Will Special Housing Areas work in the long term? Last week, the Queenstown Lakes District Council announced that it had received an expression of interest from ‘Bright Sky’ to create a Special Housing Area (SHA) in Wanaka. SHAs were first introduced in 2013 to “facilitate an increase in land and housing supply, and improve housing affordability and suitability in the Queenstown Lakes District.” But are they serving their purpose? Since 2013, Queenstown property and rental prices have skyrocketed and housing affordability has not improved. Queenstown is the perfect hot mess of above-average rental and property prices and below-average wages. So far, seven SHAs have been approved, which should provide 1030 residential sections or units. However, only 10% need to be classified as ‘affordable’ to meet regulations and growth predictions estimate the region will need 9158 dwellings to meet demand. The Queenstown Lakes Community Housing Trust works hard to leverage this and assist Queenstown families, but there’s only so far this will stretch. Everyone else must sit back and hope that more houses will equate to cheaper houses… which seems like bright sky thinking to me. Queenstown has been an in-demand area to live in for decades and will surely continue to be in-demand for many more years to come. Indeed, an article in British newspaper The Guardian noted that up until recently, Queenstown and Wanaka was a hotspot for US billionaires looking to dodge a hypothetical ‘apocalypse’ (Why Silicon Valley billionaires are prepping for the apocalypse in New Zealand, 15/02/18). It seems a shame that US billionaires, some of whom have barely set foot in the country, have secured housing in central Queenstown, while those born and bred here and those who have lived, worked and contributed to the community for many years, are forced to move out. It’s a sign of global inequality, but it’s also a sign that the previous government bent over backwards to accommodate ‘special individuals’. So why can’t long-term-resident families and professionals be the new ‘special individuals’?

Though (obviously) it’s not Silicon Valley billionaires buying up SHA housing stock, more can be done to ensure affordable housing is available for people who will live in them – not flip them for profit a few short years later, or rent them at $400 per room to seasonal workers. Qualifying developments within SHA are required to take a “proactive approach” to housing affordability. Wanaka’s SHA developer promises small houses with solar panels to “reduce heating costs” – but is this enough to make them affordable in real terms?

Lazy Outrage
I’m not perfect. I’m the guy on the construction site, the chick at the checkout, the teacher two classrooms along from you. I’m your neighbour. I’m you. And just like you, I’m living in Queenstown in a state of constant tension, wondering if I can pay the bills this month, if I will make it through the traffic to get my kids to school, or my arthritis blood test, or the supermarket.
The toxic outrage that is gumming up community Facebook pages around here is lazy and mean spirited. If something is winding you up, please be constructive and call the company or the govt authority managing it, and talk to them. Call Citizens Advice. Listen to what they have to say and for chrissake be open to the possibility that it might end up being OK.
I live with you in this place that is growing, and transforming, and straining everyone’s nerves. So let’s not start tearing each other to pieces. I’m very confident that the house I live in was a construction zone once, that the place where I work was a paddocks with trees and dust and puddles. He gave my friend the worst image possible of QT, Kiwis, and the tourism business. It broke my heart, as this is the opposite of the city that I’ve known for almost 2 years now.
A friend of mine, working in Alexandra, came over, just to spend Monday here - second time for him in Queenstown. He arrived at 9pm on Sunday, to get his key at the backpackers that he booked for the night. He parks outside for 15min, goes to the reception, and when he’ s back, the front wheel is clamped.
Not sure that my friend will drive again to the city and if he does, he might try to park illegally somewhere around town, as getting your key at the reception can cost you a room + a clamp and some comments about your mom’s sexual habits. Better to only pay $200 for illegal camping without the room and insults. It only takes one grumpy old racist man to ruin a lovely weekend.
It looks like he parked on the neighbours Motel carpark. While tried to understand what happened, we start being shouted at, with all the different variations of the F word: Go F yourself, F off, F you. Plus some nice comments about the fact if my friend isn’t perfectly fluent in English, so he shouldn’ t stay in NZ, he should go back to the Sh*th*le country that he comes from. He was going to teach us a lesson, all of us being, stupid, morons.

All of this does make one wonder how committed Ritchies are with their “hodgepodge” of dilapidated busses that they have assembled for Queenstown and if they are truly safe and roadworthy… I wonder!

The fund’s that were raised were used towards a new terminal and infrastructure around the airport. It was just one of those things that we knew we had to pay at the Airport bookstore to get a sicker on your boarding pass. Did it mean you didn’t fly out of Palmy, no. So I ask why can we not do something similar at Queenstown. Airport?
Michelle Reading the report from Queenstown Airport on their future plans, they say 7.2 million visitors through the Airport per year in the next 15 years. There’s only 2 mill now. So these weeks like Chinese New Year will be the norm every week of the year coming up. So saturation point is far off in the distance. We need to start charging a visitor tax. I’ve spent 6 months travelling the USA in the last 3 years and everywhere you go there is a visitor tax/levy added to your hotel bill. Anything from $3 to $35 per night in the resorts. Wake up Queenstown I remember talking about this in the 80’s and the QLDC ignored it then. Don’t stuff this up. Get off your backsides and make it happen.

Drug Testing Technician - Queenstown/Central Otago The Drug Detection Agency (TDDA) is the largest provider of workplace drug testing services in New Zealand, performing health and safety focused collection and screening of urine, oral fluid and hair samples from workforce personnel. No formal qualifications are required from applicants as full training and assessment in required NZ standards will be completed before the commencement of work. The required qualification is completed in a three day course run by TDDA. The main requirement of this position is the collection of samples to detect the presence of illicit and prescription drugs. The applicant must be honest, reliable and not afraid of hard work and sometimes long hours. The hours change on a daily basis due to testing requirements so we cannot provide a set start or finish time each day - daily hours vary between 6-12 hours. The position is full time with the requirement to be on call every second week. All work is carried out either in our Queenstown office or on site in our fully equipped mobile van. A full Driver Licence is essential as the applicant will be required to drive a van.
