In the midst of a bumper summer, where resources are strained, there’s been more talk of ways to pass the costs of Queenstown’s problems onto tourists. Last week, with Chinese New Year and hordes of summer tourists, Queenstown was brimming with life and bursting at the seams. Weeks like this are typically followed by some locals complaining about the influx of visitors ‘taking over’ the town and putting pressure on our resources and infrastructure. In some ways, the whinging is understandable – around 3.5 million people visited New Zealand last year and many of them visit the ‘jewel in the tourism crown’ that is Queenstown. Though the tourism industry pumps more than $10.1 billion into the national economy (more than any other sector), many still complain that this isn’t enough. Conversation turns to how we can reject tourists of lower value and charge visitors more though tourism and bed taxes. Tourists aren’t stupid and the internet talks loudly – if the cost of visiting Queenstown outstrips the perceived value, people will stop coming. In Southern France, an introduction of further tourist taxes on hikers in the Pyrenees has been met with a backlash after locals and holiday makers alike have said it’s turning local councils into companies, rather than an organisation which serves its community. We’re focussing too much on increasing revenue and getting someone else to pay to fix our problems. Leaky houses, poor infrastructure and bad environmental decisions were all made before the tourism boom happened. The influx of visitors has simply highlighted the problems of decades past. Instead, the influx should be seen as an opportunity; regions like Queenstown are making more money than ever before. Though government laps up some of this money, there’s plenty still in the region – you only need to look at regions like Northland to discover why the nation thinks Queenstown-ers are loaded with cash. Comparatively, we are. Queenstown is not poor. The key to future success isn’t demanding more and more dosh from visitors, it’s organising community and managing our environment better. Thankfully, Queenstown has a great community spirit and there are many examples of locals getting together to make a positive difference. From beach-clean ups organised by Sea Shepherd to loud and proud community dialogue over the management of Freedom Camping, it’s down to locals to really get sh*t done. QLDC, Does Our Poo Not Stink?

In simultaneous headlines today our mayor has commented on two cases of environmental pollution. The first case was a prosecution by the ORC when the QLDC discharged 43,000 litres of raw sewerage into the Shotover river. The mayor expressed his disappointment at the ORC for pursuing a prosecution against the QLDC in the Environment Court. The court found the QLDC guilty as charged and levied a $37,500 fine for ratepayers to pay. The most disturbing aspect of the Judges summary was that the QLDC let sewerage, toilet paper and other associated products remain on the banks of the Shotover river from the 20th of February until some time in May when it was finally removed. In the other case our mayor announced plans to initiate a process aimed at banning camping at Lake Hayes and at the Shotover delta. The justifications for the ban include campers polluting the environment by discharging rubbish and sewerage into the environment. So in one case we have a proven discharge of 43,000 litres of raw sewerage directly into a pristine waterway and in the other case we have anecdotal reports of freedom campers

toileting in the bushes and washing in the lake. The mayor on one hand is disappointed at the punitive action of the Environment court in prosecuting the QLDC and in the other hand is choosing to use the bluntest of instruments available to completely exclude campers from Lake Hayes and the Shotover Delta. In response to the Environment Courts decision the mayor released a statement saying ‘‘In the spirit of co-operation, working together, we could have improved in this area.” Is it possible that the QLDC could now engage in a collaborative approach and work together with stake holders to come up with solutions to the camping issues. I am sure the majority of ratepayers would be happy to contribute funds towards improved public facilities that enable a continued, sustainable freedom camping option for those who wish to camp at Lake Hayes and the Delta.

Response From Mayor Jim Boult The decision by Council to exclude overnight camping at Lake Hayes and the Shotover Delta has been taken following significant feedback from the district’s residents extremely concerned for the environment, our local reserves and their ability to continue enjoying them. Many of these locals are far from happy to financially subsidise the holidays of those freedom campers who do not choose to treat our district with the respect and care it deserves. There will be future options explored around what facilities are needed and how to fund them as part of our upcoming Camping Strategy. In the meantime, residents overwhelmingly told us action was required to protect these two reserves and we responded. Furthermore we have been gathering feedback via our website on constructive solutions to the issue of irresponsible freedom campers and we’ve received approximately

1,000 suggestions and comments which will help inform our Elected Members and the review of Reserve Management Plans and the Freedom Campaign Control Bylaw due later this year. Other activities will include increasing a programme of education and awareness to inform freedom campers what is expected of them to be responsible in Queenstown Lakes. It was disappointing to see ORC pursue a prosecution for the February 2017 discharge at the Kawarau River. This is because QLDC had acknowledged the issue and been working to improve the wastewater system and investment had already been made in a range of upgrades such as 50km of preventative CCTV in the network, acoustic inspection equipment, and new equipment to reach previously unreachable areas of the network. We did not therefore feel that the prosecution was in the interests of improving service provision for residents.

Disappointed In Humanity To the taxi driver that showed no compassion, you know who you are and if you are wondering I do have your plate number. Firstly I would like to apologise to you for being in the wrong by stopping in the taxi area provided outside the ANZ bank (Thursday last week 8th Feb at about 4pm). As there is no disability parking there I pulled in to let a elderly lady of 91 years old out. You came up behind me while I had literally pulled in, jumped out, ran around my car to get her walking frame out while she got herself out of the car to go and do some banking. You witnessed this and if you are an honest person which I hope you are, you would agree that I was literally not even half a minute, but yet you found it in your heart to honk and honk at me while I was trying to help this dear elderly lady get to her bank. I might add she had been in hospital two days prior, that is not the

point though. The point is you should be ashamed of yourself, where is your compassion. Do you not realise that you will one day be an elderly person yourself and perhaps would need some assistance getting out a car to go into your bank. Maybe as you struggle with your walking frame you will think back to this day and feel some remorse. I am not looking for an apology as I have admitted I was in the wrong but if you are a decent person, I would hope that you would find it in your heart to write a letter of apology to this long term local lady for making her feel like she was in the way. Your actions were incredibly unkind Sir!

Editorial - 637 I bike around town a lot, what really pisses me off is motorists who park on the green cyclist section at intersections. Why do they do it? Perhaps because the council does not get the green sections maintained with regular painting of the section in green, and painting the cycle on the section. Motorists wake up, those green sections are reserved for cyclists. Webb’s Fruit $100 Voucher Winners Shopping at the Webb’s Fruit Gorge Stall at 436 Kawarau Road (Highway 6) on the outskirts of Cromwell certainly proved fruitful for Wakatipu’s Leigh Nauman and Aaron Kidd and also Sarah Robotham from Christchurch. Each received a $100 Webb’s Fruit voucher for simply taking a few moments to enter in a draw to help raise awareness of this second roadside stall for Webb’s Fruit. Webb’s Fruit is best known for their store just out of Cromwell on the road to Wanaka at the orchard that has been in the Webb family since 1914, but when the opportunity came to open a second store in the former Sarita Orchard stall for the 2018 season Simon and Trudi Webb took it. “This is much more to do with the pride we take in the fruit we grow than growing our business,” explains Simon. “A lot of traffic to and from the Wakatipu travels along Highway 6 turning into or from Highway 8B, missing out on stopping at our Orchard Store. Now these travellers and commuters can easily stop at our Gorge Stall.

Cromwell Vineyards and Fruit Stalls After a long hot summer vintners and orchardists are looking forward to the autumn harvest across the expanses of the Cromwell Basin. Cherry season is nearing an end and the grapes are ripening early, after record temperatures through November and December.
