Possums, stoats, rats… Mammalian predator control in New Zealand is unreservedly a wicked problem. A difficult, messy and expensive problem involving competing reasonable goals with conflicting agendas and moral opinions. As long as the ethical disagreements remain, there’ll be no solution that is perfect for everyone. Attempts are merely better or worse than the next. How do we decide what is better or worse? Usually we make these judgments without even thinking about it, as a result of criteria inherently sustained, also known as our morals. With so many different ethical views and criteria on the table, which should we follow when making decisions about control methods? The utilitarian’s morals? The basis of these ethics is: the greater good wins. Possums, stoats and rats far outweigh the precious endemic birdlife they feast on, so they are the majority and deserve to live, right? However, the utilitarian considers the entire ecosystem and potential consequences on the infinite sum of wildlife, plant life and effects on humanity – clearly trumping a few abundant species of mammal. If a species is under threat, it adds to the weight of the argument; the impact on dependent young and other issues are also considered. If we follow this ethic, we might suggest anything which achieves pest eradication, including sodium fluoroacetate (1080), is the right course of action. Do we follow the deontologist’s morals? These ethics hold firm beliefs of what is right and wrong – more interested in the actions than the consequences. For example, you might believe it’s wrong to interfere with genetics, including bio-engineering possums to reproduce only males, eventually breeding themselves out of the game… trapping and toxins like 1080 start to look like ethically better options. There is also a duty involved with doing the right thing: as humans brought the pests here, do we now have a responsibility to get rid of them? Or is the principlist’s moral criteria the one to follow? The one that says no living creature should be harmed and one is not worth more than another. This ethical model might propose we walk away from attempts to control the invasive predators extending their domain in New Zealand’s forests, gradually collapsing habitats and ecosystems. Principlist ethics also say it is wrong to mistreat DOC staff who are only doing their job, and you can’t have your cake and eat it too.

We may never completely eradicate the furry foes now calling New Zealand home, but we certainly won’t make a lot of progress toward representing and satisfying everyone’s moral ground if we can’t unite. Let’s find a different criteria for deciding which methods are better than others: a tailored ethical framework for this wicked problem. It’s going to require open dialogue and open minds to get there. When we pose the difficult and passionate questions or opinions about 1080 to each other, we need to be willing to listen to the responses – all of them. The Case Of The Unsolveable Sudoku

Dear Mr Weekly, My name is Joe Sams and I’m a fond reader of your paper, never too much politics, never too much bad news and always a laugh or two. Now that being said I must bring to your attention my absolute horror this Tuesday morn when I happened apon your paper. As I said earlier I’m a simple man, I’m not one for jet boating or sky diving, a hot cup of tea and a good book and I’m content. So you can probably imagen my absolute devistation when I sit down to do my weekly Lakes Weekly sudoku. (Of which I consider myself quiet the pro) I attempted once spending 20 minuets solving and I’m stumped, I must of made a mistake, so I attempted again, but wrong again. On my third and final try (after a full hour) I have to conclude it’s unsolvable!

ASK ME Has Queenstown reached the point of overtourism?

Surly not! I hear you shout. But surly so! I even went to the interweb for help. Going against all my morals and entering your sudoku into an ‘online sudoku solver’ (I know this is poor sudokuing but the ends justify the means). And the internet tells me it can not be solved. I’m sure you understand this is a very serious issue and I assume someone has already noticed this critical error and the re-print is on it’s way. I look forward to your reply,

We were concerned that we had printed a ‘broken sudoku’ so we sent it off to our Sudoku expert in Australia. It turns out the Sudoku is solveable and we have included photograhic proof.

The $2 Business Killer Last year the QLDC introduced the 2-dollar bus which as a rate payer I subsidise. I was all for this knowing there are lots of hard working folks in Queenstown that need to get to work, shops or wherever they need to go without paying parking or just don’t have a car. Then I find out this service is also for the hordes of tourists Queenstown attracts, this is what my whinge is about. There are a multiple of small business that service the tourist industry that have now been made redundant by an almost free bus service, why would tourist pay for an airport shuttle, taxi or a local tour when they can pay $2 on a bus? The only company that’s making anything out of this is a large bus company that is not even from Queenstown.

So QLDC wanted to remove some of the traffic with this service, yep that’s working just drive down Frankton Rd at 5pm to see the result. The tourist who rent cars have not changed just the ones who would have normally used a small operator now jump on a big yellow road block and pay bugger all. Thanks, QLDC for destroying the livelihood of local small transport operators just so a tourist who has paid hundreds of dollars to get to Queenstown can have a cheap bus ride.

Response from QLDC Thanks for your comments and we’re sorry to hear you’re not a fan of the service. It was actually introduced and is run by the Otago Regional Council who is responsible for public transport in the region and we’d be happy to pass on your comments. The feedback we’ve received from them is that the service is being well used by visitors and locals with many CBD workers choosing to use it every day.

QLDC’s vision as part of the 2018-2028 Ten Year Plan is to see a range of transport options that includes buses, cars, cycling and longer term options such as ferries and potentially a mass rapid transport option, all of which give locals and visitors choices about how they travel in and out of town.

What a load of CR## from the QLDC response, please tell us, how many abandoned vehicles have been related to “ongoing legal proceedings” over the past year? Heres my guess, less than one. QLDC thinks that we, the general public are all idiots, and try to level this sort of answer on us, they are shirkers of the highest order and think they can fob reasonable questions off with such answers. The worst thing is, they get away with it. Same as when they said “you can get an infringement ticket for $100 if you discard a cigarette butt in a public street”. I asked a very simple question, “how many infringement notices have they issued over the last year”? Of course there was no answer, but I found out later from an employee there that they had in fact issued NONE. As I expected.

MR GREENY In Response To ‘Air Bnb The Whole House’- 672 So you’re saying it would be ok if anyone rents a house and get all the rooms on Air BnB separately and make a profit out of it? Wouldn’t it be just a hostel and therefore should be taxed and inspected as such? I know people on both ends and I know for a fact home owners get away with a lot of things that commercial businesses don’t and that’s why Air BnBing all the rooms in the house shouldn’t be allowed - or at least be put in the same bracket as hostels and the like. Let me be clear: if you own the house - not renting and not paying mortgage - and live there yourself then by all means rent the spare rooms as you see fit. But once you decide not to live there and rent everything separately your place should be in the same bracket as hostels - taxes and inspection wise.

1080 FactBox What is it?

Why is it used?

1080 is the common name for sodium fluoroacetate – a colourless salt that’s used as a metabolic poison. The active ingredient, fluoroacetate is identical to a substance that occurs naturally in many poisonous plants, but the 1080 used in New Zealand is manufactured by the Tull Chemical Company in Alabama, in the United States. It’s then made into pellets by Animal Control Products Ltd (ACP), a Crown-owned company. Baits include cereal baits, carrot baits, paste and gel baits. The commonly-used cereal baits are mixed with bran, kibbled grain and sugar to make them more attractive to pests. They’re also dyed green and flavoured with cinnamon to make them unattractive to native birds.

How long has it been used in New Zealand? 1080 has been used in New Zealand for pest control since the mid-1950s, though regulations around how it is used have been firmed up in recent years. It is the only poison registered for aerial drops and is also used in Australia, USA, Mexico and Israel. New Zealand uses about 80% of the world’s production of manufactured 1080. Aerial drops (by helicopter) are considered the most efficient method of reaching remote and difficult-to-reach areas.

How does it work?

In its natural state, New Zealand is an aviary – almost all our native species are birds (bats and sea lions are the only exceptions). Introduced predators like possums, rats and stoats pose a huge threat to native wildlife and flora like rata, kamahi, pohutukawa. New Zealand is unique in its ability to use 1080 because countries like Australia also need to protect their native land mammals. Proponents believe it is currently the only cost-effective method to rapidly reduce non-native predator numbers and save our endangered native species. Opponents say it is inhumane and some are concerned about unintentional (and sometimes fatal) effects on dogs, livestock and more curious birds like kea.

What are the risks? It’s a poison – so it is toxic to many animals including livestock, dogs and humans if ingested. There have also been reports of animals dying after eating prey which had 1080 in its system. 1080 is highly water soluble and quickly breaks down in water – current evidence shows significant water contamination is unlikely, but some opponents have voiced concerns over the impact of 1080 on the health of fish.

If enough 1080 is ingested by an animal, the poison will disrupt the process of breaking down food into energy. The animal’s cells stop working and it dies from heart or respiratory failure in 6 – 18 hours. Some animals can suffer problems with their central nervous system, causing convulsions, before dying.

Queenstown’s schools have abundant talent but until now students skilled in Kapa Haka and Pasifika dance had to travel to Invercargill to showcase their moves. Next week (24th and 25th October), the Murihiku Maori and Pasifika Cultural Trust, and young people from across Otago will celebrate Maori and Pasifika culture in the region’s very first Polyfest. Organiser Tania Carran says the festival idea came about when teachers in Queenstown schools expressed concern about the rising costs of travelling to Invercargill. “The Invercargill Polyfest attracts around 7,000 performers and 30,000 spectators. Many Central Otago schools have been travelling to the event but that can cost quite a lot of money, so we decided to run an event in Queenstown. “The response has been overwhelming, we hoped we’d get enough groups to run a one-day event, but to have 30 groups sign up almost overnight – enough for a two-day event – we’ve been blown away!” The event has taken more than 500 volunteer hours to put together – not including the hours of practice and rehearsals students have put in. Tania adds that the Queenstown business community has been supportive too, “we’ve been overwhelmed by their kindness in helping us to prepare – they’ve really welcomed us,” she says. Groups from preschool to Year 8 age from Queenstown Primary School, Arrowtown Preschool, Mt Aspiring College and many others will perform at the Queenstown Memorial Centre. The festival begins on Wednesday 14th with a powhiri at 10am and entry is by gold coin donation.

Stunt Leaves Art World in Shreds Infamous artist Bansky left the art auction world in tatters earlier this month when one of his most famous artworks self-destructed after being sold for a record £1.04m at auction. ‘Girl With Balloon’ was the final item in an auction at Sotherby’s in London, but once the hammer went down, the artwork passed through a shredder built into its frame while action-goers gasped (and giggled). Staff quickly carried the artwork out of sight – its fate (and the identity of the buyer) are currently unknown. Banksy later posted a video on Instagram of a shredder being installed in the frame by a hooded figure, followed by the text: “In case it was ever put up for auction.”
