If there’s one thing Queenstown doesn’t need to add to its transportation woes, it’s a taxi war. But it looks like we’re about to have one. Sub-standard customer service and compromised customer safety accusations have started flying between established taxi operators and newcomers joining the ranks since a recent law change made it easier to become a ‘taxi service’. Now, Uber New Zealand have announced it will be expanding its services into Queenstown sometime in May. The San Francisco-based company enables users to hail and pay for rides via a smartphone app. It’s popular for being cheap and convenient and has been hailed as a ‘disruptive innovation’ by some users. Though it is a cleverly designed app, Uber’s business model and perceived lack of regard for local laws has seen it banned in cities around the world. Like all cheap products, there’s a catch – and it comes first at the expense of the local workforce and traditional Queenstown taxi companies who will soon have to compete with those willing to work longer, for less money. Uber charges drivers around 20% – 30% of each fare paid and drivers are classed as contractors, so have no employment rights or benefits. In New Zealand, some Uber drivers report earning as little as NZ$10 - $12 per hour (the minimum wage is $15.75). Many are lured by the idea of becoming their own boss and earning extra cash but soon find they must work longer hours to make money – something which has raised safety concerns in other countries. It’s an okay model for casual workers and students looking for a bit of extra income, or those willing to risk public safety by taking on a driving shift after a full day’s traditional employment. But is it a viable full-time, permanent role? Or is Queenstown about to welcome yet more short-term, poorly qualified and inexperienced drivers prepared to work for below minimum wage?

However, we do need to recognise that the world is changing. As technology takes over more aspects of our lives, many speculate that it’s only a matter of time until all vehicles are autonomous. Until then, consumers are simply looking for the cheapest and easiest way to get around. That’s fair enough considering the high cost of traditional taxi fares in Queenstown.

So, is there a middle ground? The tech-savvy city of Austin, Texas may have found it. The city temporarily ousted Uber during a legislation dispute and in its absence, a range of Uber-like apps popped up. These apps are locally owned and charge drivers a ﬂat fee of just 99 cents per fare, providing both drivers and consumers a fairer choice. Some local taxi companies already have great apps and at least one Uber-style business model is well established in Queenstown. Perhaps they could up their tech game to beat the American giant at its own game – without undermining local drivers. There’s a burgeoning technology industry here in Queenstown and it may well have the answer to the Queenstown vs San Francisco taxi wars. Whatever happens next, Queenstown is in for an interesting ride and in the end, it’ll all come down to savvy consumer choices.

The Crescent of Barking Dogs

It’s two o’clock in the morning, you are in a much-needed state of deep, nourishing sleep, when out of the blue some unsupervised mangy mutt pacing up and down in somebody’s garden lets out a series of shrieking barks that sets off every nervous canine in the place – an ear-piercing assault of barking, at every pitch and level from all directions, like an orchestral nightmare where no one is following the same piece of music. Forget the Partyland reputation, forget the drunks and the ignorant louts urinating on the streets as they proudly carry their boxes of booze on their shoulders, forget the neighbours unsupervised children screaming around and chucking rocks on the pathway to amuse themselves, forget the exhaust-spewing cars revving up night and day outside your house, forget the bangers and motorbikes roaring outside your window at break-neck speed like something out of an Isle of Man competition when it comes to noise – and I mean real, soul-destroying, sleep-depriving, gutwrenching noise – nothing takes that trophy like the dogs on this street. All it takes is for a moth to fly past, a flea to jump in the wrong direction, a branch to crack or heave, and all hell breaks loose canine-wise up here on Wynyard Crescent, the street where anything goes and where complaining to the Council is, frankly, an exercise in monumental futility, despite their best intentions.

Gone are the days when basic courtesy and thoughtfulness towards one’s neighbour were standard currency, where to own a constantly barking mutt was an embarrassment. Up here on Wynyard Crescent, it’s a free-for-all. The noise here is acute. Even with every window in your house closed, the noise pollution penetrates every level of your being. As I write these words, some kind of vehicle is approaching, and its stereo is, naturally, rammed up at maximum, to the point where I am surprised that the vibrations don’t loosen the bolts of the car. Whoom! Whoom! Whoom! The same old boom-boom, meaningless crap, the same head-splitting noise. In all my time in this house, I have never heard someone actually play a song, at any level, in their vehicle – certainly never any classical music, even if pumped up to the maximum. Just the moronic, zombielike boom! Boom! Frankly, I can’t stand the way society is going. If I won Lotto I would leave this place before the ink dried on the cheque. And unlike Lot’s wife, I would not look back.

Bus Hogging Dodging cars is fun – when you play computer games. Driving along Hallenstein Street? Not so much. The road is bad enough without big coaches (and campervans). Why do they have to drive this way is a mystery to me. You wouldn’t believe how many you see every day (I live on that street) and the best thing is that they are empty. They are certainly not picking anyone or dropping anyone off. Gorge Road is probably not exciting enough for them? People living on this street (and people who work in town not willing to pay for parking) park here. Damage to mirrors and cars is a daily occurrence. Can this type of vehicles be banned from driving through Hallenstein Street? Speaking of dodging – have you ever walked past Nomads on Church Street around 8:30 in the morning? If you manage to get through the crowd of people boarding the coach and not trip over their bags, well done! Until the next day, when it happens all over again. If you are lucky, the coach parks across the road using a number of parking spaces, as the delivery vehicles had beaten “the big green coach” (I don’t want to name any names) to it and are parked in the loading bay. You are then free to use

the pavement. Only because the backpackers are now standing in the middle of the road, waiting to board the bus. In winter, you find yourself tripping over their skis and snowboards. You are totally invisible to them. They stand there and they simply won’t budge. Hmmm, reminds me of another area in town which is best to avoid. You might point out that I could walk another way, but my question is: why can’t this company pick up the backpackers from the perfectly fine bus stop next to Alpine Supermarket? Wasn’t that done for that purpose? There is lots of room for the coach and the passengers waiting to board without hogging the pavement or the loading zone (so the delivery trucks have somewhere to park). Oh, and you won’t have to trip over luggage, skis or the backpackers themselves.

The Queenstown Chinge I came from the Gold Coast to escape rampant overdevelopment, Council incompetency and corruption and escape the cringe factor of telling people where I lived.

Once Queenstown is wrecked and unfortunately I think the damage has already been done, the tourists will stop coming and businesses will close.

I find Queenstown has become just as bad. Maybe it’s us finding beautiful places only to have them exploited by big business and useless politicians.

FACEBOOK/WEBSITE COMMENTS Editorial - 642 I was surprised to see such a one-sided editorial on the chlorination of water debate. Residents of both Glenorchy and Arthurs Point have very strongly united in opposing this move and asking for the council not to rush into this so quickly without even waiting to see what the new Government regulations are. These are not yet released, yet the council is due to make a major decision on the long term future of our water on Friday. In Glenorchy, with only about 200 households permanently occupied, 150 people signed a petition last year opposing chlorination. In the last week, Arthurs Point have collected 350 + signatures from around 350 households, asking the council to postpone this decision. These are not just a minority ‘tin hat brigade’ this is a HUGE majority of residents in those areas asking the council to slow down and consider other options before taking such a drastic step. Temporary chlorination is already in place so whats the hurry? In the Arthurs Point case, our current system is actually really good, most of the network is relatively new, we have an incredibly pristine alpine mineral source, good bore depth.... We wish to work collaboratively with the council to find other alternatives. We have engineers, surveyors, water specialists in our area and want to help do the leg work and research different options.

I go to the events centre gym and not only it’s so packed that you can’t do anything right away but most buddies would stay in your way and/or sitting in the machines hogging the equipment. Worse still, there’s no towel requirements so they would leave everything soaking in sweat and none of the instructors would say anything about it. I don’t like those grunts either nor those people dropping their weights just to hear the loud bang of it hitting the floor, but just get yourself a headphone and it’s sorted. The lack of hygiene and common sense using the equipments though, that makes me really angry on a place I go to relax and unwind. PS: I’m pretty sure freedom campers use the facilities every now and then, I’ve seen loads of them in the parking lot and in the dressing rooms. Guess what the staff does to regulate that: nothing!

It has become a highlight in our calendar and there is always a sense of excitement as people flick through the brochure and read about all the films on offer. There is such a variety to enjoy and I am so pleased that we are able bring these to Arrowtown. What will Dorothy Brown’s be doing with the cinema during the festival? We hope to capture a little essence of France by theming the cinema with decorations and playing some French music to add to the ambience!
