Free community art and light festival in Queenstown, Lighting up Queenstown. This coming long weekend, June 1 – 4, Queenstown will be illuminated with art and sculpture for the third annual LUMA Southern Light Project. Over 35,000 locals and visitors from all over the world attended LUMA last year, which transformed Queenstown’s famous gardens and lakefront into a dazzling display of glowing art. LUMA is a family friendly event, showcasing a curated collection of stunning light sculptures and installations from local, national and international artists, all designed to take people on a magical journey whilst stimulating their creative senses. LUMA has been created specifically for our community and it is unique to our town. People from all over Queenstown get involved, from artists, businesses, Council to our local schools. The LUMA family boasts a large network of over 100 volunteers and helpers who help bring this event to life. In 2018 sustainability features amongst its themes with local schools producing two exhibits highlighting environmental impact. Additionally, this year we are teaming up with Dishrupt & Sustainable Queenstown, minimising waste, composting and trialling re-usable plates, all with a 2020 zero waste goal in mind. We encourage everyone to use their feet, take the bus or at the very least please ride share. There will be a dedicated drop off zone at the Park St entrance for those lucky passengers with a driver willing to park and walk.

Pedestrians Walking So I was taught at a very early age that it is courteous and protocol to always walk in the same side as traffic. In New Zealand and Australia, we drive on the left side, therefore it is expected we walk on the left side. However, I’m very confused as to why Queenstown doesn’t follow this universal rule? I maintain the left side while walking on the sidewalk, hiking, running, etc yet I’m always dodging a stubborn walker who is walking on the right side! It’s annoying, and it causes major crowdedness on the streets.
Is Luma the Queenstown’s best artistic event of the year?
I’ve asked all my fellow Aussie and Kiwis about this and they all agree. When I visited the US and Canada, we walked on the right side, it was the assumed position.

It’s simply preposterous to suggest that a hulk of a building housing 400 odd people with the CBD will somehow enhance the fabric of the local community, whose it heart is supposedly in central Queenstown?
There are plenty of other suitable locations, including the Lakeview site, which is close enough to the CBD so that council staff can take a healthy walk to the CBD if they so desire. it offers the added advantage of plenty of room for expansion and community services including Libary, Arts centre, Toy library, medical centre and perhaps even a coffee shop or two plus adjacent Visitor parking.
That might have been true 30 years ago, when you did your shopping and obtained services in the CDB, but thanks mainly to excessive councils at the behest of the big end of town, locals were redirected to Remarkable Park and elsewhere. It really shows what a pack of dumb wits we have at the helm they now expect us to now flock back into the CDB to justify their crazy decision of placing a building smack centre of town that’s going to further exasperate traffic and parking problems. The question arises are the council going to provide Council staff and no doubt councillors. at the ratepayer’s expense 200-300 free car parks council
That the council has not even considered this option and is hell-bent on doing deals to monetize this ratepayer owned asset instead of using it to it best advantage could do with some investigating, now there something to get your teeth into Bethany. Over&Out
