Why would anyone what to put their hand up for Council? If you follow social media, we are all a bunch of morons. So much love. It could be easy to become disheartened. However, in the real face to face world it is very different and much more positive. I have been the Arrowtown Ward Councillor for 5 years, just on two terms and this October step down after what has been a thoroughly rewarding experience. With nominations for Council opening on 19 July I got to thinking why I stood in the first place. Hopefully my story will encourage others to take the leap of faith. It started with a shoulder tap, then another. It wasn’t my ambition to be a local government politician. Others seemed to think I had what it takes. So I got to thinking, what does it take and do I have it in me? First things first, you need an open mind and willingness to hear the other side of the story. Predetermined opinions are dangerous and not to be confused with passion. Because you need passion in spades. Passion for all the aspects of life that QLDC touches. Which is pretty much everything. For me it begins with my hometown, Arrowtown. I love the place and the people in it. I love the Queenstown Lakes District. I arrived here 22 years ago with a backpack and not much else. I became enchanted by our seatof-the-pants pioneering history from gold mining to adventure tourism. This is a district with a willingness to welcome newcomers and encourage entrepreneurship. New Zealand’s tall poppy syndrome does not exist here. If you succeed, people encourage you. I was encouraged and am eternally grateful. I wanted to keep that spirit of positivity going and help steer the ship as we navigated our way through an unprecedented period of growth. Being at the council table is exciting, challenging and meaningful. It is not a volunteer position. You get paid but not at a level where you would do it for the money. Therefore, you need to have other motivations to make it worthwhile. For me, my role representing the people of Arrowtown and the Queenstown Lakes District has given me the opportunity to repay the community that welcomed and encouraged me 22 years ago. It has also given me the opportunity to use and expand my professional skills and put them to good use directing the activities of Council through policy decision making. Although my time is nearly up, the very nature of local government is that QLDC’s time is never up. It is exciting times ahead for anyone thinking of standing in the Wakatipu, Arrowtown or Wanaka Wards. I encourage those with an interest in standing to contact me to learn more about the role. QLDC is a great organisation lead by a Council that despite the odd “bunch of morons” comment is a high functioning productive group. It’s not perfect, there is always room for improvement, and it is certainly never boring.

Dear “Bilingual and Better than you”
Are you better than “them”?
skilled migrants “stealing” kiwis’ jobs....”
You seem to have responded in the same hateful manner that you complained about.
That sounds like an excuse.
I am also a skilled migrant, I came to Queenstown 16 years ago. I read your letter. I hear your frustration. I am sorry you felt treated without respect by some New Zealanders because you are a migrant, I’ve been there and it’s not nice. I realized that it was actually the energy I was putting out and perhaps getting that in return. “You get what you give” is very real. Did you read your letter again? Are you still happy with the way you sound now that you let off some steam? Or are you embarrassed? You really insulted these lovely people who opened their door and hearts to us. Name calling is not positive. They do not deserve that. You are misinformed when you say: “... the government won’t allow doctors or engineers to work in this country in fear of
I have a degree in the medical industry, after working very hard and passing all of the required examinations, I got my registration here and I felt very welcome by NZ and all of its citizens, just the same as when I was a cleaner when I first got here, because every job and skill is important and valued in this fair country. Hopefully it all goes well for you and I hope you can stay in this safe, stable, wonderful corner of the world. But please, if you end up staying here, try to show more love, compassion and positivity so this place does not get ruined by hate as you fear in your furious letter published last week. Let’s look at ourselves more and build a proud, loving community with a bright future ahead for generations to come. Thank you for everything New Zealand!!! Spread the love. Aroha tino nui. Namaste! XXX Happy and grateful migrant
EDITOR’S NOTE: Thank you so much for your letter. We’ve had a lot of mixed responses in regards to the original letter and we feel you summed this discussion up well. We won’t be publishing any other responses around the ‘Furious Foreign Exchange’.
Consent for Deer Park Mirror Kelvin Heights, the sunshine strip. Resident posh people stripping off into t-shirts at midday, sipping fresh fruit cocktails and laughing at the huge frosty shadow that befalls on us, Marina Heights. ‘Banished from the sun’ Heights. The Heights in perpetual permafrost. I shiver, sensing them gloating. Living out their glorious winter time happy and old while I’m bitter and cold. This festering ugly hate has all come about because I’m lacking that healthy good dose of Vitamin D!!! There’s studies proving that SUN improves your mood.
Isn’t there billions going into mental health right now? All I propose is a massive mirror on Deer Park Heights that’s angled to beam it straight back to the shadowy side. A community halo sun spot! Here we can gather round and one at a time we can walk in to the sunlight. Eyes closed, head tilted up, arms turned round to reveal the whitest fleshy part of the skin and palms out thus receiving the much needed ray absorption to balance our mental state. A big mirror on Deer Parks Heights = it won’t cost much. Heighten Happiness for Marina

The girl who served me had a ring in her nose that was extremely big (the ring that is), and a large drip of snot was hanging off the ring when she served me....WTF......why would someone have a large ring in their nose in winter????? CRUSADERS vs JAGUARES Sat 6 July, 8:35pm So many what could have beens but there can be only two teams in the final. Defending champs the Crusaders scraped past the Hurricanes and it would be a big call to bet against them claiming yet another title. That said, they were well beaten in the second half of the semi-final and needed the benefit of a shocker from ref Nic Berry to secure the win. However the Canes can only blame themselves for only playing 40 mins of rugby in what is an 80 min game. I fear the Jaguares will fall into the same trap. They will need to pull off a miracle to take the trophy away from Christchurch.

Arts+Culture Art News A New Arts Precinct for Queenstown? Discussions are underway for an arts and community hub in the centre of Queenstown. Queenstown Lakes District Councillors met to discuss options for a community precinct last week (27th June). The Council have a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Ngai Tahu Property to look at development options on Stanley and Ballarat Street, which is currently occupied by parking spaces, QPACT (performing arts centre) and the Queenstown Arts Centre. Council staff have recommended QLDC and Ngai Tahu enter a partnership to develop a community precinct which could include the new council building as well as a new library, a performing and visual arts centre, a town square and commercial buildings. In a press release, Mayor Jim Boult said; “Recent research has shown that people feel we need a step change in what this district has to offer for arts and cultural activities. What this proposed partnership can deliver has the potential to be a game changer. It was originally a strong case to build the new Council office on the site. Now I think this bigger vision is a compelling no-brainer. This partnership can give us the opportunity to create a cultural and community heart for the communities of Queenstown and the wider district.”

FICTION PICKS
The Queenstown Libraries are introducing a monthly recommendations page to share some of their favourite books that come in during the month. The library is free to join for anyone living in the area so make sure you’ve got your library card! There are libraries in Arrowtown, Cromwell, Frankton, Glenorchy, Kingston, Queenstown and Wanaka. My Sister, the Serial Killer
The Suspect
(F BRA QT, Wanaka, Frankton Libraries)
(F BAR QT, Frankton and Cromwell Libraries)
Called “a morbidly funny slashfest” by The Guardian, this novel kicks off with our protagonist Korede reflecting that the hardest place to scrub clean of blood is the join between the shower and the caulking. Being the third of her sister Ayoola’s murdered boyfriends she is cleaning up the mess from, she has intricate knowledge of this now. This is certainly not a typical crime/thriller novel though, and instead a very plot driven (but with fabulous indepth characters) funny family saga with a love triangle and of course a dash of the Slashfest mentioned earlier.
The Suspect by Fiona Barton, author of Sunday Times bestsellers, THE WIDOW and THE CHILD has been hailed the most addictive and clever new crime thriller of 2019. When two girls traveling in Thailand turn up dead in a suspicious fire, journalist Kate Waters follows the story without disclosing a hidden agenda. This time it’s personal, and as the case of the missing girls unfolds, they will all find that even this far away, danger can lie closer to home than you might think.
Oyinkan Braithwaite
Selfie: How the West became Self-obsessed Will Storr
(302.302 STO - QT and Frankton Libraries)
We live in the age of the individual. We are supposed to be slim, prosperous, happy, extroverted and popular. This is our culture's image of the perfect self. We see this person everywhere: in advertising, in the press, all over social media. Where does this ideal come from? Why is it so powerful? Is there any way to break its spell? To answer these questions, Selfie takes us from the shores of Ancient Greece, through the Christian Middle Ages, to theself-esteem evangelists of 1980s California, the rise of narcissism and the selfiegeneration, and right up to the era ofhyper-individualistic neoliberalism in whichwe live now. It tells the extraordinary storyof the person we all know so intimately - ourselves.
Elephant & Piggie: The Complete Collection Mo Willems
(CR – Frankton, QT and Wanaka Libraries)
Elephant and Piggie is a book series for early readers by Mo Willems. The series is done in a comic book style, and features two friends: an elephant, Gerald, and a pig, Piggie. The books are written in conversational style with Piggie's words appearing in pink letter bubbles and Gerald's appearing in grey letter bubbles. The books often address issues of friendship. Gerald and Piggie are masters of humour that appeals to children and adults. Using misunderstandings, misheard words, and jokes, Willems infuses the books with serious laughs – great for family reading.
Fiona Barton
The Unwomanly Face of War
Svetlana Alexeivich
(940.548 ALE Queenstown Library)
Svetlana Alexievich’s book “The Unwomanly Face of War” is a history of the women that fought alongside the men on the front lines across Europe and Russia in World War 2. They were nurses, tank drivers, pilots and snipers, yet after the victory, their sacrifices were largely forgotten. Here, Alexievich chronicles their stories, their achievements and the hell they endured. “Why should their war history remain unknown? Completed in 1983, the book was at first not allowed to be published as it was contrary to the state sanctioned history of war. Despite numerous setbacks, the book became a worldwide best seller. In today’s world of sensationalism and alternative facts this book will appeal to those that can appreciate the power of documentary literature. An extraordinary and harrowing read.
Diary of an awesome friendly Kid
Jeff Kinney
(CF KIN – All branches)
Rowley’s best friend Greg Heffley has been chronicling his middle-school years in thirteen Diary of a Wimpy Kid journals... and counting. But it’s finally time for readers to hear directly from Rowley in a journal of his own. In Diary of an Awesome Friendly Kid, Rowley writes about his experiences and agrees to play the role of biographer for Greg along the way. But Rowley is a poor choice for the job, and his “biography” of Greg is a hilarious mess. Jefferson records his experiences and misguided decision to write a biography of Greg, who, in his own mind, is destined to become rich and famous.

Wakatipu Youth Trust receives $28,500 from Coronet Peak and The Remarkables Locals’ Days Queenstown Lakes locals helped raise $28,500 for the Wakatipu Youth Trust after successful Locals’ Days at Coronet Peak and The Remarkables last weekend. The two mountains welcomed thousands of residents to ski and snowboard for $20 and hire gear for $20 as part of NZSki’s annual event to raise money for a deserving local organisation. NZSki chose Wakatipu Youth Trust this year because of its longstanding relationship with the Trust. The Trust, which offers support to youth aged 10-24 through various programmes including mentoring and life skills education, has provided assistance to NZSki staff over the years. Wakatipu Youth Trust received the full amount of sales taken for the day. WYT manager Jacqui Moir says: “This is huge, I cannot say that enough – as a local charity this is massive. Wakatipu Youth Trust doesn’t get any Government funding for what we do and we work across our entire youth community in the Wakatipu. This major donation is going to make every difference to every young person we connect with.”
