Whāia e koe te iti kahurangi; ki te tuohu koe, me maunga teitei. Māori language week has been and gone, but there is another Māori initiative that continues until the end of the month: Māhuru Māori, a Māori language challenge for fluent Māori language speakers to only speak te reo Māori for the entire month. Māori culture is a big part of New Zealand’s identity and my personal hope is that all New Zealanders and non-New Zealanders alike, would want to experience a piece of it. In multi-national Queenstown it may seem hard to find that unique Māori experience, but the opportunities are there. The Kiwi Haka performance group can be found performing at local events. SIT offer year-long Māori language courses from absolute beginner to full immersion. Southern REAP offer shorter, bite-sized Māori courses. The schools and pre-schools in the region have fantastic Māori kapa haka (action song groups) supported by teachers and parents who are knowledgeable in tikanga (Māori language and customs). There are local community groups for other Māori activities, including waka ama (outrigger canoeing) and mau rakau (Māori weaponry). There are also local groups who meet to learn te reo Māori or to sing waiata (Māori songs). During my time as a kaiawhina (teacher’s aide) for the local reo courses delivered through SIT and Te Wānanga o Aotearoa, I have been inspired by the nonMāori and non-New Zealanders who have completed our courses. The common stories from tauira (students) is that they were encouraged to learn te reo at their workplaces; by their children, who return home from school reciting Māori phrases or songs; or by their own personal interest in knowing more about Māori culture.

My story is also common among Māori. It is a story of procrastination. In these modern times we make time for everyone else, but rarely for ourselves. I had convinced myself that I had other more important priorities in my life. A few years ago, I watched an interview with NZ actress Jennifer Ward Lealand, where she and the interviewer spoke only Māori. That was the inspiration I needed to put the learning of my language higher than my other priorities. So for those who want to take that first step in learning the Māori language, I offer you this: Whāia te iti kahurangi ki te tūohu koe me he maunga teitei. Pursue your most treasured aspirations, if you bow your head, let it be to a lofty mountain. Before I sign off, it is right to acknowledge those in the community who promote Māori language and culture. Nō reira, ngā mihi nui ki ngā tangata katoa i roto i tēnei rohe, e tautoko ana i te kaupapa Māori. Due to some big events at Queenstown Events Centre, the Rockatipu climbing wall is currently closed and will reopen on Wed 10 October. Drivers Of Arthur´s Point Slow Down, Please!
The road code is clear - 20 km/hr when passing a school bus zone. It is the law, and we must comply. So to remind this fact to some drivers, this is the information posted in the NZ Transport Authority website.
All I see these mornings is people driving their cars without a care in the world. I´ve seen people driving so fast that many of the parents present have made a point to show them to slow down with their hands. It is terrifying.
If a school bus has stopped you must slow down and drive at 20km/hr or less until you are well past (no matter which direction you are coming from) if:
What is going on? Is Queenstown a free zone where no rules apply? Is it going to take a horrible accident and a hurt child for people to understand that they MUST slow down when kids are around?

The bus displays a school bus sign on which the lights are flashing, or

The bus shows a school bus sign (with or without flashing lights) and has stopped to pick up or to drop off school children.
So - Why do drivers passing the Arthur´s Point bus stop area not comply with this? Why do they think 80km/hr or 100km/hr is acceptable when there are children around? Are they unaware of the law or just stupid and don´t care? This is what I see every day when I walk my son to the Arthur´s Point bus stop to wait for the school bus. Many locals use this great service, and their kids take the school bus. Parents love it, and children love it too.
Children are unaware of the danger, especially if they are playing and having a good time with their friends. They do not think of the danger. That´s why we as a society must look after them. Please, people. Can you stop and think for a minute and protect what is most dear to us. It is not hard to slow down and pay attention. We have many children at the bus stop waiting in the mornings. So, now that the kids are on holiday we can use this time to work on understanding our driving rules. Let’s keep our children safe when they come back next term. Please. I beg you

Lets Do Drive In Movie Again Just wanted to say thanks to Remarkables Park for the drivein movies over the weekend. It was brilliant alternitive way to spend Friday night.
I love Daylight Saving because after work I can get out and enjoy a few hours of daylight after work, have a BBQ or go for a bike ride. Why don’t we have this opportunity all year round. There are also some compelling reasons for Daylight Savings all of which are as relevant, all year around. Studies have shown we are happier because on the increased exposure to the sun as it supports increased production of Vitamin D. Others have found DST helps alleviate depression. It also makes us feel safer. Increased daylight in the afternoon reduces the incidence of robberies and less assaults. If it was still light when you are

FACEBOOK/WEBSITE COMMENTS Editorial - 669 Glyn... best you go to google, and read the ORC’s vision on the Alpine Fault, and what is is about to do to Queenstown and Frankton areas. They predict huge changes in the next twenty years, enjoy it while you can is their theory. According to them, there will be nothing standing in Frankton and it appears that there will be a few more “hazzards” on the Jacks Point golf course.But what do they know... apparantly, what happened in CHCH is a “non event” compared to what this area is going to get. We are heading back to the Stone Age according to ORC, so maybe you should hold off on the “big plans” until after the main event.

Psyco do you not realise that Frankton IS now central Queenstown. It is the geographic centre of town with all the housing developments in Lake Hayes, Shotover Country, Bridesdale Farm, Jacks Point, Henley Farm and the soon to be developed Ladies Mile massive housing developments. All the shops are out there (unless you count info centres) and the QLDC should look into the future and build their HQ there to make it accessible for people to visit. Once a few more hotels, bars and cafes open up in Frankton Flats you wont see any locals in the current town area, it will just be left for some toursits - and QLDC staff. The current CBD should be named Queenstown Bay to make it sound quaint for the tourists and Frankton will naturally become central Queenstown.
In Praise Of Daylight Saving Time Horray - finally its DST again. I really hate standard time through winter - dark in the morning on the way to work and dark in the evenings on the way home again. No time in the sunlight at all for those who work during the week. Why can’t we stay in DST all year around and make that the standard time for New Zealand?

driving home there is less chance of traffic accidents and in daylight we are more likely to walk places rather than jump in the car which is better for us and the environment. It just makes sense. For those businesses who complain about having to be open in the morning when it’s dark and there are no customers - perhaps they could consider opening later in winter (10am, like sensible countries, actually that should be all year round). If we didn’t change it also means all the pesky issues at changeover time would be avoided. All those non digital clocks wouldn’t need changing and that painful getting used to different time changes twice a year would all be avoided.

You’ve been the Chair of Catalyst Trust now for some time. Tell us a bit about the aims of the trust? Catalyst Trust is about making Queenstown a place for mental as well as adrenal challenge. We aim to up the ante on ideas that matter by bringing compelling speakers, provocative thinking and creativity to the Wakatipu. We also encourage informed community discussion of public issues - like our recent affordable housing forum. What are you now working on? MindJam this Labour Weekend at Yonder. It’s a chance to tickle your brain as we tackle the big issues in informal conversations with some of NZ’s leading thinkers. That’s very different for Queenstown, how did you come up with the concept? Otago University’s Tony Ballantyne asked Catalyst to work with them on a mini humanities festival. We decided to coincide with Queenstown Jazz Festival and apply its disruptive approach to academia. The Jazz Festival isn’t happening this year, but MindJam was such fun mind fodder, we are continuing anyway. Why is Catalyst Trust so close to your heart? Because I feel our community is made richer when people come together to learn, think, discuss and debate. Keeping our Facebook and webpage communities up-to-date with other events that might interest or challenge our minds builds that community further.
What are the topics and tell us about the speakers? Our speakers are all Otago University specialists, except for our “Frankenstein Live – a monster and its maker” launch, featuring international bioethics expert Dr Susan Lederer. You can sandwich your Saturday lunch with Contested Countryside (the new and very public politics of farming) and Genetic Jeopardy (why should you care about your whakapapa?). And on Sunday, we look at the future of work in an AI world and, 250 years after his first Pacific voyage, ask the question, Captain Cook – WTF? WINE AND ART FOR THE EXPLORERS OUT THERE Wine and art are a classic pairing, but it’s not often the two are as intrinsically linked as this. Domaine Thomson Wines owner, David Hall-Jones, has spent many years collecting sketches and paintings created by his great-grandfather, John Turnbull Thomson. Born in 1876, Thomson was chief surveyor of the Otago Province – it was his job to map the region. He was also responsible for the design, construction and naming of several notable engineering works in southern New Zealand. As he travelled across the region on horseback, Thomson wrote about, sketched and painted the landscapes and the people he saw. Many of the region’s early travellers and explorers didn’t – or couldn’t – record their adventures, so Thomson’s depictions of Otago and Southland are rare glimpses of the tough life and the raw landscape of the late 1800s. David Hall-Jones named his Cromwell-based vineyard in honour of his legendary great-grandfather. Hall-Jones and the team at Domaine Thomson Wines will now showcase Thomson’s fascinating artworks alongside the winery’s latest vintages which are appropriately named ‘Surveyor Thompson’ and ‘Explorer’. To be successful you will possess:
Shuttle Driver/Rental Return Agent

A relevant qualification in hospitality/hotel management field is desirable.
•
We are currently recruiting for a Shuttle Driver, based at our Queenstown Branch, full time basis. The goal of this role is to enhance the reputation of the company by ensuring our customers are greeted and farewelled in a friendly and timely manner. It includes transporting the customers between our rental branch and the Airport Terminals
At least 5 years’ experience in a hotel/front office environment, ideally within a strata management structure.
