Overcoming anxiety to discover a new passion. As a second-generation retailer, selling had always been a passion for me. Seven years ago, I discovered what it was about retailing that gave me a such a deep sense of satisfaction. I was involved in a church-based community group that worked with people who struggled with a variety of issues on a daily basis. As I spent time with people, I realised that it’s people I am passionate about and that the retail environment up to that point had been the method of interacting with them. So, after a bit of persuasion from some significant people in my life, I applied to Bethlehem Tertiary Institute and began a completely new journey of studying for a degree in counselling. From the beginning I knew that it wasn’t going to be easy, as I had always told myself that I was too dumb to ever study at tertiary level – it’s interesting how that came to the surface and the problems that this lack of confidence created for me. For the first time in my life I became aware of high levels of anxiety that I could not control. No amount of self-lecturing, or self-discipline could keep this thing silent in me. In the months and years of study that followed, I began to understand that this wasn’t a matter of who I was, but more the result of the environment I was raised in. As the daughter of an alcoholic, I came to understand that my father’s alcoholism had created a very stressful environment for our family and that children of alcoholics can acquire biological and psychological vulnerabilities that follow them into adulthood, which if not addressed can become permanent disabilities.

People function through self-images, which usually shift and respond to changes in their life. In a stressful situation, we can become victim to distortions in our self-image. In my case, embarking on study more than 30 years after leaving school, brought back all the feelings of inadequacy I had around learning. Narrative Therapy is one of the skills that I have learnt that has been particularly helpful in understanding and overcoming my struggle with anxiety. It can be used to help a person gain a new and different understanding about themselves, rebuilding their self-esteem and their resilience to adversity, stress and depression. This is the part of counselling that really excites me. I am passionate about helping people to find out who they really are and to discover a quality of life that they never thought possible; in a nutshell to become fully alive. Air Bnb The Whole House?

Is that even legal? I mean if there’s nobody actually living there and all the rooms are on Air BnB doesn’t it make it a hostel? A very expensive highly unregulated and probably taxfree hostel..? And if it is illegal shouldn’t it be some government agency to check for irregularities and put an end to it?

I know for a fact that banks incentivise new buyers to rent the rooms and make money to pay the mortgage which in itself doesn’t sound right, but to get the whole house on Air BnB seems pretty sketchy to me...

Bus Stop Culture A couple of weekends ago, my husband and I were attending a friend´s birthday party in town. Being good, responsible locals, we decided to take the bus. We were planning to have a few drinks and getting the coach seemed like the right thing to do. We live in Arthur’s Point, so our bus timetable says that the bus comes every hour and 6 minutes. We were at the bus stop at 7pm waiting for the 7:06 bus. I was inside the bus shelter, and my husband was outside keeping an eye on the bus. The bus appeared around the corner, so we both made a point to be in the waiting area. To our surprise, the bus passed and didn´t stop. My husband and I were puzzled, annoyed and could not understand what we did wrong. I felt the bus driver was going pretty fast and just couldn´t be bothered stopping.

So, we couldn´t wait for another hour and had to take the car into town and leave it there. At the party, we commented on the story to our friends, and we were told we had to signal the bus to stop. Others said that the bus should have stopped for us. We were clearly waiting for the bus, otherwise what was a couple doing at 7pm standing at a bus stop? So, Queenstown peeps… Is there a bus etiquette that we missed? How precise do you need to be for a bus driver to stop? Are we missing something here or the driver just couldn´t be bothered?

Daniel, in every other town and city in NZ, the location of the Central Post Office is regarded as the “centre of town”. Distances to various places are measured from the “central point”... ie the Central Post Office, so why change it? Also, if I had a Shopping Mall in Queenstown, it appears that there is nothing to stop me calling it “ The Arrowtown Shopping Mall”. No doubt that could easily confuse all tourists no end, and probably upset a lot of shop owners in Arrowtown, but according to QLDC there is nothing to stop someone from doing that. Go figure.
