It’s no secret that Queenstown is going through some growing pains. From infrastructure issues to the housing shortage, it sometimes feels like Queenstown’s problems are bigger than any individual can manage alone. Often, we look to council and central government to “fix it” – that’s why we pay rates and taxes, after all. I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s sat in traffic or read about the region’s lack of recycling facilities and said, “when are they going to fix this?!” But not all issues can be, or need to be, fixed or managed by government and the council. As a nation that prides itself on ingenuity, it’s important we celebrate the people who have the get-up-and-go to tackle the region’s issues and provide solutions themselves. It’s something we should be appreciative of every day, but this week is a special opportunity to celebrate these individuals. 17th – 23rd June is National Volunteer Week and this year’s theme is ‘The Heart of the Community’. It’s an appropriate theme for Queenstown, fighting back against the false perception that this region is full of tourists and millionaires who couldn’t care less about our community. There’s a huge range of volunteers who contribute to Queenstown and we often don’t appreciate how hard volunteers have worked to produce the results we see. All of Queenstown’s firefighters are volunteers who regularly run out of their day jobs – or beds – to attend to emergencies and save lives. Then there’s Happiness House, an organisation created by local woman Pat Bird to offer a support network for families in the region. She recognised back in 1991 that in a rapidly growing community, some families were being left behind. LUMA is another great example, months of planning goes towards creating an event that’s free, family-friendly and now a key event in the region’s calendar in what would otherwise be a quiet time of year. At this year’s festival Dishrupt was launched, an initiative by volunteer organisation Sustainable Queenstown which is working to reduce the amount of single-use plastics and other waste heading to landfill. The idea of using stainless steel plates instead of single-use plastic ones is simple, but it must have taken many volunteer hours to organise, collect the plates and wash them ready for re-use. Then there’s organisations like the Wakatipu Wildlife Trust and the Kiwi Birdlife Park, working hard to protect endemic species so that New Zealand’s unique birds, bugs and lizards don’t become the stuff of history books. All of this makes Queenstown that little bit better to live in. From the Queenstown Trail Trusts volunteer-built mountain biking trails to St John assistants at events – it makes our community safer, better and more enjoyable. So this week, let’s take a moment to celebrate the people who don’t wait for someone else to “fix it”.

I know I’m whinging about a whinging here... but everyone online is so grumpy! Why? We’ve got lots of useful trading pages and facebook or other online groups in the region which are a great way to recycle, get a bargain and find out community news. Unfortunately, this is often spoiled by grumpy idiots who reply to posts with useless comments like “go to a shop” or “Google it”.

Justice For All I’d like to address some of the flack vegetarians and vegans especially get. Firstly I’d like to assist ‘Food For Thought’ who last week said the pro-veggie/vegan stickers were damaging the environment. As you are quite rightly concerned about the environment, I’d like to point out that the production of animal products, whether factory, farmed or backyard, is the leading cause of climate change/global warming, deforestation, fishless and oceans and species extinction in the World. This has been further backed up very recently with the most comprehensive study done to date on the impact animal agriculture has on the environment and scientists have said a vegan diet is the single biggest way we can make a difference (published in the Journal Science - google it).

Martin Luther King’s civil rights movement? Because all of them movements began with a small group of people who fought for social justice because the majority of society deemed the exploitation, abuse or murder of innocent lives completely just. Would you have stood with the majority on the side of the oppressor or fought alongside the minority for the oppressed? Maybe when people can look past their own selfish greed and realise animals aren’t here for us to use, abuse, exploit and consume, learn to respect all life and their preference to live as we do, show more love to the planet and the World we are leaving behind to our children and grandchildren, they will understand why we do what we do. Even if it is just stickers.

I have lived here for over a year now and all the stickers I have seen are still there, therefore not creating any environmental impact or harm to animals whatsoever. I’m a plant based nutritional therapist so if we can encourage people to eat more fruit and veggies the better. Vegans live longer, have less disease and are slimmer than their fellow meateaters. Patron, as with everywhere in Queenstown, “Saigon Kingdom”, “Farelli’s”, “Winnie’s“, “Cafe Society” and “Rehab” have all offered vegan meals in the past however due to the influx of vegans, they now have entire vegan menus available as well. It’s great to see this being discussed in a kind and compassionate manner. Thank you LWB for shedding light to such a growing wellness and social justice movement for our planet.

NEWS FROM....... ON THE ARTS TRAIL IN CROMWELL
Cromwell might be better known for its high-octane motor sport and award-winning wineries, but this charming little town is also home to a burgeoning art scene. "There is a strong, proactive and supportive arts community in Cromwell which ensures the arts across a range of disciplines are well represented in the area,” says Rebekah de Jong, Coordinator of The Central Otago District Arts Trust (CODAT). “Equally, this spectacular part of the world seems to attract creative types and I believe this is one of a number of reasons the art scene is gaining momentum in Cromwell.” The first stop on the Cromwell leg of the Central Otago Arts Trail is Lynne Wilson and Joan Neil’s studio in Molyneux Avenue where you will find beautiful stained glass and ceramic pieces. From there, a short walk to the Cromwell Heritage Precinct will bring you to Objects of Art, Les Riddell’s handmade jewellery shop, as well as OCTA Gallery and Workshop with Gail and Chris de Jong’s world class collection of original works on paper. Also in the Precinct is the artist-run initiative hullabaloo art space. This contemporary art space has a diverse range of sculpture, painting, photography, ceramics, printmaking, and multimedia pieces for sale. Marie Velenski’s wee glass fusing studio is also nestled in one of the historic buildings in the Precinct. In Donegal Street you will find two painters. Paul Samson, a classical oil painter, is located at Hotop House, and Lorraine Higgins’ more abstract work can be seen at her home gallery. Another painter, Rachel Hirabayashi, also uses metal to create sculptures to show the joy of movement. The trail in town ends at the Guise Gallery in Sunhaven Cove where Annie and John Guise showcase their beautiful oil paintings and impressive wood turning and carving pieces. NEWS FROM.... The Speedway Track for all of Central Otago
It’s no coincidence that although located in Cromwell it is called Central Motor Speedway, because that’s exactly what it is, the speedway track for all of Central Otago. The speedway’s current and longest serving president, Andy Erskine, is far from alone suggesting that the future of this valuable regional asset is much bigger than just a Cromwell community issue. “Should ever Central Motor Speedway be forced out of Sandflat Road it would be an enormous loss for the whole region and beyond. “The main reason Ron Spriggs, who in 1980 all but single-handedly built the speedway, chose Cromwell was for its ‘hub’ location and reliable weather. It’s rare for a meeting at Central Motor Speedway to be rained out which has definitely contributed to us hosting so many national championships. Next year on February 1 and 2, the 2019 New Zealand Sprintcar Title will be decided on Central Motor Speedway clay. This will be the third time this high profile title has been fought for in Central Otago. “There was a time when speedway could be perceived as a bit rough around the edges, but these days it’s all about family entertainment and participation. Speedway brings huge numbers of families’ trackside, behind the scenes many families work as volunteers while in the pits most crews include close and other family members. I went from helping my dad Russell who at 68 still races, to getting behind the wheel of a saloon and then a sprintcar with wife Mandy and children Lucas and Keely supporting in all sorts of ways. Now 15 and 13, Lucas and Keely race youth ministocks. My vision for Central Motor Speedway is to see the day when like my mum and dad, we can watch our grandchildren race on Cromwell clay in Sandflat Road.” Becoming Central Motor Speedway president for a tenth time was not in Andy’s foreseeable plans but the sudden passing of president Daryl Ainsley early in May in a non-racing motor accident saw Andy agree at the recent Central Motor Speedway AGM to step up to the plate as president. “With Daryl’s passing I lost a close friend and Central Motor Speedway lost a well-respected driver and a man who true to his reputation as ‘Mr 110 percent’ gave the club far more than its fair share of his hands-on and administrative time and energy,” says Andy who has Andy Reedy as vice-president and Jason Scott as promoter. At the after-AGM prizegiving, Andy and Mandy Erskine along with Jason Scott were made life members. Selected by Daryl before his passing, Jeannine Cunningham received the President’s Choice Trophy for her contribution to the Central Motor Speedway committee. Ross Lindsay
