As you read this the US is voting in their mid-term Congressional elections. This may curb the President’s capacity to change the world in his own image, but it’s unlikely to curb the vitriol and polarizing environment coming out of that country. President Trump represents constituents who felt they didn’t have a voice in politics and they are a group that are frightened and angry. What does this have to do with Queenstown? I think plenty! We are not immune to international trends and the lurch to the hard right is also happening throughout much of the world and many of the same issues are prevalent in Queenstown. The first issue is the conduct of our institutions, which came to a head back in 2009 when the Global Financial Crisis happened. The bedrock institutions, especially the financial institutions, were shown to be unethical, corrupt and self-serving, all at their customers’ expense. Their behaviour led to the market crash because there were no institutional checks in place and western countries, including ours, relied on self-regulation. This turned out to be a mistake and we all paid (and are still paying) the price. By the way, not one senior financial executive paid any price, let alone went to jail, in fact quite the opposite – we (through the Government) bailed them out and on they went unchecked. The second issue is that faith in the democratic system and politicians is declining. A reason is the political system is open to special interests, including foreign government interference. There is much publicity about Chinese interference in our system. Lastly, the 2009 GFC started a massive shift in the size and influence of the middle class, which is shrinking rapidly, leaving many families to no longer believe their children’s future will be better than their own. Wealth is being consolidated into a much smaller group, the super-rich, while the majority are not seeing their incomes rise while the cost of getting into the housing and investment market gets away. The service industry, which is the bedrock of our economy, continues to function at or just above minimum wage while the cost of living is rising – particularly the cost of rent, petrol and fresh food.

This especially impacts Queenstown and while there are some efforts around affordable housing it’s insufﬁcient and doesn’t directly deal with the causes that are driving housing unaffordability. The issue is getting more and more traction. The seeds that have created the political environment in the US are prevalent here and we must guard against them getting a foothold. Income inequality is a serious issue and as it gets worse the language of creating scapegoats, demonizing people and social media abuse will also grow and I for one don’t want that for Queenstown.

Road Safety

Just yesterday another person died on our roads from just a simple decision to overtake at the wrong time (tbc from the news reports). Today, not a day later, in my 10 minute drive from Frankton to Queenstown I witnessed a car blow through a red light at 70km (thank god the pedestrian had finished crossing), 2 cars cross to the wrong side of the road just to skip a 2 car queue to turn off and 2 cars drive in the cycling lane, again just to avoid a queue of about 5 cars... and none of these cars had the typical rental car number plate holders. We point the finger at tourists and the unimaginable bad driving often (including me), but we also need to realise that our frustration at tourists and our congested road

systems are just leading to more and more risk taking and risk by those that live here in our community. It a self-fulfilling negative cycle of “if you can’t beat them, join them” and I am sad that it is becoming our community culture in terms of what is acceptable on our roads. Is it worth asking ourselves if our friends, families and people we care about on the roads deserve better? If so we have to lead the way, all of us, by doing the right thing, all the time. It won’t happen without us.

Hangzhou Sister City Why on earth is ‘Queenstown’ considering a sister city relationship with a Chinese City of 9 million??! Queenstown is fast losing respect within NZ for selling out to tourists that clog the roads and CBD that has no interaction with the locals.

The worst thing is that we are paying for it through tax dollars! Who’s asking for this?? Come on Jim, DQ and whoever else is trying to fill ‘our’ town with ‘high spending tourist dollars’. Look after the locals and think of Queenstown’s true values.

Quoted from a recent article our Mayor says - “Boult says Queenstown, as a fast-growing resort, can also learn from how Hangzhou’s handled its own staggering growth”. It is worth explaining that a Sister City relationship is not a business development opportunity nor a mechanism to grow tourism. The concept of a Sister City is one of a broad-based, long-term partnership between two communities that can provide exchange opportunities and share learnings in arts and culture, youth and education, business and trade, community development and much more.

A large barrier to creating more accommodation in this area is the cost of compliance and development contributions and general red tape and hurdles just getting the project through the planning stage. There are many homes in this area that could be built on or modified to provide additional flats, etc. But when you start delving into the large amounts you have to pay to council before you even start on the project and the realisation that it will take years to see any return on your project is all very off putting to the point you decide it is not worth the bother.

It is important to connect with cities, communities or regions international that share similar challenges to provide maximum benefit to both parties. Guilin City in China has been experiencing significant growth in tourism and population, and there would undoubtedly be opportunities for us to share learning on how to ensure this growth can be managed sustainably and add value to the resident communities.

Actually, the majority of bad drivers that I see around the CBD on a daily basis are the so-called local professional drivers. Including the twat who on Friday thought it was okay to reverse over the footpath nearly taking out a few pedestrians. When challenged, all he could retort with were a few choice swear words and that he was a professional driver.

The questions I would ask is; Would it not make sense that this should be undertaken on daily basis by those people engaged to undertake the CBD clean? Is the person who is tasked with overseeing the CBD, who I take it is Town Centre Manager being held to account for the poor upkeep and ever deteriorating standard of the area? Is the QLDC enforcement team issuing notices to those people who are flagrantly littering in the area? Perhaps the Mayor and Councillors with CEO could assist by taking a walk or drive around some areas of the town before council meetings then they might ask themselves why and reflect on why Queenstown is such an unkempt mess.

Comedy Night with Dai Henwood and Mickey D Two world-class comedians for one night only. Dai Henwood is known for his role on comedy panel show 7Days and as host of Family Feud. Mickey D has performed internationally from BBC2’s Comedy Shuffle to South Africa’s hit travel show Going Nowhere Slowly.

This week, the Central Otago Regional Choir will celebrate more than a decade working with conductor John Buchanan with a series of concerts. John formed the choir in 2004, drawing choristers from throughout Central Otago and conducting dozens of successful concerts, including at Wanaka’s Festival of Colour. Choir Chairperson Chris Allan says that John has made a huge contribution to the music scene in Central Otago. “As well as being musical director for the Central Otago Regional Choir, he runs Dunstanza, the Dunstan High School choir and the Dunstan Senior Girls’ Choir, both of which have received national awards,” she says. “John believes that music is for everyone and that everyone can sing or play an instrument. His encouragement and direction has made the choir what it is today and the Viva Vivaldi concerts will be a celebration of that.” The concerts will feature a selection of the choir’s favourite shorter works from performances over that last ten years, including Haydn’s elegant ‘Concerto in D’ for harpsichord and Eric Whitacre’s ‘The Seal Lullaby’. The choir will be accompanied by a string quartet from Dunedin’s Symphony Orchestra, with additional colour provided by piano, oboe, bassoon and trumpet. Kemp English, one of New Zealand’s leading concert performers will also join the choir on harpsichord. The second half will feature Vivaldi’s ‘Gloria’. “It’s a stirring work which should have the audience on the edge of their seats,” says Chris. “The choir is so excited to be performing this music with the challenge of a new work and enjoyment of singing its favourite pieces too.” Viva Vivaldi will be held on 9th November, 7:30pm at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church on Stanley Street. Tickets will be on sale at the door and at local businesses. There’ll also be performances in Wanaka (10th) and Alexandra (11th).
