The Torpedo7 Peak to Peak Back in 1993, I was asked by Destination Queenstown to create an event that linked The Remarkables with Coronet Peak (and Queenstown sandwiched in the middle), for the Queenstown Winter Festival. The Remarkables was not so well known as a ski area back then, but the town as a whole was synonymous with adventure, sports and mountains. So, the Peak to Peak was born; a 44km multisport race linking the two ski areas. We’re now gearing up for the 25th annual event, this Saturday 11th August. Competitors will ski or snowboard from the top of The Remarkables, mountain bike down the access road to Frankton before jumping in a kayak to paddle across Lake Wakatipu to Queenstown Bay. They’ll then run to Arthurs Point and cycle up to the Coronet Peak base building to finish on the snow. Easy! Thanks to support from the likes of Torpedo7, the Peak to Peak has remained pretty much the same over the past 25 years – few other events can claim that. It’s much-loved by New Zealand’s top multisport athletes who use it as a ‘winter warmer’ in what’s typically a quiet season for multisport races. But it’s not all about the pro athletes. The 2017 event saw a field of more than 300 competitors, including teams and individuals from local schools and businesses. Over the years, we’ve had loads of locals and weekend warriors tackle the race as an individual, or as a team. It’s a fantastic event if you want to get into multisport and there’s nothing quite like standing atop The Remarkables, at the start line, glimpsing the Coronet Peak finish line in the distance. In the last quarter-of-a-century, it’s been encouraging to see young athletes grow into talented multisport-ers and young athletes grow old… and return again and again just for the thrill of the race. Age might slow you down, but it doesn’t stop the fun. We’ve even had competitors as young as 10 and 11 enjoying the Peak to Peak with their parents.

It’s a testament to Queenstown that the Torpedo Peak to Peak is as popular as it has ever been. Though the town has seen many changes over the past 25 years, our addiction to adventure, sport and this striking landscape clearly hasn’t changed, we’ve just learned to share it with more people. There’s still a few entries left for the 25th Peak to Peak Multisport Race. Perpetuating Stereotypes

I am a gay man. I have a shaved head, I wear blue jeans and flannel, I swear and drink beer. When I sneeze - snot comes out, not glitter. My dollars sure as hell aren’t pink, but hard earned like everybody else in this town. I work in the male dominated transport industry, I have never been subjected to anything worse than light hearted banter, which if I weren’t included in on account of being gay, I’d feel left out of the camaraderie my other colleagues share. Where does this idea come from that gay men float around in pink tutus and only cross the street at rainbow coloured crossings? Where did Karen Boult get the idea that Queenstown is anything but gay friendly is beyond me. I’ve never felt there is a business that I can’t visit on account of my sexuality. In fact if she goes ahead with this idea of hers to have insecure business owners pay an arbitrary registration fee to hang

an authorised Karen approved rainbow over the door of their shop, I will more likely pass it by than visit it, as all this does is reinforce archaic stereotypes of gay men and is a blatant money grabbing scheme. Queenstown is and always has been accepting of all people. Quit putting the idea in people’s heads that gay men and women are in any way different or hold different values to everybody else. By putting rainbows everywhere and referring to the pink dollar, just reminds us gay people that certain folk are still uncomfortable with us and think of us as not quite the same as them. A tolerant society wouldn’t need to differentiate between gay and non gay friendly businesses with pretty pictures over the entrance. Anti-Rainbow spokesman.

Response from Martin King, Director of Winter Pride It is always good to hear that someone feels safe and included as an LGBTTI+ person in our community. That feels like the way that things should be. Unfortunately yours is not the common experience, and not because people are being deliberately malicious. Over half of LGBT+ people are not comfortable to be open about their status at work and around a 1/3 actually go back in the closet at work, and so having Winter Pride in Queenstown is important and The Pride Pledge is a way businesses can show they are supportive, safe and inclusive businesses for their LGBT+ staff and customers. Queenstown is a wonderful community of people who endeavour to be inclusive, and that is a strength for events like Winter Pride and the Pride Pledge initiative and why it has been so successful.

As a community we can be very proud and privileged to have Karen Boult, our Mayoress, stand alongside us and say that she wants our town to be more inclusive and safer for everyone, where people can be visible with glitter and in jeans, with long hair or shaved heads. Mayoress, Karen Boult, added: “Our district is a welcoming, vibrant community that celebrates diversity, and we’re lucky to have the opportunity to acknowledge that through Winter Pride and the Pride Pledge. Homer Simpson The littering I have noticed at previous crate days was mainly due to the lack of bins, which were overflowing with rubbish not long after the event started. Local companies were offering skips, etc to accomodate this, but no extra bins were provided on the day. The Council should be putting their effort into better waste management and enforcing strict littering fines/signage etc, rather then punishing all of the responsible drinkers who enjoy this yearly event.

Over reaction, easy fix Banning alcohol in public places is going to be inevitable and the sooner the better in my view. The consumption of alcohol is a public health issue that costs the country millions. Taking the same path that we have with cigarette smoking is already on the authorities radar and its only a matter of time. Bring it on!!
