There’s a lot about Queenstown that’s immediately obvious as exceptional: Our extraordinary landscapes, our festive atmosphere, and the various entertainments of our visitor economy. Less obvious, but no less exceptional, is what we have because of them. We’re blessed with the most fantastic collection of people, almost all of whom started out somewhere else, but who fell in love with Queenstown and are now here contributing to a cosmopolitan, energetic, and enthusiastic culture second to none. When our community is planning for its future, we have access to advice from world leading experts from the highest levels of academia, business, government, and non-profit sectors - and access to the energy and imagination of incredibly enthusiastic and dedicated people. Not because we spend thousands flying them in from all corners of the world, but because they’re here already, visiting, living, or part time resident. Because this exceptional place attracts equally exceptional people. So, we need to be cautious when considering mechanisms that would block this, blunt tools that might - for instance - block home ownership to new arrivals without recognising the contribution such arrivals make. We need to make sure we strenuously reject any notion that our visitors exist only as a ‘cash cow’ upon whom we can base our economy, but otherwise show little respect for. Good enough to pay your rent, but not good enough to be welcomed in friendship. And we need to stop thinking of our visitor economy as the end of the story, when instead it’s just the beginning. This town has done pretty well selling burgers and hotel rooms to visitors but imagine how much better it can do by fully engaging our visitors, both short and long term, in our community, our entire culture, our whole economy. Many arrivals have exceptionally high levels of skill and expertise across a range of fields, and it’s a crying shame that year after year we deny them and us the benefits of those skills: Day labouring, cleaning, and hospitality positions are plentiful, but opportunities in the sciences, in technology, in creativity and innovation - these are all far rarer than they should be.

We all know this, it’s nothing that hasn’t been said before. But we’re now doing something about it. Startup Queenstown Lakes is a new, entrepreneur led group that’s forming right now. We’re out to build a prosperous, resilient, and diversified local economy, and to expand our ability to attract and retain the world’s most exceptional people. Over the coming weeks we will be initiating a range of actions, many of which we’ll need your help and support for. As a first step we’re running a startup census, turning “what we all know” into hard data that we can use to inform our community, its decision making, and those in Wellington and elsewhere whose support we need. If you’re interested in innovation, already on the startup pathway, or feel you might be able to help those who are, we’d love to hear from you at www. entrepreneurship.co.nz. Nutty Chaos

I think it’s high time we took a look at how ridiculous it is that we cannot put any nut products in our children’s lunchboxes at primary school. The logic is ridiculous. Some over protective mother who is probably high up in the PTA, who’s child has a nut allergy has made it not possible for hundreds of students not to have a bag of cashews? How about teaching your kid to be conscious of what they eat? Why should hundreds of parents not be able to supply nuts to their children?

Have we forgotten how good nuts are for the human body, the healthy fats and slow release energy? So I have to give my child rubbish just to accommodate one child? With this logic, the child in question would not be able to walk down the aisles in the supermarket in the fear they might go into shock. Any parents that stand with me on this issue should band together. Let’s not be shy, we can’t have this...

CBD Turning To Sh*t Okay Council, I’ve been pretty patient up until now, like most of us have. But seriously, what are you doing to this town? You can’t be that ignorant to see what a mess this place has become. There is absolutely nowhere to park! Everybody I talk to these days are talking about how you are killing the city centre which I honesty hope isn’t your plan. I watch the tourists in their rental cars circling round and around and then drive out of town. No wonder all the fantastic retail shops in the CDB are choosing to shut down (I’d love to see your stats from the last 5 years of long term locals that have shut their businesses.) But that’s okay, we obviously need more booking agents and souvenir shops Hey, I think the bus is a fantastic and great initiative for many people and I truly hope it gains momentum. But the truth is, is that it’s just not viable for everyone. I live out of town as I can’t afford to live in QT which I’m more than okay with. People say why don’t you park in Frankton and get the bus

in, but there’s nowhere to park the car there either. More to the point is that my job requires me to make calls on our clients daily. The last month, it has been really stressful as my manager keeps asking me what is taking me so long. I’m making a 15min call but then it takes me over 30mins of driving around trying to find somewhere to park. Pay for parking you say? Believe me I’ve tried, every single carpark is full. Man St carpark lets you in and after you circle the first three floors and see they are chocca, you get to the bottom floor which is half empty. But, oh no you can’t park there, they are reserved for the QLDC Now I hear that your about to cut a heap more parks at the end of this month, are you serious? How about you give up some of your free car parking spots and see how the rest of us have to cope.

Really Pissed Off, Long Term Local

Response from QLDC There’s no getting past the fact that parking is in short supply in Queenstown. Year on year of sustained population growth simply means there aren’t enough parks for all users during the day. We’re working on a number of solutions, from the introduction of the $2 bus late last year, to changing parking time limits and pricing. We’re also consulting on the Ten Year Plan at present, which includes provisions for two new parking building to be built – one at Gorge Road and another at Ballarat Street. We’re keen to hear everyone’s thoughts and suggestions on parking across the district so please take the time to read the Ten Year Plan and leave a submission online - www.qldc.govt.nz.

The parking spots you mention in Man Street are indeed reserved for QLDC vehicles and are paid for at market rate. These are for QLDC fleet vehicles which are used by staff to travel around the District on council business. They aren’t free personal parks for QLDC staff, who all have to pay for parks along with everyone else in Queenstown (we’re all locals too). Council staff are using public transport for site visits where possible, and staff are encouraged to catch the bus, ride share, walk, run or cycle where practical for their daily commute. I try to use re-usable bags, but why do plastic bags get so much grief when one 1.5 litre soft drink bottle has as much plastic as 50 bags. Thick plastic such as bottles take way longer to decompose than thin plastic bags but people seem to ignore most things other than bags. Not saying bags are good but why don’t people focus on all plastic, not just one type because you’ve seen a picture on Facebook of a turtle stuck in a bag off the coast of Namibia.

A big parking building with reasonable rates. And I have lost count of the number of abs dined or for sale vehicles which are taking up space in town. I tell QLDC and they say ‘can you give us the make, model and rego please?’ Why? I give you the location, surely the Wardens can work out which car out of about 5 is the abandoned one!
