A lot of people have been asking: what is the future for retail in the Queenstown Central Business District? Their view is that it’s becoming harder for the traditional local operator to survive in an environment which commands some of the highest rents in the country. This is true. What is becoming clear is that modern retail, in boutique destinations like downtown Queenstown, now requires a step-shift, in order to survive not just higher rents, but the disruption from online shopping, easy home delivery and big box retailers and their endless carparks. DowntownQT’s view is that we want to create a unique, experiential destination, backed by good infrastructure, public transport, car parking and a civic and cultural hub. To that end, our retailers too will need to begin providing special experiences within their stores. Experiential shopping is not a trend – it is absolutely the future. It is shopping, where people make discoveries and can socialise. It’s a mix of independent stores run by retailers who carefully curate their offerings with artisan products. We already have some great examples in downtown Queenstown, with stores like Angel Divine, Williams Cottage, Decode and The Remarkables Sweet Shop beginning to demonstrate the art of experiential shopping. Rod and Gunn were on the right track, with the integration of The Lodge Bar into their store. It’s a great shame the regulators didn’t see that vision as being the right one. It was. We think as rents become more challenging, you will see smaller individual retail footprints, more collaboration, with one, two or three different retailers operating from one site and the integration of food and retail, perhaps the best example of which will be the O’Connells Shopping Centre redevelopment. As the council rolls out its massive infrastructure campaign, which will see nearly $500 million being spent over the next ten years, the fringe areas of the town centre will become very viable for smaller, future-savvy retailers. Our locals too will enjoy being able to get into town more easily. As it stands today local shoppers are very spoilt for choice, compared to towns with similar populations elsewhere. There is, of course, the big box retail at Frankton, the ability to buy anything from anywhere online and in downtown Queenstown, one of the best retail and entertainment precincts in the country (I say the world). And it’s all so close to home. The tough game now for DowntownQT, is to try and curate the mix of retailers. This is difficult, but not impossible. We work closely with landlords and have set out a vision which encourages landlords to think about who they rent their buildings to. Rather than the highest bidder, the end game is better served by leasing to the better operator. The landlords are listening. Steve Wilde General Manager DowntownQT Association

When Is A Room For Rent As A Bedroom, Not A Bedroom? When it doesn’t meet NZ standards as a bedroom. While catching up on local events, items and generally having a read of the latest LWB, a couple of us saw an item that caused concern and created a general stir of discontent. The item of concern is noticeable for those of us with experience of Kiwi tenancies and renting. But with rental pressure and travellers hoping to call a place home for abit, it would perhaps go unnoticed by a general reader, and unreported by tenants on the hunt for a place to sleep. It’s this advert which appeared in LWB (the original ad included address and phone number): Singles only room available. 5min walk to fresh choice, garden, house cleaner, unlimited fast WIFI, tv in room, no window, 3 months minimum. If correct, this is a individual who is blatantly flouting NZ’s regulations for a habitable room that it disappoints us as residents in the Wakatipu... Come off it! No window, really? That’s not ok. I hope it has a skylight... No? At the very least, if ya going to provide a tenancy and collect an income from people in our community, who have chosen your place as a home, please step it up and provide a suitable standard to live in. I’m a landlord myself and it’s not that hard to provide a habitable room let alone a nice home for someone. When is a room for rent, not really a bedroom? When it’s not habitable, at all! To spell it out nice and simple to this individual advertising for his business. (Yes, tho he didn’t include his business or his own
name the details did match a local “company” (which has been renting homes then subleting out the bedrooms). New Zealand does have laws and regulations. The Residential Tenancy Act 1986, along with the Housing Improvement Regulations 194. Both are super simple to find and understand. (1). Every habitable room shall be provided with 1 or more windows so situated in an external wall or external walls that adequate light is admitted. (2). The aggregate area of the glass of the windows of each habitable room shall be not less than a onetenth part of the area of the floor of the room. (3). The windows of each habitable room shall be so constructed that windows with an area amounting to not less than one-twentieth part of the area of the floor of the room can be opened for the admission of air. Tailgaters - Shotover Country to Glenda Drive Dropping a staff member home in Shotover Country after finishing a night shift at 5am, I was coming down towards the bridge where road safety cones are in place all the way to the Glenda Drive turn off. Where it shows 30km signage, a car comes right up the arse of me in wet weather. Then they tried to push me up to 80k, this has happened four days in a row.
Can someone actually confirm that the 30k limit is correct or are the signs there as a joke, because I’m amazed there hasn’t been a major accident.

We have a cheerleader Mayor and Council who are in sync with the big end of town in regard to unfretted growth. These are same people who tut tut about accommodation for both short and long term workers. Yet you will notice when they announce their multi-millon enhancement or new build projects, which by the way is a pure business decision to increase profits, not a word about investing in the worker accommodation that these business will require.

Meet one of Queenstown’s resident artists: JR McCormack Known for his quirky and colourful paintings of stolen teapots and back-country huts, JR McCormack is a familiar face in Queenstown’s arts and adventure sports scene. He arrived in town in the late 70s, a freshfaced chef who soon swapped knives for paddles to help establish the region’s white water rafting industry. He later helped set up the tandem paragliding operation from the Skyline gondola, “Basically, I wore a crash helmet to work for approximately twenty years,” he says. “I fondly call this period my ‘front-line duty’, chuck in a five-year stint as a medical ski patroller and you can probably guess that my body needed a rest so in 2000, I became a full-time artist.” Prior to 2000, JR had developed his skills as an artist during ‘injury down-time’. Speaking about his painting style, he says he prefers to label it as, “simply JR McCormack.” “However, my artistic critics/peers like to describe my blend of art as often quite minimalistic, with a surreal bent, sometimes intertwined with a sprinkle of political overtones.” He says the word ‘inspiration’ doesn’t resonate well with him – “it’s a word used mainly by non-artists trying to understand where art comes from... there was never a light bulb moment for me, the creative brain was there from the very beginning as familiar as my legs, penis and arms... learning to control it and allowing it to mature were the key elements.” JR maintains that working as an artist in Queenstown is no different to working anywhere else, “all the challenges come from within and they are there wherever you go, like a little puppy dog chained to your ankle,” he says. Though he adds that having Coronet Peak and a myriad or trails on your doorstep is an advantage when he gets sick of the studio. Currently based in the studio above The Ivy Box gallery on Park Street, he’s busy working on a series entitled ‘Classic Kiwi Huts’. “I tend to disappear regularly into the slightly off-the-beaten-track where beautiful old bush huts live, which are so much part of Kiwi history and are so personal to trampers who find them there. Culture Fix Unknown Melbourne-based artist wins world’s richest prize Little-known Melbourne artist Lynn Savery has won the world’s richest arts prize. The Australian Doug Moran prize for portraiture was established 30 years ago and awards A$150,000 to the winner. Lynn Savery has a background in furniture design, and a PhD in international politics and human rights but more recently, she’s spent her time caring for her father, who had dementia until he died in February this year and her husband, who has cancer. This is her first portrait, first oil painting and the first time she’s been accepted into a painting prize – until now, painting has simply been her “respite”. Lynn Savery’s entry was up against the work of well-known, award-winning artists like Vincent Fantauzzo and Nick Stathopoulos. Judges reported that the self-portrait was chosen unanimously for its emotion, attention to detail and sophisticated use of colour.
