entry is FREE for everyone! The Lake Hayes A&P Show is a fun day out for the family, set on one of the most beautiful Showgrounds in the country. Like all A&P shows it brings the town a little closer to the country and gives the Wakatipu community a taste of rural life. This year’s show has received financial support from the Central Lakes Trust (CLT), QLDC events fund and sponsors including The Arrowtown Lifestyle Retirement Village as principal sponsor. Community is at the heart of the Show and as we have seen over the past few months it is also at the heart of the Wakatipu. The theme this year is ‘Celebrating Local Heroes’ to acknowledge and thank our essential workers, volunteers and local heroes who have given so much to the community as a result of COVID, which is ongoing. We want to celebrate the people who worked tirelessly during the lockdown and thank them for their contribution.
Family and locals are the core of the Show and its heritage. It brings people together for one day a year to have a fun day out and catch up with friends. Something we have been doing since 1904. Mark your diary - it’s going to be another fabulous show!
Gates Open 7am • Trade & Food Stalls open 9am • Park & Ride begins at 9am
• Entertainment begins 10am • Grand Parade at 12:30pm
9th January 2021 - FREE Entry for Everyone!

Queenstown tourism giant Wayfare has sold its Arthurs Point restaurant and brewery. Canyon Brewing restaurant, located near Shotover Jet in Arthurs Point, has been closed since lockdown, but will reopen early next year under new owners, Queenstown restauranteurs James Nicholson and partners Jane, James and Jack Paterson. They also own The Boatshed Café and Bistro in the Frankton Marina. The Canyon Brewing team will be offered employment as part of the agreement. Nicholson says “We look after our locals and we’re really looking forward to ensuring the local community in Arthurs Point are well catered for. “ “We are excited and getting ready to do the restaurant and brewery label proud.” The brewery and restaurant will change hands on December 15, 2020. Wayfare commercial director Matthew Day says the company had planned to reopen the restaurant last month but when the four approached him – he knew it was the perfect result. “We’re incredibly pleased Canyon will lead its next phase of life with locals who love the brand, the beer, the location, and the venue”; Day says. “It really is an awesome venue, in a stunning location and I know the new owners fully appreciate it and will ensure it has a great future.” “We’re looking forward to continuing to work closely with them. Our Go Orange rafting operations share the same site, and many of Real Journeys vessels as well as Cardrona and Treble Cone sell the Canyon Brewing beer.” While the restaurant has been closed, the brewery has remained open throughout, selling its popular beer online, which will continue.

Clothes… and other things that matter
The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America’s Great Migration
Alexandra Shulman
Isabel Wilkerson
“(Clothes) that is the thing that everybody notices about you. What you wear … is not only the basis on which opinions are formed about you but, sometimes, the only way to say something.” This book is a mix of memoir, fashion history and social commentary by Alexandra Shulman - Editor at British Vogue for 306 issues. Shulman explores the language of clothes; from denim, holiday clothes, and the little black dress, to the white shirt and bikini. Appealing to all, this non-fiction ponders the meaning of clothes, and why they are chosen, and the stories they tell. Whether you are passionate about clothes or not, this book is warm, funny and definitely thought provoking!
This masterpiece of a book comes from Pulitzer Prize winning author, Isabel Wilkerson, as she examines the huge exodus of African Americans from the Southern States to the West and North from 1915 – 1970. Enlightening, beautifully written, and stacked with historical detail and poignant meaning, Wilkerson tracks the stories of three people; from Mississippi, Louisiana and Florida, to Chicago, California and New York. Enduring great social, economic and cultural shifts, the lives of these brave, yet ordinary, pioneers’ is captured page after page. A truly wonderful - and important - read.

The Shadow King
Gene Wolf
(F MEN: QTN, WKA, FTN)
Shortlisted for the Booker Prize 2020, The Shadow King is a gripping war story by Ethiopian-American writer, Maaza Mengiste. Set in 1935, as Italy invades Ethiopia during WWII, the book follows the life of Ethiopian born Hirut; an orphaned young girl who is sent to work as a maid at the home of Kindane and Aster, old friends of her parents. Whilst adjusting to new realities, and with Mussolini’s war raging on, Hirut, Aster and the other women want to do more to protect their country - but are restricted in their ‘womanly’ duties to help the wounded. Mengiste takes the reader on a historical journey; illuminating the important roles played by women during the War - which were often immersive page turner.
Runaways Vol 1: Pride and Joy Brian Vaughan

And you’re only a kid… in high school?! In Vol 1 of the Runaways series by Brian Vaughan, six teenagers go through a crazy journey of selfdiscovery - all while banding together to fight the baddies. In this long awaited sequel to Wolfe’s 2015 book A Borrowed Man we travel back to the twenty-second century to a tech-filled world where clones and robots are taken for granted. The tale follows the journey of Ern A. Smithe (who we met in the first book), a library owned clone of a once great murder mystery author. Smithe is sent out on loan to a young girl who is hoping that he can help track down her missing Father. But does he want to be found? This is a sci-fi mystery, with all the twists and turns readers expect from the legendary late author.
The Booksellers Dan Wechsler
(DOC DVD: QTN, FTN)
In 1950, New York City boasted 368 bookstores. By the time this 2017 documentary was filmed, that number had dwindled to just 79 stores; and no doubt there will be even less today. While this film could be seen as a lament to book reading, the delightfully eccentric book collectors in it remain ever passionate and hopeful for their profession – or as in some cases, their obsession. It takes us into the world of rare books and the dedicated bibliophiles that spend their lives buying and selling and hunting them down. For those that love books and even if you don’t, this charming gem of a documentary is a joy to watch.

queenstown@lonestar.co.nz NOWHERE TO STAY Recently we had been in contact with some friends from the North Island who indicated they were going to undertake a trip with their caravan to the South Island in March 2021 which was going to include Queenstown. They asked if I could recommend a suitable Holiday Park near the Queenstown CBD. Having undertaken a site visit I decided on the Queenstown Lakeview Holiday Park. I decided it would be perfect, as it had nice and clean modern facilities, beautiful gardens, and was easy walking distance to the CBD. I went to the Parks reception area to make a booking. I was welcomed by a nice lady, who I understood to be one of the managers. She was most apologetic but advised me the Park was unable to take any site booking beyond February 1st, 2021. The reason provided was that the council, was QLDC Response Visitors to the Queenstown Lakes district looking for a camping experience are important and QLDC’s Responsible Camping Strategy reinforces this. While it is a challenge that the Frankton Campground is closed this summer, this is to allow for the re-development and provision of new facilities here. Discussions are also underway with respect
READER FEEDBACK in discussions with the current Park operators in relation to the lease and that certain parts of the Park may become unavailable. I was advised that the council was planning to put a road through the Park to the proposed Lakeview development and this involved removing the Parks facilities buildings, which looked to me that they were only recently built. I asked was it in part because of the slowdown in Tourism due to Covid, but I was advised to the contrary, that the visitor numbers to Park have been very steady. as have been the forward bookings and inquiries. I came away somewhat dismayed, as I understand the Mayor and Civic leaders were crying out for visitors to the Town. That a large portion of these visitors are currently campers, who I imagine would be spending their money across a whole range of local services.
to the potential continuation of some part of the Lakeview Campground too. We’d recommend that anyone visiting the district and looking for a campsite takes a look at one of the many other options nearby. A list of them is available here: https://www.qldc. govt.nz/recreation/responsible-camping-inthe-queenstown-lakes-district#campgroundlocations, and the Campermate App has plenty of details about options too.
Yet here we have a council that has closed the Frankton Holiday Park at least, until late 2021 and are in the process of closing all or part of the Queenstown one. This appears to be despite previous assurances from the Mayor that the Holiday Park would remain unaffected by the adjacent Lakeview development. I came away shaking my head in dismay and surprise as to who in their right mind would close and or disestablish the majority of the area’s Holiday Parks? Has once again short term council greed got in the way of common sense? Why not maintain a CBD green space, that appears to be a very well utilized civic amenity, while providing for postive downstream outcomes ? J Adams
It’s important to note too that a proposed road through part of the Lakeview site represents the start of an initial $15m investment over 12 months into Three Waters and roading infrastructure, and once complete, further development at the Lakeview site will provide a range of residential buildings, hotels, coworking and co-living spaces, hospitality and retail options, along with reserve spaces and a contribution to affordable housing.
PARKING PROBLEMS In regard to the letter about parking in this weeks LWB I had exactly the same issues we also received 2 parking tickets within an hour for a pick up and drop off that took about 2 seconds at a taxi stand... “The two parking tickets are connected. At 18.45 pm my partner dropped me off outside Dominos pizza restaurant. The car was left running, my partner remained in the vehicle and I immediately exited the vehicle to enter the Domino s pizza shop. He dropped me off here as it was safer than stopping in the lane to drop me off, the entire area was empty and it was after 6 pm. We did not understand the signage which said that small vehicles were permitted the drop
off period took a few seconds and my partner immediately drove off to pick up my twin sons who were elsewhere. I then entered the pizza shop and ordered two take away pizzas to feed my children - we did this to minimise the time taken to organise food for them as they have ADHD and cannot tolerate waiting well, this seemed to us the best option to reduce stress all round. After picking my children up my partner drove back around to the Domino s store again to pick me up- I walked out of the store and immediately got into the car and we drove away- again the car remained on, my partner remained in the car and the whole process took a few seconds. This happened at 7.10 pm.
We were shocked when we received two parking tickets for $80 for a less than 2 second pick up and drop off. We have lived in town for 20 years and the traffic in the town centre at the moment is very low due to the lack of tourists at both the drop off and pick up the entire area outside the store was totally empty, we were in a small vehicle , not a truck and we did not park, it was simply a drive by drop off. The fact that we could be charged $80 for a few seconds pick up and drop off seems ridiculous. “ We were waived one ticket but still had to pay for one of them. Marina Seager

Coronet Peak is selling Happiness Trees for a good cause. Coronet Peak has launched their 2020 Happiness Tree campaign again this year. ‘Happiness Trees’ are wilding pines that have been cut down then repurposed for Christmas trees. For a minimum $20 donation, you can order a Happiness Tree on the Coronet Peak website and get it delivered to your door before Christmas. Coronet Peak Assistant Ski Area Manager Mark Sommerville initiated the project three years ago and says it not only helps the environment by eradicating wilding pines but supports a great local cause at a busy time of year. “Over the years we’ve raised $15,000 for Happiness House and removed over 600 wilding pines from the mountain. It’s an awesome initiative that our staff enjoy volunteering their time for and we’re pleased to be able to run it again this year.” Robyn Francis from Happiness House says they are so grateful for having support from Coronet Peak again this year.

This year the NZSki team will be sourcing wilding pines from a couple of local landowners as there isn’t a supply of them on Coronet Peak anymore – a problem which Sommerville says is great to have. “Our environmental goal of removing wilding pines from Coronet Peak was realised this year when the Wakatipu Wilding Control Group completely eradicated the trees along the mountain’s access road. “They did an amazing job culling every single tree from our harvest area, but it’s made it challenging trying to find reasonably sized Christmas trees. Fortunately, there’s a few kind landowners who have given us permission to access their land to source some trees.” Coronet Peak are looking for Volunteers to help harvest and deliver the trees. If you have some time and would like to help, get in touch with Mark Sommerville – Assistant Ski Area Manager Coronet Peak onto mark@coronetpeak.co.nz Coronet Peak has also teamed up with Wilding & Co this year to close the environmental loop. Anyone with a Christmas tree can drop them off to Wilding & Co at 362 Speargrass Flat Road in January and they will mulch for compost and use them to distil fragrant oil. Happiness Trees will be delivered on Saturday 12 December or Saturday 19 December and are available in two sizes – medium (between 90cm – 149cm) and large (between 150cm – 220cm+). They can be ordered online - https:// shop.coronetpeak.co.nz/ happiness-tree-christmas-tree Last day for orders is 4pm on December 18th.

Arrowtown’s Olive Leaf declined
CBD by Miranda Spary
Controversial plans for modern extension to a 150-year-old Arrowtown church have been declined by commissioners. The Olive Leaf building, designed by noted architect Fred van Brandenburg, was opposed by the Arrowtown Village Association (AVA). It would be a multi-functional building with a leaf-shaped floating roof, sitting next to St Patrick's on Hertford Street. The building would contain a church, community hall, a crypt, bedrooms and a kitchen. The application attracted 368 submissions when it went out for public consultation last year and 40 spoke at a Covid-delayed three-day hearing in September. Of the submissions, 218 supported the building and 150 opposed it, including the AVA. "The AVA submitted in opposition on the grounds that the building did not align with the Arrowtown Shaping Our Future community visioning document," a spokesperson for the AVA says. "In their decision the commissioners agreed that the document was relevant." Queenstown Lakes District Council also recommended that consent be refused, saying its scale and landscaping would obscure the old church. The decision is subject to appeal in the Environment Court. “The building will be embellished with natural materials to make a rich tapestry of texture and form,” reads Van Brandenburg Architecture’s website on the building. “These materials will reference the surrounding landscape with the use of regional materials.”

Miranda Spary is a tired, old, has been columnist that we feel sorry for. She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. She is quite lazy and very grateful if readers send in ideas about what’s been happening locally on miranda@queenstown.co.nz
It’s pouring with rain as I write this and I’m so grateful - it’s very nice having the sky water the garden for me although that huge wind on Thursday has ripped my pretty peonies to tatters. It was SO scary and our drive has so many huge old trees on both sides that I was too nervous to drive up it till things calmed down. In theory, this rainy day will see me doing lots of long overdue inside jobs, but I have a sneaking suspicion I’ll be lying on the sofa with VIncent O’Sullivan’s fabulous Ralph Hotere biography, “The Dark is Light Enough”. What a life he had! His wife Cilla McQueen was my French teacher, and she invited all our class of 15 and 16 year olds to dinner at their house. Ralph generously poured us oodles of wine and we smoked cigarettes and got totally plastered but also got a brilliant chance to learn about the significance of the crosses marked with numbers like 17, 23, 18, 15, 31 that he’d painted. They were the ages of the NZ soldiers killed in each row of the cemetery - his brother among them. It was a real honour to hear him talk about them, and luckily the matrons didn’t seem to realise how very drunk we were on arriving back at the boarding house. Those were the days….he’d probably have been arrested if it happened now our poor, overprotected little darlings don’t know what they’re missing. We chose another baddish weather day to head to Wanaka for a boat trip to Mou Waho. Mou what? Where? I misspent many merry days of my youth in Wanaka and I’d never even heard of this beautiful island. It’s up towards Makarora and there’s a lake on the top of it . If you haven’t been there before, I strongly recommend you do - Chris Riley at Eco Wanaka is a great guide - and there’s so much we’d never have found or noticed by ourselves. I was there writing a Wanaka story for the new SCOUT magazine - it launched last week, and sold out here very fast - there are new stocks in now, so do have a look for it wherever you buy your mags. And if you know about any wonderful places or things to do in NZ, I’d be delighted to hear about them. I’m hoping to trick the editor into thinking I’m a proper writer and get more work with them. For someone who IS a proper writer , do come to Dorothy Browns on Thursday at 4 to meet Peta Carey who will sign copies of her magnificent new book “Tamatea Dusky - Conservation and History in Fiordland’s Dusky Sound” with magical photos. I can’t wait to be writing about the new Queenstown to Clyde cycle tour which I mentioned last week, and this week we need to send in submissions of support for the Tucker Beach trail to Arrowtown via Arthurs Point - look up QLDC RM200336 and fill it in and send to rcsubmission@ qldc.govt.nz AND charlotte.clouston@jea.co.nz These trails are such a massive asset to our whole community - I’ve had a few crotchety old so and so’s saying they don’t use the trails and don’t care about them, but remember they bring lots of visitors to our area, and keep plenty of vehicles off the roads. A propos of crotchety old so and so’s, I’m horribly disappointed about the decision not to allow the Olive Leaf building next to the Arrowtown Catholic Church. Given how many absolutely disgusting buildings keep being given consent like the Mitre 10 building, those hotels disfiguring the view along the Kawarau behind the airport, not to mention the Bunnings building and ghastly hotel near it plus the Millenium, it’s a total tragedy that when something truly new and elegant is planned, it gets turned down. A much needed community asset at no cost to the community rejected. Despite that, there’s still much to be thankful for, and it was really fun going to our American friends’ house for a full on thanksgiving dinner - turkey and oodles of alcohol. I’d always thought the pilgrims were goodygoods, but apparently they were totally plastered half the time - they sailed the Mayflower very much under the influence of around a gallon of beer a day - amazing they made it across the ocean at all. Those old timers didn’t have all the OSH and health warnings to worry about. Nor did our goldminers. Don’t forget the silent auction at the museum starting on Friday - lots of locals have submitted “artworks” - I have to put it in quotation marks, as I’m one of them, and don’t have an artistic bone in my body. However, I am happy to bet $100 that mine will raise at least $100. Get along and have a see why, and bid, bid bid. There is also some surprising work showing what a decadent time those lucky old miners had when STD’s and the dangers of drug use were just facts of life, not something to be avoided.

For groups, venues are always a very good option. Themed nights and organised parties often include entertainment on the night. Those could be bands or a DJ. Food and drink would often be included as a package. The beneďŹ t of booking a venue that can supply the above is saving time and potential stress. Depending on what Christmas party package you book and in what venue it can be a clear statement to your employees that you value their work and time.

The Routeburn Track was due to fully reopen earlier this week, eight months after it was extensively damaged by a biblical storm. Tracks, bridges, campsites and huts were destroyed back in early February when more than 10% of the region’s average annual rainfall fell in three days, causing flooding and landslides and sparking a major search and rescue operation. The Department of Conservation partially reopened the Great Walk - a 33km three-day trans-alpine trek between Glenorchy and the Divide/Milford Sound - in March as a return loop on the Glenorchy side, but Monday (Dec 7) was scheduled to be the first time walkers could traverse the whole route again. “The Milford side of the Routeburn track, between the Divide and Howden Hut has sustained significant damage,” DOC Southern South Island Operations Director Aaron Fleming said in March. “Lake Howden Hut in particular has been damaged beyond repair, and there are significant landslides that have made the track unsafe.” Repairs to the track have now progressed to the stage where walkers can hike through, but Howden Hut won’t be rebuilt or replaced. It was hit by a landslide in the middle of the night. Some 440km of tracks were damaged in the storm, including the Milford Track, which reopened last Monday (Nov 30). Minister of Conservation Kiri Allan said the reopening of the Milford Track was a “milestone in the flood recovery work taking place in the Fiordland and Mt Aspiring national park areas”. “Having the Milford Track officially reopen for this year’s Great Walk season is testament to the hard work achieved by both the Department of Conservation and the many contractors involved in the rebuild work. “Like many places in Aotearoa, the Te Anau community has been hard-hit by the COVID-19 tourism downturn, and coupled with the flood damage to key recreation experiences in the area they’ve had an extremely difficult year.” Repairs across all damaged tracks is estimated to be a three-year programme. $13.7million was announced in Budget 2020 to go towards repairing vital conservation and visitor infrastructure destroyed in the February flood.

How to tell if you are not living to your full potential. Dr Amanda Foo-Ryland
Dr Amanda Foo-Ryland runs an International Neural CodingTM Company. She has 20 Neural Coders working with her around the globe, online to help people identify their problem, delete it and install neural coding that empowers them.
Do you feel like you have to please others all the time? Do you compromise your happiness and put others first? When someone compliments you, do you respond with; “Oh thanks but it was in the sale, or it’s old, or no I haven’t lost weight it’s this top, it makes me look trimmer?” Do you feel that you have lost where you are going and who you really are? If the answer is yes to any of these questions, then read on, let me explain what’s happening. The reason that you are pleasing others or as I like to call it a ‘people pleaser’ is because for a moment this allows you to feel fulfilled when they thank you, it allows you to feel for a moment what you want to feel constantly, happy with yourself. However, what’s happening is you’re looking for external gratification to give you internal gratification, this is an allusion in itself. It’s short lived and this is why you need to continue to please others, compromising your own happiness in order to get the small fixes to feel good about yourself. Now this might sound harsh and you may say, ‘Hang on Amanda this is only me for a short period of time, I don’t people please all the time!’ However, if this is a consistent behaviour, what you’re really looking for is to bring that feeling internally so that you can just feel happy with who you are and how you show up in the world. So how do you become happy just being you, how do you switch off the people pleasing switch searching for those small fixes? A client recently said to me after we had done some Neural Coding™ sessions together on just this, being herself. “Amanda, I love just being me, it is so relaxing and easy, I don’t have to ‘be’ anyone else, or think how I need to behave, it’s so calming.” I responded with; “I am delighted you love being you, cos everyone else is kinda taken.” She had never thought about this before, so often we can wish we were like someone else, slimmer, fitter, cooler,
funnier, sportier, funkier and the list goes on, we wish we were not us. You are you, wishing you were like someone else is a huge distraction, you are you, all that needs to happen now is to reconnect yourself with you, see you for who you are. Intelligent, a genius, loving, kind, caring, creative, adaptable, prograssive and your list is endless, yet we lose this when we come into older years. The sparkle gets dull, the curiosity and mystery is replaced with ‘normal.’ And we settle. Then life just ebbs and flows, we just go with it, pleasing others, compromising ourselves. If you want to find you then here’s the plan, we have a free tool for you, the only thing it will cost you is about 5 hours of your time, are you in? “Just Be Me’ is an online course, it normally retails at around $600 and we are giving it away, why? Because it works, it helps people and that’s what we do, help people.
FEEDBACK MESSAGE Hello!!!!! That was me! I am in Chicago though! Sarah Foo-Ryland and Amanda Foo-Ryland !!! As I told Sarah, I have bought 3 other course and I honestly learned more in the 5 hours watching this than with any of those others! Not only did I learn it, It has transformed me (in progress) ! It has provided me with a true path. I was so engaged in this program that I could not stop watching it! Ladies, I am committed to success! I am signing up for the Ultimate and taking advantage of this amazing one of a kind training! I am so incredibly grateful to have found you. I didn’t give up and the universe delivered. If anyone out there is on the fence, Go for it! You will be so glad you did. This is by far the best course out there. Believe me!! I have looked!!!! It’s your life! Life it!!! December Top Tips As our district grows at its current rampant pace there are emerging opportunities for veggie gardening and growing more fruit trees. You don’t have to own a house to get out there and to grow food. If you don’t own a property on one of the many new subdivisions popping up there’s an opportunity to come together and grow food together with the ‘Community gardens’ concept. Queenstown has a few springing up or in the pipeline. Shotover Country and Henleys Farm are 2 that come to mind. Wanaka also has a couple in the pipeline. Community gardens are a great place to come together but you don’t always get a patch to call your own if that’s what you’re after. In Queenstown you have ‘Queenstown Harvest Community Gardens’ in Gorge Road where you have an opportunity to get your own long term patch of gardening paradise. Don’t worry about your level of experience, you just need the desire to give it ago and put in some hard work early on, unless you’re lucky enough to take on an already established patch. You’ll be surrounded by a mix of gardeners with various experience levels who all be willing to share a word of advice. We’ve had a pretty warm spring which has been great for the veggie garden and fruit trees. Touch wood we don’t get any random late frosts from here on in. Summer is kicking off and with any luck we get a warm month and some of our heat loving crops can start taking off. 1. It’s not too late to be planting pumpkins, zucchinis, corn and tomatoes outside. Often they get moving in the heat of January. 2. Keep an eye on those weeds. It’s been a cracker of a spring already and looks set to continue. In warmer temps weeds will go to seed quickly and spread their unwanted love... Chop and drop unless they have a rhizoma root. 3. Weeds can go in a bucket of water to rot and create a weed tea. Give it a few weeks and you can pour some in a watering can and feed your crops. Ratio 10 parts water to 1 part weed water. 4. Tomatoes grow better crops when the laterals are pinched out.Otherwise you end up with Triffid Tomato bush loads of small tomatoes that won’t ripen. They also need support. A simple wooden frame about 2m tall with string to support the tomatoes on. 5. It’s a good time to get mulch on bare soil. It will slow evaporation down and feed
At Lake Hawea there’s the Hawea Food Forest which also has allotments available. Nothing like this in Wanaka yet unfortunately. So if your neighbourhood doesn’t have a community garden or allotments, see if there’s others in your area who’d be interested. As we continue to grow at an exponential rate we need these community spaces to come together to grow food, share knowledge and an opportunity to get to know like minded neighbours. Facebook seems to be the best communication tool. Then get in touch with a group who are already established or are on route to getting established. There’s a lot of vacant plots in the district and there’s community funds to apply to help get started. your plants as it breaks down. You can use straw, cardboard or even better grow your own mulch. Comfrey does this really well. Have a patch in a corner under fruit trees or a damp spot in the garden. Once established, you’ll get multiple harvests all season long. 6. One cucumber plant can feed a family and some. Pinch out some of the laterals, and top up a few times through the season with compost. Growing up a Teepee frame of some sort gets the fruit off the ground and gives you more space down low to grow other veggie delights. 7. Grass clippings are in plentiful supply!!! If putting in the compost heap, make sure you layer alternatively with a carbon source like leaves, woodchips, shredded cardboard or straw. Layers can be 5 to 10cm thick. Other options include using as a mulch in ornamental gardens and around trees etc... Make sure there’s space around plants so the grass doesn’t rot shrubs/ trees. 8. Give your garlic a little feed either with a side dressing of compost or a liquid fertilizer of some sort... Seaweed, weed tea, comfrey tea or E.M. Better still give the whole garden a little pep up too!!! Happy gardening!

LAKES WEEKLY BULLETIN
Arts+Culture Christmas Piano Concert With Christmas rapidly approaching the students of Kinga Krupa Music are busy practicing for the annual Christmas Piano Concert. It is their chance to share their skills and the festive spirit with everyone in the Wakatipu community. Kinga talked to three of the students; Mila (10), Dom (11) and Grace (17) about how they have been preparing Mila started playing the piano because she loves the sound, the high and low notes, additionally she enjoyed listening to Louis, her cousin play which ultimately inspired her to take it up. She particularly enjoys performing in front of lots of people which requires lots of practice each day to get the songs correct. Mia can’t wait to sing at the Christmas Concert which makes her heart sing.
Mila Similarly, to Mila and really all the students, Dom practices a lot each day especially now as he prepares for the Christmas Concert. While nerves play a big part before each performance, there is also enormous excitement as Dom gets to play in front of people which helps with his confidence and helps to overcome stage fright. Learning music has also helped Dom fit into a new school as his family recently moved to Australia. Dom has been able to play piano at his new school in front of 500+ students. Dom says “The kids at my school thought I was pretty cool and that I was really
good at piano”. Lessons and concerts have continued thanks to Zoom which can be projected on the screen and become part of the program. When Kinga asked about which Christmas character best describes you this year? Dom’s thought Mum would say the naughty elf, but he resonates with the gingerbread man because he likes gingerbread!
Page 27
Grace and Kinga discussed the Christmas Piano Concert preparations which have been a fun time for her, both with the anticipation and preparation of the pieces. She gets to choose the Christmas Carols, costumes, practice the music and help with the organisation of the concert. Grace has a goal to play her pieces well in front of the audience. For Grace this motivates everyone to work hard. “When the concert finally arrives and each plays their pieces, we can see that we have accomplished something big. It Dom shows us all that if we put the effort in and persist, we will accomplish what we want”. Kinga always involves the class in preparation through (MC’ing, decorating, planning, bringing other ideas to life). She believes while concert preparation is very thrilling, it is equally important in the skills it teaches us along the way: time management, dedication, commitment, etc. These skills can be transferred across many other things.
