Growing up in Gibbston taught me one thing, Central Otago is by far the most beautiful place in the world. I’m bias I know. But I’m sure you will be too. Our home is pretty spectacular. We need to make a real effort to protect her. Looking after our community, our wildlife, and our environment is a priority, especially now that we are in the throes of a smelly nationwide waste crisis. In the 2018 Colmar Brunton ‘Better Futures’ report, ‘a build-up of plastic in the environment’ came in at number five of New Zealanders’ top ten concerns. Yes, we care. So, now we need to act. Consider this, the largest plastic bottle producer creates 168 billion bottles per year, using less than 7% recycled material. We’re creating and living in a world of diabolical excess when instead we should be looking to reuse, recycle, and reduce the amount of waste. Here in our small island country we can see the evidence of such plastic pollution. Tonnes and tonnes of waste accumulates daily with nowhere to go. We need to make a collective difference. How on earth do we do that then when the Resin Identification Code on plastics is only voluntary, when the ‘recycling triangle’ only reflects that somewhere in the world there are facilities to recycle that material - not necessarily here in New Zealand, and when some councils recycle materials that others can’t? It’s confusing and overly difficult to do the right thing. As we can no longer send our waste overseas, this year became an opportunity for New Zealand to do better. The pledge to use more sustainable plastics by 2025 is fantastic, however, that’s still seven years away! I think we all ought to be able to make a difference tomorrow. Reducing waste is key. We all agree that we want that. So, let’s improve the system.

I’ve recently petitioned Government asking that they introduce a new, simple, and compulsory labelling system on all our food and drink products in New Zealand indicating the recyclability of packaging. My idea is pretty simple. I propose all food and drink packaging be labelled: Two Green Thumbs Up (packaging 100% recyclable in NZ and made from 100% recycled material), One Horizontal Yellow Thumb (100% recyclable in NZ, but not made from recycled material), Two Red Thumbs Down (not recyclable in NZ.) It seems many feel a bit helpless about the current waste crisis and wish they could do more to positively contribute. I hope to empower the consumer by allowing them to quickly make better choices for our beautiful country. For my idea to come into place, we will need our councils nationwide to agree on national waste standard. Crazily, we don’t already have one. Thousands have already signed the petition. I am urging other locals to sign and share the petition if they think it’s a good idea. The more signatures, the more seriously the concept will be considered. We all saw the action of this brave lady, collecting on her own over 10,000 cigarette butts at the lake front, in just a month. The Council’s answer? “It’s difficult because we live in a free world and smoking is legal” Let’s be serious for a second... Camping is legal, but we can’t do it anywhere. When we had health and safety issues in Lake Hayes, there wasn’t much of a debate to quickly close down the free camping grounds. Cigarette butts are damaging Lake Wakatipu too! And what about the drinking ban? As far as I’m aware, selling and drinking alcohol is also legal in this country, but it doesn’t stop the government from shutting down bottle shops for a few days a year or having a drinking ban here in Queenstown over the Christmas period, Crate Day and more to come. And we can’t drink at night either.
Should I remind Mr Mayor that ski resorts around us are smoking free too and that you can’t just smoke in a restaurant, a plane or wherever you want. So what about a compromise? Restricted areas, like at the airport? People can still smoke but only in a 10m radius around the bin collection point around the lake front and Botanic Gardens. They would have easy access to an ashtray and we already have a littering fee, just in case we need it. The country has the objective to be a 100% smoking free by 2025, so when do we start taking action?

Job Searching Etiquette What is Queenstown coming too? Where is the etiquette with getting a job these days? I have been amazed at the amount of resumes I have been receiving in from the apparent “newbie locals” in town. Do me a favor, before you come and hand in your resume into a professional business could you make sure that: •
You don’t stink of alcohol and maybe took the effort to shower before coming in.

Maybe look the part - wearing joggers with holes in them and slippers is really not on anyone’s fashion radar.
•
Actually have a resume with you. What is the point applying if you are not prepared/ready?
•
Act like you would REALLY like this job and not that you are doing me a favor.
•
Have a good attitude - don’t act like Queenstown owes you and you are just obliged to this job role.
•
Don’t come in as a pack and all go for the same job or have your mate hanging off the side of you and that includes couples too - get a grip and leave them at peace. I assure you they aren’t going anyway and its just awkward for everyone!

If asked if you have experience in the job role you are applying for don’t say that its all the same thing and so are customers.

Put some effort into your resume.

With a new director came a host of changes, this is always scary. Overall I think the new director has built a great platform for re-invigorating festival but there’s a long way to go. Really liked the new stage area. There were a few things that I was completely unclear about and a week out from festival I still thought it was 2 weeks away and most locals that I spoke to had no idea what was happening or when so the marketing was poor. Also, I was completely unaware of the liquor ban that was on. The move to Cardrona is wrong. It doesn’t matter how you package it up Cardrona is not in Queenstown and it’s the Queenstown Winter Festival. If I had gone to the ball and not been told that I would be 4wding the mountains above queenstown, in the dark, in a bus I would’ve killed the idiot that thought that was a good idea. Overall conclusion... they’ve taken money out of infrastructure and marketing to put on better events which is great. If anyone turns up.

NZ Mountain Film Festival. Come to Central Otago in 2018 for NZ’s very own Mountain Film Festival. The 16th NZ Mountain Film and Book Festival presents a wide range of films, guest speakers, workshops and presentations from inspirational adventurers from within NZ and around the world. Their films and books tell stories of adventure sports, foreign cultures, remote travel and environmental issues. The NZ Mountain Film & Book Festival is on in Wanaka June 29 to July 4, Cromwell July 4 and Queenstown July 5 to 7.
