What you need to know about workplace bullying. No one should turn up to their workplace and be subjected to abuse, intimidation or threats. But unfortunately, for many employees, workplace bullying is a harsh reality. Workplace Bullying can be difficult to identify, or prove that it is occurring. You might not like what’s happening to you at work – but is it bullying? In New Zealand, WorkSafe (the work place health and safety regulatory body) defines it as, “repeated and unreasonable behaviour directed towards a worker or a group of workers that creates a risk to Health and Safety.” Bullying takes many forms and can include aggressive behaviour, threats, teasing, being excluded from events, unreasonable work demands, putting unreasonable pressure on you to behave in a certain way or discriminating against an you based on personal characteristics such as race, gender, age or sexual orientation. If you believe this is happening to you, the first step to take is to check if your employer has a workplace bullying policy; read it carefully and follow the steps (employers – you’re strongly encouraged to have one of these). If there is no policy, but you wish to raise your complaint formally, you should notify your employer as soon as possible because the longer bullying continues, the more difficult it can be to address. It can be a good idea to put your concerns in writing to avoid any misunderstandings. Following a formal notification your employer must be given a reasonable amount of time to investigate the situation and undertake any disciplinary action if necessary. Business owners are under a legal duty to prevent workplace bullying, and to investigate it if notified. If you are not satisfied with your employer’s response to the situation following a formal notification, you can raise a legal claim against them in the form of a personal grievance. Anyone who is an employee in New Zealand can raise this claim under the Employment Relations Act. This claim must be raised within 90 days of the date the problem happened or it came to the employee’s attention. If the employer and employee can’t come to a resolution, free mediation services are available through the Employment Relations Authority and, if necessary, the Authority can make a ruling for the parties. If your claim is successful, there are a number of options available to you under the Employment Relations Act. First Bouquet Of The Year Queenstown is not known as an art destination, yet it still hosts a number of quality galleries with some definitely Queenstown prices.

I remember the controversies surrounding the erection of some of the local statues and sculptures and get the feeling that Art is usually on the back foot in the local scene.

Recently I discovered a new sculpture ‘hidden in plain sight’ on a lot on Frankton Rd. It seemed to arrive without fanfare, or maybe I missed it.

Anyway, bravo. It is nice to find the artistic surprises around town, whether it is a formal piece such as that or a chrome plated motorcyclist half way along Frankton Rd, or a stickman reclining against a letterbox in Kelvin Heights. There are many. Perhaps we need a little tour guide summary to help people notice these freely offered local gems.

Safety First I love sporting events in Queenstown! It’s a great way to showcase the area. And which athlete wouldn’t want to compete in the awesomeness of our landscapes. But when I drove from Arrowtown to Queenstown using the Arrowtown - Lake Hayes Rd on the 27th of December, I was quite shocked.

We get tens of thousands of overseas people in Queenstown over Christmas and New Year, all wanting to visit picturesque Arrowtown. Some of these visitors don’t drive on the left in their country, they are not used to our roads and some, well frankly, shouldn’t be allowed near a car, let alone drive one.

Cars were halfway on the opposing lane, cutting off corners and dodging weaving racers, all the while happily driving at 70kmph. Why oh why, is the road not completely closed off and traffic diverted to the Arrow Junction? Why were there no stewards to be seen anywhere? Why is this being organised in one of the busiest weeks of the year?

The Lake Hayes triathlon was in full swing and the competitors were racing towards Arrowtown. We had athletes trying to overtake each other (it is a race after all) while behind were many cars trying to overtake the overtaking bicyclists.

Any event’s paramount objective should be safety. Safety for the contestants and safety for Joe Public. Block off the road or change the dates, because this is an accident waiting to happen. Nobody wants that.

LWB Quiz Week after week I live in hope that the LWB quiz will be proof read correctly but it is few and far between occasions that this seems to occur anymore.

This week just about sent me over the top. For quite some time now I believe a template is used and no-one takes the time to read it before publication.

Facebook/Website Comments Editorial – Summer Issue The situation with Freedom Campers is that it’s a zero sum game. The more we do to assist them the more will come. What other country provides such a free ride to overseas “Freedom Campers” as New Zealand currently does or intends to do? The reality is you have a large group of people travelling around the countryside as cheaply as possible and using their new found love of nature etc as an excuse to freeload of New Zealand tax and ratepayers. They thumb their nose at us by attempting to sneak into holiday parks, library’s, local swimming pools, community centers and other facilities to undertake their ablutions and to park overnight where it suits them without regard to rights of others... You simply have to note the large amount of human and consumer waste they leave lying around were they have camped, often illegally, the large percentage of those leaving our country and not paying their illegal camping fines, to show what a regard they have of us and our slowly disappearing beautiful country. Apparently the average freedom camper brings in about $4,000 to enjoy a three month holiday. If you subtract the cost of a vehicle (which they sell and take the funds with them when they leave) the cost of fuel, 3 minute noodles, happy backy. It appears the rest they help themselves to, while disregarding the privacy and rights of ordinary New Zealanders while happily being subsided by them. FREE NEW ZEALAND

Culture Fix Poems for a World Gone to Shit Discover the amazing power of poetry to make even the most f**ked up times feel better. Libraries and Community Culture Libraries have come a long way since New Zealand’s first public library, the Port Nicholson Exchange and Public Library, opened in Wellington in 1841. One of the biggest changes is that modern libraries are incredibly accessible – it cost the equivalent of more than $700 in today’s money to be a member of the Port Nicholson library, whereas these days you just need a local residential address to join. This is one of the key aspects of modern libraries that librarian and Wakatipu Team Leader Alex Bassett wants to remind people, “We’ve got free books! The only stipulation is that you have to share,” she says. “It’s not an alien concept, but people seem to have forgotten. Libraries are here for the community to share, there’s no financial barriers and we’re not here to make money – it’s about sharing information, culture and heritage.” Alex is a RLIANZA member (Library and Information Association of New Zealand Aotearoa… yep, it’s a thing) and holds master’s degrees in Research and Heritage Management. She’s keen to buck the old-school image of libraries as silent book depositories. The Queenstown Lakes libraries, she insists, are quite different. “We’re big on customer service here and all of the staff are in this job for the care. A library is a community hub; it’s about creating connections. I once heard a comment about libraries ‘keeping the darkness at bay’ – maybe I like it because it’s a little bit of a Lord of the Rings reference/ Harry Potter-esque, but I also like it because it’s true. Libraries create enlightenment and human connection, they’re important for the wellness of a community and I think that’s really important in a place that can be quite lonely, particularly for newer residents.” She also notes that it’s not just the shared spaces and easy access that make modern libraries (including the shiny new Frankton Library) different. Alex and her team ensure that the library has a modern and progressive collection that reflects the community it serves. For example, there’s a large collection covering entrepreneurship and business startups as well as a library of international newspapers via Press Reader. Seed swaps, community workshops and cultural events also play a big part in bringing the community together – Wriggle and Rhyme, a fun music and language acquisition workshop for 0 – 2 year olds and their parents hit record attendance numbers late last year. “A library card is your passport to all kinds of good stuff,” says Alex.

A New Year. A New Track Record.

New Year’s Day spectators at Heavy Trax Hire Central Motor Speedway knew they were in for a meeting to remember when, former ‘t’ driver Jamie ‘The Duffman’ Duff (19c) not only won the race, the 28-year-old from Christchurch set a new track record of just 13.41 seconds. Jamie will be racing again on Saturday (Jan 19) where spectators are expected to see him race wheel to wheel with USA’s just turned 17 sprintcar star, Buddy Kofoid.

He Came, He Saw, He Conquered...

On December 29 under a sunny Central Otago sky, 17-year-old USA sprintcar ace, Buddy Kofoid showed the star power he’ll bring to Heavy Trax Hire Central Motor Speedway at the Civil Construction 2019 NZ Sprintcar Title on Friday, February 1 and Saturday, February 2. Buddy’s young age is important given his phenomenal racing skills. Buddy said he initially found the track an unusual shape, the surface a bit rough and tacky, and the car way too tight. Suggesting he perhaps ease into the racing was met with Buddy makes friends with a wide smile and … “I’m here to win!” which New Zealand’s youngest rising he did, winning his heat convincingly! This, sprintcar star, 18-year-old with other top heat finishes saw him line Connor Rangi (57n). up for the 25 lap feature race along with ‘t’ driver Sam O’Callaghan and defending champ Jamie Duff. Unfortunately, a worrying engine rattle during warm up saw Buddy pull into the centre field. Buddy was back for the January 1 meeting where alongside Jamie Duff he was at the front of the grid for the 20 lap sprintcar feature race. However, the highly anticipated duel between these young guns was kyboshed when officials sent Jamie to the back of the 17 car pack. Buddy then demonstrated his talent and US experience when by lap five he was threading his way through the pack and by the time he took the checkered flag was lapping lapped cars. Jan 19th will see both Buddy and Jamie set to return and spectators should expect these two outstanding sprintcar drivers go toe to toe. A further highlight for Saturday is the appearance of a horde of sidecars and an always popular burnout competition.

Drug Testing Technician Queenstown/Central Otago The Drug Detection Agency (TDDA) is the largest provider of workplace drug testing services in New Zealand, performing health and safety focused collection and screening of urine, oral fluid and hair samples from workforce personnel. No formal qualifications are required from applicants as full training and assessment in required NZ standards will be completed before the commencement of work. The required qualification is completed in a four day course run by TDDA held in the last week of Jaunary. The main requirement of this position is the collection of samples to detect the presence of illicit and prescription drugs.
