In the first week of March, iconic Queenstown golf courses Millbrook and The Hills play host to the 99th running of the ISPS Handa New Zealand Open. The event has much significance to both Queenstown and the Lakes District as well as New Zealand as a whole. Tourism in general has become such a vital part of our economy, and more specifically, the golf tourism sector itself is at the very high end of that scale. One of many interesting statistics gathered by Tourism New Zealand refers to the fact that 41% of all visitors who come here to play golf have a strong propensity to visit a winery, as against 25% of all “holiday visitors”. Clearly golfers enjoy their wine! Another statistic tells us that the average spend of a golf visitor to New Zealand from the USA equates to $19,000 per person – and remember, that figure is an average spend. So with golf tourism delivering such spectacular economic impact, how does the New Zealand Open assist in this process? Obviously, the broadcast of the event showcases the stunning beauty of the region, as well of course, as showing the spectacular and in many ways unique things that both of these golf courses offer to a potential tourist. From the majestic setting of both venues, to the sculptures at the Hills, to the rustic beauty of the Millhouse at Millbrook, the images screened to the world offer the greatest advertisement that our region can offer. The tournament also features a one-day Pro-Am event at Jack’s Point, ensuring that all three courses are featured in the broadcast. Now we all know that golf tournaments are on TV from all corners of the globe pretty much every week; but few, if any, have the backdrop that Queenstown offers. Indeed, our TV show producer this year (who is based in Singapore and works on tournaments all through Asia and Europe) is as excited about the ’colour stories’ that we produce, as much as the golf itself.

To All Immigrant Workers
I’m curious, how many of your Kiwi co-workers did NOT showed up for work this last rainy Thursday? And from those who did, how many were AT LEAST 15min late? We constantly hear and read about how immigrants are ‘stealing’ Kiwis jobs, how hard it is for Kiwis to find work - that is not minimum wage, of course poor things! And all that crap about immigrants giving a little and taking a lot but when push comes to shove, we know all to well what happens with most Kiwi employees: Lowest concern about their jobs, minimum effort in doing a good job, overall laziness and just not even caring to show up whenever they feel like not getting out of bed.
All the while immigrants are always there, working hard under the burning sun or heavy rain and snow, always doing their best to get the job well done regardless of their wages. And Kiwis wonder why Kiwis don’t get hired... And I wonder what will happen with this new government making things harder and harder for immigrants to get work here... If New Zealand is left under the care of Kiwi workers alone how long would it take till businesses go belly up and the whole economy goes down the drain..?

The Greed Of This Town Really Blows Me Away. Like many of you know, greedy landlords are easy to come by, cramming 6 people in a room and charging an arm, a leg & your first born child. But what blows me away even more is the new trend of selling your grandmother’s 50 year old fan (complete with cobwebs and a missing foot) for a ridiculous price on Queenstowns local Facebook trading pages.
There are people taking advantage of people who really are desperately in need of fans to help cool off grumpy children or just don’t feel like suffering from heat exhaustion. Please people of Queenstown, we need to look after each other in this ridiculous heat waves and not take advantage of one another.

Jet Ski Ban There’s something extra annoying about ‘those people’ revving up their water-hogs and tearing up the Wakatipu for all to hear. It just doesn’t really groove with the relaxed lake vibe of other water crafts.
A real contributor to the issue is the type of vehicles that are considered ‘self contained’. You should not be aloud to have a bucket and call it a loo and become a certified self contained unit. It should be a built in unit. If it did not come with the vehicle from the factory, it should not be aloud.

On top of mucking up the mellow vibes on the lake, jet skis also significantly contribute to water pollution. I reckon the QLDC should start cracking down on the use of personal watercrafts.
